The car is in Annapolis Maryland. It has gray leather, and an Automatic
trans. There was a young man named Jermey Delany that wanted a test drive
in the car. He was 15 years old, and couldn't drive.
Jermey if you read this, could you give your opinion on this DMC
and the preformance with the Auto?

In responce to your question if a Delorean can be a daily driver, the
answere
is yes,
I drove mine VIN 10430 every day in Cleveland wether for ten years
and my wife drove hers VIN 6823 4 days a week for 10 years but
like Peter Pan we had to grow up and now they live in a garage to only be
driven a few times a year.

Donald,

Many of us (myself included) do use their DeLoreans as their daily
drivers. They are as reliable an automobile as any other, and more fun
to drive. But, there are a few things that you should consider and most
of them revolve around money.

There are no new DeLoreans. The cars were manufactured in '81-83 and
have stored/used/abused for about 15 years. Very few of the lower priced
cars are in good condition, so no matter what price you pay for a
DeLorean, you will probably end up with $15,000 or so invested in the
car before it is in shape to drive daily.

There is no network of dealerships, supported by a factory. Service,
from an oil change to a complete restoration, and virtually all parts
for the car are available from the five major suppliers:
   Bauerly Automotive Inc Radnor, OH
DeLorean Motor Center Garden Grove, CA
   DeLorean Motor Company Houston, TX
   DeLorean One Chatsworth, CA
PJ Grady Inc West Sayville, NY
But the availibility of other shops is spotty. The DeLorean Owners
Association and the DML publish lists of other shops that have been
recommended by other owners, but there are many shops that will not work
on a DeLorean. (Usually, this is because they are not familiar with the
car and don't think that they can repair it quickly enough to make it
economically prudent).

Driving an exotic means maintaining an exotic. A *normal* car collects
dents, scratches, wear marks, and a few inoperable accessories over the
years. Their owners accept these as normal wear and tear because they
expect to trade the car soon. Most drivers of exotic cars are making a
statement about themselves and their lifestyle and are much more
concerned with maintenance, both mechanical and appearance. This can be
expensive.

Insurance at your age is also another area you need to check out before
you buy. Some companies will not insure the car, others limit coverage,
while others have no problem. But you need to see what the market is
like in your area.

My only concern in advising anyone whether they should buy and drive a
DeLorean is to make sure that you don't catch a tiger by the tail and
end up with a car that you can't afford. It will then be only a source
of complaint instead of a joy to dirve.

Several people responded to my question about original dealers/authorized
repair shops. However, no one had a list of authorized repair shops. If
everyone who knows of a former authorized repair shop would respond to me
via personal email with whatever information they have on former
authorized Delorean shops, I would compile a list and even make it
available in HTML or give it to James to put it on his DMCNews.com site.
I seem to remember that a couple of shops have been mentioned on the list
in the past, and I'll search the archives for those when I can.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have responded to
my many questions, and all those who will respond to my future ones.

Hello Don,

I wish I was 16 again, and if I were I would have no problem
buying
a DMC as basic transportation. I drive one now every day to and from work.
Yes I have had some problems, which is to be expected when trying to
restore
a car that you drive at the same time. You will find that the DMC, when
driven as intended, and maintained as it should be, will last you a
lifetime. If you like the DMC as much as I did my 32 packard, you could
get
the same use, 400K miles befor I sold it to a collector.

The DMC is remarkable in how well it is designed and how easy it
is
to maintain. Just what you spend and how good a buy it turns out to be
will
depend mostly on you. It will depend on how much time and effort you put
in
and how well ypu learn your driving skills.

You have a lot of time ahead of you and a unique oppertunity to
aquire a rear and beautiful automobile, right now the value is very low,
but
that wont last for ever, and by the time you reach my age a half century
from now, your DMC will be worth a fortune, and might even be your best
pal!

I completely agree. I am a law student at the University of Washington.
Upon reading the letter sent to James, I find little or no merit in
their threat. The real issue would be about free speech on the
internet. My conclusion, as well as my proff, feel that DOA would have
a hard time proving that James had an effect on their image or business
in general. I think the Judge would want to know why DOA was wasting
the time of the court and Mr. Espey.

(Thanks James...this gave me some extra credit in my class!)

My two cents!

It happened today. I was Rear ended while driving my D home from a
wonderful ride in a Biplane, the day had been going so well too...
Anyways, I was hit by a guy in a Lincoln Town Car and then hit the mini
van in front of me. There is alot of damage to the rear end, and quite a
bit to the front also.. I even had a third brake light on my car...I
guess
we can only reduce the chances of people hitting us - not completely
eliminate them... Anyways, my girlfriend and I only suffered whiplash and
we seem to be doing ok now...

Now comes my question - for those of you who have gone through this most
wonderfull experience what is the turnaround for this kind of damage to
be
repaired? I know every case is different but I would like to hear from
anyone who has gone through this...

I will be taking pictures of my car and possibly scanning and uploading
them somewhere if anyone is interested...

Subject: DML: Frame rust solutions?

I just checked out my frame throughly yesterday and noticed several
cracks in
the epoxy where rust is starting to form. What is the best way to treat
this?
Can I sand off the epoxy just in that area and paint it or does it need
epoxy reapplied? Where can I get epoxy? Can grease be used? It seems to
me
this epoxy was a pretty stupid idea. When it cracks, it cultivates rust,
and makes it difficult to find.
I've called a couple of body shops and neither want to deal with a
Delorean
frame, and I dread having to pay to ship the car to either coast from
Michigan
to have PJ Grady or Delorean One work on it.
Any ideas or suggestions?

I believe Kapac now DMC Houston (Steve Wynn) has some of the original
epoxy.
It is old so it will probably take days to set up but there are many
other
adnesive manufacturers that can help. If you live near Ohio Rudolf
Brothers
in Columbus Ohio can probably get you a good color match since its a
generic
color epoxy. Just make sure the repair done is rust free. trapping rust
under the new epoxy will just promote it. also P J Grady has some of this
material I think he may also have some newer epoxies.

Good luck

Yes I am one and the same although I don't profess to be a world expert -
that was Classic & Sports Car's opinion not mine. However I thought you
might like to read about your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and how
it came about.

The Vehicle Identification Number is a 17 character alpha/numeric number
with
10 fixed characters and 7 variable characters:-

 SCEDT26T (X) AD 000000
Constant Check Constant Ascending Digit Sequence

    SCE = World Manufacturer Code
          D = Car Line
          T = Series
          2  =  Body Type
          6  =  Engine
          T =  Restraint  System
          X  =  Check Digit
          A  =  Model Year
          D  =  Plant of Manufacture
 000000 =  Serial Number

The year of manufacture is determined from the following table;
1980 A
1981 B
1982 C
1983 D
If production had continued then 1984 was coded E and so on. There were
codes in place right up to the year 2012!!!

For those mathematicians out there you can calculate the Check Digit by
the
following;
a) Assign to each number in the VIN its actual mathematical value and to
each
letter the value specified in Table 1.
b) Multiply the assigned value for each character in the VIN by the weight
factor specified in Table 2. Multiply the check digit by 0.
c) Add the resulting products and divide the total by 11.
d) The remainder is the check digit. If the remainder is 10 the Check
Digit
is X.

Don't ask me how or why but it works!! (See my calculation below
tables)

TABLE 1 Mathematical Value of Letters in the VIN
A = 1   B = 2  C = 3  D = 4  E = 5  F = 6  G = 7  H = 8  J = 1  K = 2  L

Jim, do you still live in Cleveland? If so please drop me a line.

Donald, I currently use my DeLorean as a daily driver in Cleveland,
although I garage it during the winter. I expect my DeLorean to last me
another 30 years. The DeLorean has got to be the most exotic car that
anyone could practically use as a daily driver.

Hank Breer gave you some good advice. Anyone, especially a young
man, should consider the financial and insurance implications of using a
DeLorean on a daily basis. I would also add that the DeLorean has very
little cargo space, a commodity treasured by college students.

Ignore the final scene in "Back to the Future," it is IMPOSSIBLE to drive
three (or more) people any distance in a DeLorean! If you want to
participate in any group activities with your friends you will always be
following the group around.

Yes, buying a DeLorean at a young age could be the thrill of a lifetime.
Just be careful and make absolutely sure that you know what sort of
experience lies ahead for you. Also remember that any car can be a bad
deal if you get ripped off by the seller. I would hate to see you back on
the DML next year complaining about your DeLorean!

My frame was not in bad condition at all. But, it did
show some signs of cracking. I had the frame
sand blasted and then I took it to a business
the does the "spray in" truck bed linings.
The product is called "Rino Linings"
They can spray it in just about all basic
colors except white. Its cured completely
in 8 hours and can withstand extreme
temperatures and is almost impossible

Just thought I would share that with everyone.

Donald and all,
I use my D every day. Have been for almost a year now. It's a 15
year-old car so expect 15 year-old car problems. Just keep up the

My favorite piece of DeLorean memorabilia is the giant dealer's poster
that says "Presenting America's Most Talked About Car." It features a
collage of newspaper and magazine articles about John Z. DeLorean
and his car, several of which have pictures of the DeLorean "prototype."
The poster is HUGE, and the pictures come out looking good.

I got mine from Kapac, so I expect DMC Houston has them now.

There has been recent talk of the positive handling characteristics of the
Delorean...am I driving a different car than everybody else? Although the
car can be driven in a certain way to give it better handling
characteristics
and although I wouldn't characterize as a poor handling car, there is
never a
moment that I am unaware of the 65-35 weight bias. I have read in several
articles and have heard many people on the list talk about the attention
DMC
and Lotus put into curing the understeer problem, but what I have not been
able to figure out is why doesn't the Delorean have an anti-sway bar in
the
rear. Whenever I corner hard, I can feel the body swaying, the tail
lifting
up, pleading to swing around to the front (a situation that has happened
to
me in extreme cornering situations. Since the Delorean has a V engine
with a
high center of gravity located behind the rear wheels, an anti-sway bar
would
be such a simple yet effective device that would probably greatly improve
the
Delorean handling charactics. Any engineers out there that can explain
the
reasons why the Delorean is lacking one?

Subject: DML: Frame rust solutions?

I just checked out my frame throughly yesterday and noticed several
cracks in
the epoxy where rust is starting to form. What is the best way to treat
this?
Can I sand off the epoxy just in that area and paint it or does it need
epoxy reapplied? Where can I get epoxy? Can grease be used? It seems to me
this epoxy was a pretty stupid idea.

Subject: DML: John DeLorean Lawsuit Ruling

Just as an FYI to keep others abreast of recent John DeLorean news:

.c The Associated Press AP-NY-08-15-97

CINCINNATI (AP) - Former automaker John DeLorean must sell his personal
assets - including what's left of his 434-acre estate - to pay millions of
dollars in legal debts to one of his former lawyers, an appeals court
ruled
Thursday.

Judge Gilbert Merritt of the 6th U.S. District Court of Appeals wrote that
attorney Mayer Morganroth of Southfield, Mich., presented ample evidence
to
prove that DeLorean owes, with interest, $7.2 million.

``It was a well-reasoned and thorough opinion,'' Morganroth said Thursday.
``It was as we expected.''

DeLorean, a former General Motors executive who manufactured a sports car
with gull-wing doors and a rear-engine design, claimed that Morganroth
overbilled him.

From 1982 to 1993, Morganroth helped represent DeLorean in 40 cases,
including the bankruptcy of DeLorean Motor Co., a cocaine smuggling
indictment and his divorce from former model Christina Ferrare. DeLorean
was
acquitted of the drug charge.

Last year, a federal judge in Trenton, N.J., ruled that DeLorean's
personal
assets - including part of the estate near Bedminster, N.J. - could be
sold
to satisfy a judgment to pay Morganroth. The New Jersey decision also said
Morganroth could seize DeLorean's art collection, furniture and cars.

DeLorean, 72, agreed earlier to forfeit most of the land in his estate to
Merrill Lynch Credit Corp. to pay off $8 million in loans.

Under that deal, the remaining 45 acres and the Georgian mansion were to
be
saved for DeLorean's children, Zachary and Kathryn. Morganroth said
DeLorean's forfeiture agreement won't stop the land and house from going
to
him.

We had a similar situation with the E-brake not holding when we bought
the D. Turns out that our problem was with the bracket that connects
the ends of the 2 cables to the parking brake lever -- one of the cables
had slipped out. Was able to repair the bracket and return the brake
to functionality. You might try looking at the lever area before you go
and try removing a cable.

Rob, when you go to Wal-Mart don't look in the luggage department.
Instead look in the *automotive* department. The cases we have
described are actually low, flat, black, wedge-shaped tool boxes that fit
behind the seat of a pickup truck. They say "Tuffcase" on the lid. I
threw away the packaging so I don't know the manufacturer, model
number, or the UPC.

Pick one or two that don't look too scuffed, then shine them up with a
polymer protectant. That way you won't feel like "you might be a
redneck." :-)

The Wal-Mart items can be used as luggage, they are NOT luggage
racks! Those of us who bought the Wal-Mart cases already owned the
original DMC luggage rack, which you can still buy from DMC Houston,
DeLorean One, PJ Grady, DeLorean Motor Center, etc..

Installation of the racks was described one or two weeks ago on the
DML. To my knowledge no one else makes any racks that are usable on
the DeLorean. I think there are still plenty of the DMC racks available.
