CRAIG RADIO FEATURES

At Kapac I picked up a new Craig radio/cassette unit, but it
looks nothing like my old Craig radio/cassette unit. My
original radio has a built-in digital clock, even though my car
also has the center consol clock.

My old radio has *no* station preset buttons. The Kapac
radios all have presets.

I used to think the only radios in DeLoreans were Craigs (like
mine) and ASIs. Now it seems that my original radio is
some kind of odd-ball. Does anyone else have the Craig
radio/cassette with a clock and no presets?

Marc asked (about the Kapac tour):

>Yea, Why did'nt I get invited?!

Marc, I have been told that word was sent to the DOA to
please mention the Kapac tour on the event calendar in
DeLorean World. Unfortunately the issue featuring the tour
would not be out until the tour was over. Kapac also
advertised it on their web page, but no one knew the page
existed until Marvin Katz showed it off on Saturday.

Based on the turnout, which looked to me like three times as
many people as they got last year, I would say the word
spread pretty well. I don't know for sure, but I have assumed
that Kapac wasn't ready to accommodate too many more
people this time. After all, it is a very big warehouse with
just a few employees to watch as the tour guests poke, prod
and grope millions of dollars worth of their inventory. I expect
that they would need to make extensive preparations to
handle an onslaught of hundreds of people.

Now that Kapac advertises on the web, I think they can
expect hundreds of us to make the pilgrimage for every tour
they give in the future. Next time they can be ready for the
hordes!

I believe the weekly specials that Kapac has promised to put
on the web page will be just like the "one day specials" they
offered at the tour. My advice is to check their page
frequently (www.deloreanparts.com).

The big advantage of making the trip to Ohio is the
experience. In James' words:

>". . . I was quite literally left speechless upon entering the
>warehouse. Forty thousand square feet stacked from floor
>to ceiling with nothing but DeLorean parts."

This sight is really encouraging to anyone who was worried
that DeLorean parts are running out.

BTW Jane at Kapac told me that she is a lurker at the DML
(hi Jane!). Kapac is aware of us. I deduce that they could
have announced it here if they thought they could handle any
more guests this time. Check their web page for future
announcements.

> regarding the broken hood latch cable problem.

If you are unable to flex the hood to reach the release, There is one other
more dramatic solution. I am not recommending this, but it is possible.

The release cable is extremely similar to a bicycle brake cable. In fact, I
replaced my inner cable with a mountain bike cable, which is stonger.
You could conceivably crawl under the dash, carefully cut the outer housing
of the cable to expose the inner line. Yank the inner cable and open the
trunk.
You would then have to replace the entire cable (inner and outer), however,
I believe that a bicycle cable would work well here also. I do not believe
that
the cable is like the engine compartment release which is apparently more
difficult to replace just the inner cable.

Good luck

Subject: Results from dcleaning injectors & Renault Apline GT

Another brief update on the DMC-12 restoration.

What do you say after you have cleaned your injectors?" WOW!!! I
should have done that sooner! I am really astonished at the improvement in
performance and idle. My local Bosch service center did not have an adapter
for his injector cleaner that would attach the 8mmx 1.0 threads of the
K-Jetronic injector used on the DMC-12.

READ CAUTIONS BELOW! Therefore, I assembled an injector
tester/cleaner by threading an 8mmn x 1.0 mm male end of a 1/4" pipe by
1/4" copper tubing fitting. This fitting was attached to one DMC-12
injector and tested. This modified fitting was screwed into one end of a
shut off valve that was attached to a small 1" x 6" long filter dryer
cylinder used to dry compressed air; the dryer tube had a top fitting that
screwed off to allow fluid to be added inside the tube. The second valve
was attached to a quick disconnect air fitting. The dryer originally
contained a molecular seive that was emptied out before the assembly.

The top end of the dryer tube was attached to a 1/4" pipe "tee"
along with a 100psi gage and another shut off valve. After shutting off
the valves, the filter body is opened and a small amount of injector
cleaner (about 25mL or 1 ounce) is put into the filter body. Then the top
filter fitting is reattached and tightened. After putting the injector on
the threaded fitting and attaching the air hose with 80psi set on the air
regulator to the top shut off valve, the fluid in the filter is pressurized
by opening the top valve (keeping the filter vertical) and then the top
valve is shut off leaving the fluid pressurized as shown by pressure
reading on the gage. Next the bottom valve is opened and the spray pattern
is readily seen; also the injector should shut off the liquid flow or air
flow (if all of the liquid flows through the injector) at about 50-55psi.
After two rinses, the spray pattern became very even and the pressure
observed after shut off by the injector increased from about 20-30psi to
50psi. !!!!CLEANING THE INJECTORS MUST NOT BE DONE OUTSIDE OR IN A WELL
VENTILLATED OPEN AREA. DO NOT DO THIS IN A CLOSED SPACE OR ANYWHERE NEAR
AN OPEN FLAME OR WHERE A SPARK MAY EXIST BECAUSE THE CLEANER MAKES A HECK
OF A FOG FOR A SHORT TIME AND THE FOG IS FLAMMABLE!!!!!

I am also seraching for historical info on the PRV6 engine and the
drive train integrated into the DeLorean from the Renault Apline (A310 or
GT). I found an introdution at the following page
"http://proffa.cc.tut.fi/~m139896/homepage.html" and the following text
comes directly from that address.

  RENAULT ALPINE GT (PICTURE)

The Alpine V6 GT was introduced in 1985. It was similar in construction to
earlier Alpines, consisting
of a tubular steel backbone chassis and a glassfibre body with a
back-mounted engine. The engine was
of the same design as the A310 V6's. When a turbocharger was added to the
engine (although a
downsized version), the Alpine V6 Turbo was born. The V6 Turbo had an
electronic Renix fuel
injection. For the first time in the Alpine's history ABS brakes were
offered as an option. A catalytic
converter was also introduced, mainly to the German market.

In 1987 Renault was still a part owner of the American Motor Company (AMC).
They wanted to take
the GTA to the American market. In order to get a homologation in the US,
some modifications had to
be made. The crash test norms were at the time a lot stricter in the US. So
the chassis had to be
strengthened by means of an additional floor section made of steel (all
glassfibre in Europe). Other US
spec modifications included e.g. catalytic converter, sidelights,
additional brake light, conventional
wind screen wipers, twin exhaust outlet and the most significant of all, a
new front end with pop-up
headlights. Unfortunately, AMC and Renault ended up in 'divorce' before the
car ever got to the new
continent. The already made 21 examples were sold very discreetly trough
small ads in French papers.

Before the end of production in 1991 a couple of special editions were
introduced. The 'Mille Miles'
(French for 'A Thousand Miles') was a limited series V6 GT with Turbo
wheels and a decorative tape
on the bonnet to commemorate the famous rallying event Mille Miglia in
Italy (1927-57). The 'Le
Mans' was another special edition. It had a specially made nose cone and
bumpers. Wide tires were
wrapped around modular three-piece BBS alloy wheels. The engine was tuned
up to 200 bhp. The
modifications were made by a German tuning company."

Any suggestion on a remaining problem? The car is difficult to start
(intermittently) after it has run for a while and the engine is still warm.

Thanks,
DaveS

I had the same problem-high readings on the oil pressure gage. Rob Grady
replaced the sender for $40 (parts and labor). I believe he used a Corvette
sender. It seems to work fine now.

With regard to Rob's work, I agree he does a superb job. As I don't "push" to
get my car back, it does seem to take some time to get everything done. The
last time I drove my car was back from his place, (date in: 7/17/93; date out

You haven't driven the car in THREE years! WOW, but I'm left wondering why
you had Rob work on it at all if it was just going to be left in the same
place for so long anyway? Just curious.

Personally, with a car like a DeLorean in my hands, I can't resist driving
it everywhere I go. But then no one has ever seriously thought of me as

Chase,
Unless you live in the New York Metro area you couldn't understand. The
D sticks out like a sore thumb and is a target for incompetent drivers.
The three injuries to my D were all caused while the car was parked, in
public areas, and me not present. No notes, not owning up to the damage.
In fact the last episode was at a supermarket lot ... it looked like
someone had tried parking next to me, creased the left rear qtr, then ,
not being satisfied managed to crease the left front and pushed the
fascia forward about an inch. This has all been repaired very nicely by
specialists in the area but now I only drive it about once a week just
to keep things lubricated and the tires round.
As for not driving it for three years I agree WOW ... the question is
will his D still start or should he even try considering the potential
damage from contaminated fuel.
Best regards,
Marv Sterling
PS. Saw a bit on ABC news one evening. The DEA was auctioning off items
seized from drug dealers etc and one was a D ... looked beautiful, the
upset price was $20,000... don't know if it was bought or not.

I remember someone asking about the installation of the windshield antenna
on the '81 DeLorean, but I don't recall responding so here it goes...

My antenna tape is attached to the inside of the windshield and does NOT
require drilling a hole in the windshield itself. Perhaps this is not true
of all of the cars with this antenna design, but it is the case on mine.

As of late, my front brakes have begun to squeal under "spirited"

Subject: Re: Squealin' brakes

As I understand it, brakes squeal when the pads vibrate back
and forth rapidly. The purpose of anti-squeal shims is to
dampen this vibration by restricting their movement. They
brace the pad in place kind of like a spring. If the anti-squeal
shims are loose, worn, or damaged they are less effective.
(Did you notice the brake squeal in my van last week,
James? This began right after I changed pads in August,
when I accidentally broke a tiny piece off of one of my
anti-squeal shims. Before that they had been silent.)

Another solution is the goopy polymer paste that some
manufacturers include with their new pads. You smear some
of this stuff on the pad before installing it on the calliper and
it hardens to a custom-fit cushion for the pad. Viola! Quiet
brakes.

There are a few exotic things that can cause brake noise
(loose rotors, rusty callipers, etc.) but I think 99% of all
squealing is caused by pad vibration.

If you are not satisfied with your anti-squeal shims you can
spend five bucks or so at the auto parts store for a tube of
that anti-squeal goop. Remove your wheels and smear some
of it under each pad (between pad and calliper, not between
pad and rotor). One tube should more than handle all four
wheels on your DeLorean. That stuff worked great on my
Trans Am, but I haven't yet bothered with my van.

Good luck.

Subject: Pantera in DeLorean Clothes, available!

Fellow readers, I have to share this experience with you.

Today, I just had one of the rides of my life! I looked at, drove and
almost bought a 1983 DeLorean with a one of a kind power plant drive train!
Only a last minute sense of fiscal reality and lack of agreement from my
spouse (whose input weighs heavily) kept it from being transported to my
already full garage. The car was purchased new, transported to Illinois
where it was disassembled and retro- engineered to accept a Pantara drive &
trans with the Cleveland 351 being blueprinted and balanced; conversion was
finished by 1986. The car had approximately 1,700miles (yes, One thousand,
seven hundred).

Itspend a short while in one of the countrty music entertainer's musuem in
Nashville. The spedometer (maxed at 170 or 185mph -- I cant remember) with
an incredibly clean fit to the regular instrument cluster and dash. The
five speed shifted flawlessly although a little stiff. The car has been
kept inside and driven periodically for the 10 years in the owner's
showroom and has no oil or leaks of any kind. The front suspension and
A-frames were replaced along with heavy duty rotors and a heavy duty
radiator was fitted. The interior is black leather seats with grey carpet
and it has the original radio. I believe the car was tested at the Indy
Speedway. All original documentation, owners manual, jacket, and
documentation on conversion records go with the car. Total expenditure for
car and conversion was in excess of $60,000.

Only the door struts were in need or replacement and it would have
benefited from having the front end alignment and tires balanced.

The car remains for sale at the moment; however, only critically serious
buyers should contact me within the next week with a request via e-mail
(If the car is sold, I will post a notice). The owner may also decide to
keep the car. I will do my best to relay your phone or fax to the owner
stating what your best offer would be; no offer below the owner's minimum
will be forwarded. I will not forward reply's to the owner after the 20th
of October, 1996

The car is immaculate and truly unusual; a Pantera in DeLorean clothing has
to be considered a rare and unusual experience for me.

Well, it hit me later that day that he couldn't do that and i rushed

I haven't heard anything of this problem from anybody, so I thought I'd

Lately, I've noticed an inconsistancy in my finish. Most of the hood of
my DeLorean has a finish comprable to the rest of the car, but the passenger
side of the hood has a dull, cloudy finish. As i say, this appeared just
recently. It appears as if someone tried to do a wax comercial on my car and
waxed one side of the hood.
This dull cloudy finish isn't limited to just the stainless, the bumper
also exibits the same. Water tends to bead on that side rather then sheet as it
does with the rest of the car.
I've tried an assortment of cleaners and even taken the time to
scotch-bright a small area of it, to no avail....
I'm out of ideas and really rather irritated as not being able to get
