Fromt he way you describe it, it sounds like the idle microswitch is not getting engaged. This microswitch detects when the throttle is fully disengaged and activates the idle mode on the computer. The switch is located on the throttle "pivot." Make sure the travel is good and that the switch really engages when the throttle is released. I think there is an adjustment screw on the linkage as well for engaging it. The '82 and '83 DeLoreans do have a different radio with an integrated clock. It is actually not a bad radio at all considering the era. It is an "ASI" unit and can be purchased from KAPAC (last I checked it was around $450). You may be able to find other sources for it or get a used one from chop shops. Quite a while back I remeber someone posting a message about a places that specializes in repair of the DeLorean radios -- you may want to go back through the issues of this mailing list and contact those people as they may have refurbished units for sale. I'm a recent subscriber to this list and have owned my D since '87. Hmmm, sounds like a 12-step program, doesn't it? :^) I'm looking forward to some interesting exchanges... First, a little bio: I found my D in the back row of used car lot in Dallas... with about two years worth of grime on it. Blown head gasket, no brakes, alternator, starter, clutch. Steering rack boots were torn off, but the body was never wrecked. The windows, radio and rear defrost all worked. Oh, and the tires held air. and That was the good stuff... We bartered it down to him fixing the head gasket and the brakes, and I would take the rest. Oh, and he took my $10K too. Today (and an additional $5K later..) I now drive her on a daily basis. She still needs some TLC (like a couple of new facias) but she is a blast to drive. I do my own repairs, and totally concur with the recommendations I've read for Swedish Auto. Tim (previously Bart Rogers) at Swedish is quite helpful at locating parts, new or repro, and from time to time even used. Tim as always been straight with me... (He graciously accepted a $75 hit when he mis'quoted me the price on a reconditioned front wheel.) At any rate, I'm glad to have joined up with you folks! He took it over from Ben Byrd. Ben claims to have been the 15th man hired at DMC. He he lost his job with the demise of DMC and open up shop. I believe he began retro-fitting single and twin turbos into the D's. He even designed a system using a built-up muffler and a 280Z turbo. Until the EPA came looking for him and all those catalytic converters he removed... he was doing quite well. There is supposed to be another place in Sarasota, Fla., but I have no direct experience with them. I understand that they are supposed to have a stainless steel bodyman there. If your interested, we are attempting to start up a Flordia DeLorean owners club (not DOA related). Drop me some email and I'll get you the details if your interested. Anyway, Terry is top-notch mechanic and has a lot of experience working with DeLoreans. He can occasionally acquire parts for you as well. Tell him I sent you. > Also I have my insurance through Allstate but it is terrible > expensive. Are there any cheaper companies out there? I am 20 yrs > old which doesn't help. I *had* Allstate insurance when I moved to the space coast from Dallas Texas in '89. My insurance in Fla. was actually higher on the D then it was in Dallas. (go figure.) Then they decided that I could use a stiff increase every 6-months. We eventually switched to prudential. BTW, the D is listed as my 3rd car (right after the Thunderbird SC and a '68 mustang). I believe my current rates are about $800/yr, w/ the good driver discount on the D. -- Net(AT)You.Later, - Michael D. I have just recently aquired my D, it too has many problems. Not as many as the one you bought though (I hope). I knew when I bought it that it needed a lot of TLC, but it has always been my dream car and I didn't know if I would find another one. I actually did see another one for sale at the same time that was $9,000 more than this one. I figured for that much money I could do quite a bit of repairs. As long as I can afford to keep it, (my insurance is $3,300 a year) I will. Secondly, I would be very interested in joining the FL DMC Club. Please let me know more about it. I also have not yet joined the national one, do you know how I should go about doing it? Subject: Re: throttle adjustment Sent: 01/10 12:26 AM Received: 01/10 6:10 AM From: Bruce Benson, Delornut(AT)aol.com To: dmcnews, dmcnews(AT)goodnet.com Be sure the three adjustment screws in the throttle valve ass'y are closed as they aren't used in the DeLorean. Next, while the engine is idling fast, push the micro switch under the top adjusting screw. If the idle slows down, screw the adjuster in a little more so it always trips the switch. As for adjusting the idle, I've always done it as follows: There are two adjustment screws on the throttle lever, each locked in place with a lock nut. Loosen them and unscrew rhe adjusters untill they no longer make contact. Carefully screw the lower one in untill you see the lever just start to move. Turn it about 1\2 to 3\4's turn more and lock it. Screw the top adjuster in untill you hear the idle control micro switch click. Give it 1 more turn and lock it. If the micro switch doesn't make up, the engine will idle fast. Make sure the switch makes up every time you let off the throttle. If this doesn't solve the problem look for any binding in the throttle linkage. The idle speed regulator can stick in one position and make the engine idle fast, but you say your engine can idle down if you play with the linkage so I'd guess that's not you problem. While doing some Christmas shopping at my local Toys R Us I found a "Hotwheel" type Delorean. This is identical to the ones that were produced in the 1980's (except for the wheels). I then traveled throughout my area to the various Toys R Us stores and was able to pick up a total of five cars. They are: FAST LANE DOUBLE VALUE PACK I understand they are the Toys R Us house brand car. Made in China. And they come in a double blister pack along with a Black Trans Am. I paid $.99 per pack. This is the same car that I purchased an original (1980's type) for around $25.00. Also, I am still looking for the best way to remove the oil pan from my DeLorean. Please forward any info. BTW, Does anybody know where I can purchase a new or used oil pan? Thanks For Your Time!! Den ------------------ End of DMC-News Digest #060 ***************************
