I appreciate all the input, both in cars for sale and where to find them and what to look for. I found one in Everett Wa and picked it up April 8th and drove it home (350 miles). It is just what I was looking for and I am very happy with it. It is stainless, Automatic, gray leather and had 3443 miles on it when I got it! From research and people who know the previous owner (who bought it new the day JZD was hit with the drug bust!!) and the condition of the car I am sure the mileage is correct. The Seattle Times thought it would make a good story so took a picture of the owners wife (a pretty blonde gal) in the car and it hit the Associated Press...so that picture is reputed to have been publicized as much or more than the one with JZD in handcuffs. I have a copy of some of the newspaper clippings as well as the original window price sticker and many other of his memorabilia! The car is all original and VIN 5962. It was always garaged. It was licensed each year and driven quite often and he was aware of trying to keep the miles low so no REAL long distances. I purchased an Audiovox Model CCS-100 cruise control and am just reading the instructions. If anyone has any advice on this particular model, please tell about it. Sears no longer carries them and this one seems to be the ONLY one I could find and was in ALL of the auto parts places I checked into. One other question. My OTHER hobby is ham radio and I am looking for another DeLorian owner with that hobby and any suggestions as to neat installations of ham gear including antennas, in the car. I have not done any major engine work on my D yet, but I have done some other rebuilds. What you are describing can be caused by a the cam not being aligned properly when the timing chain was installed. Assuming that the Distributor is driven off of the camshaft (like most cars, again never gone in to that much detail on the D) you would be able to set the timing correctly according to a timing light if the camshaft was a few teeth off (as long as the engine will run). In reality, because the crank and cam are a few degrees off, your timing is incorrect. When you set the timing with a light, you turn the distributor so that the timing marks line up on the crankshaft. Well, if the valve is opening before it is supposed to, then you will get a backfire. You only get the backfire under hard execration because the timing is adjusted under those conditions. I suspect you also have no power when this happens. If the timing is "correct", and you get a backfire, that means you are getting spark when the valve is open. We know that the valve's are not stuck open because it does not happen all the time, so the only other thing I can think of is that the timing chain was not installed properly. Let us know how you make out! I think Mark Levy has a good point about the ignition timing not being correct. I had the timing belt changed on my car (Not a D) and the mechanic mistakedly aligned the distributor drive pulley (also driven from the timing belt but *NOT* off the camshaft) incorrectly and the car was doing exactly what has been described. It would run pretty smoothly while idling, and then sputter as soon as I tried to give it even the slightest amount of gas. When I confronted the mechanic with this problem he said that he checked and rechecked the alignment of the camshaft and found it to be correct (it was). Only the third time I managed to get him to check the ignition timing as well, at which point realized his mistake ! In reality, because the crank and cam are a few degrees off, your timing is >incorrect. Arnie said he had one cam replaced. The DeLorean has two cams. If the valve timing is off a tooth on one cam, changing ignition timing won't help. He said he had confidence in his mechanic and I always feel that starting with the simple things first is the best approach. Many items had to be removed to facilitate removing the cam. There is a very good chance that an intake leak (ie. vacuum leak) could be the source of his problem and is relatively easy to substantiate. If there is spark and you suspect a lack of fuel use propane to verify this. I use a small bottle with a standard flame tip on it. Remove the tip and drill the end of it to it is unobstructed to the propane. Then use an appropriate size fuel line that fits tightely over the tip. You can now use the propane at the intake of the engine to verify if the problem is fuel related. Start off with the valve only open very slightly while someone else cranks over the engine. Open the valve progressively farther each time. Remember to allow the starter so time to cool down between starting attempts. If there is a fuel delivery problem where the engine is not getting enough fuel, the engine will then start and run on propane for a brief moment. This is also a excellent way to find vacuum leaks for the engine. By inducing propane(an alternative fuel) to a vacuum leak( such as a leaking vacuum hose or intake manifold gasket) the engine rpm will rise slightly. WARNING: PROPANE IS A FUEL AND THEREFORE IS COMBUSTIBLE. KEEP AWAY FROM SPARK , HEAT, AND ANY OTHER POTENTIAL AREA THAT MIGHT CAUSE A FIRE. For professional use, go to your local NAPA AUTO PARTS store and order up a propane enrichment kit. This kit comes with a safety push button valve and dial valve. The approximate cost is $85.00. AGAIN. WARNING!!!! PROPANE IS A FUEL AND SHOULD BE TREATED WITH CARE AND TAKING ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS. ALWAYS HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER NEARBY. In these cases, the cars were titled based on the year the dealer sold them and not when they were manufactured. Computer >Has anyone ever Changed the Auto Trans. Computer or the Exhaust manifold gasket on the drivers side. >I didn't get a chance to check it out yet. Is it a pain? Thanks, Josh First, the automatic transmission computer is available from any of the DMC service centers or from a Jeep/Eagle dealership parts department as part number T1585496. The computer/governor is mounted on the right side of the transmission. It's cable is attached to the test connector located in the engine compartment, under the engine compartment light switch on the firewall. The cable from the rectangular section of the connector attaches to the neutral safety switch, mounted below the governor. The cable from the round section of the test connector goes to the solenoids inside the transmission. Remove the two connectors attached to the rectangular part of the test connector. Pull the test connector toward the rear of the car to remove it from the mounting bracket and push it down between other components until it falls free. Note how you accomplished this to facilitate routing the new one back up. Get under the car -- do use jack stands -- and unclip the cables until the cables and connector are free on the floor under the governor. Note that the round part of the connector has five pins. The three center pins are hexagonal and can be unscrewed. Draw the connector and list the wire colors as you remove the three pins. Unclip the cable clamp and pull the cable out of the connector. Do the same with the new connector and install the original cable into the new connector. This saves draining the oil, removing the pan, switching the cable inside the transmission, replacing the pan gasket and reassembling. Route the connector up to the engine compartment and use tie-wraps to secure the cables, frequently enough so that they do not vibrate. Reinstall the connector onto the bracket and reconnect the mating connectors. The governor is is held in place with two socket head screws and can now be replaced. After the old one is removed, pull off the plastic shaft and attach it to the new governor before installing. Place an oil drain pan under the neutral safety switch. The switch's alignment bracket can be removed with it's two socket head screws. Do not remove the switch yet. Slip the new switch in as soon as you remove the old one and hardly any oil will be lost. Replace the bracket with the tang on the switch body inside the alignment forks on the bracket. (If the starter does not engage after this replacement, the switch is slightly twisted or one of the mating connectors at the rectangular part of the test connector is not making good contact.) Tie wrap the cables together at this end and insure that they do not touch anything hot. Note: It is a good idea to replace the oil once a year so if you have not replaced it recently, you might as well do it now. Only about two quarts of the 1.6 gallons are replaced each time that you drain the pan. If the oil smells burned or is not pink, seek professional help. I think that I have remembered it all but feel free to contact me if you require additional assistance.
