From the other end of cyberspace I just want to say thanx to everyone who is
contributing to the DeLorean mailing list.
I was driving on the 405 S in LA this afternoon, when suddenly another DMC
pulled up in front of me. It's like now you see me now you don't.
Weeks you don't see any, then there's 2 behind each other on the freeway.
Anyway, where can I leave some technical questions, here??
Please let me know. I'm not exactly sure
Thanx again.
A very happy DMC owner/driver (6179)

Well, from what you've said he sounds like a tricky situation. Do you
fight fire with fire and act like a rude moron? OTOH, if you come across
to smart he'll probably be paranoid. Personally, I can't see why he
wouldn't sell it. In fact, I am confused. Since he lets the tarp rot and
a tree become one with it, then doesn't romove it after retarping, that
kind of rules out the notion he is keeping it as an investment. He doesn't
drive it, so that rules out the only other idea I can think of, unless he
got it and is keeping it under an unusual circumstance that I can't really
imagine, especially considering how it treats it.
Tell him you really like them, and are looking for a nice project car to
keep you occupied in the evening for a while. Perhaps if you show some
concern for it, without implying the truth about the way he treats it,
he'll feel compassionate towards the car and sell it to someone who
actually, uh, cares.
As far as what it is worth, it sounds like to someone who is in the know,
not very much. Maybe he thinks it is worth a lot of money by now (then
again, probably not because he's let it get so trashed), and might get
insulted at a realistic offer. It hasn't run for years, so expect serious
mechanical overhaul, plus the fact the window is gone and probably so is
the interior. Explain what would happen if you poured several buckets of
water on any dashboard (like where that water would go besides what you can
simply see, etc. etc. etc. Maybe he'll think it is time to get rid of it.
After all, it has just been sitting there for so long.
Hope that helps,
JT

I often wonder how many they went through when filming all the movies.
There are bits and pieces used in some parts of the movies that wouldn't
require trashing a car, and I assume a lot of them were just prop copies of
some sort, but still.... I remember reading TV Guide when The Dukes Of
Hazzard was a hot show (blush) and they mentioned something about having an
entire barn FULL of General Lees, AND after EACH JUMP, they scrapped the
car because of, not only insurance issues, but the reality of not wanting
to take any chances with a car that had been so abused.
Does anybody know how many DMCs were used duing the filming of the movies?
I can just imagine a group of protestors chaining themselves to a movie lot
gate chanting "Save the DeLoreans!" ;)

Possibilities:
1) Malfunctioning automatic choke. If this fails to set properly while attempting to start
in cold weather, the car will be nigh impossible to start [try a '78 Corolla with its' manual
choke misset]; the engine being in a poor state of tune will only make matters worse.
This was not a problem for you previously - i.e., when the car was garaged - because the
car was ostensibly warmer in the garage. Slamming the gas pedal to the floor forced the
automatic choke to set itself, although one or two *gentle* presses to the floor would have
been sufficient. (Be nicer to your throttle linkage!) The choke probably does not need
replacing (I don't recall the part number for it anyway) if you give the gas pedal a push to
set the choke in cold weather.
2)(remote) Insufficient oil circulation. As you well know, oil becomes thicker and less
viscous at low temperatures. In the prevailing cold, there may have been too much
friction for your engine to maintain sustained internal combustion. Warmer ambient
temperatures - i.e., your garage - or block heating would have cancelled out this problem.
3) Frozen fuel line. At 13 degrees above zero, the gas should have been fluid enough -
even with water added - to get to the engine. However...
4) Fuel system, especially check valves. There may not have been gas in the line to
begin with, necessitating several cranks to get sufficient gas to the engine to start.
However, you would have had starting problems in warmer weather as well.
The bright red manifold - since it happened shortly after the muffler bracket fell apart -
may have been secondary to retained hot exhaust gasses. While hot by themselves [hot
enough to fire an exhaust catalyst!], it may have made the manifold even hotter by
causing impurities on the walls of the manifold to combust.
Suggestions for the future?
1) Set the choke as detailed before.
2) If that's a power antenna, clean it with mineral spirits and reoil it with light sewing
machine oil. The air intake position was pulling dirty air over it, causing miscellaneous
crud to adhere to the mast and, consequently, enough friction to keep it up full time. If
you're lucky, you won't need to replace it.
3) Check all hoses, wires, and belts in the engine compartment for heat and/or water
damage [cracks, burns, soft spots, etc.]
4) Keep that engine in tune.
5) Sell the girlfriend's sister's family's possessions for pain and suffering costs and
park the DeLorean back in *your* garage.

Well, now that James believes he has problem with emailing the list figured
out, I'll get back into the flow of the discussion. BTW, THANKS James for
being the moderator of this list and taking care of all the day-to-day
details of it for so long!! :)
I expect to have my DeLorean up and running again in three weeks (maybe
less). I have to replace the fuel pump and am also planning on replacing
all the nearby hoses and hardware while I am at it as well as cleaning out
the gas tank. Why, because the top of my fuel pump is rusted and had liquid
around it when I checked it yesterday. Appears to be a combination of
corrision of the upper and lower seals. Anyway...
My question is does anyone know of a replacement for the front brake
rotors? I thought I read that DeLoreans used Jaguar brakes, but I have
never seen a listing for what model they used. I want to replace my factory
rotors with cross-drilled rotors but I have to know which car the rotors
were taken from before I can do that. My brakes are weak and I believe it
is because of warping of the rotors and just want to update them to a
better performance rotor.
As always, any help will be appreciated.

Here's a fun question. I was just wondering if someone happened to lock
their keys in the car, can any locksmith get you in? My next question
was about the quality of the restored cars sold by DMC in Houston, TX as
advertised on page 66 in February's duPont Registry. Do they really take
car of all the problems?
Thankyou, Jason Day

For those of you in the U.S., you probably have heard on the news that
Portland, Oregon, the state of Oregon, and the state of Washington had a
major rain storm, which caused major flood damages. Unfortunately, I am
sad to say that I was a victom of this storm.
I lost about 90% of my _ENTIRE_ DeLorean collection. All were
water-damaged. Some of the stuff lost were the following:
DeLorean World (_ALL_ issues from #1)
Hard Driving (Mint condition)
Dream Maker (Mint condition)
DeLorean, by JZD (Mint condition)
On a Clear day, you can see GM (Mint condition)
Automotive Quarterly (Mint condition)
DeLorean service manual
My last 2 copies of the Pre-delivery inspection sheet
1 verticle brochure
2 horizontal brochure
2 copies of the Original DeLorean brochure
One 4"x16" Original DeLorean brochure (rare and expensive!)
Original DeLorean service bulletin manual
Original dealer DeLorean parts-cost manual
2 large photographs
ALL DeLorean activity photographs
2 back to the future posters
1 Back to the Future trilogy book (bought in Japan)
3 DeLorean BTTF models bought in Japan (still unwrapped and in box)
Some miscellanious DMC stuff (like DeLorean One brochures, pamphlets, etc).
If anyone has any of the above to restore my collection again, I can use
all the help. Especially any of the Pre-delivery inspection sheets that I
sold earlier.
FYI, I also lost about 75% of my personal possesions (couch, entertainment
center, TV, photographs, desks, file cabinet, etc, etc.). At least these
are all replaceable. I am currently seeking help from FEMA, but don't know
if they'll consider my DMC collection as "lost possesions".
Luckily, My garage was unharmed, so my DMC is OK. HOWEVER, I seem to be
missing my keys and am currently locked out of my car. :-(
