Subject: DML: New Brake Product

A couple of months ago I made a posting to see if there was anybody else
who
would be interested in purchasing high performance cross-drilled rotors.
I
had located the manufacturer of Delorean rotors and discussed the idea
with
the person in charge of the high performance division. The idea of a
cross
drilled rotor for the Delorean appealed to him and, instead of only
making a
special order for me and the other dozen who reponded to my posting, he
decided to include the product as a regular item included in his catalog.

It took a while to complete the project as he was working on several other
projects at the same time, but about a month ago I received the
prototypes in
the mail. I installed them immediately after receiving them and have
since
put on about 200 miles on the car. They are still in the break-in period
(200-500 miles) so I haven't been really hard on them yet, but the
difference
is noticeable. Besides the beautiful look of gold anodization and cadmium
plating, I notice less brake fade and more response.

Cross-drilling is a 15%-25% upgrade from the stock solid rotors. They run
40% cooler and stop 20% better (that percentage increases in the rain). I
have combined these rotors with semi-metallic pads for extra heat
reduction,
absolutely no brake squeal, and no noticeable brake dust.

Although many owners would agree that the original rotors provide good
stopping power, what the cross-drilled version will give you that the
solid
ones won't is increased longevity due to less heat and thus less warping,
better value for the dollar, shorter breaking distances, and better
control
in the rain.

The rotors are made by Auto Specialty. The part numbers are:

Front rotors: EBR424R, EBR424L
Rear rotors: EBR451R, EBR451L
Front brake pads: Axxis metal master 23-059-01
Rear brake pads: Axxis metal master 23-009-01

Axxis metal master pads are formally Repco brand pads. I highly recommend
the pads along with the rotors to further decrease rotor temperature.

Although I have not priced them yet at my local Auto Specialty wholesaler,
the price should be around $120 per rotor and the pads should run about
$23
per axle set.

If you are interested in buying these rotors, you can call Auto Specialty
at
1-800-275-3617. Ask for Matt Weiss and tell him that you are interested
in
purchasing cross-drilled rotors for the Delorean and you would like to
know
where the nearest Auto Specialty wholesaler is located in your area. He
is
very friendly and can answer any questions you may have about the rotors.
You can also e-mail me with any questions you may have about these
rotors.

The DeLorean Sports Car uses DOT 4 fluid. "DMC 12" was
an early, pre-production name for the DeLorean that I think
was applied to several prototypes. I have no idea what sort
of fluid these prototypes used.

Brandon, in the future if you don't get prompt answers to this
type of question from me or other DML posters I suggest you
try searching the archives. The search engine is still a bit
rough, but it works. Several past discussions about brake
fluids can be found in just a few key strokes.

Mike,

I thought DMC-12 was later registered as the model since so many
beuracracies required a model name? Anyway, several people on the list
suggested Castrol GTLMA DOT 4 fluid. I hope this is right as I put it in
my brand-new brakes. Whatever you do, DON'T USE THE WRONG FLUID. My
DeLorean needed the entire braking system rebuilt from having the wrong
fluid in it from a previous owner.

Hello

I am looking for a clutch fork for an "81" I contacted DeloreanOne only
to be told the whole package will be $400. The retaining spring steel
broke at the rivet. I had it replaced at a welding shop and it broke
again. Any suggestions before I reconsider the $400.

Relay locations are in figure 31 on page M:07:02 of the Workshop
Manual. The key to this diagram is on the preceding page.

As far as I can remember, no one has ever published a
diagram of the relay compartment on the web. However,
there is a nice illustration/description of it (and a lot of other
goodies) in the DeLorean World Tech notes. This notebook
is available from the DOA, I think it's only about fifteen
bucks. You might be able to order it from their website at:
http://www.delorean-owners.org/index.html

Off the top of my head, I can't remember any of the relays
today. I think the start inhibit relay (bane of my soul!) is in
the lower left, beside the fan bypass.

When I first got my car (before I knew where to get help) I
started making my own relay diagram. Because I had the
schematic, I knew what to look for (low beam relay, high
beam relay, start inhibit relay, etc). After about twenty
minutes of pushing buttons with my left hand while my right
hand was feeling which relay clicked, I had almost all of them
mapped.

Good luck,

I am taking the liberty of fowarding the response to these questions
(which were emailed to me personally) to the list so that all the rest of
you who have the same thoughts will have an answer.

As we speak, the latest "proof" of the 'zine is coming out of my laser
printer and I intend to have it available for download by the end of the
week. A last minute article swap and the correction of MANY grammatical
errors (note to self: never have an english teacher proof the 'zine
again) caused me to miss the early June date.

The "DeLorean Owners Directory" has a new format with the next update.
This new format should make the directory more "usable" and therefore
more appealing to all. If you have already registered, please take a
moment and fill out the "update form" in the lounge. If you have NOT yet
registered, please visit the following URL and get listed!

http://www.dmcnews.com/directory.html

I appreciate all the interest from everyone in the list, the 'zine and
the web pages. BTW, the mailing list has 617 subscriptions as of this AM.
This is a new high for the list, which has been running for not quite two
years. Incidentally, according to recent correspondence I received from
the DOA, their active membership is 1567.

Subject: DML: Musty Interior

The interior of our D smells musty, no doubt from too many years of
sitting closed up in dark, humid conditions. The smell may be due to
moisture standing in the car at some point in the past, although I find
no evidence of current leakage. Anyway, can anyone recommend a product
and/or procedure that would eliminate (not cover up) the mustiness,
short of replacing the interior, which is otherwise in very good
condition.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Dear DML,
I have finally gotten my car up to par. Everything is running nice and
all I have left is the reapholstry to the ceiling carpets and the seat
covers. I remember being asked to go in on deals for seat covers... I
wish I had the money then! Now I have money and I would like to
purchase them. I have an '81 with black leather interior. I remember a
few of you guys out there could get them for me at a better price. If
anybody out there could help me I would be very greatful.

Next problem! I know the car was fast back in its day but not anymore
today!!!! I don't want to do anything drastic like pull the engine and
put in a big engine... I want to do something like turbo chargers or
SUPER CHARGER!!!! Has anybody put a super charger on their car? I want
to go fast!!!!! I want some real power!!! What do you guys suggest!
Oh and will it dramatically shorten the life of the engine???? Thank
you guys for all your help!

Subject: DML: ADMIN NOTE: Proper posting

As of late there has been a lot of improper posting to the list - most of
whic you have not seen because they have been returned to the sender with
"proper posting instructions". Here's an example:

Person A sends a post about an item they have for sale - this is fine
until...

Person B sends a post TO THE LIST making an offer or asking how much the
item is.

Please conduct personal business in private email - the other 600+
subscribers do not care that you think Person A is out of his mind for
wanting $ number of dollars for that part, or that you will offer him X
number of dollars for that item.

I think that many times this is caused by Person B being anxious and just
hittng the "REPLY:" button on their email client instead of taking the
time to type in the email address of the sender.

Anyone with questions, please feel free to contact me VIA PRIVATE EMAIL
at my address below.
