Rob's green car was rescued by painting and not destroyed. As I understand it the vehicle's body parts and fascias consisted of blemished ones Rob had around the shop that were good enough for painting but not for sellinng to customers. Yes, the wheels are larger. They are 16s in the rear and 15s in the front. This was countered, I believe by using a 40 side wall tire instead of a 60 and I think they are also an inch wider each as well 255 and 215 respectively I believe, but I could easily be wrong on that part. I think he has also modified the front suspension into welded double A arms, but if he has that may not even still be on the car any more. There are slightly shorter springs in the car that were factory prototypes that very few, if any more, were made of. I don't know if he decided to put his amp zilla unit in the back or not. I know there are other proposed modificationns, changes, et cetera, but why spoil the suprise? Besides, as backed up as he is (it wasn't necessary but I just made an appointment 5 1/2 months in advance to make sure he could slot me in) he may never get to any of them. ------------------------------ From: James EspeyDate: Fri, 13 Dec 96 16:38:51 -0000 Subject: DeLorean Gift Ideas This is the first year for the "DeLorean Gift Ideas" list, and judging from the response, I'm sure that it'll turn into an annual event. Thanks to all those who suggested things for the list, and also to the companies that responded to my requests for items to list. Happy Holidays to all! James "Mikasa" Espey Moderator, DeLorean Mailing List http://www.dmcnews.com New for '97 - http://www.dmcnews.com/ ------------------------------ From: Delornut@aol.com Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 19:54:46 -0500 Subject: DELOREANS AS AN INVESTMENT Several folks have questioned the investment value of the DeLorean. It's not something that's evaluated by cost earnings ratios but it isn't too hard to put things into perspective with a little research. A fellow named Keith Martin has been gaining a reputation as one of the foremost authorities on the value of collector cars, particularly sports cars. He does a brief column each week in AUTOWEEK magazine and also publishes a magazine called SPORTS CAR MARKET. He follows the auction circuit and does research as to why a particular car sells for a particular price. In the case of the DeLorean he feels the price won't increase dramatically because there are just too many of them. 8500 units is pretty small production by Detroit standards but it's a bunch when compared to most collector cars. On the other hand, one of the DeLoreans competitors in 1981 was the Porsche 928. It sold for twice the DeLoreans cost and currently sells for an average price of about half the DeLoreans. The DeLorean has held its value a whole lot better than most cars but even when not taking inflation into account, it hasn't made anyone any money. It's the most exotica for the buck out there right now and when you figure in the value of the entertainment and satisfaction owning one of these cars brings it's a great value even if it hasn't proven to be, up until now, a growing financial investment. Bruce Benson ------------------------------ From: James Espey Date: Fri, 13 Dec 96 18:18:48 -0000 Subject: In or near Phoenix? Call me! I mentioned this once before, but I want to say it again - if anyone on the list is ever going to be in or near Phoenix and would like to get together for lunch/beer/coffee and talk about DeLoreans/compare cars/shoot the sh*t, call me! I work right near the airport and would even be willing to meet you at the airport if you've got a layover waiting for a connecting flight. Last night about 10:00pm, Don Gowler (The Silver Fox), called me from his hotel and we were able to meet this afternoon as he was on his way to the airport to head back to Chicago. It was great to finally meet Don and put a face with a name. He had some pictures of his DeLoreans (yes, plural!) and we a great time during our brief meeting at my office. In the past six months, I've been able to meet a couple of other list members this way and hope to meet more. Incidentally, I may end up in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area from 12/25 thru 12/28 - anybody in that area want to meet? James ------------------------------ From: Widdomaker@aol.com Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 22:01:42 -0500 Subject: Bad investment? Not that I bought my car for its investment value, but..... A new D (1981) asking price was $25K, This came down to around $20K after demand faltered, receivorship, and arrest of JZD. A good quality used 1981 today, asking price is $17 - $22k. How many other cars retain their value like this after 15 years? Just wait until it gets 20 -25 years old. I see the investment potential. ------------------------------ From: Ddl52@aol.com Date: Sat, 14 Dec 1996 09:57:30 -0500 Subject: Delorean Book Sale I have several of John Z. Delorean's autobiographies, Delorean, for sale. These books are NOT used. They are as they came from the publisher, shrink wrapped in mint condition. Price: 25.00, which includes shipping. Please reply if interested. E-mail, ddl52@aol.com ------------------------------ From: Bryan Pearce Date: Sat, 14 Dec 96 11:25:47 -0600 Subject: Frame Rust failures In Digest #200 Mike Substelny writes: >I don't doubt that frame rust is a legitimate concern, but the question is, how unsafe is it? Does anyone know of a DeLorean frame that actually experienced catastrophic failure and caused an accident? What part of the frame failed? What was its condition prior to failure? >I request that everyone on the DML please share your specific stories of frame failure accidents. They could save lives! I know of three frame failures. All of which occured at low speeds. Two of these frames failed in the rear at the point of connection between the lower control arm and the frame directly under the engine. The third failure was in one of the front shock towers. All three of these failures could have caused serious problems at highway speeds. It is important to note that DeLoreans with frame rust will, of course, last longer if they are not driven on a regular basis and exposed to the elements. My perspective is that of a person that drives the car everyday is every kind of weather. Anyone have any repairs done to the frame and know approx. costs? Bryan Pearce ------------------------------ From: Jack Danuke Date: Sat, 14 Dec 96 10:44:19 -0000 Subject: Re: DMC Floormats Just wanted to say a big "Thanks!" to James for putting together the Christmas list - I've already printed out a copy and "accidentally" left it out on the kitchen table with a couple of things highlighted. I also wanted to mention that while I know that DeLorean One does have great floormats, PJ Grady sells the same design and similar quality in both black or gray for $99.50 a pair plus shipping. Thanks again for putting this list together, James, and for keeping DMC-News going all year long - can't wait to see what in store for '97!
