I was wondering how many owners out there would be interested in
replacing the flex circuit in the Craig stereos and what the threshhold price
would be. There have been about 20 years of advancement in flex circuit
materials since this unit was designed, a new part would likely be a
permanent fix. If there is enough interest, I could look into having a new part
made.

It is possible to do this job with the right screwdriver! When I understand the

carefully reinstall the trim panel over the handle. I have do this job. For the

Subject: The great VIN mystery

James wrote:

>How do you explain these cars, then?

It's nice to see some hard cold facts like that from James' survey. A point I
was making in my previous message was that of the documentation I had
seen, I had seen none on the skipping VINs, and I unfortunately sent the
message before reading James message providing documentation on that very
point.

I will have to re-examine the safety campaign memo more closely and see if
there is a way to misconstrue it or if I misread it (this is included in the
service bulletins manual available with the workshop and parts catalog from
most DMC shops). Since the safety campaign is number SC-06-7/82 issued on
July 16, '82 there is not the possibility of the mystery '82 VINs having been
made after the memo was written. The other alternative is that the campaign
did not apply to the later '82 VINs, and the later VIN ranges were therefore
not included in the VIN range stated in the memo (in which case the memo
is not worded very clearly). The final alternative is that the author of the
memo didn't know what he was talking about -- I will for the moment
discount this final possibility since the memo came from DMC.

Upon re-reading the memo, it looks like the '82 VIN list indicated does not
represent the entire '82 production run but that some '82 cars were made that
did not require the safety recall. My apologies for having misinterpreted this
information. With James' new hard information it would seem that there are
even more DMC-12's manufactured than originally assumed by DeLorean
World (and myself). Is it a coincidence that the VIN number cutoff reported
in the recall memo (11127) seems to coincide very well with the new year in
James' list?

Other than looking for hints in various documents (such as VIN ranges in
the parts catalog and safety recall notices to dealers) and performing a survey
like James is undertaking, I am at a loss as to how one would get properly
documented DMC production numbers. Without the input of someone like
the folks at KAPAC, it seems the best we can do is establish an estimate that
none of the documents or survey results contradict. I do prefer numbers that
can be referenced back to a source (like Jame's numbers) over heresay,
however. Does anyone have some facts to share?

I had my master cylinder overhauled about three years ago by a local brake
rebuild shop for about $120. They matched the casting number to late '70s
Saab and had to order the kit. They also told me to use only Casterol Dot 4
brake fluid since the rebuild kit uses natural rubber seals.

Subject: FUEL LINE UPDATE

Last night I removed the Polyethylene fuel line. There was no damage noted.
Because of the thin cross section, you must be careful with the length of the
hose. Mind you that this is only a temporary fix, since I was unable to mount
the strainer in its original position. The strainer ended up perpindicular to
the tank bottom. This would reduce the usable volume of the fuel tank.

The fuel pump would not run after I replaced the hose. It turns out that I
damaged the inertia switch while checking it last Saturday. I cycled the
plunger several times. Remember, I did not have any tools, so I was only able
to check fuses, relays, spark, ect..

As far as the replacement fuel pump suction line, I purchased a new one two
years ago from one of the Delorean Parts houses that is known to everyone. I
hesitate to mention the name until I have my facts straight. (No Flaming!!)
With the hose I also purchased a new fuel pump, filter, accumulator, baffles,
pump boot. #2981 has been in my family since it was purchased new in
October
1981. It had been in storage from approx. 1984 until 1995, when I purchased
it from my Father. In April, 1996 I registered the car and started driving it
again. The cars fuel system had been ruined by the effects of the 11 year old
gasoline that sat in it.

The hose that I removed last weekend had only sen one year of service. It was
severly cracked, collapsed, and had the consistency of bubble gum. You could
easily pull a piece off and roll it up into a little ball. What I find curious, is
that the fuel pump return line was in excellent condition, no signs of
deterioration. It seem to me that both hoses should be made from the
same material. When I was at Orchard Supply Sunday morning, I saw some
hose
with the same dimensions as the supply hose that failed. It was for a washing
machine. I did not think that would be a good choice.

When I find the reciept for the parts that were installed last year, I'll let
you know where they came from, just incase any of you purchased the same
thing.

Maybe this will help someone avoid a similar problem.

See you in Ireland.

Hi all,
Last week I mention a fuel smell from my system. I checked the fuel pump
area: no problem. Underside with accumulator: no problem. My last resort
was the compartment under the fuel line cap. There are two hoses coming off
the main feed. Sure enough, one line was detached from a little container it's
supposed to be connected to. I havent' checked the parts manual yet, but this
tiny container is about an inch high and has a little stem coming out the side.
The container is attached to the firewall. I reattached the hose, and tightened
up some others, and I haven't smelled any gas since. It's only been two days,
but after driving it 10 miles or so I usually smell something. Hopefully this is
all I need to do to fix it.

Rear calipers/ pads are Jaguar XJ6. Can't speak for the brake = rotors, but I'd

mine is 16344, I believe there were at least 888+344 '83 cars manufactured
(unless the skipping VIN theory is substantiated) which already places it
above that reported in DeLorean World. Since the last car manufactured has
VIN 20105 and according to SSI there were 100 cars manufactured for the

My understanding is that Consolidated began their numbering with 16000
and designated it an '83 model ... the 16000's were assembled after the regular
production run ended ... the full page advertisement, in 1984, stated that the
last 500 D's were going on sale after being released by a Federal Court ... I think
that 16000 and up may have a lurid history. Regards,

I just attended the Toronto classic car auction held every year at about this

memory serves me correctly) with 140000 kms. It had sagging headliners,
passenger window off track, and a ding in the middle of the hood. It was
equipped with a single after market custom turbo, lowered front suspension
(stock rear height made the stance look like a late '60's
Mopar street rod), and a cellular phone. Interior was in good shape (apart
from the headliners), and the frame was rust free. It fetched a mere $14000
CDN. I'm sure a private sale might have resulted in a higher price... oh well,
the owner seemed pleased enough.
I was able to purchase a DMC promotional pamphlet in the tri-fold leatherette
case in perfect condition. I've never seen this before, but it looked pretty
special, and I knew I had to have it. Are there a lot of these around? The same
guy also had various other Delorean literature including the large promo
booklet (both Irish and USA printings), two different styles of small three fold
pamphlets, a dealer listing, and a couple of magazine articles. I was pretty
impressed, since DMC stuff is usually as rare as hen's teeth at these type of
events.
There were two other Deloreans auctioned off yesterday, both '81's, and both
of which I was not able to see. Any information on the going prices Dennis?
Well, that's all for now.
Take care all.

Can you post the actual readings and at what rpm level they are at. When
there is just a high Hydrocarbon reading, it usally indicates a engine misfire.
A bad spark plug, bad spark plugs wires, lean fuel mixture, and other problem

http://www.ohio.net/~pie1/posters/index.html

Once you're at the website, click on "Classic Cars" to see the DeLorean poster. I
bought a copy of it a few weeks ago; on first glance it appears to be a right-
hand drive model, although careful inspection reveals that the windshield
wipers are pointing in the wrong direction, meaning that the negative was
just reversed. Still, it's a pretty good shot of the car, and surprisingly
inexpensive!
