Some people don't realize that at the time the DeLorean was manufactured,
it was a federal law that speedometers cold not read over 85mph, and the
55mph had to be highlighted. I'm not sure if the DeLoreans built for the
Canadian market (17000 series VIN's?) had higher speedos or not.
Most all of the DeLorean parts houses (DeLorean One, Swedish, Grady, etc)
will either recalibrate and reface your speedo or sell you a complete new
one that goes up to 170. Check the latest DeLorean World for exact
prices, but I think to recalibrate and reface your existing speedo is
about $180 and a whole new one is about $350.

Hey DeLorean brothers & sisters
Look in the February 1996 Automobile magizine on page 120.
Article on the De Lorean titled Collectable Classic:De Lorean. A positive
article on the cars, and the people who loyally belong to De Lorean
owners association. (805) 964-5296. "ask for John"
Additionally,
In response to Virginia Hodges Stainless Steel sunshade/louvre, I saw a
metal manufacturing company that produced them, in additiion to the Stainless
engine cover. They advertised in an issue of De Lorean World many years ago.
Furthermore
Whoever wants to "thrash" and "abuse" their Delorean by pulling on the
emergency brake while going really fast to do something like in
"Dukes of Hazzard" by all means be a "red neck". Just don't cry to us when
we still have a De Lorean, and yours is on the back of a wrecker, in
addition to its expensive repair bill.
Buy an Acura NSX or whatever your fancy, to drive like that but
please take care of your D. Remember there is no more DMCL in production
so our cars are something to be cherished, and lovingly cared for. Dont be
a D.(include the pun)

Subject: Re: Unpainting a DeLorean
Someone recently asked about removing the paint from a DeLorean and
returning it to it's original stainless steel finish. Yes, such a thing is
technically possible in some instance, but likely will be very expensive.
The panels would have to be removed and sent to a qualified DeLorean shop
to be resmoothed, polished and rebrushed most likely.
Paint will not adhere very well to the original brushed surface. If it was
painted properly, the stainless steel panels were sanded to remove the
brush marks and then all the outer panel surface areas were etched with
acid to give the paint a better surface with which to adhere.
Also, it is thought by many that a number of the DeLoreans which have been
painted were done to hide damage to the body panels, which were repaired
with epoxy or the like, or were repaired improperly by mechanic's not
qualified to work on stainless steel.
I pray such is not the case with my car, although, the only way to know for
sure would be to strip off all the old paint and find out. However, when I
decide I want a stainless version of my car, I plan to buy another one
rather than try to redo the panels on mine. However, that doesn't rule out
stripping mine and repainting it at some point, either, as I have always
been partial to Briths Racing Green since owning two MG Midgets.
I hope this helps.

to his friend who is my dads friend. he says it is an 83 but is not sure. the
thing is in perfect condition but hasn't been ran in a long while so i think
the engine might need to be redone along with the gas being drained. stuff
like that. He is NOT selling it but said he would to my dad or his friend if
they wanted to buy it. Anybody know about how much this thing is worth or i
should offer? My dads friend says about 13,000 but i think thats a little
much. maybe not.......Any ideas on what to do?

Well, I guess it must be because when I bought good ol' 6247 I only got one
key with it. I don't know everything about its history but i do know that one
key opens everything on the vehichle. Are they not all that way? I guess that
I just never checked with anyone else. (I thought that it was standard to
only have one key.) I don't know how you would do it or how much it will cost
but it must be possible. : )
Also, sadly : ( , due to the cost of insurance ($3,300 a year) I will have
to sell my prized possesion in the near future. It has ~65,000 miles, grey
interior (the dashboard in cracked) and may need a fuel pump down the road.
How much should I sell it for?
Just wondering!?

I have replaced the speakers in my Delorean. It is not a difficult job if
you have the right tools. What you need is a power screw driver with a long
neck bit. This item runs about ten dollars but can save you an hour easy. I
put Alpine 3 1/2 in front and pioneer 4x10's in the back. To take out the
speakers in the back you have to take out all the screws holding the
leatheret lining in front of the speaker. You must bend this back (It bends
remarkable far!) and have a friend remove the speaker. I would recommend
replacing these speakers in anybody's delorean. To put it bluntly they are
crap. What's the point in driving a exotic sports car and not be able to
listen to fresh crisp tunes?!?
- ---Also, everyone keeps talking about if the car is going to ever go up in
value. I have a theory about that. The only way the car is ever going to be
in high demand is if young people get enthused and excited about the car. I
am 20 years old and I have had my car for about a year. If Adults my age
aren't interested about the car now what makes you think they will care all
that much when they are your age. Because after all that is who is going to
buy the car. I think the Delorean Owners Association should try a little
harder to get young adults like myself more excited and interested about
Deloreans. With a little effort, someday it could be as exciting to young
people as Sting ray corvettes and 65 mustangs. Just a thought.

Subject: A veritable plethora of subjects.
I am another of those young kids who were turned onto the DeLorean by the
oh-so-delightful series, "Back To The Future" (excepting Part 3, of
course!). I'm 21 years old, and have promised myself one by the age of
thirty. I made the promise to myself during my second screening of BTTF
Part 2, and did extensive research at the local public library to learn
all I could about the car and JZD. I wanted to address a few issues:
1) All this BTTF flagging has to stop! The DeLorean time machine should
be highly modified, as it seems Doc Brown is the type to go all out on a
project such as that one. He definatly beefed up the engine,
probably made that speedo himself, and certainly did something amazing to
the suspension (it is supporting the weight of a nuclear reactor, after
all).
As for the wicked turns the car manages, keep in mind that the
pavement of the parking lot was very wet to help the slipping. When at a
good clip, the driver would've hit the parking brake while cranking the
steering wheel hard to the right, which induced the skid (Knight-Rider
trick). Whilst the car's rear end slides around, the driver hits the
brake pedal, releases the parking brake, and downshifts to make the
rear tires spin. (I've done the same thing in my father's ex-Stanza so
it works, although I was in a parking lot on fresh snow, so the first
few tries ended up in endless twirling)
2) I talked to a DMC owner this past summer, and he'd aquired a chip in
the windshield on his trip to Calgary, Alberta from here in Winnipeg,
Manitoba. Manitoba Public Insurance only charged him his $50 deductable
to replace the windshield, which cost them something like $500 to get (he
paid about $400 to license the car for the summmer - I talked to him 1
month after he bought it)! He had the Canadian version of the car, which
had the speedo in Kilometres and some sort of restrictor to limit the
car's speed. He also told me that he had Jaguar <> brakes on the
rear.
3) Chris (ausmith@pdx.oneworld.com): Sounds like your machine is one
killer monster! Any pics on the 'net yet? Many moons ago I had read that
DeLorean One was dropping the Buick Grand National turbo 6 into the car,
and wonder if anyone can verify this for me??? I read it in some magazine
from '84 or '85, so.....
4) I saw this request some months ago, but never saw a reply. Is it
possible to get a hold of the DMC emblem for the front grille anywhere?
As an enthusiast without the 15 G's for the car, I'd love to have the
emblem right now for my desk or wall. When the question was first posted,
the list only had something like 90 subscribers, so maybe somebody new
knows???
As an aside (this whole message is an aside!), I too have built the BTTF
DeLorean model, complete with hover tires and Mr. Fusion. I'm currently
working on another copy of the model, but am taking great care in
eliminating ALL the Doc Brown modifications. This is pretty tuff because
the wires that run along the side of the car are molded into the body.
But, I've been working on this for almost six months, and I have to say
its looking prety damn good! (I also have cut the driver's side door off
so that it will be open on the finished product!)
Finally, I want to thank everybody for one of the best products of the
internet that I've been able to find! Keep up the good gabbin'!!!

Chase, contact DeLorean One - they will reface and recalibrate your
speedometer to 135 mph; however, you have to send them yours for the
reconfiguration. Bye the way, when the car was produced all cars for sale
in the US were required to end at 85 mph, it was the law - stupid - but
the law anyway. Regards, Marv Sterling, vin 16000

Many people have asked about the status of the CD, and it pleases me to
no end that so many people are interested. I expect to burn my first test
CD in March, come hell or high water. Now that the bulk of my mailing
list responsibilities have been lifted, I have more time and MUCH more
inclination to spend time in front of the computer. Also, as many of you
may know, my wife decided that a divorce was in our best interest, and
while that gives me more time, it is still a major distraction.
I apologize for the delays, but I want to reiterate that I intend for
this to be a one-shot deal. No version 2.0, no updates or upgrades in the
future. This may be unrealistic, but this is a reference guide, and there
should be no changes. I want this to be as complete as humanly possible,
and as I've said before, it seems that each time I think it's done,
something else is brought to my attention that should be included. There
still lies the distinct possibility that it will turn into a double-CD,
too.
Check out the web page that I created for the CD at:

Thank you!
James
BTW, those of you that receive DeLorean World magazine can see a picture
of me in the article about the Las Vegas expo. Perhaps the rest of the

Hi all, me again...the 20 year old college guy bent on buying a delorean
as soon as he can. I have been thinking a lot about it, and the more I
think the more I worry. See, I think its cool how everybody helps
each other out fixing this problem and that...but to be honest, I am
no mechanic..Hell I have trouble changing the oil in my car! I worry
when (if?) I get this car, will I be able to work on it (I am sure that
I will have to)?. I hear you guys talking about changing brakes and
angle drives (??) and am left completely in the dark...My ajoining fear
is that without the afore mentioned knowedge, can I afford to get it
repaired...doubtful. The nearest Delorean place is in new york ( I am
in Maryland)..course, I couldnt afford it if it was next door to my house.
So I am left with this...can I learn to work on this (or any) car?
What is my question, surely you are wondering (yes we are..and dont
call me shirley)is: can anyone give me any advise to ease my mind?
I am a good learner, so I have that going for me. And I cannot live
without buying on of these cars, so I havent a choice...I am also
looking for techmical manuals, cross reference parts lists..and any
thing that will prepare and preoccupy my for the big day..the
day that I finally get to drive (or tow) my 'new' Delorean home...
the thought brings a tear of shear joy to mine eyes...
thank you for the shoulder, all!
