Subject: DML: Re: Brake rotors and insurance

Regarding new brake product and insurance:
Comment was made that the rotors were cadmium plated with a yellow
dichromate coating (anodizing only pertains to aluminum). Are you sure it
is cadmium plating? This has a very low coefficient of friction and
therefore would not be suitable for continuous braking. Also, cadmium is
extremely heat sensitive and will cause liquid metal embrittlement at
temperatures above 400 F. This is a potentially dangerous condition as it
promotes a delayed fracture mechanism which is total. It may last awhile
on the streets, but not under long and heave conditions. When I raced
sports cars and formula cars 1/3 the weight of the D, the temperatures of
the brakes well exceed this limit on a normal road circuit. So double
check.

I found a good home (pardon the pun) with Allstate. I am only charged $
280 per year, but I have 5 autos and my home for discounts. They also let
me discontinue collision when it is in storagr the winter months. Things
were not always so rosy. When I first purchased it in July of 84, I had a
280Z, a Lincoln Mk V and a Cadillac with no kids of driving age, yet, but
two speeding tickets courtesy of the Z. After three weeks, my wife found
some obscure agency who would float me only for the D at a rate of $ 2K.
This fit in the same genre of exotic Ferraris etc.
Not a good idea if you have any traffic violations and your brother does
not have an insurance agency. Those other "Classic Car Insurance"
agencies would place a limit on how much to drive your car and not be
flexible as to storage times and partial discontinuance of coverage. Good
Luck!

Thanks, Bill. That is ONE problem. I don't HAVE a section M:07:02 in my
Workshop Manual. I have contacted the company I purchased my Workshop
Manual from, and they are sending me a replacement manual. Now I am
starting to worry about what other information may be missing from my
manuals.

Thanks again Bill. And thank you Mike Substelny for your information.

This is a wonderfull forum for people to share things like this. I hate
to think about how long it would have taken me to figure out that I was
missing a section in the manual out on my own.

What a coincidence! The first issue of the new DMC News
'zine just came out yesterday, and lo and behold there is a
beautiful diagram of the relay compartment (I think it's on
page 21). You can download the 'zine from a link at the DML

reader, which you can also download from a link at the DML /
DMC News website. The 'zine and the Acrobat Reader are
both free.

Subject: DML: Fuel Pump Works - Inertia Switch ALERT

OK, before I get a rash of messages, let me call off the hounds here. My
DeLorean is humming right along again. And all thanks to a call to Rob
Grady and a bent paper clip. I was all ready to concede defeat this
morning and have AAA tow the car to a mechanic. I called PJ Grady just to
let Rob know that the local mechanic may be calling him for parts or tech
info. In the midst of the conversation, Rob said to jump together the
purple and black wire on the pigtail for the inertia switch and the car
would most likely come back to the living. Sure enough, after about 30
attempts the fuel lines were primed up and the engine fired up. I have a
new inertia switch on the way for a cost of $65.xx, plus 2 cents for the
paper clip.

A DMC Tech Bulletin (No. SC-060-7/82) states that the inertia
(fuel-cutoff switch) was recalled and should be replaced on all 1981
DeLoreans and about the first 1,200 DeLoreans from 1982.

There are two modes of malfunction:

A) The inertia switch can go to an open circuit condition which will
result in the fuel pump becoming inoperative.

B) In the event of a collision, the inertia switch's internal contacts
may remain closed and therefore would not interrupt fuel pump operation.

I highly recommend anyone with the following VINs to make sure their
switch has been replaced: All 1981 models - VIN 560-7199 and 1982 models
- - VIN 10001-11127.

I thought that since the switch had operated fine for 15 years that it
probably wasn't fdefective and would remain that way. I was wrong and had
the call left stranded downtown in the parking lot of Office Depot for
four days. Don't make the same mistake I did!

If you are running to high a ratio of coolant to water, I believe that
you may be causing it to boil at a lower temperature. The DeLorean runs
at 185-190 degrees anyway and water normally boils at 212, so it would
not take much of a drop in boiling threshhold to cause problems. You also
might have a coolant leak somewhere OR you temperature sensor that
activates the cooling fans needs to be replaced.

BTW, to properly bleed the DeLorean, you need to bleed it from the water
pump and the radiator at the SAME time or else air might get trapped
inside the system.

Just as an interesting warning, this weekend I was driving my
car on the 87-280 interchange in San Jose when the front "grill"
(with the DMC logo) came off and flew over my winshield and
behind my car! I was really frantic to loose part of my
DMC. I redrove the interchange 3 or 4 times before finally
seeing it on the opposite edge of the road. I was amazed and
so pleased to find it in perfect condition on the side of the
freeway. The fasteners were still in good shape, so I was
suprised it came off. I had no idea it was loose. Beware.

Well, in the first Beverly Hills Cop movie, when Eddie Murphy is getting
some
things out
of the cooler of his car trunk, and two cops follow him, a DMC is parked
behind.

Also, in the tv series Eerie Indiana, an episode featured a movie producer
owning
one and driving around all over the backlot.

And finally, a couple years back I saw an episode of 'The New Leave It To
Beaver', and
two guys pulled up in what looked like a Gold Plated DMC. Not sure
though.

Subject: DML: Lowering details

I've got an appointment in a month to have my car lowered. I've
searched the DML back issues and read the FAQ, but there are some
details regarding lowering that I can't find.

Here's what I have learned so far:
- - Move front springs to rear.
- - Cut rear springs 4" (about 3.5 - 3.75 coils), re-taper them, and put
them in front (use a cut-off wheel and not a torch).
- - Slide hose over first coil of spring to reduce rattles.
- - Use NAPA Gas Charged Deluxe HD # 94037 shocks in the front (shorter
than stock shock).
- - This gives you about 2" of lowering.

Here are my questions:
- - Is the above information correct? Is there anything else I should
know?
- - What about rear shocks? As long as they are under there, I thought
I'd get them replaced. What should I use?

Thanks!

Best? Depends on what you're looking for...OEM quality, the best that I
know of are DeLorean Motor Company (Houston) or DeLorean One (about $1500
per pair).

Best price? A month or two ago I took orders for seat covers at $600 per
pair. These are leather, same pattern and style, and I think they're
concours quality based on my experience in Nashville. The company that
is making them is still 4 sets behind so I don't want to take anymore
orders until they get caught up. I think Lincoln Nation sells a set for
$800, I do not have any contact information for him, though.

With the talk about lowering, I was curious if there is an extension or
replacement to the front air dam that would in fact extend it 2-3" lower?

When viewed from the side, the bottom edge line of the car flows nicely
from the rear to the front, but abruptly jumps up for the air dam.

Sources? Ideas? Anyone selling privately?

Rob

Fred Lockett (The DeLorean Pilot) sold something along this line a few
years back, but I don't think he is in the DMC aftermarket business
anymore.

Terri Jennings and her mate have such a "skirt" on their car. Although
they sell some aftermarket products, the air dam is not one of them.
Contact them and you might get some advice on how theirs was constructed
(1-818-334-5262). I have seen a few others but all were homemade jobs
(and
some were quite well done) and the owners, to my knowledge, are not on
the
newsgroup or the 'net.

If you do something along this line, be sure that the dam is made of
flexible, forgiving material. Otherwise, speed bumps and curbs will not
only take the air dam off, but could easily also remove the fascia to
which
it is attached.

Subject: DML: Electrical Updates-Locks

I haven't posted in a few weeks, mostly because I decided to delve into
the electrical system and make some of the modifications/updates
recommended here and in "DMCNEWS-the 'ZINE. Nice job, James, if the
list-readers haven't checked this out it's worth the download time! I'll
post the modification to the fan circuit separately in the interest of
easy indexing.
DOOR LOCKS - The problem I was having was that the passenger power
door lock wouldn't lock when the driver door was locked. To make a long
story short, I removed and rewound the toasted lock solenoid. This was
actually not very difficult (once I strung about 70 feet of magnet wire
around the garage). Total cost - about $10 for enough wire to rewind two
solenoids. To try and head this off from happening again, I installed a
couple of external relays that are controlled by the Delorean Lock
Module. The relays used are standard auto parts store items, specifically
starter relays intended for 81-89 Chrysler products. These look about
200% more robust than the dinky DMC relays inside the lock module. In the
process of figuring all of this out, I was able to generate a circuit
board component layout and schematic diagram that might come in handy for
fixing the lock module in the future. If anyone is interested in this let
me know, if there's enough interest maybe it can show up in a later issue
of the 'Zine.
