Dec. 20:
Okay, so I figured out the problem with the angle drive nut and my
"spinning spindle". I tightened up the spindle nut to use for leverage,
then worked the angle drive nut loose with a large (metric)
adjustable-end wrench inserted into the shaft of a bumper jack for
torque. Sounds strange, but they make excellent breaker bars. The
reason the nut would not tighten was due to a bunch of gunk in the
threads which the previous owner had not cleaned.
Now, every book on auto repair always says to clean the threads of every
nut and bolt before reinstalling. Take that seriously! Not only will
dirt affect your torque readings, but it may stop it from tightening
sufficiently at all. This time, it actually jammed the nut into place
before tightening it sufficiently.
After pulling the spindle, I cleaned the taper end, then scuffed up both
the taper and the seat lightly with 150 grit sandpaper so there would be
a bit more friction on the reinstall. I cleaned the threads carefully
(I use a circular wire brush attached to a bench grinder -- $4 at Home
Depot) and cleaned the nut threads with a toothbrush. I'd prefer to
'tap' the nut, but no one in Western Pennsylvania carries a 36mm coarse
thread tap. I'd venture to guess this would be a hard thing to find
anywhere. Then, just to make sure it would seat well, I used LockTite
242 (the blue stuff that smells like crazy glue) on the taper.
Then, I carefully threaded the angle drive cable through the spindle,
and tightened the nut. Presto, it was tight against the steering
knuckle with just finger torque. Cleaning the threads had done the
trick. 140 ft-lbs of torque later, my front suspension is done.
Now on to the rear. The last things I had to do were install the
trailing arm bolts (P.J. Grady) and mount the shock/spring combo to the
hub carrier. The problem though, was the KYB shocks have a bushing
that's just a tad too small for the 1/2" bolt that runs through them.
Luckily, I had a nice brand new 1/2" drill bit, and carefully drilled
out the bushing (about 1/16"). The bolt slid right through, the nut was
tightened, and a little bit of torque later... the rear suspension is
done.
Note on the KYB's from Marty -- WING2D@aol.com:
"On a different note, the KYB shocks you've got. I spoke with a guy at
KYB
today about this setup ( I just HAD to know the story ). He told me the
shocks you've got are some units that Fred Lockett used to get from them
back
in the 80's and then modify himself to make them fit the Delorean. Fred
used
to install the bottom rings and do some other stuff to them to make them
fit.
They are NOT something KYB ever made specifically for, or recommended
for,
the Delorean, nor are they interested in making any now. ( I tried ! but
they
weren't interested ) Sounds like you've got some collectors items there
!"
As luck would have it, I found an old catalog from Fred Lockett (He was
DeLorean Specialties of Philadelphia a few years back). It answered my
question about the non-stock coils I received with the car. It turns
out that I have the complete suspension setup that Fred used to sell...
Lowered & softer springs (2" front, 1/2" rear, manufactured by the
original equipment DeLorean spring manufacturer in England), rear sway
bar, KYB gas-adjust shocks, etc. I have two questions about this setup:
1) How does a rear sway bar affect handling? Anyone have one that
could give me some insight?
2) Does anyone know how to adjust the 'gas-adjust shocks'? I recall
that they can be tuned somehow...
Now I mentioned that the front bearings seemed a bit too small for the
spindle, and Marty helped me out again:
"The tight fit on the wheel bearings to the spindle are something I've
run
into many times. It seems the aftermarket wheel bearings ( SKF- etc )
are
about 1 thou smaller then the originals, why I don't know, but anyway.
I've
had some go right on and others hang up, like you said, to almost be a
press
fit. Use some emery cloth and work on the spindle a little until you get
the
wheel bearing to slide on. It needs to be a slip fit, not a press fit.
Make
sure to tighten the spindle/wheelbearing nut to 125 ft/lb. I know its a
lot of
torque, but it's what is required with everything designed like it is."
He was right on the money. I did as he suggested, and now they slide on
with just a bit of wiggling. Perfect.
The front brakes go on on Wednesday, and the wheels shortly thereafter.
I got the rest of the lines I needed for the frame today, so with a bit
of luck, the body will be resting on the frame, frame resting on the
wheels, wheels resting on the ground, by Thursday. The WebCam should be
up Wednesday morning, so some of you may be able to see the happy event
live. I'll post the URL on my homepage, http://www.forwardlook.net/DMC
as soon as the camera is up.
To be continued...

All De Lorean's were fitted with foot well vents. If you're not getting hea=

  Hi again,
Currently I only get heat from the center vents and defrost

flash light and found nothing. I have a low Vin #, was it a later

Your non functioning interior and door light s are all controlled by the wi=

Hi, I'm getting things fixed on my D finally, next on the list are the
interior lights. The only ones currently working are the Dash lights
(white ones above spedo, and other gagues), glove box light, and the
center temperature control lights. The doors, and all other interior
lights don't work. The dimmer control doesn't control anything, it just
spins freely. The door lights are disconnected, which brings another
question, why are there 4 wires on each side, with only 2 connections.
There are 2 sets of 2 wires that go to each door. Where do these lights
gets hooked up at? Has anyone had this same problem?

Ref writing in door insides...My Grey Auto vin.5638, reg. number AXI 1698,
has a date of Oct.81 on the door vin plate...yet written inside the doors in
marker pen is May82..indeed it was registed and taxed by the factory in May
82..I assume mine is not typical, as much of the intervening time was
probably taken up during the conversion to Right Hand Drive. Personally I
think the date in the door headliner is an good indication of any final
adjustments made just before they "left the factory" rather than the date
the chassis plate was fitted. This is probably much more complicated with
the majority of the cars that were shipped to the USA.. did the quality
control works in the USA write anything in the headliners? Mine is also
initialled next to the date..are all cars like this?..all the ones I've seen
in the UK are..If so, we could organise cars into groups from specific
individuals or shifts / inspectors at the plant!
Speaking of bits of paper found in the car I have a red/pink Delorean
Motor Cars LTD. drivers licence, no.A0178, dated 1st June 81, in the name of
Dennis Patterson, Department...Test, person 240...nice find eh?
Happy and peaceful Christmas to all,
Chris Parnham DOC uk.
BTW..I think the moderator could be right...lets start off the new
Millennium with a slightly "less aggressive" attitude..quite a few of us
lost our cool over the last few months ( some of it was "moderated" away!)

Dear Group,
When I went out to start my D up this morning it fired up nicely even though it is near zero and the wind chill is somewhere in the -20 to -30 range. As usual I let it warm up for a few minutes before heading out. When it was ready to go I attempted to depress the accelerator and it was stuck in one position. No play. It was fine when I started it. Can someone point to the first place to look? Thanks again.

My guess is that the doors were assembled separate from the
rest of the car and merged at the assembly line. It wouldn't make
much sense to install all of the inner door stuff with the door
mounted to the car - too much back stress for the assemblers.

My guess is a faulty mode switch or mode switch vacuum
manifold. The mode switch is the one that selects the
type of ventilation you want - defrost, heat, vent, A/C, etc.
It is a two part device - and electrical part to control the
fan, A/C clutch, etc. and a vacuum part that controls the
ventilation flaps in the plenum. The vacuum part is
shipped with a small amount of grease sealing the
vacuum control. Over time, this grease evaporates/
solidifies/whatever and no longer provides a
good seal. This leads to erratic ventilation systems.
The switch can be rebuilt at home (see 'zine #3) or
replaced with a new unit.

Hi all, I just received a quote from Metropolitan Insurance companies on
DeLorean insurance. They quoted 2,800 dollars. I will be 17, have good
grades and I took Drivers Ed. It will be written off my parents policy.
I am a male and I live in the northeast. The car would be covered for
everything, all year round. Does this quote seem steep? Thanks.

 Mike Griese >>
Mike and the rest if the List,
I figured as much that they installed all of the interior door parts before
the door was installed on the car, but what I don't understand is that the
piece of paper I found inside the door is a photocopy of the door lock
setting procedure (I am guessing they just printed up a lot of them and
passed them to the employees to set the door locks) and it has blue pen on it
that had the date written on the top of it which was April 29, 1981. So what
I want to know is that if my car is a June 1981 build like it says on the VIN
plate, how could the car have been built on April 29, if it wasn't supposed
to be built until 2 months later? Weird stuff, huh? Does this make sense to
anyone else? I am assuming that the magic marker that was dated May 31,
1981, is when they finished assembling the driver's side door. Also there is
a lot of numbers and stuff written on the top part of my doors, the part that
gets covered when you install the headliner, for some reason someone wrote
the word "Skins" on both doors. If anyone is interested enough I will take a
picture of that and the numbers, maybe it might mean something. Happy
Holidays everyone.
Later,
Nick

To all teenage delorean owners and wannabies
You must weigh the factors in volved when getting insurance
Ryan, in your case $2800 is about right all things considered
Statisticly you are in the highest risk group to insure.
Ask to be quoted on a similar valued and classification car
Like a 1999 Neon , Taurus, Mustang GT,or Pontiac Firebird. I would bet that
the quotes won't be that much different.

Hi all,
I finally found it...the DeLorean of my dreams!!! It is EXACTLY
the kind I wanted; color, transmission, EVERYTHING!!! The coolest
thing about it is that it even includes a car alarm with built in keyless
entry and Sony CD stereo w/ removable face!!! The Lord does hear our
prayers! Now here is my request: please help me find a home for my
twp collections I have for sale. I have tallied up the total on them and
they
come out to be the right amount I need! So here goes:
Ninja Turtle collection:
about 530+ action figures
200+ vehicles,
ALL weapons included,
Includes the rare Scratch and Hotspot figures,
Both playsets,
3/4 of ALL figures are in either Mint or Near Mint condition,
VERY FEW are under this condition,
Asking price: $8500 OBO
Star Wars:
about 60 figures
weapons included for most
Vader carrying case
Most are Mint or Near Mint condition,
Asking price: $5000 OBO
OR
both collections for $12K.
I need some help, and I'm asking everyone who may be
interested or may know someone who might be. This may
sound a little steep, but really it is a great find. These collections
are immaculate! The money will go toward my DeLorean.
I only have a couple of weeks so I really will appreciate all of your
help. After 8 years my prayers HAVE been answered!
Greatly appreciative of ALL help,
Robert Greenhaw

Dear Rich,
There was a factory service bulletin covering Safety Campaign RA-0002

installation..The letter to dealers was dated1/20/82.
