There are 2 primary reasons why people have painted there DeLoreans. First, some
people just didn't like the fact that the car was unpainted despite the novelty
and convenience of having an unpainted car. Second, I have heard of cars that
have been wrecked and required painting in order to hide the damage and
subsequent repair work. I suspect that the majority of the painted cars fall in
the first category, however. If you have ever seen a nicely painted DMC you will
agree that they are pretty sharp when they are properly painted, however, I
wouldn't personally consider buying a painted DMC since it has no real value and
much of the appeal (in my eyes) is gone. I suspect by the number of painted cars
for sale and the lower price they demand, that most other people feel the same
way.
Stripping the paint from a painted DeLorean can be tough. If the car was
_properly_ painted to start with, the steel panels were polished smooth to get
the grain out and acid etched in order to get the primer to stick to the steel.
Undoing this damage to the panels is likely harder than it is to get the paint
itself off. If the car was improperly painted, then the paint should already be
falling off.

Aaron;
Ed over at Delorean One told me that once someone brought in a
red car and wanted it stripped and restored to original condition. Thou-
sands of dollars later, after the paint was removed they found out that
the reason it was painted was that it had been in an accident and re-
paired with body filler. So not only did he have to pay to have the paint
removed, but also to have the panels repaired. Does anyone out there
know if the majority of painted deloreans have been painted for this reason?

Subject: Door Lock Set
I am looking for a replacement Door Lock Set for my '81 DeLorean.
What I really need is the plastic Retainer that holds the door lock in place.
Does any one know where I may find the replacement locks and the part number.
Would accept an '82 or '83 lock set if it is available.

What was the Part Number of the Sun Shade Struts you purchased from NAPA?
Do they carry the Door Struts also?

It's *probably* not indicative of ALL the painted De Lorean's out there,
but at last years Barrett-Jackson car auction out here in Scottsdale, there
was a red '81 and it was ROUGH! It had a reserve of $20K, and of course it
was a "no-sale". The paint was cracked in spots, and you could plainly see
that tell-tale pink bondo underneath.

The part number I got was 819-5518. These are the exact same size as the
ones that were on my car. The lift is 30 lbs each. This seems perfect.
When the shade is down, there is no lift, so that the shade has no chance
of springing up accidentally. At about 1/2 way up, the start to kick in,
and when the shade is fully raised, there is no chance of them coming down
on their own. They were $21.99 each.
I'm not sure if they have door struts. I just went there with a strut, and
the man behind the counter measured it, compared it to the book, and
ordered it. They had it that afternoon, and had no special ordering
charge. You might want to do the same with the door strut.
Along those lines, I think that it would be great if we put together a list
of replacement parts that people have used. Too many times I have had to
pay double the going price for a part because I have had to order it from
one of those mail order guys. Although the DOA is a great organization,
there is 0 chance of them putting together a list like this. They are
pretty much run by some of the suppliers, and a cross reference list would
not be in the best interest of those suppliers.
So, here's the start:

My personal feeling on painted DeLoreans is that body damage would be the
only reason to paint one. Since the stainless is non-magnetic it's really
hard to tell whether there is plastic body filler under the paint.
I posted the following on AOL;
Tired of your rear lights working when they feel like it? Go to Radio Shack
and buy one package Cat.# 64-3010, and one package Cat.# 64-3017 ( small
machine screws and nuts ). Remove your light boards and put one screw through
each of the hollow rivets holding the light sockets. Tighten these down with
a vengence. This improves electrical contact immensely. Fixed mine, try it.
Thanks to Knut Grimsrud! Additional: If your boards are dirty, clean them
first. RS also sells an oxide cleaner that seems to work.

As a demonstration of the versatility of the Adobe Acrobat portable
document format, I re-created the owners handbook from my '82 DeLorean and
converted it to the Acrobat format. With the appropriate Acrobat reader for
your computer type (available from Adobe's web site at
http://www.adobe.com), the Owners Handbook can be viewed on any Macintosh
or Windows machine. The owners handbook file will be available later today at the
DeLorean Mailing List page:
