I have a 83 DeLorean that I just evac. and recharged the A/C system I just got the
car so I don't know if it worked before, but now it blows cold for about 5 min.
then it starts cycling the clutch on and off and blows semi-cool for no reason.
Has anyone had this problem and know what could be causing it to short cycle even
though it's fully charged? Doug

Dear DMC GROUP,
I am a proud owner of an '81 DELOREAN! I did it guys! My Dad and I flew to Tacoma
WA and drove it all the way home! ORLAND PARK, IL!!! I already started the work.
I got my rotors cut and am doing an entire brake job. I know I will be writing
more and more now. Thanx for all the help! I feel like you guys are a part of my

Dear DMC GROUP,
I forgot to mention... My passenger side rear brake has a minor problem. Well when
I took off that plate that goes on before you put the rim on... a head of a
phillips screw fell off... Then I go to check what it was and it is the screw that
keeps that rear rotor on. On the driver side, the screw was intact and I removed
it without stripping it! I would like to know if anybody has screws like these!
Please tell me how to obtain these screws. I think I will use my dremel to dril
out that screw or even put a slot in it and remove it with a flat head. I don't
know yet... But I would like some new screws though! Thank you again for the help!

Subject: 90 Drive - BRAKES!

Dear DMC GROUP,
On my long trip, at the 663 mile mark I lost the Speedometer! It just stoped. The
Tach still worked and all the rest of the gauges worked fine also. I didn't have
any serious problems on the 2000+ mile trip home. (I AM CRAZY) At one point I
disconnected the radiator hose coming off of the water pump to the bottle. Then
DUCT TAPED IT TO DEATH! I thought this would be a great precautionary measure.
NOT A DRIP ALL THE WAY HOME! I did do the oil change, cuz the original owner,
didn't take care of the car AT ALL!! The oil was foaming and was sludgy, it didn't
even pass through the funnel filter! IT WAS SO BAD! Thanx to god he didn't drive
it much, cuz the new oil stayed pretty fresh all the way through, it didn't even
turn black. When I checked the dip stick it was still yellowish!!! That was good.
I changed the air filter!! I think all the stuff on the car was still original!
AFTER 61k miles on it! THESE PEOPLE DIDN'T TAKE CARE OF IT AT ALL!!!!!! It was
just rotting! Well the air filter had metal parts of the hose stuck in it! AND
IT WAS SO BLACK!!! Well I changed that.... So the drive was okay! I got it home.
It is now on jack stands. I am doing a complete brake job on it now. I got the
rotors cut. (THEY MADE THE SPECS! YA HOOOOO!) I ordered the pads, the only thing
is the driver side rear brake caliper's (hand brake) return spring is cracked.
You know, that little metal fork, well one of the two prongs has a small crack
which now doesn't return the pad back. Well that explains why there were no pads
in that caliper... AND THAT THERE WAS NO HAND BRAKE!! you guys know how important
the handbrake is on a 5speed!!! Well... My father and I made it!! hahahahe...
Here are my first few questions.
1) Speedometer.
I know it has to be the 90 drive on it. Should I order it from the DELOREAN 1 or
some other guys... Please help me... If you think it is something else, like a
broken line tell me!!!
2) BRAKES!
I know the fronts are a 77 capri... so I ordered all that stuff... The bearings
in the front rotors are actual BALL BEARINGS!!! Were these suppose to be sealed?
Cuz when I took the rotor out they just came apart. I re packed them and put them
back together... The seal looked good so I reused it. Please give me some cross
reference numbers, or year and make of an other car that I can use for this...
oh, the spacer that is the first to go on the spindle is a little cracked. Well
A piece of it is broken off so it doesn't make a good race for the bearing anymore...
What is a part number or even the name of this thing...? The rears, All look good
except that parking brake return spring fork thingy!!! I don't know what type of
JAGUAR these brakes are from... I have a good friend that works for PEP BOYS!! He
is taking good care of me right now... But even he needs to know some better
numbers, or even make and model and or year of the jaguar that those brakes came
from...

I live in Illinois, I have not heard of a chapter out here... I would like to head
up something though... Maybe technical advisor or somthing, I know I will be doing
tons of stuff on this car.... Basically building the car THE RIGHT WAY!!!!!

I have ordered bosch platinum plugs... I don't know about the wires, (rotor and cap)
and stuff like that.... What do you guys suggest... Do you have part numbers and
stuff for this??? I have a part refference guide but it doesn't help that much!
Actually a ton of the numbers are outdated. I think I will be making my own list
soon. Actually, with all that I am doing I am sure that new list will become very
valuable!

I want to order a few things from Delorean 1 or any other better place... (CHEAPER
IS THE KEY!) I need that aluminum bottle for the coolant! I need that 90 drive (IF
THAT IS THE PROBLEM) I need floor mats!!!! (I HAVE THE BLACK INTERIOR)! I need help
guys... I am sure I will be asking for more soon.... But I am becoming more
experienced with this car everyday... To bad I am at school now and I wont be able
to work on my baby till this weekend!
Sincerely,
Jameel

Someone was enquiring about who may have installed cruise controls on DeLoreans.

This was covered in some depth in earlier issues of the DML so they may want to
backtrack - nevertheless The DeLorean Midwest Connection had a get together
about 10 years ago and successfully installed cruise controls on about 1/2 a
dozen cars.

This might be that bane of my existence the "Start Inhibit Relay." When I had
the same symptoms with a brand new battery I jiggled the S.I. relay and my engine
started right up. I swapped the S.I. relay with an identical one in the relay
compartment (I think it was the headlight relay) and I haven't had a problem since.

I still do not understand what went wrong with my S.I. relay, but that's okay.
I don't understand why it is there in the first place!

Jameel,

Don't try the dremel, they have a tendency to chatter and might mess up the
threads in the plate. Get a reverse twist drill half the size of the screw. Soak
the broken screw with liquid wrench for 24 hrs. and then use a reversing drill
to drill the screw out. If the drill grabs it'll back the screw out, hopefully.
Otherwise use an "easy out" to remove it.

Congratulations!

The compressor clutch is supposed to cycle during normal A/C operation. I haven't
run my A/C in many months due to winter so I don't remember the duration of these
cycles off the top of my head. I think fifteen-twenty seconds is about right, and
my air blows ice cold.

Does yours cycle more frequently than that? Perhaps your compressor circuit is
fine, you just need a little more refrigerant.

Jameel asked:

Not sure what you mean by "all those others" Jameel. Kapac is a good source for
some parts, but they do not have angle drives nor speedo cables.

When I first got my car I ordered a little something from DeLorean One, DMC Houston,
Swedish Autoserve (no longer in the business) and most of the others. All of their
prices are about the same, so I just keep going back to the one who gave me the best
service on that initial order.

I have nothing against DeLorean One, but I bet you could get service from DMC Houston,
PJ Grady, DeLorean Motor Center, or someone else without a complete VIN.

DeLorean One (Ed Bernstein) has done this for as long as I can remember. Seems he
gets a lot calls from people wanting information and advice. The VIN thing is his
way of "qualifying" people. He also has VIN's of his customers on his computer.

Your fans should only "kick on" when the temp gauge is about one needle width
above that first mark on the gauge. They should stop running when it drops about
one needle width below that mark. What relays are in the car now? With 62K miles
on it, some upgrades/mods have probably already been done.

Subject: Passenger side door weekend

Hi all,
Last week I posted a message to the group about how my door locks have been acting
screwy. I disconnected the 'red wire' as shows in the tech manual so that the door
locks run manually. That was OK, and I started taking the door apart to start
working on the lock itself.
The project wound up being more trouble than it was worth simply because it was
taking more time than I thought it would. While I had the top panel off I figured
I'd get SOMETHING accomplished. More about the door locks below.

Both windows are off their tracks. With the driver's side top door panel off I
looked inside to see how bad it was. The left track was on OK, but the right track
was off. I really didn't get a good look at the slot itself so I spent some time
just trying to get the slot connected back to the track. After about an hour of
getting nowhere I took a closer look at the slot. The slot has a little 'hook' on
it that wraps around the track. With this hook, I have NO idea how the window got
off the track in the first place. It's impossible to just 'snap' the slot back on
the track.
It was obvious that the window had to come out to fix this problem. Unfortunately,
from all the prying and maneuvering I did from the last hour, the window came loose
from its harness. Grrrrr! This did make things easier, but it wasn't what I wanted
to happen. I removed the window being VERY careful not to let it slip into the door.
My wife gave a second set of hands just to be sure.
Now, the window slides up and down on a pulley located on the back side of the bar
it's attached to. There are two bolts holding the window harness to the pulley
itself. CAREFULLY remove those two bolts. I say carefully because I lost an 11mm
wratchet inside my door; I still have to fish it out. Once the bolts are removed,
take off the window harness. Now, SLOWLY inch up the harness along the track
manually. It's imperative you don't twist the harness or the plastic hook may
snap off.
Once the harness is free from the track, reseat it on both sides, and replace the
screws holding it to the pulley.
I used Zap-A-Gap at first to reseat the window in the harness. Dumb idea. I took
the glue off and used the black epoxy. The window seems OK now, and I have no idea
if I used the correct amount of black epoxy to reseat the window, but we'll see.

As for the door lock, here's what happens: The passenger side is OK. The driver's
side lock works just fine, but I have a habit of checking a door after I lock it.
It's this lifting of the door handle after the door's locked that's messing up the
lock so that it can't be UNlocked. The solution is even more bizarre. You have to
enter the car from the passenger side and lift the inside door handle or else you
can't unlock the door even from the inside. Right now, I have no idea why this is
happening. With the power disconnected, it's obviously a mechanical problem. There
seems to be a flex cable connecting the key lock and the mechanism so I'm going to
investigate that first. Anyone else have this problem?

Subject: 82 chronology UPDATE

These are the kind folks that responded to my call for an 82 chronology. Any other
82 owners out there? I expect there are a few that I have not heard from. It's
generally agreed that 1126 1982 model DeLoreans were produced, we have approximately
1 percent of them here below. As it stands
now....

10059 ??? 81 Name withheld (California)
10209 Dec 81 Ron and Margaret Jackson (Arizona) has a Craig radio (not ASI)
10213 Dec 81 Michael Gaines (New Jersey) 10251 Dec 81 Eddy Cue (California)
10410 Dec 81 Tom Ghesquiere (Texas)
10570 Dec 81 James Espey (Arizona)
10574 Dec 81 Dennis Adams (Wisconsin)
10688 Dec 81 Steve Brodsky (?)
10696 Dec 81 DeLorean Motor Company (Texas) 10788 Dec 81 Don Gowler (Illinois)
11529 Jan 82 Bryan Pearce (Illinois)
11554 Jan 82 Aaron Mills (Michigan)

Aside from the one guy with a Craig radio, all the cars appear to be the same.

Things I wonder about...

Are there any 82's built prior to December 81? Any other 82's have the Craig radio
or clock on console? Any rhyme or reason to interior colors or transmission options?
Are there any VINs less than 11000 built in Jan 82? Any other 82's beyond Jan 82?

Anyone got any answers to these questions?

I have seen a black DMC up close and personal when I was at DMC-Houston. I have
stated before in this forum that I am kind of a purist and don't think much of
painted Delorean's. However, Rob Grady does have a British Racing Green car that
he showed at the annual convention in Nashville. IF I were to paint my car I would
definitely go this route.

To make this car look even more unique he had mounted ther tires on some BBS silver
(chrome maybe) wheels that made a beautiful contrast with the green paint.

My opinion, show me the green. (I am not biased though......My everyday car is a
black Dodge Stealth and I love it)

Subject: Turning rotors...

Dear DMC GROUP,
I just got off the phone with this guy named LINCOLN NATION. He was very friendly
on the phone, but he jumped down my throat when I told him I got my rotors turned.
The fronts were warped. and the passenger side rear was torn up. They did make the
specs though, so they ARE NOT OVER CUT!!! He said... the rotors will flake and chip
apart now... The rotors were made of a strange alloy or something... I don't know?
What do you guys think? Well, whatever the case is... I had to get something done...
if not buy new rotors, which I want those new vented or crossed drilled rotors! I
called Kapac today... They seem to not have anything anymore... Lincoln, also told
me that they are full of $%@#$@ and that they have everything!!! Well... whatever...
He is in my area so someday I will have to go down and show him my car. Right now,
I need a new coolant bottle, a cap, (fix for my speedometer) 90 drive, I do have a
delorean part# for this part of dash board I need... it is: 108240 I ordered the
service parts manual. It was $45... I hope I didn't get ripped off. I got it from
Delorean 1 (I think from the texas one)

BRAKES:
I know the front brakes are from a 77 CAPRI. IS THIS CORRECT?
The rears are from a Jaguar... but from which exact model??? (I would like a year

I hope I never have to experience one. I did buy a fire extinguisher after reading
some letters though. I recommend one for every DMC, no matter what condition (I see
them in expensive Italian cars' trunks).

On the posting of fires starting in the fuse area, has anyone tried replacing the
stock fuse box with some type of gold-plated setup? (OR tried plating other contacts
for that matter?)

I have seen melted fuses (from the resistance heat), and as soon as I can afford
to would like to use fuses like Monster Cable or Phoenix Gold.
These
look high-tech, and I would THINK they might actually enhance resale value. Until
then, the current setup works okay because I clean my fuse contacts every five
months (it does make a difference).

of my vin are 2273... They won't help me at all if I don't give them the full
number... THE ENTIRE LONG STRING OF NUMBERS... I am at college now... and I don't
have access to the car. Since we refer to our cars with the last 4+ digits... is
the begining of the string the same for all of us? Please send me the vin if you
guys can... thanx...

VIN Number
here is the one from my car.

If your is an 81, the last for numbers are the only difference. and looking at
the digits it looks like it is. If you have problems with Ed Bernstein, call
Steven Wynne at DMC in Texas (Ed Bernstein's old business partner) his number
is 1-800-USA-DMC1

Good Luck!

Hello, comrades!

Has anyone experienced problems with their temperature guage? I thought I had poor
connections at the sensor, but wiggled them and nothing happens. Besides, the
cooling fans come on as usual. Sometimes the
needle will rise, but is nowhere near the actual temp.

I have to agree that this list is the best DMC club. We are constantly exchanging
valuable info, not glossy magazines. I would like to be able to meet others on the
list at barbeques and such. Perpaps those of us in or near L.A. could meet someday
 and show our cars off?

I have been contemplating painting my car some day, but I don't think I can bring
myself to do it. Is there anyone out there who would be interested in evenly swapping
painted car for stainless car? I want a black DMC! If interested, please e-mail me...

P.S. - What do the stock brake lines look like? Mine look rubber but have
a steel "spring" coiling around them...

Subject: Factory pix in latest DeLorean World

On the cover of the latest DeLorean World is a very cool picture of DeLoreans parked
outside the DMC factory in 1981. On the back bumper of each car appears to be a label
with the last four digits of the car's VIN.

I looked closely, and I could read the VINs of five or six cars. None of them were
mine, but they were very close.

Does anybody on the list see their own car in that picture? Don't bother to get out
a magnifying glass and squint unless yours is an early '81.

I can't make it to Belfast this year (my fiancee and I will be buying a house at that
time) but I would get a huge thrill out of a picture of my own car at the factory. If
anyone who does go discovers that more pictures like this exist please mention it on
the DML when you get back.

Subject: Brake Lines (Original)

Dear Tom,
My original brake lines are like that also... Rubber with a spring around it. This
hose connects from the frame to the caliper. I ordered new ones, just the other day.
:-) Take care.
Sincerely,
Jameel
