One thing I find very helpfull is to slightly crack the windows when using the AC. This will allows better air movement since the car is rather tightly sealed. My system was 1.5 pounds low, so my total cost was $82.70, tax included. Since the refrigeration system is conventional R-12, it doesn't require any unusual or exotic equipment or fittings, so they were able to handle it very competently. It is either a vacuum leak or a more complicated problem, as it is on my car. If you're sure there is no vacuum leak, as I am (since I had my mode switch rebuilt), look under the pasenger side dash and you will see a plunger type mechanism which is attached to the center vents by a metal rod. This plunger is vacuum activated. The problem with my car is that when the plunger becomes activated, a little piece which attaches the inner parts of the plunger to the outer is broken. The outer part gets pulled into the inside of the plunger instead of activating the metal rod to open the center vents. It is a $45 part to replace, but the real expense is in the labor because the dashboard has to be removed in order to replace the part. What I am going to try to do instead of fixing the problem is clip the attachment of the metal rod to the plunger so that the center vents can remain open all the time. As most of you all know there is a small micro switch that triggers the idle when the accelerator is released a hammer that is connected to the linkage drops and there is a small adjustment screw wich makes contact with the micro switch causing the switch to trigger. When the engine is off, and I play with the accelerator linkage the hammer triggers the switch with no problem. when I turn the engine on, once I hit the gas and release it, the hammer does not come down hard enough to trigger the switch. I feel that the spring has worn out... I can't understand why it wont hit the switch. NO matter how much I adjust the screw the problem still exists. Thanx for listening. ATM ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Jun 1997 08:20:34 +0000 From: James Nichols Subject: Re: DML: Bosch Relay Subject: DML: AC vents There could be a couple of reasons for restricted airflow to the center vents. 1. The vents are closed. There are two thumbwheels on either side of the vents that control a flap behind them. 2. The boots from the ventilation plenum are missing. These boots duct air from the plenum to the vents. 3. The mode switch is defective. 4. The vacuum actuator for the center vent is not working, either because it is defective or a vacuum line is blocked/missing. To check these out, remove the center vent assembly. Check the operation of the flaps, look for the boots, and observe the operation of the door on the plenum as you work through the mode switch. If the door remains closed in vent or AC positions, you will need to rebuild/replace the mode switch or check out the actuator. There is a drain for AC condensation that tends to plug up with road dirt. Take a look a the service bulletin for leaks available at www.dmcnews.com. The drain is also a source of leaks into the passenger compartment. Michael A. Not me. My DeLorean's AC is more than adequate, and fairly trouble-free so far. Of course I live in Cleveland, which isn't exactly the Sahara desert. The last time I had it recharged my mechanic complimented all DeLoreans in general for how well they hold their Freon. Last summer there was a lot of discussion about those little duct boots to the center vents inside the dash. They frequently slip off, causing the cold air to blow downward in the dash instead of into the passenger compartment. This keeps your radio ice cold, but doesn't help you much. If you are one of the people who feels the AC is underpowered then you should check to see if the radio is getting all your cold air. Next time you run the AC feel the cassette door on the radio. If cold air is blowing through the door then you need to reseat one or both of those duct boots. Has anyone come up with a permanent fix for this, so the boots never slip off again? - - Mike Substelny ------------------------------ End of dmcnews-digest V2 #250 ***************************** To unsubscribe from this list, send mail to majordomo@world.std.com with the message UNSUBSCRIBE DMCNEWS-DIGEST Back issues are available at http://www.dmcnews.com/ Contact moderator@dmcnews.com if you have problems.
