Additional Details on Waterpump change

This is part 3 of the  photo essay based on my water pump replacement. Yours may vary. I am assuming no responsibility that any of this information may apply to you, or if you skin your knuckles.

I have no idea how I got here - Back to Part 1

The following section is only necessary if you are using the "generic" water pump. If you are smart, pay a little more and buy one from a DeLorean supplier with the pulley already attached and you won't have to deal with any of this.

Here are the tools you need to press the pulley onto the new pump.  You can also go back to the hydraulic press guy that you used to take it apart, but I didn't trust him for the accuracy of assembly required. you only get one chance to press the pulley back on the right depth, too far and you're hosed.

Step one of the pressing process. Screw the screw into the pump shaft as far as it will go. Grease it up really well. Make sure you use a couple of greasy washers between the nut and the pulley. Now hold the screw from turning and turn the nut down, pulling the pulley onto the shaft. Go all the way until the nut bottoms on the shaft. Don't worry, you can't go too far at this point.

Here's where it starts getting fun. Remove the tool, back the nut off all the way, and put the shortest of your sockets being used as spacers over the top of the pulley. Screw it back down again. Take it apart and do it again with the next size socket. Every time you pull the pulley a little farther on.

Here's the final press. With the largest socket, pull the pulley on until the measurement you made before you started is reached. In my case it was exactly 2.5 inches from the back of the pump to the bottom of the pulley. This should apply to all installations, but as they say your mileage may vary. IF YOU GO TOO FAR, YOU WILL HAVE TO GET A NEW PULLEY since there is no way to get this one back of without bending it up. . Be VERY careful here.

Here's what it looks like when you are done. Note the extra-long shaft sticking out. NOW you may cut it off with a hacksaw, or leave it on for a conversation piece. It does not matter to the installation.

Here's what it looks like after the shaft is cut. Just like new! I painted the pump with Eastwoods Aluma-Blast paint, and the pulley with clear Nyalic. Available at www.eastwoodco.com
