On a general driving principle: This car is rear-wheel drive, therefore
letting off the gas will result in "engine braking" on the rear wheels.
Therefore while the front wheels are happilly scooting round a bend, the
back will have more of a propensity to slide. This is accentuated
by this car having a lovely
lump of metal behind the rear wheels to help push it round:-) Because of
this, holdng the
throttle open, neither accellerating nor decellerating will reduce the
chances of "spinning out".
Martin
PS Us here in the UK are taught to use "engine braking" when we learn to
drive (9/10 of Brits drive manuals).

An additional effect that I have not seen anybody mention (at least that =
I remember) is when letting off the gas, the weight of the car shifts to =
the front tires causing a better grip with the road resulting in a =
sharper turn. With the engine so far back I don't know if the result =
would be the same as a front engine car.
Slight pumping of the gas is one of those nifty tricks that I was taught =
to get better steering when the car is under-steering while powering =
around a corner. I've never tried it in my D since in central Illinois =
everything is a straight road.
Kind of on the same subject, has anybody ever raced their D in an auto =

A J-turn is a turn in which u are in reverse, and u quickly turn the
wheel,
causing the front-end of the car to slide around 180 degrees in which u
are
then facing forward. after u are facing forward, u go from reverse to a
forward gear, depending on if the car is a manual or an automatic, and u
then
continue to proceed in driving. The police have this nifty trick down
pretty
well. I've tried it once in my 1967 Ford Galaxie, and it caused my front
hub-caps to pop off, but it was a truly remarkable experience.

That sounds like most of your problems there. Tires always must be
matched on the same axle, and should be matched all the way around for
the best handling. Goodyear does not make a tire model anymore that fits
both the front and back. I don't believe Michelin does either. If you
want to drive the car hard, you would be best off replacing all four
tires with new ones, probably either Yokohamas, Pirelli, BF Goodrich,
Firestone Firehawks or Cooper tires.
Rear engine, rear-wheel drive cars will not handle the same as a front
engine, rear-wheel drive sports car does. All the weight is in the back
of the car and when it starts to let go in corners, it really lets go as
you have found out. DeLorean and Lotus designed the suspension and
odd-sized tires to greatly offset this problem. BUT there are limits to
everything!

Stainless steel angle-cut tailpipe extensions from J.C. Whitney for about
$27 a pair. They are a bit long and need to be trimmed by about 1.5-2
inches, but give the rear of the car a much more masculine, sporty and
polished look.
I have some and hope to get them trimmed and welded on to the tailpipes
next month.

First, you must understand that when I got my car. It drove fine, ran
good, and nothing really major was wrong. But, just to satisfy my
curiosity, I completely disasembled the car down to the frame.
Mostly to find any potental problems and to change a few things
around. As for the audio system. First I removed the battery
and relocated it in the passenger side rear pontoon section
of the car. also removed and relocated the Jetronic module,
ign. module , etc... . Fiberglassed both of the compartments
in completely and installed 8" Sub speakers in there.
I replaced the climate control panel with one from a
Ford Taurus SHO. Its a completely electronic/ Automatic
unit. Relocated the Headlamp and hazzard switches,
and etc.. etc... SO, to make this very long story short.
IF you want to do something cool with your car, all you
need is a good drill, saw, knife, and imagination. If it
doesn't fit, Make it fit !
NO, my car will be far from original, but Its MY car.

Gary asled about questions prior to buying:
Ask a question about D's to two different owners and your're liable to get
three different answers. I have owned an 81 and an 83. There are minor
differences, but none that I would pay hard dollars for. Admittedly, my
81
was a "late " 81. It was produced in the height of the production run
when
safety recalls had been pretty well identified, and the production
assembly
crew were quite well trained. The same may not be said for the early
81's.
There are those that say that the 83's were built from less than perfect
parts. I questions that. There may have been some body/interior parts
that were less than perfect ( so check closely) , but the mechanicals
should be fine. Interestly, 83's do seem to command a slightly higher
price, and - and this blew my mind - my insurance went down when I traded
the 81 for and 83.
If at all possible, I would have the car driven to Long Island and
inspected by Rob Grady. It will be well worth the time and money to have
his opinion.

This weeks helpful hint ! :-)
while my car was completely taken apart. Its was
easy to look at the engine very closely from all sides.
One thing that everyone should check is there
oil pressure switch and wire. When you start your
car, your OIL indicator should iluminate before start
and about 1-2 sec. after started, then go off. If it
doesn't, check your wire. due to the location, its
very close to the catalytic converter. The intense
heat had burned my wire completely in half and made
about a 12" section too brittle to even touch. A new piece
of high temp wire and it was working good again.
Its a good thing to have working since the oil pressure
guage isn't the most accurate thing ever made.

This office represents the DeLorean Owners Association (the

Representatives of the Association have viewed your Website and

certain negative, false, and misleading information regarding the
Association. Further, as the moderator of your own Website and mailing

The Association has spent a considerable amount of time, effort and funds

willfully attacking the Association. The Association will not permit this
false and defamatory information to exist.
It is hereby demanded that these insidious and misleading statements be

The Association will not tolerate any further attacks on your part. If
you do not comply and confirm that you have done so on or before August
18, 1997, you will leave the Association with no other alternative but to
file the appropriate legal action which will seek both injunctive relief
in the form of a restraining order, as well as both compensatory and
punitive damages. I trust this will not be necessary and that you will
confirm to me in writing by no later than August 18th that you will make
no further defamatory statements and will purge your files of all such

Subject: DML: The DOA, The Constitution, and James Espey
I don't often post anything to the list, but this issue requires
attention.
James Espey is a personal friend of mine and I feel the need to speak out
concerning
the letter sent him by counsel for the DOA.
It makes me so angry that I have trouble deciding where to begin.
Simply, this is a free speech issue. The DML and DMCNEWS sites are nothing
more than a forum for communicating between fellow members. Subject matter
is quite varied and the majority of it has nothing to do with the DOA. An
electronic magazine or newspaper of sorts. James is NOT responsible for
the opinions and remarks of its members, PERIOD. He is not endorsing
or encouraging the destruction of the DOA. The information contained
within
is merely expressions of opinion and displays of dissatisfaction with the
Delorean
Owners Association.
The only information that appears as factual is the manner and mechanism
of nominating and electing board members. Apparently this information
is not for public consumption. If the dissemination of components of the
bylaws is "defamatory", then they must be flawed and do NOT serve
their members.
I am a business owner and have been for over 7 years. I frequently
encounter
things similar in nature to James Espey's letter. I offer the following
responses to each element of the letter:
Claim of defamation: Complainant must PROVE that the intent to harm
exists and there is malice of forethought.(individuals expressing their
opinions doesn't count)
Threat of injunction: To stop any further discussion about the DOA.
NOT IN THIS COUNTRY. "Free Speech and Free Press"
RING ANY BELLS?? They can forget about this. No judge will
touch it. Anybody remember the reversal of the "Internet Indecency Act"?
They can't even legislate pornography much less opinion.
Purge of References to the DOA: I don't think so.. Is this a request
for a BOOK BURNING?
Compensatory Relief: "Compensation" for what?? Lost members due
to their understanding of the bylaws?
Punitive Relief: "Punishment" for what?? Free speech.. Are we still
in America or is this China??
In summary, I find it incredibly arrogant and presumptuous to send
a "toothless" letter like this. There are no specific references to
the alleged infractions and an arbitrary deadline is given to
comply.
I would answer with a firm but polite "P*SS OFF" letter.
I would also remind them that they must file this complaint in Arizona
and realize that they may be incurring a risk of loss themselves. Because
in Arizona, the LOSER PAYS!
In short, I don't think they like the competition. I wish that I could
get away with forcing my competitors out in this fashion. Just
send them a $25 letter and they disappear...how incredibly foolish..
If anyone from the DOA finds this letter "defamatory", then take
it up with me and not the DML. I assure you that my budget is
at least 20 times larger than yours. We'll make a constitutional
law case out of it..

Subject: DML: Door Side Clearance Story
Hi everyone,
I read the querys and comments about the side clearance when
opening the De Lorean door. Before I purchased mine (4 months ago)
I was very concerned about this because our garage has very little
clearance inside. We had to park the Corvair on the left side and scoot
across the bucket seats to get out in the center of the garage. OF course
the Lincoln was easy enough as it was parked on the right side...both
cars
needed to be "tight" against the walls. I was even MORE concerned
when anticipating getting the De Lorean and kept quiet to my wife as to
how in the world I would work it out. As you all know it is impossible
to
"scoot" across to the right side! I had anticipated having to BACK in
the
garage each time, which would mean I would need an automatic large fan
to evacuate the carbon monoxide each time.
I was in for a pleasant surprise...I found I could drive in on that left
side NORMALLY and still get out easily. I have a washer hanging on a
a string in front of me as I drive in. I have it set so that I can easily
open
the door and have an inch and a half of clearance for it. In doing so
this
leaves the car twelve and a half inches from the wall, measuring at the
black rub strip, which is the extreme edge of the car. Of course it DOES
also taper IN toward the center of the garage at that point, so I have
plenty of room to sort of "sidle" out of the garage alongside the car.
Great great. It also means that I COULD get even a little closer if I
wanted to..like 11 inches from the wall and the door would JUST
scrape it.
One other sort of unusual problem in my garage, is that the
ceiling is only 6 foot 1 inch high....the doors will not quite FULLY
open...that is
no problem in getting out however, but I decided to cut a square hole
in the ceiling to allow the Rear View mirrors to go all the way UP. I
finished that hole and even put in a "matching" pad (silver vinyl)!
Everything first class for the D. I would like to be around for the next
owner of this place. They will go crazy wondering what in the world
those upholsered holes were put there for!!
I found one thing to watch....at drive in banks I first tried getting
close to the deposit container, however when it opened, it came out so
that I was too close to open my door...I had to plan for that and stay out
slightly. I cannot reach the "tube" thru the toll booth window, so
always
open the door....Of course that also brings out a few pretty tellers to
look
and ask questions. My wife says they came to look at the car and not me
and that it is my "grandfatherly looks" that attracts them (I am 76).

How many Celica's are on the road? How many Celica's have gullwing doors
and
stainless steel skins? Some cars have charisma, a DeLorean is one of
them. A

What's cheap about having to remove the body, steering, and everything
else
from the car to replace the rusted out frame with a new one that costs
$8,000.00? Buyer beware, spend the money up-front or have very deep
pockets. Good luck, and take your time, your good 'D' is out there.

I was wondering if a DeLorean is fairly easy to restore other than finding
exact parts? I am talking about the motor. Are there any special
electronics on the motor or any other part like on the new cars of today?
Thanks

Hello Chase,
Sorry to disagree with you but Goodyear does make a set of tires
that
go on both front and rear. I am sure as I just purchased a set for my 81
DMC-12.
Here are the spec's:
Front: GOODYEAR EAGLE GTII P195/60R14
Rear: GOODYEAR EAGLE GTII P235/60R15
I have found that these tires perform quite well with at least the same
performance as the original tires, the steering is well with in that
expected from a rear engine car. I use the exact amount of inflation
recommended not to mention the correct wheel alignment.
My comment here is simple, there is no substitute for good tires of the
correct type and size. Good tires are the very best buy you can ever make.
Good luck

Chequered Flag in CA has had one listed for $7500 for quite a while. I'm
told it was once painted, then the paint was sanded off. Owner
describes it as a "scruffy car, but strong running", with about 60k miles
on it (last year when I called). It's been used for commercial events, so
it's got a small hole in the roof where somebody wanted to install a sign,
and some other quirky things like that. But it's still there . . .
The rusted frame would probably be easier to deal with. If you have a lot
of time and energy, take the whole thing apart and sandblast the frame,
and put it back together again!

J Steuben said:

Wow! Mine is 1280, probably assembled the same day as yours, and it
also has snaps. The snaps seem to be pretty flimsy, and I wish my car
had the screws.
The question of front grill attachment is fascinating. As I recall DMC
had
Quality Assurance Centers on both the East and West coasts. Perhaps
one of these centers replaced the snaps with screws while the other
did not. This would explain why VIN and build date seem to have no
bearing on the snap/screw difference.
Does anyone know of a DMC Service Bulletin regarding grill attachment?

Nothing too significant. If you wanted to you could retrofit an '81 with
the
same parts as an '83, including the luggage compartment lid. As far as I
know you can interchange parts between any two DeLoreans, no matter
what the year, although certain parts would take a little work.

Saturday the former DOA Chapter 23 officially became an independent
club. We resisted the temptation to join the growing ranks of
organizations with the initials DMC and simply named ourselves the "Ohio
DeLorean Club."
I am currently the Chairman of the club, and we have a full slate of
officers who are DOA members but do not subscribe to the DML. Fellow
DMLer Shannon Yokum was present at the meeting with his very
carefully constructed DeLorean model. Shannon has graciously
volunteered to assist us in developing a logo and laying out a Newsletter.
We are interested in forming newsletter exchanges with other local
DeLorean clubs throughout the world. BTW I brought copies of the
DeLorean Midwest Connection membership application to our meeting,
and ten of our members took them.
The next official event involving our cars will be a Covered Bridge Tour
of Ohio on October 11th. Other events our members will attend are:
"DOA Expo" August 28-31 in Snowmass, Colorado.
"LOG 17" (the National Lotus Convention) in Cuyohoga Falls, Ohio
September 12-14.
"Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival" Labor Day weekend in Auburn,
Indiana.
Anyone interested in these events can contact me for more information
(although the DOA website is a better place for information on the Expo).

There are millions of Celicas and Preludes (yeech) out on the road. There
are 6,000 DeLoreans out there.
A 20 year old Ferrarri is still a Ferrarri, and still commands a high
price. Ditto for the DMC-12.

I am fifteen and will hopefully have enough money to purchase a DeLorean
by the time I'm eighteen (that if everything goes right).Anyways my
question is:
Is it a good idea to purchase one when your young ?
Will it be to much financially?
Will insurance be to much? Parts and repair costs?
What is the experience of someone 18 buying a DeLorean?
Any Answers would be appreciated

Hi, It's good to find someone with a close vin #. My major focus right
now is the time delay of the interior lights. If I just crack a door,
the delay works. But if I actually get into the car, the lights go off
immediately. Do you experience the same thing? I've replaced the relay
and tightened all of the switches. Any ideas would be welcomed.

I was actually looking for one two weeks ago when I was replacing
my paper one. The size I measured was 11.25" x 5.25" and from two
places, they said that K&N doesn't make that size. The K&N filters
are awesome as we have one in the Talon Turbo AWD. In any case,
please do try looking on your end and post your results as I'd love
to get one that fits, even from another manufacturer, but of the
same contruction as the K&N...

Is the air filter on the DeLorean the same as the stock B28F engine?
I'ld like to get a K&N filter-charger, has anyone installed one?

My opinion is that for a classic car such as the DMC-12, with kind of
mileage you can expect from a car often originally purchased as a
collectible rather than practical car, and with fewer than 5500 left in
the States (the rest have found there way round the world to Europe and
suchlike) around $20k is a good price...

Subject: DML: Ohio Identity Crisis?
Shannon Yokum just pointed out to me that the agreed upon name of the
club is "DeLorean Club of Ohio" D.C.O., not O.D.C..
I guess D.C.O. beats the alternatives, like D.O.C. and C.O.D.. As
Shannon may point out, D.C.O. has a certain symmetry. In my opinion the
best organization name right now is the D.O.A.. Like James Espey's
license plate, DFUNCT, the name D.O.A. makes a not-so-subtle statement
about the car's history. It's also funny.
Last year the DML had a lengthy discussion about vanity plates, where
everyone threw out suggestions. This year I would like to open up the
floor to suggest names for a local DeLorean club. Anything goes, and
the name does not necessarily need the words "DeLorean" or "Ohio" in
it. Some ideas that come to mind:
Gullwings Over Ohio - the G.O.O. club
Dedicated Organization of DeLorean Owners - the D.O.D.O. club
Gullwing Ostentation Lives Forever - the G.O.L.F. club
Northern Ohio Regular Users of Stainless Transportation - the
N.O.R.U.S.T club.
Brotherhood Appreciating DeLoreans And Stainless Steel - the
B.A.D.A.S.S. club
This exercise might be more fun tonight, after a few beers. I'll bet
that's
how they first came up with the name D.O.A. . . .

I agree. Probably the only thing holding the price down is that the DMC
is not a car that sticks in many people's minds. The DeLorean name isn't
as prevalant as say Porsche or BMW. The misconception of the lack of
parts availibility also probably helps keep the price down.
I'd love to find a DMC for under $5k! =)
