Subject: DeLorean Engine & Transmission
I have a client who says that her deceased husband had a DeLorean that
he was parting out and that there is an engine and transmission (auto)
that is for sale. She wants to know what it is worth. I drive an 81
DeLorean but I do not know how to get rid of this stuff or how much it
is worth. Any ideas would be appreciated. thanks Dean

Subject: Fan Motor characteristics
Because of poor air flow in the air conditioner of my Delorean, I
have started a debugging project and decided to measure the dml140.htmlcharacteristics
of my fan motor. The fan motor was removed (5 screws retain it in its
housing) and then using a voltmeter, mechanical tachometer, and a 12volt
battery charger (2,10, and 50 amp) I measured the speed, current draw with
and without the fan either attached to the fan switch or the battery
charger.
The no-load speed of the motor on the 10 amp current setting was
about 4000 rpm; with the fan attached and the motor grounded with the
single black wire and the flexible tang attached to the 3-wire lead the
voltage at settings 1,2,3, and 4 was 3.3v, 7.6v, 9.6v, and 11.5 v. The
voltage without the leads attached to the fan motor was 4.7v, 9.97, 11.5v,
and 12.57 respectively for fan swich settings 1,2,3, and 4. Speeds of the
fan motor with fan attached were: 700 rpm, 2100rpm, 2500rpm, and 3000rpm
for settings 1,2,3, and 4. Motor rotation was clockwise.
Speed of the fan attached to the battery charger depended upon the
current setting (2, 10 or 50 amps at 12volts [in brackets]). Motor speed
rpm and current draw (amps) were: 2500rpm @ 5amps [2]; 3000rpm @ 12amps
[10]; and 3500rpm @ 14-15amp [50]. These measurement were made with the
negative lead of the battery charger attached to the motor frame and the
postive lead attached to the flexible motor lead.
I have attached a file in HTML format (exported from Word Perfect)
showing a table summary of this information and a little more data.
My tentative conclusions from this is that the motor is doing a good job but
the vent and baffle controls are not working or are not working very well.
More on this later.
I did check with the folks at NAPA and found that the fan (one used
on many Chevrolets) matching the physical layout of the Delorian is
available in two versions cheap $20 and expensive $44. The more expensive
one runs faster and it is the one recommeded for use in vans. The cheap
one won't circulate the air to the back of the van. I hope to measure the
rpm's of the better motor with the fan from my car.
Hope this is useful to someone.

current characteristicsas measured in a 1981 Delorean with poor air
output.
DeLorean fan voltage and speeds with fan
removed from housing and attached to fan switch leads. Leads coming from
fan switch were disconnected from motor terminals and voltage present at
lead ends was measured by with a volt meter. Leads were reattached to the
fan motor and the voltage was measured while the motor was running. Motor
speeds were measured with a mechanical tachometer.

Next, the fan

to motor frame and flexible lead of fan motor and the speed of the motor
was measured using a mechanical tachometer. Current draw was determined
by
reading the current meter on the 12 volt battery charger.

Scott:
Thanks for the tip that replacing the original mode switch might solve most
of my A/C and ventilation woes. I'll have to check into it during the
next few weeks (after I take care of a few other annoying problems).
James:
Loose bulb inside a socket, huh? Doesn't surprise me with a British car.
When I took apart my centre console, I noticed that small pieces of duct
tape had been wrapped around all the little lights to illuminate the
climate controls. Probably was done at the factory. I went ahead and
removed the tap, however, and haven't had any problems (yet) with them
coming loose from their housings.
Everyone:
I went out and ordered a box of 8 X 1 1/4 inch stainless steel screws to
replace the worn out black ones that hold the ERM light assemblies in
place. I ordered a whole box and likely will have quite a few left over.
If anyone is interested in trying this out, take a look at my car during the
Nashville convention. I'll bring all that are left over in case someone
else wants to give it a whirl.

Chase,
There will be about a dozen DeLoreans coming from Northern
Ohio, at least two of us from Cleveland. Dave & Linda
Colley, who frequently win "People's Choice" awards for their
gorgeous custom DeLorean, are from nearby. Others will be
from near Akron, Youngstown, and maybe Toledo. I am
sure the Cleveland Plain Dealer, a huge newspaper, would be
interested in your story.

Subject: Help! My A/C tensioner/idler froze solid
Sneaking around under the hood the other day I noticed my A/C belt was
really loose.
Under closer examination I found that it was also baked to a crisp!
The other belts were in perfect working order.
I then found the tensioner/idler pulley (the one on the left leaning into
the car) for the A/C wouldn't turn. After I removed it to get a better look
I found that three of the ball bearings were missing and the entire assemble
had fused itself together.
Does anyone know where I can get one of these. It doesn't have to be new, it just
has to work. Michigan may be way up north but we have some wicked summer heat.
And it's not the "dry" kind of heat either. If anyone has any
information at all on
this part please contact me at my e-mail address. Blarness@aol.com
Thanks!
BTW: My alternator belt has the word "Renault" printed on it. Is this
original?

Subject: Ka-Jing! Ka-jing! From the front suspension
I think I have a potentially serious front end problem. VIN #3876, Sept 1981
Let me list the symptoms:
1. EVERY time I hit a bump of any significance I hear, Ka-jing! Ka-jing!
It's like something has come loose and goes "Ka-jing!" every time I
hit a bump.
2. About a centimeters worth of "slop" or "play" in the steering. I can
move my steering wheel back and forth as I drive without it affecting the car
movment.
I have to hold the wheel a little to the right or left to keep it
going straight. This is to compensate for the "slop" in the steering.
3. A pulsing vibration as you drive that gradually subsides (but never
really goes away until you hit 70ish) when the car is COLD.
4. A really bad pulsating vibration when you drive in the rain. Sorry
guys, I got caught in the rain between Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids the other
day. Not by choice.
5. Maybe, just maybe, but I can't tell... I think I the front wheels
feel "loose" when you raise the front end up and wiggle the tires. But they are
bolted on tight.
But, it steers and drives straight and smooth as an arrow over the 80 mph
mark.
I read in the service notes that Delorean had a recall on my VIN for the sway
bar attaching bolts and the tie rod ends. Upon examination of the tie rods and
the sway bar the car DOES have the recommended fixed on it (double nut,
locking tabs, cotter pin through the rod end, etc.). Although it does not have the
red "dot" painted in the engine compartment that was supposed to be
painted there to indicate a recall had in fact been done.
I am *very* concerned about the condition of the front end right now. It doesn't
drive or steer poorly by any means but I suspect the rattling noice and vibrations
are getting worse and I'd like to catch them before they become too
dangerous or expensive.
Thanks,

Subject: Re: A/C Idler Pulley Bearings
The A/C Adjuster Pulley Bearing Set costs $29.80 for a pair from PJ Grady
(1-516-589-6224). It is always recommended that these be replaced when the
belt is replaced so problems with them evidently aren't too uncommon. PJ
Grady sells a drive belt and bearing kits that includes the alternator and
A/C belts, A/C pulley bearings and cam cover o-ring for $42.95 plus
shipping.
My alternator belt also says Renault, but I would hope its not original
considering the car is 15 years old. Oh well, I hope to replace all the
belts before heading to Nashville anyway.
BTW, I'm would assume that DeLorean One or DMC in Houston, as well as
others, also sell these same parts.

Subject: Mode Switch Type?
I have a question about the mode switch used in the DeLorean. I have
seen a couple of these switches that activate the AC compressor when in
the Defrost position. Obviously, this helps the Defrost work better
depending on the air temp. On my DeLorean, the AC compressor does not
run while in Defrost mode.
I would like to replace my mode switch will one that will operate the AC
compressor. As I drive my car daily, I have encountered may instances
when the AC compressor would have really helped.
Anyone have any other input on this?

Subject: A/C Tension Pulley Bearing Replacement
To: C2, #3876
I replaced both bearings in my tension pulleys just last month. I don't
recall the price of the replacement bearings and pulleys from the DMC Part
Houses, but I sure it wasn't cheap.
I did find a place that sells just bearings. They had an exact match in
size, for $7.00 each. The bearings were the sealed type.
Beary Bearing is a large distributor and I'm not sure if they usually sell
one-sees and two-sees very often, but the guy at the parts counter was cool.
If you call him, mention that you're looking for the part for your Delorean.
He will probably remember me, and get a kick out of their sudden
popularityin the Delorean world.
Beary Bearing Co.
Southern Tip of Lake Michigan
Burns Harbor IN
On Rt. 12 across from Bethlehem Steel

There are other Beary Bearings thoughout the States, I'm only familiar
with these guys.
A little trick (if you haven't heard)...
Throw your bearings in your coldest freezer the night before
you plan on installing them. It shrinks the outside diameter just enough to
help.
I don't have B&B's P/N but here's a starting point.
Both the bearings that came out of my D were labeled as the following:
Peer 6202 RS
SNR 6202

Jeff Frailey
