Subject: Gas Cap & Changing Speedometer
Hello all:
I have two things this windy morning...
1) My gas cap fits vry loosely and I was wondering if it is possible to get
another locking gas cap from a local auto store, or if I need to order one
from the DeLorean specialists places? If it can be bought locally, does
anyone know of a cross reference number or car model?
2) One pet peeve of mine about the DeLorean is that was built as a luxury
sports car, but the speedometer only goes to 85 MPH. Has anyone ever taken
it out and found a matching gauge that reads in the 120-150 MPH range which
is much more suitable for a sports car? If so, I'd love to know how you did
it and where you got the new gauge.
I'd love to say my DeLorean is up and running (a week later than planned),
however, I am still trying to loosen a couple of fuel line couplings and
install new hoses before putting it all back together and testing it. Maybe
this weekend, I'll be able to test it out and report good news. I hope...
Thanks everyone!

Here it is! The first issue of the NEW DeLorean Mailing List. Odds are
the only thing you'll notice will be some cosmetic differences and a new
submission address. For the time being, I have relinquished my moderation
duties but if the "signal-to-noise" ratio drops, I'll pick them up again.

The sign you see that reveals that Hill Valley is 2 miles away was shown
when Marty was in 1955 at the site of his future home, not at the site of
the future mall. It is not revealed how far the Twin Pines Mall was from
the downtown square, but it is assumed that it is less than a ten minute
hike. In real life, the mall where those scenes is actually several hundred
miles away from the town square located at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Apparently, Doc devised a way with the remote control unit to lock the front
tires in place while reving up the rear tires. You'll notice that when the
car reaches somewhere around 50 mph in the mall parking lot, Doc throws a
switch that releases the front tires from being locked.
Hope these answers help! You've got a very good eye for details! See you
in the Future!

Is it possible to get the doorlock cylinders (I guess "re-keyed" would be the
word?) so that the ignition key will both start the ignition and unlock the
doors? How about the lockbox behind the seat? Thanks for any info.

Subject: Speaker replacement
!!!WARNING!!! The speakers located under the dash of your DeLorean are
a real pain to replace and should not be done unless you have loads of
patience or a nearby punching bag! They are 3.5" speakers and you must
get a long socket wrench to unscrew the two nuts securing the speaker to
the underside of the dash. Getting the speakers out is the easy part;
putting the new ones in is the real hassle! I wish you luck!

Subject: Pivoting front
Although I have never done this manuever in a Delorean, I have done it in
many other cars. It is very simple. Go real fast, yank on the emergency
brake, and crank the wheel...just like the Dukes of Hazzard! Because the
emergency brake only locks the rear wheels, the front are free to continue
spinning, allowing the car to spin around. Once you perfect the technique,
you can do some real cool moves!

Subject: Another Mechanic?
Wolfie,
I'd say it's not only time to look for another mechanic, but also
time to post this ones' name so we can all be forewarned. Sounds like
you've had your share of bad luck. Time for it to change. There must
be some other owners in your area who have found a mechanic that
isn't just a parts changer.
The starting problem might be a loose computer harness. Look in the
space behind the drivers seat, above the "safe", and make sure all
the plugs are tight.

My wife and son replaced both front speakers on my DeLorean (VIN 1141) about
a year and a half ago, just after I bought it. They used Boston Accoustic
3-1/2" speakers that I bought at a local stereo shop. They fit fine, but
they don't recall if they had to change the wiring plug or not. It took them
about 2-1/2 hours to do both speakers.
The speakers are held in place with two nuts each. They are accessable from
below the dash. The hardest part of the procedure is getting the nut
restarted, since the speaker magnet is strong and very near the threaded
shaft. Every time that you think you have the nut started, you hear a soft
"plink" and find the nut on the side of the speaker magnet, not on the bolt.
Access is very tight and you will be working by feel most of the time.
Though they did not remove the seats to get more maneuvering room, we have
since discovered that seat removal is very easy (4 nuts from under the car)
and would do so next time.
Special tools suggested:
Nut Driver
Wad of chewing gum
12 year old neighbor with small hands and slim arms
Enjoy!
Hank Breer
PS You DON'T want to know how to replace the rear speakers!!!!

Subject: Lo and Behold...She's ALIVE
Hello Everyone!!!! :)
I am definitely glowing today. For the first time in precisely three
months, my DeLorean has moved under it's own power. She purrs once again
and has been out running about most of the afternoon without failing to
start right up even one time. :)
I got the new fuel pump and components completely installed today, and once
I poured about five gallons of gas back into the tank and cranked it enough
times to get the air out of the lines and rebuild pressure she started
right up. I am amazed to say the least. What a thrill it was to see the car
turn heads while driving down the street for the first time since the day
after Thanksgiving.
I knew the car was going to start today, because when I went out this
morning the driver's door would not open from the outside. I figured one
more thing broken so one other thing should work. Luckily I was right.
And it turns out that the fuel and fuel tank were not the least bit
contaminated, much to my surprise. The cover seal was old and had a big
chunk sliced away. It had allowed moisture to enter and rust out the old
components, but the lower fuel boot seal held and kept the rest of it safe
and clean. The worst thing is that the fuel line couplings which hook to
the metal lines along the frame refused to come undone, so I had to splice
my new fuel hoses into the old hoses with double-ended couplers (fir tree
connectors). But everything appears to be holding. I plan to seal it all
back up tight in a few days after making sure nothing pops loose in the
meantime.
Next up on my list of a million (excuse me... 999,999) items to do to my
beauty. I am taking off all the old weatherstripping around the doors and
hood then cleaning and gluing them back to their respective places. Quite a
few of the seals are loose in a number of places, so I figured I would just
go all out and do it right the first time. Then comes the throttle recall
and fixing the speedometer/odometer. Oh yeah, and as soon as it annoys me
enough, putting new lock linkages in the driver's door and adjusting them
so it quits trying to lock itself (trust me, it is a mechanical not
electrical problem).
To say the least I am thrilled that it performed so smoothly and flawlessly
today and hope for many more days of the same. I thought everything who has
listened to my bitching, would like to hear good news from me this time.
~ Chase
P.S. BTW, for those wondering about the photos of my DeLorean I had
scanned. I still haven't been able to convert them for DOS or Windows
machines and send them across the Internet yet. When I have time, I'll try
to figure it out again. That, or maybe David Takeuchi will be able to put
them on his DeLorean Home Page whenever he has time to do so. If nothing
else, I plan for it to be at the national convention this summer and at the
Illinois getaway in June.

Subject: re: Louvres and VIN #
I purchased a DMC VIN 17065 last fall (I don't pick it up until
May... it's been a long winter). I have also been wondering about
possible differences between these cars and other series. Differences
I've noted are that I have straight exhaust pipes, whereas I've been told
that most '83's have flared, and my speedo is in kmh instead of mph. I do
have the typical black louvers though (not stainless steel as you mentioned).
I've been told by the previous (original) owner, that this was
one of the last 20 DMC's intended for the Canadian market. I have also
heard that it has a slightly higher power output (unverified) and that it
was assembled by KAPAC after DMC's demise (also unverified). I would be
very interested in finding out more about this particular series of cars,
as I find it hard to believe that they would begin an entirely new series
of cars simply because the gauges are in metric instead of imperial.
Perhaps I'll be able to get my car out to an Expo one year, and
we can compare and contrast to find any differences. By the way, does
anyone know the last 17000 series number produced? Any information about
this series would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Eric

Subject: President's Message
Having just received my copy of DeLorean World I feel a response is
in order. I do not own a "mutt" or a "mongrel". My car has several
modifications which would disqualify it for competition in a
concours, some of which are the reason I bought it. She had been
lowered, had a good stereo installed and twin turbos. I love having
the occasional Corvette run up behind me and being able to keep
it there. I have installed a third brake light ( no holes ) that
looks "factory" and certainly helps visibility. I've also installed a
'Zilla lock module, SS rear facia lettering, Floor mats, a non-stock
relay set and a good wiper delay. I enjoy driving my
DMC and like her the way she is, for now. In the future I'll have
the headliners re-done and the speedometer re-faced and calibrated.
All the things I've done with the exception of the lock module, wiper
delay and brake light were obtained from DeLorean One.
Had DMC remained in business I think all of these modifications
would have been incorporated in later models.
