The 82's and 83's have a single-key lock system as you mention. They went over
from the two-key setup in the early '81 models to the single key setup late in
the '81 series (I don't know the VIN cutoff, but it is in the service bulletins
as well as parts catalog when the change was made).

According to Service Bulletin ST-31-12/81, a "common key" lock system for the doors, ignition and storage compartment was introduced as of VIN #4188. Therefore, 1981's prior to #4188 utilized the two key system and all cars after that used a one key system.

Responding to Corey Stup's magazine request:
I was able to find copies of Motortrend magazine here at the IU
Bloomington library. I made copies of the following articles for myself
and barring any copyright infringement issues, would be glad to share the
articles for the cost of copying and mailing.
MT May81 "Delorean: The American Dream is Alive and Fighting for Survival
in Northern Ireland", 6pg.
MT June81 "Delorean: A preliminary finding of very good; but the jury is
still out", 7pg.
MT Dec81 "Delorean Versus The Great Names: John Z's baby squares off
against the GT establishment", 10pg.
MT Apr82 "Motortrend 1982 Import Car of the Year" delorean included but
won by Toyota Supra (?), 11pg total.
MT Feb83 "What's a Delorean really worth", 1pg.
The library here doesn't have Road & Track for the Delorean "era" but I
know it is available at the New York Public Library on 5th Avenue.
For those who can't get enough information, the following books are
available at the library here in Bloomington:
DeLorean, Autobiography
Dream Maker: Rise and Fall of JZD, Ivan Fallon
Grand Delusions: The Cosmic Career of JZD, Hillel Levin
Hard Driving: My Years with JZD, William F. Haddad
On a Clear Day You Can See GM, John Z. Delorean

Please disregard the last e-mail I sent about the incorrect address. All
the mail that was sent has been FOUND. Unfortunately, when I first spoke
with the manager, they said "nope... no mail. Sorry." Then after doing
some asking around, I found where they went.
If you have already sent your mail, don't worry as the other reciver knows
who I am now.
Thanks. And sorry for the panic.

This is true...For a while there were two keys for the
DeLorean...rather odd looking ones at that, in my opinion...
I have a late (October) 81 DeLorean with only one key...
When I bought the car...the previous owner gave me 7 keys...one
original DMC, Five Volvo copies...and one original DMC blank...

Anyone out there got a DMC luggage rack that would like to sell? I'd
prefer one that was in good shape, email me please!

Subject: Hissing in the dash
I have a hissing problem that appears to be coming from somewhere in the
middle of the dash. The hissing sound diminishes when I accelerate and
returns when I take my foot off the pedal. It doesn't matter whether the
heater\AC is on or off. Could this have something to do with a possible
vacuum leak that I may have that is also causing a consistent high idle
speed? Or is it more likely something to do with the climate controls?

Does anyone have detailed schematics of window motors, regulator, and drive
cable? Also, does anyone have any original equipment window motor they'd be
willing to sell cheaply?

Subject: Northern Virginia chapters
Dennis,
There is currently no DOA chapter in Northern Virginia. According to
Knut Grimsrud the Northern Virginia chapter shut down completely a few
years ago when all of the chapters had to re-incorporate. I don't own a
DeLorean yet but I'm currently looking for one. I'd welcome the
opportunity to help you with your DeLorean. I've got a fully equipped
two car garage that I'd be happy to let you use just for the experience
and to get to know someone in this area with a similar interest in
DeLoreans. I live in the Mt. Vernon area. My father has been a
mechanic for Mercedes-Benz for about 25 years. He lives a few blocks
away and would probably be willing to help us as well. As for me, I've
been tinkering with cars since I was a kid and have a pretty good
understanding of them. Call me if you're interested. My number is
(703) 780-4299.
I've been considering starting a DOA chapter here again. I'd probably
wait until I actually have a DeLorean though. I'm familiar with
incoroporating as I just finished incorporating my computer consulting
firm. Are you interested in starting one or were you just curious? I
know of several other DeLoreans in the area but the only owners I've
been able to talk to weren't exactly the car club type.

Door Lock
Does anyone know where I may get a replacement Door Key Lock mechanism for my
'81 DeLorean (or even the '82 or '83)?
Gold DeLorean Article
DeLorean World Volume 10, No 2 has an excellent article on the Gold DeLoreans
on page 20. The DeLoran Owners Association's video "Back from the Future"
includes a segment on the production of the gold DeLoreans. Association
Products Catalog and latest issue of DeLorean World has order forms for
ordering the items.
