Dear Stain,
I here what you say, and will try yet again to get a price out of "Robin
Hood", but you have to remember that DOC uk is only a small club with about
100 members, most of who don't need new seats, any ontpronuers out there
with the odd £ 5,000 to spare?...I repeat, I will try and get a firm price
and quantities.

David,
The problem maybe a service modification that was never done to your car.
I just looked it up in my Service Bulletins workshop book and there was a
modification done to the starter circuit to add more volts to it. The
service bulletin # is ST-05-2/82. This modification was implemented into
cars at the factory after VIN#2547 and since your car is VIN#2496 it seems to
have sorta just missed it. To see if this modification was NOT done on your
car, inside the electrical compartment behind the passenger seat and you will
see 2 circuit breakers, these are right next to the fuse box. One should
have 2 wires connected to it and the other one should have either 3 or 4
wires connected to it. I believe the wires are brown but could be wrong. If
it has the 3 wires connected to it that means the modification was NOT done
to your car. If you need the instructions to do this modification I am sure
that DMC Joe wouldn't mind sending you the information, but if he doesn't, I
could send it to you. Hope this helps.
Later,
Nick

I couldn't tell from your description if you were getting repeated relay
clicking sounds or just a single one, so I'm not sure if your symptoms are
the same as some I had at one time. In my case, I had a repeated clicking
noise from behind the passenger seat (several clicks per second) when the
starter would not engage. I had encountered this problem a couple times when
I had battery problems. In my case, the clicking noise behind the passenger
seat was the relay that powers the starter solenoid. The relay clicking on
and off repeatedly was caused by the voltage being too low, so when the
solenoid/starter drew current, the voltage dropped below the voltage
required for the relay to maintain closure, causing it to open. As soon as
the relay opened, the current draw was reduced, thereby allowing the voltage
to rise sufficiently for the relay to activate again. This happens over and
over causing the relay to repeatedly open and close. The cause of my low
voltage condition was a poor ground contact where the battery connects to
the frame (near the trailing arm bolt on the passenger side trailing arm)
causing excessive voltage drop as current draw increased..

Are you planning on selling a kit once all the design work is done? What
are the approximate costs thus far? (supercharger, parts fabrications,
etc..) For automatics, turbos are no good, so I'm real excited about the
supercharger idea! If anything, just to hear that whirring sound! lol!

Actually, it's 434 acres, and is the largest private estate in New Jersey,
even outsizing neighbor (and presdiential candiate, Steve Forbes), as well
as Jacqueline Mars Vogel (of M&M/Mars candy).

Take your starter to a shop that can rebuild
starters, alternators, etc. They will be able to
perform tests to determine if the solenoid is
bad, the starter is bad, or both. You should
also measure the voltage at the solenoid
to ensure your starter relay is working
correctly.

David,
I had a similar starting problem when I bought my DeLorean. A little
research revealed that the starter solenoid modification had never been
performed. Since I'm no mechanic, I took the service bulletin that describes
this procedure, sorry I don't remember the number, and had my mechanic
perform it. The car has started ever since with the turn of the key. You
might want to check this out before buying a new starter.

DEFINITELY a novel idea! One can continue replacing the batteries, OR
replace the bulb with a white LED & add a Lithium battery(as my elect. eng.

any easy stripping techniques removing paint from body. My "D" was painted
from dealer.
jim and cindy sawyer #04149
reply:
Hello Jim and cindy,

What a great winter project......Some will tell you that stripping the paint is labor intensive, and in a way that's true, however it's not as hard as it might seam. Your D is most likely painted with "Imron" paint. This can be stripped by using the stripper made for that paint and available from most Auto paint suppliers, one gallon is all you will need. I would suggest calling around and find a source. Then get the "painters" use information. Once you understand what is actually required as opposed to "work intensive" you would be in a better position to decide about paint removal.
In the event that you decide to remove the paint you have some choices, one is : on the car or removing the panels. If you so remove the panels you will see and panel damage when you get the panel off. Contrary to popular modern fables about 302 stainless, dents can be removed. And given you will have to re brush the panels the surface marks left by the straightening won't matter.
Say that you do remove the paint and damaged or not you are ready to re brush the D. You have some choices hear as well. One kind of neat Idea is to polish instead and end up with a very reflective surface instead of the traditional brushed finish. If you do strip the paint and want detailed information on duplicating the brush OEM patterns, write me privately (e-Mail) and I will explain how to do it , what tools are required, and the exact materials you will need and where to get them.

The last NEC car show saw Chris P pu tthe hard sell on me and I walked away with
three books - Dream Maker and Hard Driving, and DeLorean's autobiography. Having
read the first two (and anyone else who's read them will agree) 1) DeLorean
would seem to be prone to exaggeration and 2) THERE's NO WAY I'd invest money
with him!

Since the D is a side post mount, they're kind of hard to find. I tried to
rig up on of the top post knob type disconnecter on my Cadillac but never
could get it to work. I finally found an ad in Hemmings for the knob type
specially made for the side post batteries. He wanted $15 ppd a piece for
them. BUT, if you order 10 or more there was a 50%, yes 50% discount. So I
put up a message on our Cadillac Allante board and got about 15 people
together to get the discount on 25 switches.
I don't see his ad in Hemmings any more. There's one for $16.95+$3 to ship.
I have a few left if you want the discount. They'd be $11 including
postage. Oh, they install between the negative cable and battery. A half
turn cut the power with out and sparks or lights flashing. You also need a
washer on the battery end to make the connection right (I include one).
If you, or anyone else is interested, email me at gatewayaag@mindspring.com.
That's "gatewayaag" at "mindspring.com" if you read it on the net and have
the last letter missing.
I only have a few left, but if there's enough people interested I'll order a
case of them again to get the discount for everyone. If you want more than
one you'll save more money on shipping too. Lemmie know

Now I don't want to start a whole chain of emails regarding movies, but...
There is one movie that no one has ever mentioned before in which a
DeLorean is featured. The name of this movie is The House of the Rising Sun
(Drama, 1987). The movie has some very picturesque scenery from California,
and the car fits in so well with the atmosphere of the movie. Louis, the
main character (who's kind of creepy!) drives a DeLorean with black
interior. Though the car is featured for only about 7-10 seconds, it's fun
watching it (from front view) "race" through some windy roads.
Just thought I'd throw in a new reference!

Installing 15" wheels on the front of the car would completely cancel out
the very fine engineering done by Lotus to compensate for the 35/65 weight
differential.
BTW the rear OEM 15" wheels will not fit on the front of the car.

Contrary to popular modern fables about 302 stainless, dents can be

I have recently fitted a battery cut off switch to " DUSTY" but some of you
chaps might not like the idea of it as it involves cutting a 1/2" hole in
the plastic battery cover, and a smaller hole in the covering carpet!
I obtained a "HELLER" boat type heavy duty switch with removable red plastic
key, fastened one battery terminal straight on to it, made up a short length
of starter cable, to bridge between battery and the other side of the
switch. Than mounted the switch with one wood screw, in the top right hand
corner of the battery compartment, with the key hole facing forward. Put
some paint on the end of the switch, and carefully located the plastic
cover, this shows where to cut the hole, when the cover is replaced, the
black body of the switch is flush with the plastic cover. A small slit in
the carpet, in goes the key and "hey presto", a battery isolating/
anti-theft device you can use, by just reaching behind the seat( drivers in
my case).
Why this type of fitting? well the others mounted on the battery are so
difficult to get at, they seldom get used. I use this one every time.

Bill,
The easiest and least expensive cut off switch to install can be ordered
from JC Whitney item # 74GA7827P priced at $18.95. It can be installed in
the battery compartment cover. Be sure to install the switch so that it can
be
easily reached from the drivers position.

Perhaps some claims JZD has made might seem exaggerated, and I do agree, but
he keeps his dreams, goals, and aspirations high. This mental attitude lead
to much of his success (and perhaps some of the downfall) in life. Sort of
reminds me of Ross Perot a bit too....

My driver's side outer door handle broke last year under the same circumstances. Yes, there is a metal (cast aluminum, I think) handle available. I got mine from DMC Houston. Replacing it was easier than I
expected. The hardest part is getting inside the door by removing the two interior panels.
At first the aluminum handle would not quite fit on my early '81, because its beefier arm has to pass through the small opening in the door to reach the unlatch cable. I had to grind away a tiny bit of the
stainless where the handle meets the cable (only visible with the handle removed) with a dremmel. I assume later DeLoreans already have an opening big enough for the sturdier handle.
While you are inside the door you should consider adjusting and lubricating the locking and latching mechanisms. Check your door guides, too. You should *never* have needed to pull that hard on your door. If
everything were working smoothly in there your plastic handle would still be serving you today.

In response to everyone that asked for John DeLorean's phone number, I will
not give it out for the sake of his privacy, or I imagine he would get 1021
phone calls at once. I am going to try to write a follow-up letter, since I
didn't get a chance to ask him all that I wanted to. He told me that the
address on the internet should be correct, and I just hope he is talking
about the Lamington Road one. If anyone on the list has an address that
they sucsessfully used, it would be appreciated. (BTW: with a special
request, I could include SOME questions from people who would like to ask
him something, not all questions will be answered! Please e-mail me
personally about this, so we don't clog the list with a million messages on
this subject!)

I had a similar problem of and intermittent starter. See the results
on my DMC service history page at

I have one on my D. It is attached to the battery behind the passenger's seat
and works by pressing a button. I use it to "cut" the battery if I haven't
used the car in several days. I find it works great for my use, i.e., to
preserve the battery. But if you are looking to use it as a anti-theft device,
you might want to position a switch in a somewhat more convenient location, as
in that case you would probably be wanting to use it several times a day. I
believe battery switches can be obtained from Sears, Pep Boys, or other auto
parts stores.
