I have owned my D since 1985 and 1 Month into ownership it wouldn't start. I called Delorean One and Ed Bernstein walked me through the Inertia switch problem and not a penny was had by him. He and other suppliers have helped me and shared my business over the years. My experiences with him have always been very polite and never anything but professional. He is a businessman and wants to take and ship orders and has been a promoter or the delorean since the beginning. Because he choses not to respond to these attacks he appears guilty by omission from response. I would like to hear the rest of the story before I change my opinion of him. Hey List,
I just got a quick question...how do you change the 6 fir tree snaps on the lower door trim? I just pulled mine off because the bottom of it has never been connected properly to the door and now since I have it off I want to be able to fix it before I put it back on the door. Is there a certain procedure to remove the carpet that is covering the fir tree snaps to be able to replace them? If it is too much involved I have been thinking of just asking PJ Grady to do it. I don't want to ruin a perfectly good lower door trim where new ones are in the price range of $200 +. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I've spoken about this before, and every time I hear it, I'm forced to respond. Since I've had my DMC, I've done biz with PJ Grady and Houston. They've both been wonderful to me, and without them, I'm sure the DeLorean would right now in the garage under a large blanket of NC dust. But the first week I had it I called D-1. A woman answered, I asked for a catalog. They sent me a photocopy. Ok, no problem. I called to order parts. Out, out, out. So I asked the man if he could recommend any other places to find these parts, I really wanted to get the car on the road. Boy, that was the wrong thing to ask. To make my long story short, I found out later after reading post after post about D-1 that the man I talked to was Ed. And I was glad that they were out of the parts then (if they really were) so I didn't make the mistake of making him my parts dealer. I know Ed moniters this list, otherwise, he wouldn't know where certain people got their parts from, so Ed, I present this question to you; your service is so outstanding, and so better than everyone elses, why are you so intimidated by the other places? How many postings do you see about how badly Rob Grady has talked to them, or how Steven Wynne has refused to serve them?

What I can't understand is why anyone on this list would EVER
consider even approaching that place of business, based on the reports
from list members. I do not know why folks with these negative
experiences, if they are members of the DeLorean Owners Association, do
not write to DOA to complain and demand that the DeLorean One
advertisements in the Association magazine be stopped.
I am a member of DOA. Many years ago I did buy several hundred
dollars worth of parts from D-One. Since then I have not had occasion to
deal with D-One & purposely have avoided that based on the experiences
related here on the list. I have NOT complained to DOA because I have
not had personal negative experiences with D-One. Perhaps I should call
for a catalog & see what the result may be...

Speaking as a non-owning DML member, I can say I have never had any experiences of D1, but there are equal numbers of club members over here who have had great service and poor service alike. D1 seems inextricably intertwined with the DOA, and I think the explosion in the DeLorean internet community allowing franker and faster information exchange than any quarterly magazine could produce, it has put Ed's nose "out of joint".
There was some major argument between Simon Lees-Milne and the DOA which means Simon has refused to have anything to do with them since. Simon refuses to tell us what exactly happenned, but the recent argument between Chris and David Knudsen has added fuel to the fire. I think the argument is simply a difference of opinion, and David's refusal to acknowledge Chris' opinion in print has stopped Chris sending out DOA brochures to new members of our club. We are now seriously questioning affiliating the 2001 "Eurofest" event with the DOA.
I'm sure D1 and Ed have contributed massive amounts to the DeLorean community - that is unquestionable, but as a member of the DOA, I am a little tired of reading the Owners Stories in DeLorean World which seem to revolve around a D1 restoration and their wonderful service. I don't recall any stories mentioning PJ Grady or DMC Houston in the same light, but please prove me wrong.

(continued)
I got called to L.A. on business rather suddenly this week, so I took the opportunity to visit DeLorean Motor Center in Garden Grove. I felt like a kid in a candy store! There were 3 D's out front, at least 10 in the yard, and another 10 inside the building. Parts galore everywhere, too. Don took 2 hours out of his busy schedule to show me around (I arrived right at closing). Sadly, the "World's Fastest DeLorean" (Banks twin-turbo Buick V6) was in there -- minus the front end! The new owner had smashed up the car pretty badly. Don is bringing it back to life though, slowly but surely.
I also bought a used Centerforce Dual-Friction clutch from him... in nice shape. He threw in a new takeoff bearing, too, so that was a plus. Coming home, I didn't want to put it in my suitcase as it was heavy and dirty, so I put it in the back of my carry-on computer case. Now going through airport security with that thing in my bag was interesting. I never saw one of the x-ray guards have quite the same expression as the lady that day. She asked me to "please open the bag -- slowly. Very slowly, please".
Trying to explain a) what a DeLorean was, and b) why I would have a clutch for one in my carry-on bag was an excruciating process, but eventually I managed.
(Just for reference, for any of you contemplating doing the same... a DeLorean clutch pressure plate and friction disk has the same radar cross section as an anti-personnel mine. Might be best to check it through normal baggage.)
But back to the car itself. I also managed to get all of the hard lines and such run on top of the frame, underneath the body hump-tunnel. Due to lack of space, I have the car "jacked up". That is to say, the body is resting on top of 2x4 wedges on the shock towers in the front, with the shock towers themselves resting on jack stands. The rear of the car has the frame resting on a 2x4 on the floor, while the body is supported at the rear jacking points. This makes for a tight, but workable "V" from the rear.
I've also had some trouble with removing broken body mounting bolts. It seems that 3 of the square nuts had broken the sheetmetal cages they were in, thus rendering them impossible to remove. The previous owner simply cut the bolts to allow the removal of the body. Not having access to welding equipment, I simply bent the cages back into shape, and used a 1/2" nut and bolt to apply pressure to the cage on either side, then epoxy putty to secure the bolt in place. Not exactly pretty, but you can't see there anyway, and the repair looks like it will be more solid than the original. The cage now has support on both sides fromthe mounting bracket, as well as the original welds on the cage.
The DeLorean Restoration WebCam is now functioning, albeit in my den. I hope to be running the wiring down to the garage soon, so all of you can follow the car's progress. I plan to use http://www.camarades.com for this, as it allows a really nice 'moving' picture, rather than a static-but-changes-every-5-minutes picture. As long as it doesn't kill my cable modem, it should be fun. I'll post the URL when it's up.
That's about all I can hack writing right now. I'll keep you posted of any new developments. Oh, by the way... What do I mean by "Vixen"? That's my D's temporary name. I'm one of those people who always names their vehicles, and Vixen just kinda struck me. The stainless steel fox, you know? =)

Well,
It's been a while since my last update. For those of you following the saga, I'm reassembling #5927.
For starters... Let's see... When we last left our hero he was trying to get the front springs installed. That's not a very easy task on this car. I tried three different types of spring compressors before I found one that would work. If you have access to a scissor-type compressor, that's the way to go. I didn't, but eventually found that the MacPherson strut compressors (from AutoZone) were long enough to do the trick. I wasn't entirely happy with how they worked, but due to the D's design, some cleverness was required.
First, you need to mount them upside down, so to speak, with the tightening bolt at the bottom. You also need to leave the top 2-3 coils uncompressed so the tops of the compressors don't hit the wishbone. Still, it took a bit of hammering with a rubber mallet to pop them in to place.
Next, I had asked about the spindle being loose in the steering knuckle. I'm still working on that, but I got some great tips from a few of you out there. Thanks again. I'm going to be tightening that up tomorrow night.
I also went to work in the luggage compartment, removing 19 frozen bolts on the access panels. Many of the bolts simply snapped off in the rivnuts, so those will have to be replaced as well.
A big step for me was getting the air box assembled and into position. The evaporator core had the large fitting twisted off of it, but I ran to the local junkyard and grabbed the fitting off of a similiar evap., and had it heli-arc welded on and pressure tested by a local shop. ($20) With that in place, I proceeded to mount the air boxing into the body.
Up until now, I've been used to having quite an open, empty feeling to the cockpit of the car. As I start to install more and more into her, she's starting to take the close, comfortable feeling that you all talk of with the D. All that stuff under the dash is really crammed up in there, eh? =)
Work has kept me from doing too much at all during December. I managed to break away to Allentown, PA, to pick up a luggage rack and a parts engine. The engine looks nice, but has been in a fire. It turns free -- to a point. I never saw a situation quite like this. The engine will turn almost exactly 90 degrees, then seize. I can hear a click from the left cylinder bank when it locks up, but I'll investigate that more fully later. I suppose it will help to get the engine out of the trunk of my car. It's been in there the last week. In a way, it's kind of nice having a "14 cylinder" Mercury, but I'll be glad to get it out of there. I just need the time to have a neighbor help me lift it up out of the trunk.

Does anyone know of a list that has been put together that describes all of the areas of the "D" that should be upgraded or updated because of problems identified on this mailing list? This would include such fixes as changing the plastic overflow bottle to a metal one, bigger alternator, fixes to door locks, running alternate trunk release cables, etc. It seems this would be an invaluable guide for all current and potential owners. While I realize there will be problems isolated to specific cars, such a list would cover the majority of repeat problems identified or fixes to inheritly poor construction areas. Perhaps such a list exists and I just have missed out on its location. Any thoughts?

The way it's supposed to work is the fasteners are loose in the holes so they can move around a bit as they center themselves in the holes in the door. If your fasteners are not loose (moveable from side to side), they are probably captured by the adhesive used to tack the carpeting to the door panel. The only solution I was able to find for this problem was to cut the fastener off and use a dremel tool to grind out the head of the fir tree.
If the fasteners are loose, they can be removed but they are difficult to get out. The head of the fastener is shaped like a big, fat comma. When the fasteners are installed, the pointy part is inserted into the hole in the panel and the whole fastener is twisted until the round part of the fastener squeezes into the hole. To get the fastener out, you have to reverse the process - "unscrew" the fastener by working from the round end to the pointed end. I was able to use a pair of very grippy needlenose pliers and a very small flat blade screwdriver to get the process started. You need to be a little careful because the plastic door panel can crack or split.

The Lambda counter is located under the dashboard next to the steering column. The speedometer cable passes through the counter (that's why there are upper and lower speedometer cables). The counter measures percent of use of the oxygen sensor, and the sensor has a predicted 30,000 mile life. That means that a Lambda counter showing 020 has travelled about 6000 miles since the last reset (20% of 30,000). The counter should never vary more than about 250 miles from the odometer. If it does, your odometer has been tampered with or your car has had a rare upper speedometer cable failure.
To reset the counter, remove it from the car and look on the right side. You should see a small plastic disk with two holes in it. Using a pair of snap ring pliers (needlenose work also) rotate the disk until the counter reads 000.

hey All,
I found out how to remove the old Fir Tree snaps. I thought it was a big process where you have to take then out from the other side of the panel, but I called Rob Grady, and he just said to grab them with pliers and twist them out on an angle and sure enough just like he said and it all worked. I was able to get the first 5 out easily but the last one is always a pain, but I managed to get it. Next time I order something from PJ Grady I am gonna throw those fir tree snaps in with the order. Thanks to everyone who offered their help. Happy Holidays everyone.
Later, Nick VIN#1852.....tear-down and rebuild restoration
