THE CRAIG RADIOS ALL DEVELPOED THAT PROBLEM. THE RIBBON
CONNECTOR BETWEEN THE TAPE DECK DOOR BEGINS TO CRACK
WHEN TAPES ARE PLUGGED INTO THE UNIT. THE
RIBBON WIRE BENDS EACH TIME THE TAPE DECK DOOR OPENS.
UNFORTUNATLY I DON'T THINK A REPAIR IS POSSIBLE. IF YOU HAVE
A CRAIG RADIO THAT DOES WORK, THE BEST WAY TO SAVE IT IS
EITHER DON'T PLAY TAPES OR REPLACE IT WITH ANOTHER RADIO
AND STORE IT.

Richard Strecker,

I bought my parts and service manuals from Specialty Automotive and it
came
with a complete, fold out wiring diagram. I thought all service manuals had
this diagram, but if yours is missing, I can photocopy mine and send it to you.
Let me know.

check to make sure that you don't have air in the cooling system by bleeding
it under pressure.

If you have a parts book, look at page 4/1/1. Part # 26 is the differential
adjusting screw. It's the large disk with teeth surrounding the output shaft
on either side of the tranny. There is a screw retainer, #27 that keeps this
screw from turning. After loosening the retainer you can tighten these
adjusting screws. It's not common but I've seen cases where they've needed
tightening. I know of one person that took the tranny completely apart to
discover all he had to do was tighten these adjusters. When he reassembled
the tranny he used the exploded picture in the repair manual. That picture
was lifted right out of the Renault manual and shows the ring gear on the
wrong side of the tranny. He was shocked to discover after the reassembly that
he had 5 speeds in reverse and one forward! He now is very much the expert
in disassembly and reassembly of the tranny.Out of respect I won't reveal his
identity except to say it wasn't me.

Back in V2 #222 of DMC News someone was looking for other mentions of
the DMC-12 in song lyrics. Seems that Ace Frehley of *KISS* fame had a song
in his 1987 album *Frehley's Comet*, the song titled *Rock Soldiers*.

The lyrics can be found all over the web, but here's a quick snip; "It was back
in the summer of '83
There's a reason I remember it well
I was slipping and sliding, drinkin' and drivin' Bringin' me closer to hell

"And the Devil sat in the passenger's side Of DeLorean's automobile
He said: Hey Frehley, Frehley let's not be silly There's a life out there to steal
......"

Just the kind of stuff to make the folks at MADD, well, mad, but the complete
lyrics can be found at
http://www.actlab.utexas.edu/~frehley/ace.html

A few issues back James Espey mentioned an old magazine article on
JZD/DMC.
Just by chance I was doing a bit of spring cleaning and found:

*Fortune* September 1973,
"The Automobile Industry Has Lost Its Masculinity", Rush Loving. Jr.
_Reflections on the abbreviated career of John DeLorean, a nonconforming
executive, at General Motors_

synopsis:
This article is pretty much a short read of *On A Clear Day You Can See
General Motors*. Of note is the closing paragraph;

"DeLorean doesn't yet really know what kind of company he'd want to run,
but it must be something with glamour and potential, something like what
he
imagined the auto industry would be when he entered it back in 1948..."

*Fortune* summer 1978, (no author noted) "Special Advertising Section -
New American Investment in Northern Ireland"

synopsis:
This was a part of a PR campaign to bring business investments to Northern
Ireland. The DeLorean Motor Company was one of several companies
featured.

JZD is quoted:
"... It was the government agencies here who helped us get started. They have
not tied us up with red tape - indeed, exactly the reverse. In just forty-five
days, the Department of Commerce and the Northern Ireland Development
Agency managed to accomplish more than what was accomplished in
other places in a year and a half...

"We have been putting together a team for several months now, and it is true
to say that each of us came here with a certain degree of trepidation,
partly because of the things we had read in the papers and seen on television.
But I must say that every one of us has been totally captivated
by the land, by the friendliness and openness of the people, and by the
forthright integrity in business dealings."

Also of little note:
Some long time readers may have noticed that our moderator, along with a
few frequent contributors have an affinity for the Mac OS. Some months back,
I read an editorial on Win vs. Mac in a non-automotive article. It went
something like this:

"Folks that run a Mac are the same type that drive a British sports car. It
may be a bit behind the times, but it sure is fun. Also there is a certain
pleasure in operating something that not everyone knows about...

Hmm, I'll leave that for you to figure out.

this model will be very detailed. Handmade in Germany, $25.00 deposit
required.

Good luck in your quest to get a Delorean.

Subject: MONTEREY BRITISH CAR MEET

Last weekend I exhibited my at the Monterey British Car Meet hosted by the
Monterey Peninisula Kiwanis.

This had to be the most fun I have had in a long time. In fact, I was awarded
First place in my class.

My class happened to be "Tenacity".

The reason for the award is as follows:

I left for the meet at 5:30 am Saturday, 4/5/97, morning. The drive from San
Francisco Bay Area took about 2.5 hours. After driving for 15 minutes, I
managed to spill an entire cup of coffee right in my lap. Thats the hotest
action those pants have seen in a while. I arrived in Monterey at 8:00 am.
My original intention was to drive down for the day, just to check out there
setup. It only took me 30 minutes to decide that I was staying for the entire
weekend so I could enter my car in the show Sunday. The Kiwanis were very
friendly and welcomed me with open arms. In fact, they told me that they
have
never had a Delorean entered in the show.

I called my wife, and told her to pack the car and my son and drive on down
for the weekend. We'll meet at 5:00 pm at the Hotel. When Mervyn's finally
openned at the DelMonte Shopping Center, thats where the meet was, I was
finally able to buy a new pair of slacks. Mine had this big ugly "Yellow"
stain in an embarrassing location. Funny, you would not think that coffee
stains on faded Levi's would look so much like my sons diaper.

The swap meet started about 10:00 am, I found a Mint Delorean Brochure and
a
mint magazine review about the DMC, unfortunately, these were the only
two
items related to my car that I could get my hands on.

I spent 5 wonderful hours talking with other car enthusiast about the DMC
and
of course there beautiful MG's, Triumps sp, Land Rovers, Austin Mini
Coopers,
Jags, Benteley's, Lotus, Sunbeam Tigers, Alpines. These people are into there
cars, most looked better than new.

At 3:00 pm, we all started off to take the 17 Mile drive through Pebble Beach.
What fantastic photo ops. I can hardly wait to get the photo's back. I took
me an hour to go 5 miles, I kept stopping to take pictures of my car.

The next 12 miles took 3 hours to complete. I had just reached the crest of
the hill, and there was the ocean, waves crashing, birds flying and the sun
was shinning. I looked back to where I was going, and, ack!!! The oil light
was on. I pushed the clutch in and I scanned the gauges quickly and noticed
the rev's looked low, zero to be exact. I coasted to the side of the road and
stopped. Of coarse, I was between to large pullouts, each 1/2 mile away.
I
got out, openned the hood expecting a melted engine and oil everywhere.
What
did I see you ask? Absolutly nothing. I looked under the car, clean as a
whistle. I must of run out of gas, looked at the fuel gauge, it read 1/2. I
thought, this new fuel level sender that I just got (An Original) must be
defective. I snaked a piece of heavy cord I had down into the fuel tank and
it came up wet.

Well, I figured no problem, last week I made a list of minimum essential
items
that I should bring on the first long journey #2981 has made since 1984. The
list was short, since I have driven lot's of short trips near home over the
last year and had changed all of the consumable or worn out parts. 1-DMC
SERVICE & PARTS MANUAL, 2-TOOLS, 3- V.O.M., 4-FLASHLIGHT, 5-
CAMERA, 6-CLOTHES,
7-CELL PHONE.

Guess what, no tools or V.O.M., I forgot them, all I had was my Swiss Army
Knife. After thinking a bit, I figured that I could at least pull all of the
relays and fuses. Did that to no avail. I sure am glad I bought that 1000A/HR
battery. I had all of the access covers off, and doors open on the
car. Lots of people drove by, honked and waved or shouted "Hey Marty, what
happened to the Flux Reactor". After about two hours of this, I packed things
up and dialed 911 on our expired cell phone. ( Did you know that 911 will
work on an unregistered cell phone) I got a busy signal or a message saying
that all operators were busy. After about six tries, I gave up. You would
figure that the Sherif or Security would drive by, I was in "Pebble Beach".

Finally, two gentlemen that I had spoke with that morning, one had a nice
Triumph Stag, stopped. They backed up and asked if I had a problem or was I
taking in the sights. I explained the saga which you have trudged through so
far. John, grabbed his VOM and came back thinking it was an electrical
problem. I showed him the engine and the access panels behind the seats.
He
looked at me like I was crazy, where do you start?

John, said, I'll be back with help. About 45 minutes later, John shows up
driving a 30 foot GAS Guzzlin' Motor home with a car trailer behind it. We
pushed the car up on to it, we stopped a car load of college kids to help.
John took me and my car to the Hotel, where my now totally dissillusion wife
and starvin to death 2.5 year old son were waiting, or should I say plotting.
John and his friend would not even let me buy them a drink, diner or replace
the 20 gallons of gas they burnt retriving me and my car. John said that he
justs hopes that somebody will stop and help him someday. My hat is off to
you John.

Well, we went down to Cannery Row for Dinner and turned in about 9:30
pm.11:00 pm, I jumped out of bed, and figured out what the problem was, its
got
to be out of gas, my string was wrong. I took my wifes car down the street
and found an all night gas station, bought a gas can and put 2 gallons in the
tank. Now the gauge read 3/4. I tried starting the car again. It would not
fire, almost, but not quite.

I went back to bed.

4:00 am, I'm up again, I have got to get this car running so I will not be the
laughing stock of the British Car Show, after all the DMC was really built in
Ireland.

I get the manual out again and started reading it for the 100 th time. I get
on the phone to find a car parts store that opens early Sunday to get a can of
ether and some tools. Did you know that Kragen's opens at 8:00 am. I got a
40 SAE/Metric socket set for $5.00 and a flat and phillips screwdriver for
$1.00 each. I went back and was able to get the car running, on ether.

Finally, progress, I openned the fuel tank and pulled the fuel pump. The
suction hose had collapsed and was the consistency of bubble gum. This was
strange, since I had replaced everything from the baffle to the acumulator
last year, from one of the Delorean Parts Suppliers that has been mentioned
on
this page, after recommissioning the car, it had been in storage for 12 years,
before I purchased it from my father.

Back to the parts house to buy a piece of 1/2" ID fuel line. All they had was
3/8". Off to Orchard Supply, they have everything except 1/2" fuel line.
I
finally settled on 1/2" Polyethelene, worth a try anyway, for a short period
of time. (BTW, I will remove it tonight, just in case this was a poor choice
of materials}

I installed it and the car still would not run.

10:00 am, the show is starting and I'm 3 miles away from my first attempt
with
a car show.

I called U-Haul the night before and reserved a car trailer and truck so I
could get the car back home. They didn't open till 11:00 am.

11:00 am, we are at the U-Haul store when they open. The girl there didn't
have a reservation for me, but I had a confirmation number and prepaid with
VISA. She checks with "Traffic" in Fremont, they do not know anything
about
it.

I told here to try again, because the National reservation center gave me
explicit instructions to go to her address to pick up my truck and trailer.
11:30 am, still no reservation, I asked to borrow her phone, I call Headquarters
to speak with customer satisfaction because by now I have just
about had enough. While I was on hold, they finally get my reservation
throught the computor. She tell me that yes she does have one car transport,
but...., it is reserved for someone else. May I borrow your phone again, she
says let me check with Fremont.

11:45 am, we are heading back to the Hotel. I get there, drive the car on the
trailer with the starter motor, the trailer did not have a winch like I had
reserved the night before.

12:00 noon, we arrive at the car show, the car is on the trailer, I'm cleanning
up my mess and wiping the car down with Windex, thats all I had. I
get the car looking half way descent, and I hear my name over the P.A.

The Kiwanis awarded me a Fifty Dollar Gift Certificate from Moss Motors,
LTD.
for Tenacity. The award certificate said, "Broke Down on 17 mile drive tour,
didn't give up-is here on a trailer".

Let me tell you, this is one great bunch on people that I spent the weekend
with, I will definetly try again after I sort out why this brand new hose only
lasted a year.

With all that happened this last weekend, it was still a great time. I hope
to see some of my fellow owners there next year.

the ice to build-up by not cycling on and off. As we foun dout the low

Subject: DMC production numbers

I have recently had the chance to do a little research on DMC production
numbers and since the topic as come up I thought I would share my results
thus far.

Although there has been speculation about skipping VIN numbers in this
forum, I have seen no documentation to indicate this is anything but
speculation. My suspicion at this point is that the numbers do not agree
because they are not correct. Because DeLorean World does not cite the source
of the information published in the article in question, I have been unable to
verify the numbers, but independent documentation (readily available)
indicates that they are not correct.

DMC Safety Campaign SC-06-7/82 (included in your service and technical
bulletins manual if you have it) indicates that according to DMC, the '81
production cars have VINs 560-7199 for a total of 6640 cars (this number is not
the same as in DeLorean World). Other documents (soon to be posted on the
FAQ) indicate cars previous to 560 were "pilot production" cars, and although
some of these may have been salvaged and subsequently sold, DMC did not
include them in their list of VINs to be serviced by DMC service centers.

The Safety Campaign also lists the '82 VIN range as 10001-11127 for a total of
1127 '82 cars manufactured (this number is also slightly different from that
posted in DeLorean World). Unfortunately, the memo has no info on '83
production cars as it was issued just as the '83 production was starting.

Based on the information I have seen thus far, I have no reason to believe the
VINs skip within each series. Note that there were several diffrerent series
produced for the '83 model year (I believe the numbers are "serial" within
each range). James' survey will likely shed some light on the '83 production
numbers. Since I have seen VIN number 15888 on this list and mine is 16344,
I believe there were at least 888+344 '83 cars manufactured (unless the
skipping VIN theory is substantiated) which already places it above that
reported in DeLorean World. Since the last car manufactured has VIN 20105
and according to SSI there were 100 cars manufactured for the Canadian
market (17000 series VINs), I think the number of '83 cars manufactured is
substantially higher than that reported.

Scott, the ID or rigidity (wall thickness) of this fuel line may or may not be
adequate, but the material is completely safe. The DeLorean fuel tank itself is
made of polyethylene, a material that is amazingly resistant to solvents.
Gasoline won't touch it.

How do you explain these cars, then?

11152 ??? ?? Trinity M. Barbuto (Massachusetts) 11529 Jan 82 Bryan Pearce
(Illinois)
11554 Jan 82 Aaron Mills (Michigan)
11594 Jan 82 David Olson (Wisconsin), black, 5-speed

I was in contact with someone on the list a VERY long time ago who lived in
Belfast and was related to a man who worked with the VIN's at the factory.
I'm hoping to learn something on this subject next month while at EuroFest.

Fuel containing alcohol is death upon rubber parts. Many older cars have had
fuel pump failures due to the diaphragms failing after being subjected to
alcohol containing fuel (10% or less alcohol). I had a '72 Toyota Landcruiser
pump fail, & the factory replacement likewise failed within 2 months.
Problem traced to alcohol. I can't swear that the D's rubber is susceptible, but
since the hose was replaced who knows its pedigree? My 2 cents worth!

>If you have a parts book, look at page 4/1/1. Part # 26 is the differential
adjusting screw. It's the large disk with teeth surrounding the output shaft on
either side of the tranny. There is a screw retainer, #27 that keeps this screw
from turning. After loosening the retainer you can tighten these adjusting
screws. It's not common but I've seen cases where they've needed tightening.
I know of one person that took the tranny completely apart to discover all he
had to do was tighten these adjusters. When he reassembled the tranny he
used the exploded picture in the repair manual. That picture was lifted right
out of the Renault manual and shows the ring gear on the wrong side of the
tranny. He was shocked to discover after the reassembly that he had 5 speeds
in reverse and one forward! He now is very much the expert in disassembly
and reassembly of the tranny.Out of respect I won't reveal his identity except
to say it wasn't me.

I already had it apart and tightening the screw didn't help at all. I talked to
Rob Grady today and he told me the play is normal. He said the play comes
from the spider gears, not the bearings. Has anyone heard of this? Does
anyone else with a 5-speed noticed this movement when they push the axle
flange up and down? I ordered new flanges(to replace the ones that were rusty
where the seal rides), and new axle seals. I hope this gets rid of the leak. It's
making a mess on my garage floor!! Doug Venner =
