Part 2 - Cooling Fan update. The reference for this was Darryl
Tinnerstadt's document that is now published in "DMCNEWS - The 'Zine". I
decided to change this around a little more because I didn't want to
disturb the original relay sockets and wiring, and I wanted to keep the
reversed functionality of the Cooling Fan Fail light that I had
previously hooked up. That is, the light goes ON when the fans run.
Darryl mentions using P&B relays for replacing these and the other Lucas
(or Bosch) SPST relays. P&B also makes sockets for the relays (part
number VCF4-1002), and socket terminals 26A1348B (14 guage) and 26A1348C
(12 guage). These sockets will interlock with the DMC relay sockets and
look like the factory put them there. I installed two new sockets
adjacent to the green Rear Defroster relay socket. I wired them to the
old cooling fan socket and fan fail socket in the manner of the original
fan fail bypass, i.e. by plugging standard spade lugs into the sockets
and making direct connections to the 40A breaker. I now have a separate
relay for each fan, and the wiring could be put back to original by
simply unplugging everything and putting the original jumper and relay
back in.
To make the Cooling Fan light work, I made up a simple transistor
switch circuit that bridges both cooling fan power leads at the fan fail
socket. If either of the fuses feeding the fans blow, the light will not
light up. I also made the wiring change so that the fans run constantly
with the A/C on, this also provides a handy means to check the cooling
fan operation. If the "Cooling Fan (Fail)" light goes on with the A/C on,
both the fans are running, or at least getting power. With the A/C on,
the compressor still cycles but the fans run constantly.

> What are your reasonings for lowering one
I see a couple of reasons for wanting to lower a DeLorean. First,
lowering the center of gravity is an easy way to improve cornering and
handling. In addition to that, I believe the general method for lowering
a
delorean (moving front springs to back, cut 2" off of back springs for the
front) places the DeLorean at the height it was originally designed at.
DeLorean actually had to raise the car up from the prototypes to meet
USDOT bumper height standards. I feel it's more "stock", or "original",
if I
put it back the way the designors intended.

You might want to think twice about cutting springs and changing your
suspension.
I knew a guy who thought that the Delorean was engineered too lite in
the front, so he added a one inch steel plate between the front
suspension and the pan that weighed between 250 and 300 pounds. He
thought that it drove much better on the highway with the additional
weight in the front. You can bet that it changed the cornering too.
The heavy steel plate changed the stiffness of the body so that each
time someone shut the passenger door a little too hard, it cracked the
front winshield.
Its hard to re-engineer a car to improve on the design professionals.

I think the hi side is okay, but the low side pressure is to high!?
It should be 25-32psi(max. 30-37 at 130F),
also 3-5 sec is to fast in my opinion.
Is the cut-off switch in the accumulator okay?

Stainless,
I remember seeing a Delorean in Beverly Hills Cop
1 at that scene, it was hard to tell not watching it in Letterbox form,
but after a couple times of repeating the scene I too knew there is a
DMC in that movie. My question though is, can anyone name another movie
other than BTTF with a Delorean as a main mode of transportation. From
what I know there is one other movie and for anyone who wants to know:
The movie is called "Malibu Express", it is a movie from I
believe the early 80's. It is a red DMC driven by the main character
for most of the movie. It was the first time I saw a different colored
DMC. I happened to see it late in the night on Showtime a couple of
months ago. It was a murder mystery/porno (no offense to any female
readers) movie from what I recall. It also has a cheesy scene where the
DMC races a piece of junk, and losses, but as it turns out the other car
was fixed up (super-charged and stuff) and broke down after the race.
If you want to rent this film I would probably look under the adult
movies section. I hope that helps anyone wanting to see a movie with a
non-time traveling Delorean, which is red.

After several days of not being able to search the back
issues, this morning I discovered I could search better than
ever!
Apparently Aaron has been a busy guy. The old search
engine returned a few words or a paragraph; the new search
engine creates a hypertext page which gets you to the entire
issue in the archive. There you can read the entire context of
the post, which I consider very useful.
Try it out. It's kind of fun! You can get to it from the DML /
DMC News homepage at:
www.dmcnews.com
It's great that that huge volume of DeLorean information is so
much more useful now. Thanks Aaron!

ps. The DML has discussed DeLoreans in movies and on TV
before. You should be able to find a lot of that information by
searching the back issues.

Yes, Sean, the engine compartment is supposed to lock.
There should be a pull handle at the end of a cable on the
driver's side of the rear window.
My car doesn't have this either. Perhaps the entire system
was removed by a previous owner, but it looks more like it
was never installed. Either way, it has been a very minor
concern to me and I don't plan to do anything about it.

Yes, there is another DMC movie for anyone who wants to know. I
sent a letter a few days ago about it, but it was never posted so I am
going to write it again:
A few months back I was watching Showtime at
around midnight, and then this movie called "Malibu Express" came on.
It is rated R for adult contents. The movie was made in I believe the
early 80's. For 3/4 of the movie the main character uses a DMC for his
main mode of transportation. I'm not sure about the specifics of the
car other than that it was a red DMC- the first time I saw another
colored Delorean. It looked pretty cool, although I like the original
stainless steel. The movie is some sort of murder mystery I believe,
hard to remember. There are also some other nice cars in the movie, I
think there were also Ferraris and such, but can't exactly remember.
There was one scene that I didn't like though. The main character races
his Delorean against some junk car, and he losses, but as it turns out
the opponent did stuff to his car like supercharge and add nitros and
stuff. After the race the opponents car breaks down though. Anyways, I
have been checking the TV Guide for this movie to come on again, but
there has been nothing. It can probably be rented, but I never
checked. Again, it is called "Malibu Express" and it is mainly for the
adult audience. I hope that helps.

Since the engine compartment plate release and "boot" release are
accessable only from the interior I guess that "they" figured that
locking the car would be sufficient protection against entry into these
areas.

On the subject of different colored DMC's, how does a DMC come to be
of a
different color? Were they produced from the factory in various colors or
is
this a cutomizing issue? Someone in my hometown (eons ago) had a red
Delorean and they bragged about it's uniqueness. I thought the stainless
steel body WAS unique!
I'm a novice to DMC's and am curious.
Thanks!

Re: Lower front
This will also tie in with the individual who asked last week about info
regarding making his car go fast. Lowering the front by 2" will increase
your ground effect by having more downforce on the front which is light
to begin with. The underside of our vehicles are flat. Running into
tripple digit speeds in the normal configuration will create an air foil
and the car is a wing because of the differing air pressures, especially
if there is a slight rise or crest in the road. The lower front will
decrease your top speed but increase road stability and give more
consistent tire wear. I lowered mine in '85 and have no regrets. Value
reduction? I wouldn't believe so because if the new purchaser wanted to
reconvert, it is not permanent and is easy if you keep a set of springs.
I bought a new set and had them altered so I do have the originals. This
is a MUST if you want to go fast with any control.
Turbos are expensive and you may wish to save the PRV by pulling it and
replacing it with a small block aluminum V-8. (besides, turbos are much
better with intercoolers-my next project)
If you go with the big engine, the brakes need to be beefed to be able to
stop the vehicle. Larger rotors and two sets of disc brakes per rotor,
just like the race cars. If you do race, then the rotors need to be
ventillated and ducted. Speed is not cheap, but you must be aware of all
cause-effect aspects before you indiscriminently bolt on new power, don't
forget the tranny, drive shaft, cam, pistons and main connectors. Best of
luck.
