Bob,
Fuse # 10 (20A) provides power to the A/C control circuit and fan speeds
1 & 2 and the "Lock Doors" circuit. The A/C control circuit contols the
relays for speeds 3 & 4. The relays get their power from the batery bus
powered at all times. If you do not have a Lock Doors warning light
with the doors unlocked and the engine running, either the fuse is bad
or it is not making contact. You shopuld check the fuse with an
ohmmeter, it may just look good. I have had to clean the spade contacts
for my radio, clock fuse and ended up cleaning the contacts for all the
fuses and lubing the plugs with LPS-2, (WD-40) would work as well.

Aahhhh - this is one of my favorite subjects. Over the 15+ years of
DeLorean ownership, I have tried just about everything that others have
tried, and probably some stuff that only an idiot would try.

Now, this is opinionated, but here goes:

First, a question ---- why would you want to SHINE your stainless steel.
Its NATURAL SHEEN is what you (or at least, I) want. Therefore, what you
should be looking for is a way to CLEAN it. Almost all product that clean
and/or shine the stainless contain petroleum products. This means they
leave a residue, no matter how slight. When the sun hits it just right,
voila, shine. BUT, when finger prints hit it, voila, GROSS SMUDGES.

I looked for a cleaner that would not only restore the NATURAL finish of
the stainless steel, but which would be easy to use for spot clean up.
After trying product after product, I ALWAYS come back to WINDEX. It is
inexpensive. It is friendly to the environment. It is easy to carry with
you. It does not attract fingerprints, and it removes moves problem spots
without leaving any residue.

Is there a downside? Yes! It doesn't do diddly-squat for the black
plastic side strips, louvers, bumpers, etc. My solution is to make sure
that everythird time I wash the car, I do these areas thouroughly with my
favorite (at the moment) treatment (Armor-all, Turtle Clear, etc. etc.).
Then even though I have just washed the car, I quickly go over it with
WINDEX and a paper towel (your results will be much better than with a
cloth towel). Touch-ups are a breeze.

Owning a D is a love/hate relationship. Each of us has his/her own pet
way
of doing things. After 15+ years of ownership spread over two D's, I find
that while I am always looking for something new and better, I invariably
come back to WINDEX (no, I don't own stock in Windex) and I keep wondering
why I tried something else.

I can't seem to get my defrost to ever work in my DeLorean. Is this
common? No air blows on the windshield in defrost mode. I do have the
"hiss" sound from inside the dash when the car is running and few minutes
after it's shut off. Also, my AC works great, but my heater is pretty
lame. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Subject: DML: Why I don't drive in the winter

The "Winter Projects" thread has stimulated a few comments about the
park it vs drive it in the winter issue. Here are my two cents.

Living right in the middle of the rust belt, I know that a lot of people
who
garage a sports car for the winter do so to prevent rust. Even the
DeLorean is susceptible to this. In spite of the epoxy coating the frame
can rust. Other parts of the underbody can rust or corrode, and the
stainless can develop pits if exposed to salt.

But the main reason I garage my car in the winter is to avoid accidents.
Those icy roads cause a lot of fender-benders, and I don't want my
DeLorean anywhere near them! Yesterday I saw a dozen minor
accidents in the snow. I was very glad that my DeLorean was safe and
snug in the garage.

I want to publicly thank Lee Seiler for all his efforts in having the
molded head key blanks made up. If anyone who is new to the list thinks
that $22.50 is a lot for two keys, I suggest that you first try and find
an original key blank, and then when (and if) you do, try and buy ONE for
less than the price Lee is making TWO of these available.

What's your next project, Lee?

Subject: DML: Version 1.0 of DMC parts database uploaded

I have uploaded the initial version of the DeLorean parts reference
database and search engine to the web site. The program contains a
complete searchable copy of the DMC parts catalog including diagrams.
There is no associated documentation yet other than the README.TXT
file, so you will have to experiment a little with the program to get
the hang of it. Note that you can zoom in and out on the diagrams by
clicking them with the left and right mouse buttons (experiment a
little and you'll get the hang of it).

The program is intended to allow easy insertion of parts cross
reference and price lists and I encourage clubs and organizations to
contribute some of their information in the form of "plug-ins" to the
parts database. The README.TXT file contains information on how this
is done.

This software is being provided courtesy of Knut Grimsrud free of
charge as a service to DeLorean owners and support facilities. Please
read the license agreement presented during the installation procedure
(basically "use at your own risk"). The software is accessible from
the DeLorean FAQ section of the DeLorean Mailing List web site
(www.dmcnews.com/faq/faq.htm) in the "OR CLUB" section.

Thanks to James for offering to host the rather large software
package. If you have comments or corrections, please drop me a line (I
already see a couple things I will be improving on for the next

Why not get a new engine? At the warehouse tour in Columbus we
saw a large inventory of factory fresh DeLorean engines still available.
They range from "stripped down" to "complete." I suggest you call DMC
Houston and see what kind of deal you can work out.

When you buy a used engine you can never be sure of what you are
getting. OTOH new engines are always new.

This must be fairly common, because similar questions hit the DML two
or three times a year. This problem comes from the nature of vacuum
operated ventilation controls and is not restricted to the DeLorean. You
can search the DML Back Issues to read about how other people have
solved (or failed to solve) similar problems.

Obviously you have a vacuum leak. Either the valves in the selector
switch are worn, or you have a bad actuator, or one of your vac hoses
is broken (or come loose). You may be able to figure out more about this
problem with a keen ear.

Do you always hear the hiss, no matter what position the selector
switch is in? Does the hiss stop when the A/C is activated? Can you
stop the hiss by jiggling the selector?

A few idesa: A loose hose or bad actuator will usually cause trouble
when the selector is in one or two certain positions. If jiggling can
decrease the hiss then the selector switch itself is the prime suspect.
If
the hiss is the same all the time no matter what you do, then the leak may
be in the inlet hose upstream of the selector.

Good luck,

A product that works really well for these areas is called "Black Again"
The advatage it has over "Armor-all" is that it is not water based. Which
means when it gets wet, it will not wash off and leave black streaks
down the side of the car. Also, the product is actually ativated by
UV, after the car sits in the sun for about 2 hours, the shine almost
doubles.

The picture (small) has the regular Delorean rims, not the ones we have
seen on the pictures of the "prototype's" BUT, it looks like there is no
place for the windows to go down.. Pictures I have seen of the
prototype have the vertical split windows, and we all know what our
regular windows look like. This looks like a solid piece of glass with
no place for it to open, unless the entire window goes down?! Where the
heck would it go???

If anyone goes, take some pictures!

Subject: DML: 140 MPH SPEEDO

Markus answered the 140mph speedo question with the info on the
original
DMC 85 MPH USA version and the Canadian 240 KPH version. This is correct,
these were the two versions put in the majority of the cars, but after
talking
with a few other DMC experts I have found out that DMC did in fact make
and
install a few USA version 140MPH speedos ( 140 mph in large white
numbers on
the outside and 240 kph in small blue numbers on the inside, just
opposite of
the canadian version ). According to the experts, these are very rare,
but
they were factory stock on a few cars. I have talked to a couple guys who
actually have these units.
Presently, I'm looking into duplicating this face and doing this
140mph
conversion instead of the 170mph offered. The re-calibration of the
speedo
unit is no problem once the face is changed.
Also, on running your car past the 85mph limit on the speedo. The
speedo needle is NOT hooked to the speedo cable directly. The cable
rotates a
housing around a magnet which is attached to the back of the needle. The
magnetic field is what rotates the speedo needle and a spring is what
returns
the neelde to zero. Re-calibration is a matter of adjusting or replacing
the
spring and magnets to work within the correct ranges. Because the cable
is not
hooked to the needle, running faster then 85 does no harm to the speedo.
The
only possable harm to the angle drive is the increased speed of the gears
inside may cause increased wear. The same goes for the speedo cables,
increased speed may increase wear.

I'm restoring my front end. By front end, I mean facia, radiator,
suspension, and front frame. I plan to have the lower grille, swaybar,
springs, and some assorted brackets powder coated. It had been going well
with only a few minor snafus (broken studs off on the lower grille,
spoiler, condenser), at least until I got to the frame.

The bad news is that some of the epoxy is very deteriorated, i.e. coming
off in huge pieces, but the good news is that the rust underneath is
pretty superficial, no structural damage. The scary thing is the amount
of epoxy deterioration that could not be seen until the steering rack and
lower control arms were removed. On a hint from Rob Grady, the worst was
found in the center section of the front crossmember that can only be
accessed by drilling a hole in the bottom center. Inside that cavity some
of the epoxy was paper-thin, probably from an air bubble in the original
coating process. Pretty dumb design - there's a small hole in the top to
let the water from the windsheld drain come in, but no where to let it
out.

It's amazing how well the epoxy holds on in some areas even though rusted
underneath. Most of the damage is concentrated on the right-hand side,
and seems to track with an impact to the right-hand stabilizer clamp.

I'm soliciting inputs on the use of rust treatment/refinish products -
this is a subject with a TON of varying opinions. What have you used with
what success? At this time I'm not ready to lift the body off the frame
or go the SS frame route, but it looks like I'll need to strip and
refinish from the gas tank forward. This car is NOT a daily/all weather
driver, if it was I'd be incliced to do something more intense. At this
point, I'd just like to get it sealed up again and back to the right
color.

Hi,

Being an electronics student, and a car fanatic, I was rather ashamed that
this one got me thinking rather hard. I still haven't got a foolproof
explanation but this is what I've come up with:

1) Check any relays that switch the lights on. If you have a bad one, the
current drawn from two bulbs may be enough to click it back the wrong way,
hence the "working fine with one bulb".

2) A common earthing-problem. The oft-placed advice of simply cleaning all
contacts in the lighting assemblies and the fuse box may well work
wonders.

Hope it helps!

The Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction will be held in Scottsdale,
Arizona (near Phoenix) from January 15th-18th. As Marc mentioned, they
have two DeLoreans consigned right now, both with no reserve. One is a
1981, the other is supposed to be a pre-production prototype. They are
scheduled to be auctioned Thursday and Friday respectively.

http://www.barrett-jackson.com

Their site has a complete schedule, along with a neat searchable database
of their auction results going back to 1988. I've gone to the auction for
the past three years and always have a good time. This year promises to
be no exception.

DeLorean Motor Company would like to thank all of the people who attended
our "Open House" event last month at our warehouse in Columbus. We hope
that you all enjoyed it as much as we did, and look forward to seeing you
again this summer in conjunction with the Cincinnati event being put
together by Ken Koncelik.

DeLorean World, the publication of the DeLorean Owners Association, has
asked us for an article about the event, and we believe that the story
would best be told by someone who attended the event.

If you would be interested in writing this article, please contact us at

I just noticed that the DOA home page at:

www.delorean-owners.org/

has a couple of nifty new things. One is their new DeLorean poster,
which looks pretty sharp. Another is some information about the next
Expo in LA. This Expo will be at Universal City! My new bride and I will
definitely be there in 1998.

The DeLorean Car Show page at:

http://idt.net/~dmc1219/

Now has a PDF copy of the DeLorean Club of Ohio' previous newsletter.
It is loaded with DeLorean pictures and includes an invitation to our
Christmas party January 10th, with a map to my house. DMLers are
welcome.

Does anybody have recommendations on where and who to have wheels
refinished. I understand powder coating the wheels is the way to go.
Any ideas of cost?

I hate to slam Delorean One but when they continue to be so rude it has
to be shared. I just called several of our fine Repair facilities to
inquire about wheel refinishing. As usual everyone was great on the
phone. I called Deleorean One, give my vin# and asked to hold. A couple
minutes later Ed Berstein is on the phone. He explains that I have not
bought from him in the past but have called to check on prices. This is
true. I do price shop. He also explained that his quality of product is
much better and I should be aware of the difference. I am sure his
quality is great, but the only other places I have ever bought from are
in New York and Texas. Not slouches. Well it doesn't matter Ed said, "
you stick with them, we don't want to do business with you." He than
hung up! All I can say is that, Thank God, a man like Stephen Wynne
owns most of our future. I am not sure I would want Ed Bernstein
contolling the destiny of DeLoreans.

Subject: DML: ~ DeLorean Auction Questions

Dear List members,

I have recently been doing some DeLorean shopping in South Florida. I have
found a 1981 DeLorean to be auctioned off, so I went to check it out.
According to the Auctioneer, the DeLorean has been in storage for 15
years and
runs 100%. After some research I found out that the DeLorean had been out
of
storage for over a year. The Autioneer tried to start it up..but the
engine
wouldn't fire over...and after spraying gobbs of Starter fluid into the
intake
it finally got going but the motor keep trying to cut of..pulsing up and
down...

Does anyone know what may have caused this??
Is this an easy problem to fix??

The DeLorean was Auctioned off for $14,000.00
Is this considered a fair price for it's motor trouble??

Thanx,
 ~ JAR (((((((88 m.p.h.)))))))

Bob,
How does the color compare to the factory color wheel?
Also, how are you getting in between all the spokes to polish them? =

Sounds like a good idea, you won't have to worry about chipping the
paint off anymore.

Subject: DML: DMC Key up-date

Hello All,

DMC Key UP-Date -- Dec-10 97'

At this point the key project is going well. After a half dozen
or so runs threw the dies we are getting nice looking keys. The first few
had some minor surface imperfections. The black Keys once polished are
indistinguishable from an original made in the 80's. They have the same
patina and color. But keeping in mind that these keys are not meant to be
confused with actual DMC oem Keys, we are making ours thicker. The are a
bit more comfortable and have a heavier feel. The material is different
as well. We are using an epoxy instead of PVC, which means that the key
tops are just about bullet proof in terms of daily use.

The DMC Gray keys are quite stunning to look at. The DMC logo really
stands out, and for owners of Gray interiors the match is very close to
the original gray carpeting.

Right now we are getting two and three sets a day finished. We will
start shipping on Friday, so if you have ordered and are in the first
dozen or so on the list you should be receiving your keys by the end of
next week.

We are going to try to ship every other day until X-Mass, I know these
keys are making great presents. We will continue this schedule until the
master list is completed. Then we will switch to the first come first
serve once a week shipping.

To answer one question I received in several e-mails........

Any owner who has different door and IGN key styles, Just get duplicates
of the existing keys you have and send those by regular mail and place
your order by e-mail. It only takes 20 minutes to re-machine the
duplicates be for they go into the dies. The size and shape of the
Duplicate key-top is of no consequence.

Mixed colors is OK too! one black and one Grey is no problem for blanks,
if you are sending duplicates, mark the color desired "ON THE KEY WITH
TAPE".
