_______________________________________________________
Charles Muffley Award for Engineering Excellence
General Definition
Awarded to the De Lorean present at the Eastern Regional Run that displays brilliance in modifications.
Jury
The judges for this award are the following current officers of De Lorean Midatlantic: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Activities Director, Past President(s), Newsletter Editor. The President or his/her designate from among these officers shall serve as the Chair Person of the Jury.
Terms of Competition
The members of the Jury make their selection from the De Loreans shown at the Eastern Regional Run. Each member of the Jury nominates one De Lorean for this award. The decision of each member is final; that is, it is not appealable to anyone. Nominations must be made to the Chair Person of the Jury by the deadline set by the Chair Person. The De Lorean that receives the most nominations shall receive the award. In the event of a tie in nominations, the Chair Person shall select the award recipient from among the tied nominations. The decision of the Chair is final.
Subjectivity
Each member of the jury is making a judgment about the De Lorean that s/he believes deserves this award. Only the absence of the De Lorean from the Eastern Regional Run disqualifies a nomination. Except for this disqualification, every nomination shall be honored.
This is a fun award. It is expressive of an owner's inquisitiveness and inventiveness. It demonstrates your appreciation of the tinkering instinct in many an owner. Go with the excitement and wonder of the moment when you first catch site of these characteristics in a De Lorean. Keep it fun!

Dave, keep up the good work and keep us posted on the status of images (still or webcam) of your project! Your experiences really are typical of how these types of projects actually go and can be a great asset to someone considering a similar project.

Lee,
I don't know if this will help with your angle drive problems or not, but here's how I solved problems with mine.
When I first bought my Delorean, new, untitled from a dealer in 1985 the angle drive was not working. I examined the drive and could see someone had tried to "repair" it already. Where the squared end of the speedometer cable fits into the plastic cap the fit was sloppy and short pieces of wire were jammed in around the squared end in an attempt to make a snug fit. I pulled the wire pieces out and cut a piece of brass tubing (from a hobby shop) to the same length as the hole in the cap is deep. I squared the brass tubing using the squared end of the cable as a guide. I then heated the squared tubing with a propane torch and forced it into the plastic cap. When the brass tubing cooled it was secure in the plastic cap and the cable end fit inside the brass tubing snugly.
Being an old motorcycle rider, I know the importance of proper cable lubrication. I removed both lengths of the speedometer cable, cleaned them and gave them a liberal coating of motorcycle cable lube.
That was fifteen years ago. I can't remember lubing them since and everything has continued to function fine. The cable lube not only lubricates but also displaces water. My guess is that's what has saved me from the problems I hear others on the list talking about re: angle drive failure. I hope this helps.

Time to clean out the garage/basement/garden shed/trunk! Tired of dealing with Online Auctions? Want to try the old fashioned "put and ad in the paper and see who calls" routine?
I'll probably regret this, but at the suggestion of list members, I've re-activated the DeLorean Parts for sale and DeLorean Cars and Parts wanted sections of the www.dmcnews.com web site. Hit the BuyN'Sell link to get there. Make sure you hit "refresh" if you go there often. This is not an automated system, like the car for sale section it is manual, so allow time for the postings to go up. Sometimes it will be quick, sometimes not, kind of depends on my real job. Also, like the car section, obviously frivolous posts will be tossed. I encourage you to post a phone number if you're really serious about selling your stuff, and if you are looking for items be reasonable on price. If this fills up full of "looking for $5000 DeLorean in perfect condition, with financing" ads, this won't last long. And you'll be inviting a lot of dumb email responses.
Ads will be posted for 60 days, or until you tell me to pull it. No commercial posting, you guys all have your own websites and they are already linked from the main page.

Jonathon, I don't know where you are getting your lights, but there is a Chrysler part that is a drop-in. It has a chrome housing, but a shot of Krylon will fix that. I don't recall the price, but it doesn't seem like it was too much. Ask for part #T1349760.
Don't let anybody discourage your do-it-yourself efforts. If it wasn't for that we wouldn't have parts like my water pump pulleys or steering column bushings, replacement window motor assemblies, shift boots, 3 row metal tank radiators, door struts, or any of Grady's great Zilla stuff. We would be stuck with some original factory parts that are either poorly designed or not available at all. Let's all hope some owners have the ingenuity to develop improvements and share them with the rest of us. At least this way we have choices. For example, I can provide a cheap fix for the infamous fan fail relay problem. But others will opt for the more expensive but drop-in and guaranteed Zilla fix with its advantages. There will always be a market for both, as well as for the absolutely original parts. And as noted in the earlier response, even DMC Houston doesn't market just original pieces.....

Hi Burk,
I found that so far all the replacement cables are packed with 17 year old grease
which if not cleaned out completely and re lubricated (I use the lithium cable grease) the cable has so much resistance to turning that it tears out the square hole in the speedo cap. I also discovered that with out the coat hanger bracket that fits in the break mount bracket of the front left wheel, things like pot holes can shear the angle drives in a single hit. And of course the dry speedo cable while it wont break from use, it will rust out because the angle drive cable end is not water proof and there is a natural low spot in the cable it's self which fills with water.
With the completion of the Angle drive boot I think that all the general problems with the drive, save the new steel gear replacements from PJ Grady, will be solved. I will see about posting some photos next year....

It is very easy to distinguish between the two types of pumps. Referring to= 2 / 1 / 0 fig 51 in the parts manual, the early type pump uses a flat top = banjo screw while the later external valve pump uses a domed banjo nut.

Now that I think about it though, does anyone know the Bosch part number of the fuel pumps with the defective check valve? I'd like to check mine before reinstalling it. Actually, I may just replace it. It doesn't seem to do anything but 'hum' when I give it 12 volts of juice. Shouldn't I be able to feel a little suction on the intake side? It has been sitting dry for 10 years. I suppose I should soak it for a few days in fresh gasoline to see if it breaks free. But if it's one of the ones with the bad check valve, I should just order a new one and skip the frustration.

Your noise is probably caused by a defective left front wheel bearing.

I've seen several requests for information on how to remove the paint on DeLoreans. I contacted a local supplier of automotive paint and was advised that a product called Pyrox is what should be used as it also removes the primer coat and will not etch or otherwise damage the stainless panels.
Hope this helps.

List,
If there are any members of the list that haven't made the modification to their A/C panel lights (they will be on all the time if the modification has not been done) I can send you the correct size wire with connectors along with a detailed instruction sheet for $2.50. This should cover my time, materials and shipping.
For those that are wary of home-made items, I made this modification on my first DeLorean 8 years ago and it was given the ok by Don at DeLorean Motor Center. I also made this change on my current car and it was checked out by Rob's guys this past summer when I was there for service. Installing this will make your center lights only come on when you turn on your headlights (or running lights) The center plastic piece can warp due to the lights being on all this time.
If you are interested let me know by private e-mail.

Well folks here's the deal. I got my dad's Delorean restored by DMC Joe. While his was being restored I bought another Delorean. My dad has not driven his since we got it back so he wants me to take it and drive it. We all know the only way to keep a Delorean up is to drive it. Anyway I'm selling the one I bought about 8 months ago. I took the car to DMC Joe in Atlanta to have the following work done, new fuel pump, major service kit, replace window regulator, tankzilla and I bought some new Goodyears for the car. I drive this car at least once a week. It's an 82 manual with grey interior under 9,000 miles. Here is the catch, it was painted Blue by the original dealer. That's why I'm selling this car cheap. $12,500. The interior of this car is near perfect, the only thing you'll have to do is replace the headliner. No cracks in the dash, and you won't have to replace the seat covers. If your familiar with DMC Joe, send him an e-mail and ask him how nice this car is. I drove it from Atlanta to Nashville and it ran perfect. I drove it two days ago and it drove perfect. If you have any questions about the car, please call me. (615)837-9159 or (615)315-6992

Happy Holidays,
When I purchased my D, it did not come with the gas key, as the original owner lost it. I am concerned that I am not properly sealing the gas tank. Is a replacement available from another vehicle? I am not opposed to another locking cap, but I don't think it is necessary, and a non-locking one would do fine.
Any thoughts are appreciated. >Ross '81- vin911

My muffler is brown-spotted and looks rusty...is it prone to rust? I thought this was also made from stainless steel...
The two tailpipes have definitely rusted...and one is loose and about to come off.
Does the entire muffler need to be replaced or can I simply get tailpipes?
Anyone?

Hey everyone,
I did my usual curiosity check to see what delorean.com was up to & was taken to DMC Houston's web site. Did I miss something? What happened to the "DMC2"?
Thanks, mATT
