Subject: Back Issue News!!

As of last night, the back issues of the DeLorean Mailing List have been updated
through January 17, and should be current by the end of next week. DMC-News is
fortunate to have the services of Ian Haddock, a list member from California, as
the "Back Issue Man". A month or so ago, Ian graciously answered my call for
assistance and has stepped in to ensure that the back issues are posted in a
more timely manner.

Additionally, Ian has implemented a MUCH better system of navigating from one
"back issue" to another. At the end of each digest is a "link" to either the
"NEXT" or "PREVIOUS" issue. This has only been implemented on the 1997
editions, other plans are in the works for the 1995 and 1996 issues.

Questions, comments, and suggestions concerning the back issues should be
directed to Ian (backissues@dmcnews.com), while questions, comments and suggestions
regarding the list itself should still come to me.

A BIG, BIG THANKS to Ian for taking the time from his busy schedule to catch
up the back issues and making the committment to keep them current!!

Subject: Those wonderful folks at KAPAC (and keys)

Every time I talk to Jane, Jackie or Jerry at KAPAC, I feel a bit more
comfortable owning my DeLorean. Knowing that I can order practically any part
from them, and get some of the best technical advice as well, makes me feel
just as confident driving my DeLorean as I would if if I were driving a Honda.

I participated in concours last year with my DeLorean (a car that I **drove**
1800 miles to concours) and was met by Jackie and Jane with some last minute
parts that I needed. For those that weren't around the list then, I missed
third place by 2 points, and was only out of first by 22 points (out of a
possible 300).

In preparation for concours this fall at the DOA expo in Aspen, Colorado I
have been studying the concours rules, my judging sheets from last year, my
car and my wallet. The wonderful event hosted by Chapter 23 at KAPAC last
fall (see allowed to me to
purchase a bunch of the parts and pieces I was lacking.

Last week I called my friends at KAPAC in search of new floor carpets. Since
the colors varied among the gray interiors, they suggested I send a sample of
my carpet that they would try to match. I had been told by one of teh DeLorean
parts/service facilities that no passenger side carpets were left any longer.
I was kind of bummed since that side is the one I need the most (battery leak
before I owned the car). A few days after sending in the sample, I got a call
from KAPAC and they had found a match for the drivers side AND one for the
passenger side as well. I expect them to arrive any day now!

Jerry also took my ID# and is searching for a key for me as well from the
"stash" of pre-cut keys that they still have. In the meantime, I was able
to have a key made locally FOR MY 1982 (the one-key system). It's an ILCO
VO73 - X29 blank.

A big thanks to all the folks at KAPAC! Now if they could just update their
web pages...

Subject: Re: BRAKE LIGHT

I'm glad others have the same concerns I have about safety.

I didn't use a Corvette light. I used a Suburban light. It is low profile and
black. A strip of LEDs' in an attractive housing that matches the curve of the
louvers. I mounted mine on the second louvre right up against the center support.
It's got a couple of tits on the bottom that need to be clipped, then the whole
thing is held in place by "peel and stick velcro". You can get this stuff at your
local fabric store. I really didn't want to drill any holes and didn't have to.

The rest is as described by Dick;

>Wires run to the "grill" where the torsion bar adjustment bolts are located -
through one of the grill openings and then over to the right to feed through the
rear quarter panel and become spliced into the wiring just before it attaches to
the rear light "board".

I put a black wire loom over the wires to the "grill", from that point they're
hidden. Splice to the ground at the base of the quarter panel. Don't try to
remove the little screw, it's actually a bolt and you can't get to the nut.

If you need a part # for the light let me know and I'll try to find it. Any
big Chev. dealer should have one.

Chris

Gentlemen:

Did some research based on Dick's information. The part number for the third
brake light off of a 'vette is 59-74-609. I was quoted $164 and $159 from
local Chevy dealers. This light fits 86 thru 88 vette's. Also, it is a SOP
...but they can get it within a day.

Looks like I'll be installing one this weekend...

Thanks to all those who offered advice relating to my transmission problem
unfortunatly the problem was worse than anyone had expected. Looking under
the car at the transmission I was surprised to see a nickel size hole in the
front of the transmission casing from which the gear fluid was leaking. The
mechanic informed me that one of the bearings in the transmission had became
loose and punched a hole through the front casing. Needless to say this was
not an inexpensive fix and it seems that there is no way to prevent this from
happening. I was told by a DMC expert in my area that this was a known and
documented failure particular to the DeLorean. Has anyone else had a similar
failure with their transmission?

Talked with Ed Bernstein a couple weeks ago when your problem just occured.
He guessed that this was exactly what your problem was, if it had not been
the slave unit that had sprung a leak!
I preach the same thing time after time, use the dealers that are as far away
from you as the phone. Call D-1 or DMC when you have problems, and support them
as well and you will find in the long run that problems that you
are having can be diagnosed and solved quickly. Then you can fix that problem
with the proper part that was meant for the Delorean. Stan

>wawazat1@aone.com

Mike,
I had the same problem. My soltion was:

1. I went into my netscape directory, renamed the TRASH files something else.
2. Rename the INBOX files to TRASH
3. Went back into netscape and under the FILE pulldown, I selected EMPTY TRASH FOLDER.

This cleared the folder.

Since I also had a couple of files in the original TRASH folder that I was
not sure that I really wanted to delete, I then reversed the process of
renaming things so my original INBOX was back as INBOX and my original TRASH
was back as TRASH with the (as yet un-emptied) files.

Hope this helps,

the information I was offering for $5 on opening your doors by remote control

has been reliable so far on the cars we have done. You get both of these conversion

Dan, if the DeLorean One cars have been completely refurbished and carry a

all. And, yes, P.J. Grady also sells refurbished DeLoreans.

Waiting to see what answers you come up with. I also have a dash with cracks
from the sun. I assume that your car is in the warm and sunny area. The sun
plays he-- with the front inside of the Delorean in Ariz. The "A" posts on
both insides of the windshield also melt and deform from the sun.
What I have done to prevent that in my prime car is slightly illegal. I have
applied a sun screen film to the inside of the windshield that has a high ultra
violet screening effect to lesson the suns rays on the dash and area. I also
have purchased a mat covering (cloth - thick) for the dashboard
which is form fitting for the Delorean. They are usually obtainable at any
auto supply store, as a special order and come in different colors, the gray
matches my dash quite well.
There are companies that repair dash problems for the new car companies I have
been told. Perhaps you can call the Service Dept of one in your area and as if
they might be able to steer you in the right direction. Stan

Remember the old addage "you gets what you pay for". When a company like
Delorean One or P.J. Grady sell a "refirbished" car, they (at least Delorean
One) also include a warrantee. They certify that they have gone over the car
from top to bottom, and it is as close to origional factory specs as can be
had. That is far from true when you buy a car from an owner, Delorean or
otherwise. Usually, the owner sells it because he has abused it, and is tired
of putting money into the car to bring it back to where it should have
been in the first place. Unfortunatl\y most of our owners do not take very
good care of their cars, either by choice, or otherwise.i.e. they lack
mechanical ability to do the repairs themselves and/or they have no qualified
Delorean repair facility in thier local. Read about the guy who bought a car
and drove it 1800 miles home with the windows not working, plus other
problems. Hope he bought it cheap enough to afford the repairs to the window
lifts. Plus- plus - plus, and he was warned beforehand also! Yes, you pay
more, but truthfully, you get more!

I have heard of DeLoreans having fires for various reasons. In the past few
years my observation is that fires aren't more common in DeLoreans than other
cars of the same age.

Still, it's ALWAYS a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher in your car! Most
extinguishers fit nicely behind the cargo net.

If you are concerned that this particular DeLorean has not had some important
upgrade you should call a qualified DeLorean service center (like DeLorean One,
DMC Houston, PJ Grady, etc) and find out how much the upgrade costs. I am sure
they would be happy to give you a quote, which you can factor into the price
when you look at the car.

The first DeLorean I looked at needed a new rear wiring harness (due to severe
corrosion). I considered the price DeLorean One quoted me and it became obvious
that the car was overpriced. A few price quotes are VERY valuable when
negotiating a price for a car that needs work.
