Subject: DML: Midwest Fall Convention Update

After much consideration and input from others, I have decided against

holding a fall convention for DeLorean enthusiasts here in Missouri (or

anywhere else). This in no way means there was not sufficient interest in

such an event.

I received what amounts to a double promotion at work earlier this month

(meaning doing the job of two people for only slightly more money than a

got before along with a LOT more responsibility). Since then I have been

doing nothing but work day and night, with only a few precious minutes a

day to spend on keeping up with the DML. The coming fall and early winter

will most likely prove to be very hectic at work as we make a lot of

chances to the fairly-new company's way of doing business. With that in

mind, I have come to realize that organizing a car event for this fall is

impossible.

However, I will consider being the lead man on organizing one for late

spring/early summer. Anyone interested in being involved with putting the

event together, is invited to send apply for active duty via email.

Thank you!

DeLorean One used to make and sell R/C bodies. I do not know if they

still do, but last month when I was in Houston and stopped at DeLorean

Motor Company (formerly a partner with Ed in DeLorean One), I saw a R/C

car body at their shop.

You lose 10% of the engine power with the A/C running.

I notice this loss of power, too.

When this humming/growling sound comes from the A/C compressor in the

It could be to much freon, not enugh oil or something else :-).

The same thing happened to me the day before I drove to the

Nashville Expo. It was a simple problem, but it took a little

brain power to locate. I had just bled the water pump, which

required me to remove the rain shield above the throttle

linkage. It turns out that when I replaced the rain shield I

didn't tighten the bolt enough, which lead to an small but

noisy vacuum leak. Once I found it I cured the noise in about

ten seconds.

You can find the source of the offending sound using a

stethoscope, or do as I did and use a siphon hose.

With the engine running, you put one end of the siphon hose

against your ear and touch the other end to part of the

engine. Then move the hose around, and you will easily

detect when you are getting closer to the sound. You will

probably find the problem in less than two minutes.

Subject: DML: Midwest Fall Convention Alternative?

Sorry to hear that the Fall convention is not going to work

out.

As far as a convention next Spring goes, someone here in

Ohio is already putting together a DeLorean mini-convention

for June 12-14, 1998 in Cincinnatti. I cannot make very many

promises (since I do not yet know the organizer very well) but

he is *very* dedicated to this project.

His plan is to have an event centered around the DeLorean

automobile, with a Concourse as the main attraction. He

sent me an E-mail last week claiming that he already has

first class tech seminars and Concourse judges lined up (I

cannot confirm this part). He has the Cincinnatti History

Museum reserved as a setting for the Concourse & other

events, and a nearby Hotel reserved for the weekend.

Tonight I will ask the organizer's permission to copy that

message (and his name) to the DML. Hopefully you will all

see the details in a day or two.

Currently in Ohio, we former DOA Chapter 23 members do

not have an official "club" to speak of, so at this point I can

claim no personal credit for setting up this event. I would like

to say that the event is not intended to compete with the

DOA Expo, but since it isn't my event I cannot make any

claims. The organizer said he is only doing it because he

wants to go to a good Concourse and this year's DOA Expo

is not offering one. So this mini-convention may be a

one-time-only deal.

No matter what happens, I do plan on attending in June, and

I would like to visit with a lot of my DML friends there.

Theoretically, this mini-convention can succeed with fewer

attendees (while charging much lower prices) than the DOA

Expo, and the organizer claims he already has almost

enough people lined up to make it work. Since it is a

weekend event people within driving distance can attend

without taking any vacation days from work.

Chase, you and I should discuss this away from the DML. If

Cincinatti is close enough for you, and if some of the

Midwest Connection people will show up then that probably

puts him over the top.

In a couple of weeks the Ohio group is getting together to

hammer out our formal relationship, which will help us to

decide if this will become a group event or if it will remain the

quest of one man. I have some experience arranging

(professional society) conventions, and if we do this as a

group I can assure a fun and well-organized event.

Does anyone have any comments or advice? I assume this

will not be the first such event held outside the DOA . . . am I

wrong? Other marques have lots of events all over the

country, right?

And perhaps the most important question: Since we are no

longer "Chapters" of the DOA, do you think DeLorean World

will still publish articles about how much fun we have at

these local events?

In regards to the second comment/question I would hope that

All DeLoreans were made with tilt / telescopic steering

wheels as standard equipment. Instead of tilting right at the

edge of the dashboard (as a lot of those early 80s cars had)

the DeLorean wheel tilts deep under the dashboard, with a

joint down closer to the brake pedal. Both tilt and telescope

features are locked in place by a single control on the

For those asking questions about bleeding the coolant system, the

Issued 10/18/82

CATEGORY: TECHNICAL

Because the De Lorean is equipped with an aluminum engine, it is

extremely important that the engine's cooling system be absolutely free

of any air. If the cooling system is opened for service or any other

reason or after a leak has been repaired THE SYSTEM MUST BE BLED.

Bleeding Procedure:

1) Fill the coolant reservoir tank with fresh 50/50 coolant

mixture.

NOTE: The coolant level must not fall below the

(MIN.) level indicated an the reservoir tank during the bleeding

procedure to avoid air from being drawn into the system.

2) Attach a suitable length of hose to the bleed screw

Located on the thermostat housing. Route this hose

clear of all belts and pulleys and place the other end

into a container holding coolant mixture. The hose

must remain in the coolant during the bleeding.

3) Start and run the engine until normal operating temperature is

reached.

Thermostat starts to open at 185=B0F

Thermostat full open at 212=B0F

4) While running the engine between 1500-2000 RPM, open

the bleed screw to allow the trapped air to escape.

Close the bleed screw. Because of the low pressures

and remote location of the radiator in this system,

this step must be repeated until all air pockets are

Subject: DML: My hassle with the DOA

It seems that the recent postings about the DOA have struck a chord. Like

Dick, I've gotten a few "attaboys". I should say in all fairness that I

also got this:

>What is the hassle between you and DOA? Aren't we all in this thing together?

For the record, I have no quarrel with the DOA - I think it is a fine

concept. The reality, however, leaves a bit to be desired, IMO. I think

that I

have the right to believe this after having been a member on and off over

the last 12 years (#1035, #2580 and currently #4718). In addition to

having been "just a member", I served on the DOA board of directors for

18 months until a particular longtime member of the board made statements

at an offical board meeting that a certain member (and at that time,

chapter coordinator) was a "wuss" and that this person and other members

of the DOA that thought like this member did not know "shit from

shinola". In hindsight, I should've made a stand right then. The fact

that none of the 20-some other board members did not either made me

believe that this was the "norm" and caused me to re-think my affiliation

with the board.

I do not know how long you have been associated with the DOA, but there

were some similar serious accusations against this same board member that

caused the DOA to spend over a thousand dollars of the DOA treasury to

defend itself against. In a case of "might does not necessarily make

right", the accusing member was summarily booted from the organization.

In my opinion, the DOA has some archaic policies in the form of the

by-laws

that with the current makeup of the board, make it extremely difficult to

change. It's these same rules that make it very difficult to change the

makeup of the board as well. A "Catch-22", if you will.

As to your question about us being "all in this thing together", of

course we are. That is precisely why I offer everything (with the

exception of the posters and possibly, calendars) completely free to

anyone who is

interested. Why isn't the DOA making an owners directory? Why don't they

offer meaningful technical articles? I could go on, but I think you get

the idea.

I would love to discuss this with you (or anyone), if you like. Please

email me

with a good time to call you and your number and I will be more than

happy to phone you.
