JZD's street address USED to be on the DMC-News website - he requested that
it be replaced with his PO Box address for precisely this reason.

Rumors are currently circulating that DeLorean is selling his estate and
moving to a much smaller residence in order to have enough money to finance
his latest car project. It is confirmed that he is in the prototype stages
and has 3 main designs for the new DeLorean. All designs feature gull-wing
doors. This news can be exciting if it's true. It'd be great to own a brand
new DeLorean. Can anyone confirm why he's selling his estate for sure?

Hi list..
A thought I had on this subject, was to maybe replace the current wheels, with
similar wheels, but for lower profile tires..
This would provide a solution to the problem of finding tires that fit the D.
I don't know if this also would affect the fine balance engineering.. Any
thoughts on this?
Another problem would be getting wheels that maintain the original look 81'
wheel design, in order to maintain the look of the car as much as possible.
They would probably have to be custom made (expensive)
Just my two cents,
Matt

Rory asked:

Running the same size wheels on all 4 corners of a
DeLorean is a Bad Idea. The wheels and tires are
sized to provide handling balance from front to rear.
The wheels on the rear are larger to prevent the
car from transitioning into oversteer while cornering.
The larger size is required because of the rearward
weight bias.
The DeLorean is set up to provide understeer
during hard cornering (this is true for most any
mass produced car). The natural tendency for
most drivers in loss of control situations is to
press on the brakes. This pitches weight forward,
increasing the grip on the front of the car, and
unweighting the rears. If the front tires on the DeLorean
are larger, the onset of understeer is delayed due
to increased grip. If the brakes are applied
in a turn (or even if you release the throttle quickly),
there is a high probablility that the
rear of the DeLorean will step out due to the
unweighting of the rear tires, putting you and
your car into a nasty spin.
The suspension of your DeLorean was designed by
Lotus Engineering, the best suspension engineers in
the business. I would recommend against second
guessing them.

That would be a mistake. It would upset the handling of the car, and it
would probably look quite silly. If you want to upgrade your wheels,
there is a place on the Internet (I don't remember the location, look in
the archives) that has custom wheels for the DeLorean. 15" front and 16"
rear would probably be a good fit as long as you keep the tire width and
outside diameter the same.

Hi all,
I thought this might be an interesting story to put on the DML. I
live in Chicago, but my home is in Huntsville, AL. Me and most of my friends
in Huntsville are scuba divers, and rescue divers as well. My friend wrote
me saying he had attended a training excercise on some river in Alabama
where they practice rescuing (or removing) bodies from cars that have
accidently gone into the river (seems to be a big problem in Alabama!).
Anyway, the car used was an old buick that was randomly dropped into the
water and it was left up to the divers to find it. Well, it seems that when
the divers went down they found three cars....two extras that hadn't been
put down! One was a toyota, and the other one couldn't be identified by any
of the other divers (only a few young divers were under the water). My
friend took a look and said it was in about 60ft of water, and half buried
in the mud. He automatically recognized it as a Delorean! He said it looked
like it had been down for years. The stainless was muddy with some slight
surface pitting, but still in good condition. The tires and rear of the car
were buried in the mud, but he said the car looked intact. He tried opening
the door, but it was buried in the mud too far. He looked in side with a
flashlight and said that the seats were missing or had rotted away. Other
than that he said the car was complete. How the hell could this have
happened? A stolen car perhaps? My friend wisely told his team that the car
was really just an old stripped datsun or something, and sent them home. He
wants to salvage the car at least for it's panels. Does anyone know anything
about this car? Anyone lost one? My friend swears this is true. Why would he
lie? Any info or feedback on this?

He is being forced to sell his estate to pay he debts! I dont think
there will be much left over when the creditors are done.
The estate auction has been scheduled, and postponed many times. I
believe the current schedule date is sometime this month.
The local NJ papers usually have a article hidden on the topic when
something happens.

hi
A few years back, I heard a rumor that JZD had to change the shocks ofh
the US version of the D, to conform to fender requirements.
Is it legal to change back to the original, stiffer, config?
Would this have enough positive effects on handling to warrant the work?
Are there any nasty side effects I should know about, before attempting
it?
Thanks,
Matt

There is a lot of information on this in the back issues.
Most of the DeLorean vendors sell springs to lower the car. I have a
set from DMC Houston, and I am happy with them.. The DMC Houston set is
a 4 spring set, PJ Grady also sells some springs, but I think they are
only for the front. (Call him and check).
The old method to lower the car was to "cut and swap", where you would
cut the rear springs, and put them in the front. Move the front springs
to the back. When I purchased my car, the previous owner had done
this.. The car looked great, but the back was never stiff enough for my
liking, the front was a bit too stiff!! (Makes sense the springs were
swapped and the weight requirements were different!).
If you want some cut springs I can sell you mine :)

Close. The springs were changed to raise the car for bumper and headlight
requirements.
> Is it legal to change back to the original, stiffer, config?
Yes. The original configuration isn't stiffer as much as it is lower.
Your DeLorean specialist of choice should have or know where to get
springs which conform to the original specification.
> Would this have enough positive effects on handling to warrant the work?
It has a very positive effect on the appearance of the car and also
improves visibility. The improvement on handling is there, whether it's
enough of a difference to warrant the effort probably depends on how you
drive the car.
> Are there any nasty side effects I should know about, before
> attempting it?
There are a variety of ways to perform the modification. You can lower
the car by cutting the springs for example. This is bad. You must also
take care when working on the suspension, the parts are under a lot of
stress and you can injure yourself or damage things if you are careless.
But such a modification is not, in and of itself, harmful.

Has anyone thought of or done a modification to have the gullwing doors
automatically? It's my understanding that when the doors are properly
configured they should open with very little effort. If an actuator is
placed somewhere inside the door frame to push the door a bit after
it's unlocked and unlatched, then when that actuator is activated do
you think the doors would open up? Used in conjunction with an alarm
system that will give you expansion options (e.g. Alpine 8080) I think
this might be possible. Just thought I'd throw the idea out there to
get others opinions...

Hey all, I just paid for a subscription with carmax so I could run a
few VIN reports. If anyone want's me to run their VIN just send it to
"devinm(AT)acm.org". I'll need the full 16 digit VIN number (e.g.
SCEDT26T7BD002366). My subscription is good until 2/1/2000.

Actually now that I look at it again I've noticed I don't have to use
my password, so feel free to run your VIN report yourself. My account
name is "devin_mitchell(AT)yahoo.com", and you can access the database
from www.carmax.com then click on "account access".
Enjoy!

Dear Members,
When I met with my friend, a fellow car lover (Mustang), he told me that he
saw a DeLorean in a James Bond movie, since "The SuperStation" or TBS, is
doing a marathon. It is called "15 Days of 007." He said it went underwater
and the wheels came up and a cover came over them. The movie was "The Spy Who
Loved Me" and Roger Moore was James Bond. Another friend of mine confirmed
this. Can a fellow DMLer confirm this also? I would like to purchase this
movie if this is true.
Thanks a lot,
John Feldman

John,
That was the infamous submersible Lotus Esprit. Close, but no cigar.
