Maybe I didn't expressed myself good enough, but what I meant with "REAL" VIN numbers was that we can doublecheck the VINS! The VIN on the DeLoreans out there AND the VINS I have in my papers. I'm not saying that I have a suspicion of any fake VINS, all I'm saying is that we can doublecheck. Now, suppose some of the VINS in my papers have a printing error. Then I can get the correct VIN from you who own the car. Co-operation is the keyword here.
I plan to make this info available on DMC Norway's Website in the near future: http://home.sol.no/~delorean
Thanks for everyone visiting our website! Will we reach 1000 hits before year 2000? :) Please take time to sign our guestbook too!

Hi, What is the best method for cleaning corroded wire connections (i.e. The plug that connects the power to the tail-light circuit board, and the board itself). I have had suggested to me using a file, or coca-cola to clean them, but I wanted to know if there is a solvent or very effective way to do this first. I also am going to be cleaning all fuse-box connections, and various connections in the engine compartment. thanks, Mike Schaefer Vin: 1118 Red/Black 5-speed

As an experienced and successful bookseller, let me clarify a couple of points before any of you get real excited about the possibililty of getting a "new" copy of Stainless Steel Illusion.
"Print on demand" services have been around for a few years now. Most of these services have been offered by book wholesalers who respond to orders from retailers. The books offered to far have been of the more scholarly, literary type. Typically these are text oriented books as opposed to picture books.
The process is considerably more complicated that simply scanning a book and then printing it. Two essential economic factors must be taken into consideration; i.e., how many copies can be expected to be sold over a measureable period of time and will the original author/publisher/photographer grant permission to "reprint" the book.
The bottom line is that unless B&N (who is doing this in partnership with a wholsaler), Ingram (a wholesaler who provides this service) or someone else can see a sufficient demand for a particular book, it won't be "printed on demand" becausse the cost would be even higher than the going rate for "rare" book in question.

Hi, I need part # for a piece that I can't find in the parts databases I have searched. It is the plastic cover in the engine compartment that stops water from getting on the wires in the back right corner, right on top. It is fairly large. I'm also in need of this part if anyone has it. I'll try to buy it new if I can get the # and look it up. Thanks again, Mike Schaefer

alrighty now ive got a big problem. My daily driver is in california getting serviced while i go to school in phoenix. So cause i wouldn't have a car, i brought back the delorean! Coming out was fine and the last week it has been fine. Except this morning, on my way to work and as i was pulling out of my complex, i pushed the brakes to stop for oncoming traffic and nothing happened. I basically had to stand on the brake pedal to get it to stop. and that BARELY worked. I put it in reverse and went back a ways and tried again. still like that. I had my car at don stegers place a while back and he told me that my pads were okay and i havn't driven the d too much since then. could it be the pads? i had a moment to check the drivers manual and it said where to add brake fluid, right in the front of the hood there. Could it be that its out of brake fulid? I dont know too much about brakes. The brakes on the car (lately) have always been weird, meaning that i would have to push the pedal abnormally far to get the car to stop but today nothing seemed to work. This is my only car until next week! does anybody have an idea what this could be? help!

I recommend taking a look at the masted cylinder see if there is a leak, or maybe you're out of brake fluid.

Hey Mike,
The part you are referring to is called the Ignition Coil Cover. It is part # 110227. It was superseded to that part #. The first part # that was used for that part is part#105905. The weird thing is that in the price list that USADMC had that I downloaded and printed out says the part is $58.67, but on their web page the price of the part is $109.00. If you want to double check that part go to the USADMC web page and then go to the online store and go to section 3-7-0. It is reference #16. Hope this helps.
Later, Nick VIN#1852......gonna be a Complete Tear-down and Rebuilt DeLorean, wish me luck!!

MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Hi All,
Work is progressing steadily on #5927. I promise to give more details later.
I have the front suspension all assembled, but of course now I realize something is wrong. The spindle spins in the steering knuckle, and I can't seem to tighten it up from the nut on the back attached to the angle drive.
The first problem was, I didn't have an open-end wrench large enough to tighten the bolt, and the angle drive. Obviously a socket won't work on this nut because of the angle drive, so I was left scouring Pittsburgh for a 34(?)mm open-end wrench. I had to settle on a large adjustable-end wrench (which I was fortunate enough to find in metric!). =)
However, I just can't seem to get a grip on the spindle tight enough to get any leverage on the nut to either loosen or tighten it. Hopefully there's a way to do this on the car, so I don't have to pop all of the new ball joints and steering ball joint to have the spindle pressed in.
Now, I have considered that the spindle, when tightened to the hub, will probably not spin due to the tension on it between the two nuts. However, something just doesn't sit right with me on that one. Primarily, the taper on the spindle would actually be getting -looser- not tighter as the outside nut was tightened.
I am guessing that the previous owner never tried to take it apart due to 1) the large size of the nut, 2) there are no markings on the nut indicating it has been attempted, 3) he didn't take off the other side, 4) the nut seems to be pretty darn well tightened already. Has anyone ever heard of a spindle loosening up like that under normal use?
Any suggestions? Here's what I have tried thus far:
- tapping the spindle in to get enough friction to turn the angle drive nut - gripping the "D" washer with channel locks - gently heating the nut to try and break it loose (or tight)
I'm considering freezing the spindle with liquid CO2 and tapping it in, so when it warms back up it expands and gets a grip (I have a large CO2 tank in my garage).
On a related side note, my front wheel bearings seem to have an interference fit with the spindle. Is this normal? I don't know if the two new wheel bearings installed in the hubs are correct, as they were there when I bought the (disassembled) car. Peter Lucas stated his whole hub slid right off the spindle when he removed the nut. That sounds more likely to me.
Any help is appreciated on both questions.
Now, the fun part. I spent the last few nights putting together a 'garage computer' with a video camera to allow y'all to see me assembling #5927 live via the internet. It should be premiering soon. I'll keep you posted as things progress.
Well, I'm off to Philadelphia in the morning to possibly buy an engine (yeah, I know, that's cheating), luggage rack, and set of Delorean World mags. I hope the engine fits in the trunk of my Grand Marquis. A Chevy 350 does, so I guess a D engine will be close.

Mike,
The best product to use on all the De Loren electrical connectors is "contact cleaner". This product is sold under several brand names and can be found at most automotive and electronic parts stores. Be sure to read the warning labels prior to use.

Chip,
From your description you have had a catastrophic brake system failure; this is extremely unusual. Here is what you need to do: Do not drive the car; next access the brake reservoir which is located under the carpet in the front luggage compartment on the drivers side floor. After lifting the rubber access cover unscrew the orange cap. You don't have to remove the cap, just pull it up enough to see if there is any fluid in the receiver. If it is empty you have had a brake system hydraulic failure.
BTW; if indeed the system is empty of brake fluid your dash mounted "red" BRAKE warning lamp should be lit continuously. We have found many cars with this plug detached, if that was the case your warning light would remain off.
In any case locate a reputable brake service facility, and have your car transported there for the proper service.
If the service personal need any assistance they are free to call me at 770 631-4800 9 AM-6PM Mon.-Fri.

Dick Ryan has a point regarding re-printing Stainless Steel Illusion in = hardcover. It would not be nearly expensive to reprint it in a = softcover edition, particularly if the color sections were reprinted in = black and white. I would guess that at 15-25.00 each pre orders for = 1000-1500 copies could be presold, particularly if this edition had = updates and perhaps a new chapter by Lamm. A lot has happened since = 1984 at between libraries, DMC/DOA folks and BTTF collectors, I'm sure = it would sell well, particularly with SSI's reputation as the = unchallenged definitive look at the DMC.

Not just a member of the list. You can always start a poll requesting the ages of the DML members if you desire.

Are you the original first buyer of the car? If so then your car may have been held up in the factory prior to shipping. Many cars were held in the Export Vehicle Preparation section awaiting attention having failed final inspection and then subsequently were upgraded. Secondly, if your car had a replacement hood at any stage after 1982 then it would have had the flat hood fitted. The factory bulletins are by and large correct, but the way I figure it there are a lot of hybrids out there for a variety of reasons. Robert Lamrock Belfast

This is one of the toughest techical problems I have faced in restoring cars for over the last 30 years. The best method is to sand blast the connector. But this can be messy. Sometimes a little carbertor cleaner or penetrating oil help.
When I can't sand blast, I dip the connector in phosphoric acid metal prep. Then rinse in water. I am also experimenting with TARNEX now.

Will contact cleaner work on electrical contacts that have a some corrosion (powderery greenish white stuff) or is filing that down the only solution? After getting this stuff off this there a coating that could be placed on the contacts that'll keep them clean and not interfere with continuity (kinda like putting pretroleum jelly on battery terminals? -I never tried it seems it would get the compartment messy?)
Thanks!

Hi, After working on cleaning my engine bay yesterday, I was wondering if anyone had found a better way of holding open the engine bay cover, the original bracket is not the best, as the knock on the back of my head will contest to.
I thought it might be possible to fit a couple of gas struts (perhaps taken from a conventional hatchback) and would be interested to hear if anyone had tried this.

p.s. I took my car for its first drive out in public yesterday afternoon and I caused quite a stir when I stopped outside the bank ATM machine.
