Marc, I agree with Bill. The same problem he had also happened to my
car more than once. I don't think my bracket is broken, it just doesn't
hold
very well. Looking at the way it is designed, I doubt that it ever did
hold
well. I end up putting it back together about twice a year, a simple job
that doesn't annoy me too much. It seems like the connection to the lever
is the weak link in that chain.
I never gave it much thought before, but my car *is* an early one. Might
this be common in early DeLoreans? Did they improve this system on the
later cars? If someone knows that DMC came up with a better bracket
please mention it on the list.

My car has a Dec 81 build date, so if it was "fixed" with an improved
design, it didn't happen until fairly late in the game.

Subject: DML: DML response to DOA attorney
This is the text of the letter that was sent to the DOA attorney by
certified mail last Thursday, August 14th, 1997.
August 14, 1997
Dear Mr. Lebby:
In response to your letter of August 4, 1997 demanding all
references to the DeLorean Owners Association (DOA) on my website
be purged and suggesting defamation by myself and those who
author postings to the DeLorean Mailing List, I have sought legal
opinion and am instructed to respond in this manner.
My website is dedicated to Delorean owners and people who love
the car. It's a forum open for discussion by everyone and
censorship goes against my grain. I'm an American used to the
privilege of Free Speech and voicing opinions is a part of that
right. There was no defamation in any article on my website.
Furthermore, all references to the DOA have been either
completely accurate, or simply the opinions of the authors. The
existing disclaimer on my home page refers to situations just
such as this.
And, though you have no legal right to force compliance, I do not
wish to use the resources available to me to enter into a long,
unproductive court proceeding. I would think also that the DOA
has better ways to use their monies in the member-funded
treasury. Therefore, I will immediately include a broader opinion
disclaimer on my home page. This disclaimer will also appear at
the end of each new edition of the digest and in the "welcome"
message sent to each new subscriber.
Upon receipt from you of a listing identifying the articles the
DOA believes to be "negative, false, and misleading", my legal
counsel and I will review them and take the appropriate action at
that time. I look forward to working with you to resolve this.
Sincerely,
James V. Espey

The August edition of the DeLorean Owners Directory, with 126 entries
from Alabama to Puerto Rico to Japan, has been posted in the DMC-News
Lounge.
Mike Substelny, longtime DML'er and personal friend of mine, has
graciously taken over the responsibility of updating and maintaining the
DeLorean Owners Directory. With my hectic schedule, I was finding it more
and more difficult to maintain the Directory as it grew. Mike and I will
be working closely to increase participation among both internet and
non-internet DeLorean owners.
If you are not in the DeLorean Owners Directory, please fill out the form
at:

If you do not have access to the web, send email to
"directory(AT)dmcnews.com" with the message "send form" in the subject and
I will send you a text version of the form to fill out and return.
I expect the DeLorean Owners Directory to grow considerably over the next
few months as we've got registration forms going out in the following

They are great for tools, parts and cleaning supplies. They lack a little
to be used as traditional luggage, but would be great for socks,

Matt, CRITICAL, the handling is much effected by tire pressure. I highly
recommend that you follow the factory recommendations and that you stick
to
the factory specs when it comes to tire size. Recently, I took my "D" to
a
driving school and was very impressed with the way everything worked, even
with the wrong size tires on it. But I agree with you, the body roll

to be a bit much and an anti-sway bar would be a big improvement. My car

When you wash your car, do the wipers stop functioning? If so, look

electronics are], and seal it up.

Hi,
I was at a motor show the other day and saw a Lancia "MonteCarlo" car. It
was SO similar in appearance to a DMC that I had to take a second look to
make sure I wasn't seeing things. I know the chap who designed the DMC
shape also had a hand in Lotus and the VW Scirocco which certainly bears a
similarity. Anyone know about this Lancia? Apparently they're very rare

My rework involved putting new headliner material on existing pressed

that you would need to purchase new parts from one of the suppliers.

The D uses 2 separate cables leading from the handle mechanism
to each wheel. Most of the time, the only part that breaks is the
ends of the cable inside the car. Just remove the carpet boot and
driver seat if you want. There is a lever with a pivoting metal
plat on the end. The 2 cables slide in and lock into slots
on each end of this plate. This is where you will probably find the
break.

Hi,
I don't know if this is related to the mentioned "prototype" but in my
collection of pictures of the DMC that I've found on the net, I have one
of the left hand side of a car, slightly to the back (showing the rear).
It has different windows to the production car - the main pane is split
vertically about 1/3 to the rear. I wanted to ask what the origin of this
car was and it struck me that it might be an original propoganda shot of
the prototype. The pic has the word "DELOREAN" underneath in stylised
writing, though not the "DMC" logo style. I'm almost sure I got it on Dave
Takeuchi's page.

Subject: DML: DeLorean in 7 Years
Hi,
I'm currently going into college (Columbia University - woohoo!),
age 18, and a few months back I formulated this "plan" that would allow me
to purchase a DeLorean for my 25th birthday, in June of 2004.
I live in New York, so my plan is to buy my future D from P.J.
Grady. I assume he sells refurbished cars. I realize this is somewhat of a
stupid question, but does anyone believe his shop will still be around in
7
years? I sure hope so...
Secondly, what do you think the DeLorean will be worth in 7 years?
My current plan calls for me to save up $15,000 by June 2004. Most of this
money is coming from the years 2001 thru 2004, after I have graduated
college and I am making real money. In the five months since my saving
began, I've managed to save $878 (big whoop, enough to buy 4 tires ;] ).
Looking back on the decision to save 15K, I realized to my horror that a
decent DeLorean at that time may be worth somewhere around the 25,000
dollar
range! So what would a D that costs $15K today be worth in 7 years? Will
the
value increase THAT much in such a relatively short time or is it too
early
to tell?
Thanks for your help, and here's hoping this awesome mailing list
is
around in June of 2004, so I can proclaim that my plan worked! :)

Subject: Re: DML: funky windshield wiper problem
A couple years ago my windshield wipers developed a similar problem, but
I couldn't associate it with temperature, dew or any other common
factor, just an intermittent when I needed them. At times they worked
fine, although I usually don't take the car out on a rainy day, I
usually discovered that they didn't work when I tried the washer.
I pulled the wiper conntrol board and some of the solder connections
looked questionable, either possible cracks or just poor original
soldering. I resoldered all the connections, cleaned the terminals,
lubed the plug, and have had no trouble since. The problem may have
been in the plug and spade terminals but since I had the board out, it
only took about 5 minutes to resolder it.

Michael,
It sounds to me like the wonderful Lucas module is doing it's
sporadic "I'll work when I feel like it" thing. Refer to 3/6/2 and
note the two plugs that aren't numbered. They both plug into #3, the
wonderful Lucas module. They also plug into each other. Do that. The
only thing you've lost is the intermittent, that I never could figure
out anyway, and the wipers should work fine at both high and low.

If you don't normally do this, then you have a more serious problem to

Michael,
It sounds to me like the wonderful Lucas module is doing it's
sporadic "I'll work when I feel like it" thing.

DeLorean's new address: P.O. Box 285, Pluckemin, NJ 07978. He has a lot
of new projects in the works and you can write him directly at this
mailbox. To order his new video called "DARE TO DREAM" an in depth
interview with Ireland's John Kelly. 90 minutes of tough questions
answered by John DeLorean himself. Just send $29.95 check, money order,
visa or master card. Or call 1-800-351-7100. I just got it and it was
great.
If you are a DeLorean fan like I am we are in for a real treat with his
new "DII". I've seen a lotof details on this new awsome piece of genius
creation and I can't wait to own one. If you want more current
information on the man himself. Just write me at either the p.o. box
address or here at lena(AT)injersey. I'd be happy to communicate with you
regarding DeLorean's "Dare To Dream". Hope to hear from you soon! Would
you like to join the DeLorean Network? Write me: send a s.a.s.e. and I'll
send you the information on how you can join The DeLorean Network.

I have visited Grady's shop a few times in recent months and with the
work he has
going on and the cars coming in daily he probably won't catch up for 7
years.
He has a good size inventory and some cars that are for sale although he
does help match up potential sellers to buyers.
Check his shop out yourself He's only an hour from the bridge.

There are plastic fasteners that are of the christmas tree type holding
the
panels in. If you are careful with a screwdriver, or the special tool no
one
has you can remove them one clip at a time. Its rather easy but don't
force
them. The more support around them the easier they are to pop off. Just
don't go at it without looking at it.
My part has the date and initials over the drivers door. Nothing over
the
passengers door.
While you're at it replace the headliner if its bad. You can only take
these
apart so many times before they need to have the clips replaced. The
clips
are cheap but you have to find them first. Fastex makes similar if not
the
exact clip.

I believe nylon Fastex clips are the ones I use, too. I got a set of
clips
from Kapac three years ago that looked right but did NOT fit correctly
(must have been a mislabled batch left over from Ireland). The Fastex
clips do appear to be EXACTLY the same as the originals.
I don't remember the model number, but I can tell you how I got mine. I
used to work for a company that used Fastex parts all the time. They
had a Fastex sampler in the shop, which contained dozens of different
clips. I looked through the sampler, found the clip that matched the
DeLorean, and dropped by my local Fastex distributor to inquire about it.
He sent me home with a free sample box of brand new X-mas tree clips
that are a perfect match for my DeLorean. If anyone is desperate I think
I
still have a dozen or so left.

Bill, you might call Dave Donaldson at (630) 629 3839. He is the best
around
here but oh so busy. Also, you could try Schiller Park Automotive at
Irving
Park and Kolze. Talk to Harold or Debbie at (847) 678-5100 and see if
they are
interested - I hear they have done excellent work in the past. One other
thought would be Shepard Chevrolet in the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff area.
They are
the only past dealer that I know of that still work on DeLoreans but I
can not
vouch for their workmanship.

Subject: DML: Chicago Area Repair Facilities
From: dmcnews-approval(AT)world.std.com(AT)INTERNET at #EMAIL

Lent the Delorean to our son a couple of weeks ago for a trip to Chicago
(where he lives). It has developed runnability problems (probably fuel
system) and I need to find a shop there with experience working on Ds.
Unfortunately, the repair facilities list has NO listings for Illinois.
Since a number of Ds were sold new in the Chicago area, I'm sure there
are still one or two qualified mechanics in the area -- I'm just having
trouble tracking them down.
Would appreciate advice from any list subscribers living in the Chicago
metro area.
Thanks,
Bill

I had work done there two years ago while visiting Chicago - car broken
into, window smashed, stereo stolen, etc. The workmanship was fine and
they were very courteous. HOWEVER, they sold their entire parts inventory
to Rob Grady earlier this year so I suspect they are out of the DeLorean
repair business.
