I wish my De Lorean has quirks like that. My doors and frame have 4512
written all over them.
Erik Geerdink
4512....just another De Lorean....but it's my De Lorean!

I put in a Sony Minidisc head unit, a JBL 200 watt amp, and Rockford Fosgate
speakers, including a 10'' subwoofer. The box I put in goes on the rear
parcel shelf, and was custom made by yours truly. It took me about 40 hours
of work to make it look and perform the way I wanted it to. It looks like it
was designed for the car. Eventually, I'll post pics of all of the upgrades
I've done to my car inclusing the latest... an integrated, "in-dash" 10 cd
changer hidden behind a retractable door, and a retractable "in-dash" dual
cupholder. :o)

With my latest official inspection it turned out that my front wheel
bearings (both) need to be replaced. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I suggest replacing them. Heck, now why was that so hard??

The 'stand' of the De Lorean Owners' Club (UK) was featured in the January
2000 issue of Classic & Sports Car magazine, a United Kingdon periodical.
Their stand, 'exhibit' for us yanks, was presented at the International
Classic Motor Show at the NEC, Birmingham, England, on November 6 and 7.
Adopting the show's theme of time, their stand pictured on page 15 includes
a pristine De Lorean in a barn yard setting along side a 'barnfind' De
Lorean complete with original dust!
A hearty 'Hip Hip Hoorah' to the club across the pond!

Hi,
I was playing Resident Evil 3 for playstation and noticed that there is a
Delorean about 25% through the game. Its in an area called the GAS STATION
and has an american flag on top of it. If you are easily disturbed I don't
suggest playing much further since right after you get the oil in the gas
station the Delorean gets totally waisted.
Has anyone else seen this?

James said,
I was wondering if anyone has or uses a dash cover, (I don't know the
exact term for them). It's those cloth covers that cover the dash. I
was just wondering if anyone knew of any place or company that made one
that custom fix the Delorean dash? If so, where could I get one at and
how about how much are them? A little preventative medicine can't hurt,
my dash is 'perfect' and I just don't want any cracks or anything to
happen to it.

-------------------
In my experience the dash cover is not the way to go to save your Delorean
dash.
I have used dash covers in the past, with other cars and they work great, so
I purchased one for the Delorean when I got the car, to protect my perfect
gray dash. What I found is that the vinyl material that was used to cover
the Delorean dash must breath. Putting a dash cover on the dash will not
allow the dash to breath and results are that the dash will start to turn
colors. The gray dash will turn purple.
It was Darren Decker, vin#5000, that brought this to my attention this past
summer. He was using the carpet dash cover. I was using the light weight
velour cover with the foam backing. Though both our dashes had started to
turn purple, we were able to get rid of the purple, by actually leaving the
cars unprotected for a while in the sun, allowing the dash to get hot.
The best way to keep your dash protected, is to keep the vinyl conditioned
with something like "Formula 2001" and try to keep the sun off the dash as
much as you can. I have a custom made car cover that I used to accomplish
this. Just takes me about one minute to put it on and take it off. A plus to
this is that it will protect the whole car. I would strongly recommend the
custom car cover made of the "NOAH material by Kimberly-Clark". It is very
light weight, breathable and design for out door use. When not in use, mine
folds up nice and is kept in the truck of the car. These covers can be found
at http://store.yahoo.com/carcover/index.html

Nick Wrote:
>how could they adjust the door locks when the door wasn't installed
on the car yet? How would they possibly know what the setting would
be until it is actually on the car to test out the rod adjustments?<
Fixtures! Automobile assembly, even the DeLorean, is heavily
dependant on fixtures. Fixtures to hold subassemblies,
fixtures to hold doors on cars as you set hinges, fixtures
to mount fenders, fixtures to ... well, you get the idea.
The door was assembled, adjusted and tested on a fixture
before it ever got near a car. The tolerances in the
manufacturing process of the size of the door opening,
the thickness of the weatherstrip, the play in the hinges,
the placement of the door catches in the door frames is all
known before the first car is built. A fixture that is built
precisely to the "average" (or whatever the most likely
tolerance buildup is) can be built that is good
enough to set the lock mechanism and the door latches.
Any problems with the assembly when the door is installed on
the car can be handled by adjusting a hinge or a door catch.
This way, all the time consuming fiddly work can be done
with the door in a comfortable working position instead of
mounted on a car with the car mounted on a moving platform.
Coming up with the fixtures and the tooling are far and
away the most expensive part of any automobile. These
days, model changeovers are based more on how long the
tooling will last than anything else.

I recently started getting the lukewarm start problem, so I figured I'd start
at the usual root of these problems (being the accumulator) and work my way
up.  It never hurts to replace an 18 year old part anyway.  My questions are;
1. From the diagrams, the best I can tell is that the accumulator is located
behind the triangle shaped skid plate that is almost directly under the gas
tank. Is this right? Second; I've heard of the difficulty of changing one,
but is the task just lack of room, or is there something more difficult?
Thanks in advance!!

Today two of the UPS elves came to my door and delivered a shiney new
(refirbished) wheel from DMC Houston. I dinged up my original trying to
make a U-turn in the middle of the block at night (stupid!). Anyway,
the refirbished one is very well done and looks great under the
Christmas tree. Now if the little elves could only come and clean the
other three wheels to match! I've dealt with P.J. Grady, DMC Houston
and with Don in Garden Grove during the past year and recommend all of
them equally high in personable, quick and reasonable service. Merry
Christmas to you all! Fil Vigil.

I have no idea of the value of these items so I can't offer my opinion on
whether or not these prices are fair. But I do think that this person is
showing some dedication to this car since he's willing to part with what is
probably his most prized posessions. I think it's admirable.
Those comments (by VegasDMC) are mean, unneccessary, and unacceptable in my
opinion. He should appologize.

I was just looking at this today. What I want to do is use a Kenwood
KRC-3006 with one of their CD changers, and stick the cd canger in the
driver's side compartment.

  Quite possible answer :
Someone got there door lock adjustment sheet and wrote the date on it
.... then later when they were using that to adjust the locks they
forgot it in your door.
Or the flux capacitor malfunctionned and only your door travelled in
time....
(okay someone day to do it with all the date references)

Perhaps I don't understand what you are trying to explain either. It's
entirely conceivable to me that your door was built and the rods adjusted on
it 2 months prior to your car being released from the factory. Our assembly
department routinely assembles kits from parts made at different times,
sometimes years apart. Generally items are produced, QC'd and stockpiled for
later use in a larger assembly. What would seem weird to me, would be an
April build car that used parts built in June. I really don't think it's
much of a mystery. Probably, your door was assembled in April, QC'd in May,
and installed on the car in June.

 Ryan Bennett >>
Ryan,

I am not questioning when the door rods were adjusted on the door. But
this note I found inside the door mentions checking the window lift switch
and checking the door lights to make sure they turn on when the door opens on
the car. Is that a little more info for you? I guess this has to be one of
the many mysteries of the DeLorean Car. It is beyond me that a photocopied
paper that has written in blue ink dated April 29, 1981, that has on it the
procedure to set the door locks, to make the power locks work, make sure the
window goes up and down, make sure the electric mirrors work, and checking
the door lights are inside the door of a car that was built June of 1981.
So...what your saying, Ryan, that it is possible to check the windows, the
power locks, the door lights and the electric mirrors when the door is off
the car? Happy Holidays Everyone!!
later,
Nick

Rudy,
"trying to ignore the kids on the list."
Sorry, but you might just actually be able to learn a
thing or two about the Delorean from one of us kids.
I was seventeen when I bought my Delorean. In the
last two years I have done some mechanical work on the
car, met John Z. Delorean, and know almost every
historical aspect of the car, company, and man. I
don't consider myself someone you should ignore.

I went the same route, with the pioneer speakers in the back, and a panasonic
cd player. Although, for the fronts, I just used the craig speakers. It was
easier than trying to find the ones without protruding tweeters, and they
really sound pretty good.

At the risk of starting a flame war, I have to agree.
Apart from that one must admit that although JZD is a most admirable engineer
with great concepts, he made a few decisive business mistakes.
Firstly he overproduced a car there was only a small market for against his
colleagues recommendations thus exhausting the company's funds.
Secondly he spread the company funds too thin when he got involved with side
ventures such as the bus project. Not even large companies endeavor to develop
another product, until the first one has paid for it's own development.
He also had some pretty expensive habits, such as taking the Concorde across the
atlantic more than frequently.
In a way, I'm glad he did. If he didn't most of us probably wouldn't have been
able to have this unique and wonderful car.
Just my two cents worth,
Matt

Hello list,
Just 4 fun, I'd like to create a new page on
http://home.sol.no/~delorean/
where I will list names of some DeLoreans.
For instance, some may call their car "Gullwing One" or perhaps "Nelly"...
E-mail me privately and tell me the name you have put on your DeLorean...
Best wishes

Rudy,
Though I congratulate you on your decision to explore the possibility of
buying a DeLorean , one aspect of your post troubled me.
<CUT>Hello people, I have been observing your list for a few days now
and have
been trying to ignore the kids on the list.
As a 19 year old owner, I would assume that the "kids" you are referring
to are the many other members of the list who aren't as fortunate to own
one but are just as enthusiastic about the make and history of tha car.
Maybe you don't experience such an interest by people younger than
yourself in Porsches, I don't know, but you must realize that this car
has a very young following that will become the majority of owners soon,
so if you are going to buy one I wouldn't "ignore" other list members,
they are just as valuable.

With about 2 hours left to this DeLorean auction, the price is
$50,100.00!
The description is one of the worst I have seen for a car auction on
Ebay, and I see nothing special about this car (It was not owned by
anyone famous, it is not a prototype or Legend car).
Oh, BTW- If anyone wants to spend that much on a DeLorean, please drop

The one that I think you are talking about is the Kenwood KRC-3006. It's a
tape deck NOT a CD player, but does however have CD-changer controls so yo
ucan add a 6 or 10 disk changer.

Hey Stian and List members,
Since the subject of DeLorean names came up I just wanted to respond with the name of my car. The way that me and my friends figure out the name for the car depends on 2 things. The first thing would be to see if the car is a stick shift or automatic. Stick shift being a guy and automatic being a girl, and the second would be the first letter of the name of the car and obviously it is "D" for DeLorean. So...since my car is a stick shift I named it Dorian the DeLorean...catchy, right? Happy Holidays everyone!!

In checking into this. Go to the second page and read the bid history. Seems
ebay has a typo. The second page says it sold for $14k, If it did indeed it
did go for 50k+, will the new owner give me a call, I have a full service

FYI- Infinity makes a speaker that will fit. The tweeter does not
protrude beyond the frame. The problem is that the depth of the frame
is longer, so the studs in the dash are not long enough to mount the
speaker. I went to Home Depo and found some fasteners that I modified
to hold the speak in using the stock studs.. No modification was made
to the car or the speakers.

Yup, I just went back and checked it. It looks like the 50K bid was
retracted, and the bidders account had been removed from EBAY. The name
sounds kind of weird "dumbasskaiser", kinda like "Dumb Ass Kisser"?? So
I kinda figured it was a hoax, but what made it odd was the high
feedback rating of 143. I guess it is possible this person has so many
fake aliases that they could boost their own rating..
The thing that I dont understand is that for the price to actually be
listed at $50100, there must have been a bid at $50000. So, the whole
thing may have been a game for someone to keep the price down on the
car, although 14K is by no means a "steal" on a DeLorean of unknown
condition.
Either way.... The car did not go for 50K, Too bad..

When I first test drove my seond d the fans worked and the AC did not. I
was told that the heater and everything else worked. When I received it
the mode switch did noting at all. So I jumped the gun and rebuilt the
mode switch without checking the fuses first. I replaced the fuse, and now
when I turn the mode switch I can hear the fans go on, but no matter which
setting the switch is on the sound of the fan does not change, and it seems
to only blow in the foot wells. The temperature guage does ot seem to do
anything either. I am pretty sure that the switch it self is good, but
what is this plenum seal I heard about. I really would like to get the
defrost working. Oh and by the way I replaced the fuel accumulator and the
D starts right up perfectly anytime anywhere. My gas leak was because of a
hose that went to the accumulator was lose. Tanks for all your help, and
Merry Christmas.

Crap now We've done it! My father thinking he would be such a nice guy
decided to top off the Antifreeze in my new D. This was so nice of him
except that he added the orange antifreeze in with the blueish antifreeze
that was in there. These do not mix. If I get the system flushed by my

Even worse for the seller, the high bidder is listed as only once
actually completing a transaction. The person bids on things and doesn't
buy them. The seller is going to have to try again to sell the car.
I hate seeing DeLoreans on ebay. A DeLorean is NOT the kind of car that
should be purchased sight-unseen. I've had sellers tell me their car is
perfect but upon inspection they were anything but. Caveat-emptor.

Yeah, that's what I saw too, but did you look at the guy who had the 14000

this, so I'm kinda curious as to what it's REALLY going to go for now.

Hello everyone,
I totally agree with Dan. VegasDMC's comments, regarding
Robert Greenhaws posting about selling his Star Wars and Ninja Turtle
figures, where totally uncalled for. This may be Roberts only hope of raising
money to fund getting a DeLorean and VegasDMC shot it down in flames. Maybe a
response with some CONSTRUCTIVE critism would have been a better way to
respond. With that said, I do agree with VegasDMC when he said that perhaps
Robert should take his collection to a collector. This may be a quicker and
easier way to raise the money for his dream DeLorean and I for one wish him
the best of luck.
Thank you for your time and Merry Christmas.
Scott.

This will be my last posting until sometime in January 2001. You see, I am
parting company with my 83 DeLorean and taking up with my bicycle for the
next year. Starting January 1, 2000, I will join 245 other certifiable
loonies who are, for one full year, riding their bicycles around the world.
Yes, this one-legged 66 year old guy is going to ride on 6 continents,
through 45 countries and pedal 20,000 miles.
I have already made contact, off the list, with some of the DeLorean owners
outside the USA and hope to be able to meet them in person during my
travels. While there are no DMLers in many of the countries we will ride
through, I would love to meet as many of you as possible given my tight
schedule and preplanned route.
Should any of you want to meet, quaff a pint and talk about DeLoreans,
bicycles or things in general, send an email to <raddad@cmn.net>. My
wife will tell me of your posts and we'll see if we can meet.
The DML is a wonderful resource. Use it well and often. Isn't it amazing
how the internet has shrunk the world so that we think we know people we've
never met and who live thousands of miles away. I'm sure that in this next
year I'll come to realize that the world is a BIG place after all.
Merry Christmas to you all. May the new millenium bring you health and
happiness.

Hey everyone! This last weekend I took a road trip up to Reno to the
the Gold D that is at Harrah's car museum. I managed to get some great
shots of the car, but I don't have a color scanner. So when I get the
chance I'll head over to Kinko's to use theirs. The car is absoulutely
beautiful! Even the tail pipes and the torsion bars have even been gold
plated, along with what looks to be the lower mounting brackets for the
radiator and part of the disc brakes! I got an OK shot of the rear end
of the car, but I did managed to get some excellent shots of the
intierior (no VIN though), and that's where I discovered something very
interesting... The Gold D in Snyder, TX has a black leather w/dark gray
carpet, the Gold D in Maryland has Sadle leather w/dark gray carpet,
and the one in Reno has Sadle leather w/ Sadle carpet. Once again, this
proves that no matter what, no 2 D's are ever exactly alike! But as was
said before by others that have made the trip, the car is very dusty!
But this also brings me to something else, I have been told that there
is possibly a second DeLorean comercial, but this one is for the AMEX
Gold card promo. The add was described to me as JZD is w/one of the
Gold D's, and is holding his own Gold card, and does accually speak. If
you have any info, let me know so that I can try to get this commercial
onto the video as well. As ussual, any questions, feel free to email me.

I believe the Kenwood KRC-3006 (Shaft style tape deck with controls for a
Kenwood CD Changer) has been discontinued. I got one of the last ones from
Crutchfield about 3 or 4 months ago. And somebody posted around that time
that the Circuit City warehouse only had a few left. If you can still
locate one, it's a decent unit, but nothing spectacular. Definitely better
than stock even with the stock speakers.
I'm not finding any other shaft style head units out there with CD changer
controls anymore, although I'm sure that now that I've posted that somebody
will find one. :)
Only other alternative I know of is to cut the dash and put in a DIN
stereo. <Blatant plug alert!> Or if you don't want to cut the dash, one of
our club members has located a source who makes up a new steel bracket with
the DIN cutout so you can put the factory piece away in case you want to
take the car back to original later. You can see this and other parts our
members are offering at

and click on "Parts".

all the DMC suppliers carry replacement speakers, so you could go stock with
them, at reasonable prices. Or you could do a small amount of research and
get replacements, like the backs I know Pioneer makes 4x10s, but I'm not real
sure what the fronts would be.

I'm sorry you don't like to see Deloreans on E-Bay, since that's where I got
mine.
I agree that it's tough to buy something like a car sight-unseen, but what
other choice do we have? There is no way that I was going to be able to buy
one of these cars without it being distant, and it wasn't really
cost-effective to make the trip to check out each candidate. Besides, when
I bought my D, I knew that I couldn't tell the difference between a lemon
and a cream puff. So I paid my money and took my chances. (I know better
now, as an owner and a reader of this list.)

Hell, yes! All of those were controlled through a wiring harness, such
as THE ONE ON THE CAR. Isn't it conceivable that the factory would check
the entire door's functioning before it was installed on the car???
Routine QC (that's quality control, for those of you that don't even

Hi Robert!
I saw the 24k gold DeLorean in Reno too in August, and it really is
beautiful! It's well worth a look. I took some pics of it, and only
recently put them on my site
http://homepage.eircom.net/~johndore
The quality of the pics isn't great, but you can still make out the big
smile on my face!
Merry Christmas everyone,

This is not exactly true. The EBay rules do allow a buyer to back-out of a
transaction if the description was inaccurate or misleading, and in most
cases involving such significant amounts of money the buy would go examine
the Delorean in person before closing the deal with any money.
This is exactly how I purchased my Delorean, and I am quite happy with the
arrangement (and got a good deal, too:).
