Late production 81 Delorean for sale 26000 miles, gray interior, 5 sp This car
slid under a semi trailer in Seattle Wash, and I purchased the car
hoping to fix it. All the damage is to the front end. The front suspention has
been redone and it has new shocks, upper and lower ball joints and the
suspention parts have been powered coated black. I have a front fiberglass
subframe that will go with the car also. The car runs and is drivable short
distance. I also have a Delorean frame that I want to sell. I need to sell both
due to my son's medical needs. Make offer on both.

You have probably read by now what I know about transmission slipping in
DML. My transmission failed with a week of starting to slip but I have no way
to gauge whether the problem that I had is the same as what you are
encountering.

When both of my computers failed, the transmission would still respond
correctly to the shift lever commands. If you downshift, the transmission
should respond accordingly. If it does not, I suspect that the trans is
malfunctioning. It could be as simple as the solenoids in the valve assembly
not working correctly, but I am just guessing.

I just had a thought. Try disconnecting the two cables that plug into the trans
connector on the firewall. Do this after the car has been started since one of
the cables controls the lockout so that the engine will not start unless the
trans is in neutral or park. If the engine continues to run, you should be able
to drive and shift using the console lever. If all gears function properly, the
computer has malfunctioned. If it does not shift on command, the problem
may be the shift cable adjustment or the trans. I don't know if it will work but
it is worth a try.

Believe it or not, Stainless can rust given just the right conditions. If your car
had some moisture on the hood when you stored it, or encountered high
humidity, this may have been enough to cause some surface rust. Also, if the
cover material did not breath you were asking for trouble.

1997 18:41:32 -0500 (CDT) Subject: Interesting DeLorean Article

I've been a lurker for over a year, and just found an interesting article to write
about.

I attended the Pate Museum swap meet outside of Fort Worth this past
weekend (in the rain, cold, mud, etc.) and stopped by the Hemmings tent to
dry out for a while. They had several back issues of Special Interest Autos for
sale, and I flipped through the old issues that were available. I bought a copy
of the June 1995 issue that had a picture of a DeLorean on the cover. It said
"DeLorean: Stained by Scandle" next to the picture. Get it? Stained, as in
stainless steel!

When I got home, I read the article, and then found out it's already included
in the Gold Portfolio. Oh well. At least I only paid $4 for the magazine. Some
of you might be interested in buying the magazine anyway for the color
picture on the cover and the one inside (which is, of course, in black and
white in the Gold Portfolio).

One interesting part of the article is a the description of a test drive that the
author, who used to be in charge of public relations when the company was
in business, took while he was writing the article. He states that the car he
drove was an '82 with a VIN of 3570. At the time of the test drive, the car was
owned by Mike Sullivan, who was a service specialist for Toshiba and lived
in Parsippany, New Jersey. What is interesting is that the VIN of 3570 sounds
more like an '81 than an '82. I looked back at James' latest VIN listing and
didn't see either the VIN or name listed.

I've had my '81 for about 10 years, and drove it daily for the first 4 or 5 years. I
have no idea how many miles it has on it, because the speedo stopped
working after the first few months (sound familiar?), and I had already
memorized the tack readings for various speeds, so I never fixed it. My son
then drove it to college for a couple of years.
Unfortunately, it's been sitting in the garage since then. I plan to drain the
fuel tank, replace the fuel pump, related hoses. etc. shortly, but I'm kinda
concerned about the junk that may be in the injection system. After I get it
back together, it seems like I should run some injection cleaner through it the
first time I start it. Does anybody have any suggestions (brand of cleaner, ratio
of cleaner to gas, etc.)?

My '81 has grey interior and a 5-speed. It's still stainless, and looks good
(except that the leather and dash need to be replaced - I have sheepskins and a
dash cover on it for now). It has a Craig radio, and I would be very interested
in buying a new ribbon cable for the tape door if anyone on the list puts
together a bulk purchase of these.
It's VIN number is 4634 and was built in 10/81. By the way, it has the one-
piece hood, non-locking gas cap, and no emblem on the hood. It also has a
power radio antenna. It's been a while since I used him, but Pat Wiley used to
have a repair shop in Dallas called Motervation. He does excellent work, but
is somewhat pricey.

Are there any other owners in the Dallas/Fort Worth area? I live in a suburb
of Fort Worth, and would like to find a good, reliable, cheap? repair facility
here without having to drive to Dallas.

I have printed out most of the previous issues of the digest, and would be
interested in getting some kind of index, if anyone has an interest in putting
one together. This has been somewhat lenghthy, but I hope somewhat
interesting.

Thanks for all of your efforts, James. And thanks to all of you posters. Your
information has been invaluable.

Regarding the rust on stainless steel, couldn't help answering but stainless is
a steel alloy
and steel is still composed mainly of iron. Type 304 is also in the 18-8 family
which means
it has 18% chromium and 8% nickel as its main constituents. Under the
proper conditions, it
will rust...when exposed to some acidic atmospheres and...don't drop your
mayonnaise
sandwich on the body, that's a killer for 304 but not 316. The body needs to
breathe, so make
sure your cover is cotton, not the waterproof variety which will trap dew and
moisture
underneath. Any acid rain in your area? It may be a good idea to wash your
car after it
has been in the rain before you cover it. Also, please don't forget that stainless
steel...the austenitic 300 series..is not very strong, so
don't replace steel alloy bolts with the ss variety because you will greatly
compromise the
strength of the joint.

Hello everyone

Parts for sale

1. Set of rear Goodyear NCT tires. These were the original tires on the car
from the factory. I would NOT drive on these tires but the tread depth is good,
and the side walls are in good shape. They have 12,000 miles on them. Good
for Concours d' Elegance.

2. Right front fender. Straight and in excellent condition. It has the radio
antenna mast fitting.
I would like to trade for a fender without the hole.

Parts needed

1. glove box, Not the door, but the box itself. 2. power antenna for the rear.
3. door pull straps for early car (with buckel) Black. 4. DMC floor mats Black or
Gray

Michael,
The rear, power antenna is a standard Harada. Check with your auto-radio
shop for either the black mast or silver mast or, if you want they have a
combo am/fm/cb antenna with the required splitter included; Im using the
latter.

I am interested in going out and getting myself a delorean. However, one of
the pressing items holding me back is the issue concerning the headroom I

Hi all,
I don't know if this is off topic or not, so I'll keep it brief.

Basically, I'm after a "fixer-upper" DeLorean that I can import here to
Australia and convert for Right hand Drive. As long as it is straight, and has
no major (unrepairable) body damage, I'm interested. Obviously, I'm not
wanting to pay huge amounts of money! So if you know of any cars fitting
this description, I'd be very happy if you could let me know.

Thanks in advance...

>Jameel

Jameel,

The cooling system on a DeLorean is a vacuum system and is prone to
something a'kin to vapor lock and will cause overheating if the air is not bled
properly. Here is the procedure I use.

Run a piece of small diameter (ie vacuum) hose (about 3 feet) from the air
bleed screw located on the thermostat housing at the back of the engine into a
bucket full of water. Run water from a garden hose into the header bottle.
Start the engine. Open the bleed screw. Turn on the car's heater.

As the engine runs, you should get bubbles from the end of the vacuum hose.
Keep running the engine until the fans have cycled on and off twice. (This
ensures that the thermostat has opened and any air trapped in the heater core
has had a chance to circulate).

When you get no more bubbles, shut the engine off, but leave the bleed screw
open. Slowly pour one gallon of anti-freeze into the header bottle. This will
force a gallon of water out through the bleed screw and into the bucket, but it
is so far downstream in the cooling system, you will not loose any anti-freeze.

Note: The cooling system holds 2.9 gallons. The above mixture is about 35%
anti-freeze and 65% water and works fine here in Southern California, but if
you want to use the recommended 50/50 mixture, you should add about 1 1/2
gallons of anti-freeze instead.

CLOSE THE BLEED SCREW BEFORE TAKING THE END OF THE HOSE OUT
OF THE BUCKET! Then you can pull the hose off of the bleed screw and put
the cap back on the header bottle.

Hope this works as well for you as it has for me.

I'm 6'1" and my father is 6'3" and we both have more than enough room in
my DeLorean. For a sports car the DeLorean is quite generous with space for
the two occupants. But space for anything else is very limited!

The gullwing doors make it easy for a tall person to get in/out of a DeLorean.
They are better than jacknife doors, because when the DeLorean doors open
part of the roof goes up with them. I would say that the DeLorean may be the
best sports car ever made for tall people.

From: WINGD2@aol.com
Date: Mon, 28 Apr 1997 13:12:42 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Water Pump

The water pump for the Delorean is available from any Car Quest auto parts
store. There are two versions made. The original style with the press
on pulley is part number 9147 and the later model with the bolt on pulley is
part number 9146. Check the picture in the parts book when you order, I may
have the part numbers reversed. Anyway these water pumps sell for about
$110
ea with out pulleys. They are the same pumps as on the car, right down to the
casting number on the housing.
The pulley on the original pump must be pressed off and then pressed back
on the new pump. This is not hard to do if you use some care. Note: befor you
press the original pulley off you must measure the offset distance
from the pulley to the pump housing. When the pulley is installed on the
new
pump you must maintain this offset distance for the v-belts to align. The
water pump shaft does not have a shoulder or stop for the pulley to set
against so it can be pressed on too far. The shaft on the new pump is also
about 2inchs longer then the original pump. It just sticks thru the pulley
farther than the original after installation. You can either cut the excess
shaft off or just leave it long. It does not interfear with anything after
reinstallation. This is the reason you must measure the offset from the pulley
to the HOUSING and maintain this distance.
As far as the later style pump with the bolt on pulley, I don't have any
experience with this unit. I do know the "D" shops that sell these units have
a billet aluminum pulley made to go with their pumps. You buy it as a
complete assembly. I doubt if you could buy just the pulley. These pumps are
for later model Volvos but I don't know if a pulley from a later model would
have the correct offset or be the correct size. Maybe someone else on the list
can help with this.

Subject: Photos, please?

Hi all,
This weekend my wife and I just went for a drive down the shore. We
stopped for a bit in Atlantic Highlands and of course the car attracted a lot of
attention. This is the first time since I got the car in September that I've
actually done anything with it besides go to work. Anyway, I wasn't really
interested in talking to anyone, we just wanted to spend time together away
from the house. I had the driver's side door up to get some air after driving
for a few hours.
So this guy comes up with his kid (about 5 yrs. old) and asks if he could take a
picture of his kid in the driver's seat. You have to understand that my wife
and I were really just trying to relax. I wasn't expecting this. I VERY politely
told him that we really just wanted to not be disturbed. He was VERY upset
and surprised. I mean, is there some kind of social obligation that I don't
know of to this kid? I was telling my wife that if I saw a couple in a unique
car, I'd respect their privacy. With the summer coming I'm worried that this
kind of thing is going to happen a lot. A DeLorean Mid-Atlantic member was
telling me at the New Hope get-together that at shows, people would just
plop their kids in the car and take pictures without asking. I didn't buy the car
to succumb to the public's whims. Anyone else have problems/stories like
this?

Oh man, if I had a nickel for every time something like this happened to me,
I'd buy another car. Then I would set that one up for people to sit in and
photograph.

I regularly (once a month or more) show my DeLorean, and I'm fortunate
that at one particular show, most people know not to sit in,. touch, etc the
cars. But last month another list memeber from Phoenix and I took our cars
to another show, and we're there just AMAZED at how bold people are.

For a period of time, we sat about 50 feet from the cars, which were sitting in
the classic "doors up" position. I try to always latch the seatbelt as a kind of
subtle reminder not to sit in the cars, but people were still trying! I have an
alarm on my car, and everytime someone would try, I'd hit the "panic"
button on my remote - made some people move pretty quickly, others were
oblivious.

The car will attract attention, anytime, anywhere. One of the early magazine
reviews noted this and said the Delorean is not a car for the introverted. I
don't think we have any more obligations than owners of other "interesting"
cars, but at the same time, I do go out of my way to leave a positive
impression with people about the car.

imagined I would get that kind of attention! My Dad on the otherhand laughs

I would get that kind of attention... Well.. I can't say I haven't had any kids
being plopped in my car, that would piss me off royaly!, but I have had some
nice teenagers drive all the way home to get their camera just to take a few
pictures of them standing next to it! I kinda felt like, hey you know.... when I
wanted this car I would have loved to have some pictures of it.... At the time,
I was somewhere in idaho or something changing the battery infront of a
walmart... Not really infront... one of the last spaces farthest away from the
store... I hope I don't get that kind of attention... See I am also scared that if
you turn people away like that, they might out of revenge hurt the car... like
put some dents.. slash some tires.... you know... It is a very touchy subject.... It
all comes down to manners... I never ever touched a porsche or vette or
anything that I really loved that was just parked right next door.... I would
just stand at a distance and admire... That is completely rediculous that
somebody would have the gahl to just ask that of you! I wonder if anybody
else has some horror stories they would like to share... and any suggestions
on how to deal with certain situations!

Take care everybody,
Jameel

That would be Dave Bauerle (pronounced bow-er-lee). Radnor is just
northwest of Columbus. I don't have the number with me, but it's in
DeLorean World. Dave is a great guy. He has a large shop and there are
usually a number of DeLoreans there.

I have never had anyone do anything so rude as sit in my DeLorean
uninvited. However, the stainless seems to beg people to touch it. Well
mannered people at car shows who wouldn't dream of touching a '55 T-bird
will absently place their finger tips on the DeLorean body. Sometimes they
don't even realize it.

As James said, I would advise you to get used to people asking for pictures
and such. On weekends, especially at leisure-type events like a drive to the
shore, people will assume you have time to kill and march right up to you.
Sometime they use a kid as an excuse, but not always.

These people don't bother me very much. I enjoy showing off my DeLorean.
The ones that disturb me are the ones that follow me places, especially during
the week.

One morning last summer I had just pulled in at work into our gated,
guarded lot. As my door raised into the air a guy came huffing and puffing up
to my car. He said he had been following me for half an hour just to look at
my car. When he saw me pass through the security gate he abandoned his
own car in the middle of the road and hopped the gate to continue the chase.

This guy didn't even ask to sit in the driver's seat. He just wanted a close look
at a DeLorean. I hated to risk offending him in case he turned out to be a
wacko, but he had already made me late for work. I had to give him the
bum's rush.

Another time a guy followed me off of the Ohio Turnpike to take a picture of
my DeLorean. He was very polite and apologetic so I let him indulge himself.
