When I purchased my Gullwing in '86, I was working for a bank in
Nashville. I was able to finance my $12,000 purchase 100% ... however,
it took a call from my boss (an executive vp) to the loan committee
chairman to get it through. As a policy, they did not finance
DeLorean's.
Take a look at the classified in Autoweek ... there are a few "exotics"
financing companies out there that would probably help you out. Most
commercial banks won't touch it. Maybe a community bank that you
already have a relationship with will talk to you.

George:
The automatic DeLoreans are known as a slow poke and will not give you an
above-average sports car feel!
As far as the DeLorean breaking loose in corners and spinning around,
that is NOT normal. The car was designed to handle very well. I would
check your tires as they are the most liekly problem. Either they are
worn, a cheap design or are not the original sizes of 195/60/14 in the
front and 205/60/15 in the back. My DMC-12 holds great and never feels
like it is going to break free in corners. Mine is also an early '81
5-speed that has been lowered.

With any bank or insurance company, it is important to be well-informed
yourself about the history and value of DeLoreans. I downloaded and
printed up copies of the first edition of the DMC FAQ from David
Takeuchi's web site. I also downloaded and printed the list of 'For Sale'
DeLorean ads from various web sites. Naturally, I weeded out the cheap
ones and only showed the higher-priced ones to the bank and AAA of
Missouri. These two pieces of info and my seemingly-thorough knowledge of
the car allowed me to both obtain the loan and get AAA to agree to insure
its first and only DMC-12 in the State of Missouri. I find my rates quite
reasonable and have no plans to switch insurance carriers ever.

I do not believe that my luggage rack adversely affects the cooling of the
engine compartment. First, it sits above the louvers by 3 or 4 inches.
Secondly, then loaded you get that Kammback airflow effect which, I
believe, should help pull hot air out of the compartment.
I'm going to WalMart today - james and mike have sold me. The DMC

Earlier today I called PJ Grady, DMC (Houston), DeLorean Motor Center,
and DeLorean One and asked how they are shipping things since most of
them usually ship via UPS.
PJ Grady is shipping via US Mail, and says they are experiencing no
delays.
DMC (Houston) is shipping via Airborne Express and the US Mail. Warren at
DMC says that people shouldn't hesitate to order, that they are having no
problems getting orders out.
DeLorean Motor Company in Garden Grove shipped exclusively with UPS and
if you have an account with another shippper (FedEx, Airborne, DHL) they
will ship it through them for you.
DeLorean One has accounts through a number if shipping companies and is
using various ones depending on the cost, size and urgency of the order.
Just an FYI...

For reference, I recently installed the Relay Upgrade kit in my D.
I took about 1/2 hour to do it.
The only immediate improvement was with the doorlocks, they worked
fine before, but now they work faster, no lag between the two doors.
The other improvement is piece of mind, I had no problems with any
electrics, but was worried about it happening. It may still happen,
but at least one of the causes is elimanated.

After installing a new set of tires, and having an alignment done, I
noticed the alignment spec report showed about a .2 out of wack on the
rear right toe-in.
Sure enough, on the drive-home I heard a distinct click from the rear
right after braking hard. After getting her in the garage, and quick
couple knocks on the tire confirmed a click in the rear.
I promptly pulled that wheel and trailing are shield, and sure enough
the bushing looks like it had dried some and thus the house-shoe washer
was a little loose, the bolt was still tight and appeared unbent etc.
So I snugged down the bolt and the click went away.
Did I do the right thing? Or should the bolt always be replaced?

They are almost a complete new carpet, with an excellent non-slip

cheaper and easier then redoing your carpet if it wears.

Just to through this in for people's reference, and back issue

I just replaced the original Goodyear NCT's (which were new in the
front, but almost slicks in the rear) with a set on Pirelli P600's.
With the softer sidewall of the Pirelli's, I have found that the car
has a slightly softer ride, (still sporty, but a bit easier on the
spine on rough roads) and is slightly less grippy then with the NCT's
but I think that once the tires are broken in the should be as sticky
and a few more psi should stiffen up the ride.
The noise level is about the same between the two. And the appearance
is about the same. (No raised letters ore the such.)

That person is the Rad Dad himself. I owned the car since new. Purchased
in Sept. 82 and took it in for it's 30 day warranty check the morning
after
JZD was arrested - end of warranty. Drove the car stock for 5 years.
Then
had it lowered and added the twin turbos. When I moved to the mountains
of
Colorado I began to pine for a 5 speed. I shipped my car to Rob to have
it
restored in Feburary. We got to talking about twin turbos and automatics
vs. 5 speeds and after much consideration, I traded in "81 DMC Colorado"
for "83 DMC Colorado".
It is hard parting with a car you have owned for 15 years. However, after
driving only a few miles in the 83 that Rob restored, I knew that I made
the right choice. At 7000' there is 20% less oxygen in every gulp of
breath - be that gulp one of human origin or in an internal combustion
engine. Thus, here the turbos are almost a must and at this altitude the
automatic sucks.
Yes, 81 DMC was a great car and was pretty to look at. But I now have a
new love and I hope that soon 81 DMC will have a new appreciative owner.

considering that route - with a turocharged engine, air intake and exhaust
outflow are the two most important items to tackle.
A fellow in Ohio - Dan Colley, I think - had air acoops made for his D.
One scoop supplied an intercooler and the other "forced" air into a large
filtercharger.
Space in the engine compartment might be a challenge and space here on the

Subject: Re: DML: Hum, Fuel Pump??
Over the years many people have come up with many reason for that damn
sound out of the fuel tank. A number of factors may contribute to it.
However, I suspect that the most common one is as follows:
The D has a fully pressurized fuel system. Unused fuel is routed back to
the fuel tank. As this fuel moves around, it warms up. Obviously as the
day warms up and as the fuel gets lower, it too gets warmer. Thus, the
birth of the baffle to deflect warm air that passes through the radiator
from helping to heat the fuel tank. That did some good but did not always
solve the problem.
Generally, the problem can be solve by raising the fuel pump. If the nut
on the top of the pump is a 1/4 to 1/2 inch below the top of the inner
boot, the attached hose will be laying right on the bottom. As the fuel
get lower and warmer, the action of the pump causes the hose to vibrate
against the tank ----hmmmmmmmmm.
Raise the fuel pump to where the nut on the top is level with the top on
the interior boot and almost always the hmmmmmm(or, grrrrrrowl) will go
away.

I hear a similar sound, but only when my tank is almost completely empty.
I think a little humming sound is normal for an empty tank and there is
nothing to worry about. I get no sound when my tank is full.
The first thing that comes to my mind is perhaps your fuel gauge is
inaccurate. This seems to be pretty common in DeLoreans with the
original sender unit. Maybe you only think you have a half a tank when
you hear the sound?
But if your tank really is half full when you hear the sound there may be
a minor problem in your tank. I can only guess what it might be. Maybe
the fuel inlet is out of position, or has a small leak which is exposed
at a
certain point as the tank drains. Maybe the pump is mounted incorrectly.
Maybe there is a mechanical problem with the pump.
I just thought of another possibility. Maybe your car and my car are both
completely normal, but your ears are just better than mine. My fiancee
would concur with this diagnosis!

If you are talking about the grill block between the headlights it's
held in place by 8 brass sort of bulb shaped things that press into
metal receivers. Just pull on the block and it should come off.
Brass won't rust but the receivers might.

Actually his name is Dave Colley. That custom red car has probably won
more People's Choice awards than any other DeLorean on Earth,
including first place P's C at the Nashville Concourse. You can see
pictures of the car and the scoops in many issues of DeLorean World,
including the one last Winter which contained the Nashville recap.
To my knowledge Dave is not on the DML, but if anyone wants to see his
car he will probably display it at a car show this Saturday in Brunswick,
Ohio. Hopefully several other DeLoreans will also be present.

I checked my bill of sale last night for my old '81 DMC -- VIN 1269.
Never realized it was so early in the production run.
It was sold in '89 to Premier Mazda in Nashville ... out of business for
a while. Today's whereabouts ... UNKNOWN!

Has anyone with the 'clunking' sound considerd looking at the two
stabilizer
bars that run under the engine, but best seen from looking down into the
engine
compartment. If memory serves me (my cars are at home) they run from the
center
of the engine end nearest the transmission outwards and back to the frame
where
they mount with rather large bolts. This is a common source of
'clunking' noise
because these bolts get loose - and they are tough to get to to tighten -
especially the one on the passenger side.

My car had the same problem. The previous owner was none other than Don
Steger.
Right before Don sold me his car, he started having the problem you've
described. He said he fixed it by replacing the rear shocks or
springs... I
forget which... I suggest you get in touch with Don at DMC in Garden
Grove
and ask him.
My name is Rich and I bought the car from him about 4 months ago.
Good luck.

Sean, look carefully and you will see two deep channels, one on each side.
The retaining screws are countersunk into them. They are not necessarily
rusty, they just loosen up. My grill went over the rook and under the cars
behind me ... a $350 lesson to keep checking it in the future.

Sometimes this is caused by a little air getting in the fuel line
due to low fuel level in the tank. This will cause the pump to
take in air and then it will resinate in the fuel accumulator
which is located approx below the ash tray on the center console.

Subject: DML: $$$ on my DMC-12
Hello all,
Just a few words to let you know my experience I have had
with my car. At first, I was on vacation for 2 weeks on
July. I had planned sometimes ago to go at P.J. Grady
for a good check-up on my car; I took an appointment on
March and I planned to get some repairs and replacements
on cosmetics and, maybe, on mechanics.
Let me tell you that it is really fantastic to look at
about 30 DMC-12 at the same time (1 burgundy and 1 red,
the last one with ground effects and a Lambo Countach
spoiler on the louver). Of course I also saw Rob's car
(the BRG... a beauty).
I thought about spending +-$1,000 on my car that time.
Rob first checked the trailing arm bolts: urgent to
replace them. He told me this was a dangerous situation
as he was not sure I could go back home (Quebec= 600 miles)
without getting in trouble on the highway.
Then he performed a tune-up (plugs, filters, rotor, wires,
etc.). He also replaced some pipes (fuel pump, water pump)
and also changed my coolant bottle for a SS unit. The brake
master cylinder was in bad shape. Both his mechanic (Pat) and
himself adjusted the torsion bars and the hinges. The update
for the throttle cable has also been done along with a lot of
other parts that were worn-out or missing beeing replaced or
installed (too long to enumerate...). Every time something
important (in terms of $$$) was to be done, he waited my call
to perform the repairs.
My car spent a little more than 2 days at his shop; much parts
were rusted and difficult to work on. My A/C has been repaired
and Freon charged. I now have to replace the mode switch to get
air in the different positions.
Finally, I got my car more safe to drive and more dependable
since it seems that it has never been correctly maintained before.
The previous owner knew nothing about the car but the style and
looking. I did not know that I would have to spend such an
amount on my car this year: about $4,000.00
Sincerely I don't have any regret as the car is in real nice shape
but I will have to spend a little more money (in the next months)
for some other repairs or replacements and also on cosmetics (seals,
luggage compt. carpet, passenger window, etc.). Anyway, if I ever
need to sell my car, the price of it will be accordingly adjusted
to the repairs and money I put on it. However he will get a real
good car after all.
BTW I also have had the famous hot start problem a few months ago.
My mechanic (in Quebec) replaced the fuel accumulator and also a
fuel pump valve and since then I am not nervous any way to be
ashamed when starting my car with a lot of people around.

I've heard something about this. Somebody mentioned a hum
from the rubber fuel inlet tube inside their tank shortly before it
collapsed.
The rubber gets old / thin, and starts to vibrate (hum) before it pinches
closed, at which point of course your car dies. Just a thought . . .

Is your car lowered? Perhaps somebody tinkered with the front
swaybar? Lack of a swaybar would cause oversteer.

My front trim piece ('82 model) is held on by friction clips that grip
small ball studs (not visible from the front) attached to the back
side. The trim piece is removed by simply prying it loose. The
screws you describe are used to hold the headlights on.

I also had a rear end clunk making turns. It did not clunk on the
second right turn or the second left turn, only the first hard turn in
either direction. One day I was riding in the passenger seat and
realized that the clunk may be coming from the front of the car. That
clunk was being caused by the jack, the lug wrench and tool kit sliding
from side to side and coming to an abrupt halt in the tool compartment
in the front of the luggage compartment. Some extra rags and some
rearranging has stopped my clunk.

I believe that the door radius is much more important in your own garage
than in a parking lot. You can easily get out of the car with 18 inches
of space and close the door wothout a problem. If you park that close
to another car in a lot, you will undoubtedly pick up more than your
share of parking lot rash, especially with so many pick-up trucks and
Land Rover clones with doors that hit above the plastic moulding or on
the back fender.

Those screws hold down the headlight bezels. The grill is a 'push on'
affair and can be coaxed off with a screwdriver.

If you go into a curve too hot, scare yourself and lift off the gas, it
may come
around on you especially if you have mismatched tires. Is there a
raceing type
school in your area where you use your car during the school? Highly
recommend that yoou take the time to do it. The 'D' is very different
from
anything you may have driven before. Good Luck, Joe

It seems obvious to me that the front grill attachment changed during the
short production of the D. My 81 (Nov 81) was attached with screws. My
83
(Aug 82) is attached with those snap on fasteners referred to earlier.
It appears to me that the latter is an improvement.
