Can someone give me the diode cross-reference numbers for the one and three amp diodes used in the DeLoreans.
I know standard diode numbers look like 1N0005 or something similiar.
Thanks Dave

John,
Unfortunately you will not be able to mount a amp(s) under the seat but you could mount them in the locking storage compartment behind the driver's side seat. I've got Alpine sponsorship and they designed the system for my '81 D. I have 2 Alpine amps mounted in this storage space separated by a shelf and am using 2 computer cooling fans to help with the added heat. In the rear storage shelf I have a box with 2 Alpine 10 inch woofers and my CD shuttle is mounted on the front of the box. They put a plug in for easy removal so in case I need to get to the fuse box its easy to put in and take out. It's a perfect fit. You can see some pics on my web page but the EQ is old and has been replaced by a digital audio processor w/ graphic display (really cool item) I'll be updating the page w/ new pics soon. See if you can get Alpine sponsorship (or whatever brand is your favorite) and you can save a FORTUNE!!! All they ask is for you to go to certain car shows (just in your area) and display their equipment. Every time a new product comes out, (e.q., CD shuttle, tape deck, amps, speakers, ect) you can update your equipment any time you want. For me its great because there's just one car show that Alpine requires me to go to, and to attract buyers, Alpine has a Lamborghini Diablo that they bring in to demo and show their equipment. It's really cool parking the DeLorean next to the Diablo.
Hope this helps,

Well the learning curve continues. As a new owner (4419) and trying to figure out what the last guy has or has not done,I need some assitance with setting the idle speed. The throttle cable is free with no hang ups and from what I can tell the updates on the unit have been done (black cover over throttle spring ,plastic cap over cable end,ect.).
While reading thru the workshop manual I found the idle adjustment screw and understand it is to be closed completly. It was open approx. 1/4 turn,I turned the screw until it bottomed out with no change in the rpm. From a cold start the idle is 900 to 1000 rpms, after 30 to 40 secounds the idle increases to 1500 rpm.Even after the engine is hot the rpm stays approx 1500 to 1600.With the engine off, when the throtle cable is moved I can hear the micro switch for low speeds click in and out. With the engine running the micro switch engaging has no effect on the rpms. This has been the only adjustment that I have made to the unit.
I've checked for vacumm leaks and have not run across any yet. This is my first experience with fuel injection and I'm really at a loss on where to start. This car has not been run since 1993.I've removed and cleaned out the fuel tank, new fuel pump, replaced the baffle system, new air filter, new fuel filter and replaced hoses I had damaged while doing this job. When fuel was added to the tank,I turned the engine over the thing started right up.The engine runs evenly with no misses and the exhaust appears to be clean (no smoke of any kind).
Is this a job I should farm out to a mechanic or is there something I can do to lower the rpm.The last owner had an unqualifed person who owned a wrench set attempt to repair the car and failed to get the thing even started.I have run across many wires disconnected or broken.I am also trying to locate a good electrical diagram of the car and would appreciate any out of print info. or places to look.
The wires from the thermal switch on the cooling system were broken off, from trying to install the fuel filter (last owner). When I direct connect these two wires (hooking them together) the radiator fans start up,and quit running in 30 seconds then restart and cycle over and over.I know the relay is in need of replacing, but which one is it?.I plan to test the thermal switch before I reconnect the wires.
The A/C does not work (may need recharged) but the vent fan operates fine in all four speeds. The fan will not work in defrost or any other position. After running the engine then shutting down,I can hear the vacumm motors open and close when I move the switch. The unit does not appear to be leaking,is there something eles to check with the inside fan?
Thanks

In the later model Fiero's the stock top 'o the line Delco system had a cylindrical subwoofer (like the Bazooka units) that was mounted underneath the passenger side of the dashboard and fired straight down at the floor. With the space that is available underneath the dash on the passenger side, it seems that such a system could work on the DeLorean. You could install some very clean dash mounted tweeters, solid midrange speakers in the stock locations in the rear, and then a self powered Bazooka subwoofer under the dash. I don't know if it would bounce quarters off the roof, but I think you could get some pretty solid bass response without loosing storage space or modifying the interior too much.

Well, I pretty muched summed it up in the subject...
1) I'm getting pretty low gas mileage (about 15 MPG) any ideas on where to look? My lambda light is on, should I start with the sensor?
2) When the car is in gear (automatic) I idle in the "normal" range (about 750 rpm) but when I put it in Park, I idle at about 1200 rpm.. this seems a little high, is it normal for park?
3) When I am at speeds of about 60 MPH or higher the steering wheel is just jittering so much I can't hardly control the car.. It's pretty annoying trying to pass someone with the feeling that the car is falling apart... Is there something wrong, or do Deloreans just feel like a bucket of bolts at high speeds? I believe my car was lowered by a previous owner, did they just use bunk springs?
Thanks for the help!

Hi,
I've written up some updates on the DeLorean Desktop Theme, including info on the expansion and the Mac version, dubbed DeLorean OS.
~DMC '95 Expansion 1.0: The official release date is set for Saturday, July 4th. The expansion is only 1.4 megs. It has been fully tested and works great. Download it from my page on 7/4/98. It adds lots of nice things to your desktop theme. It is manually installed and very easy to do. A READ-ME is included which is easy to follow. Those of you who contributed to the theme and thought you did not get the credit you deserved because of the missing credits screen, this expansion will make you happy.
~DeLorean '95 (Ver. 2.0??)- Yes, already there is another version of DeLorean '95 due out , nothing really new, just for those who have not downloaded the theme yet, it will be much smaller in byte size, (same quality of course) it will include the expansion(s) built right in, and a start up screen. This theme will not be available untill Fall-Winter 1998. A start-up screen for DeLorean '95 1.0 is due out very soon, will probably be included in Expansion 2.0
~DeLorean OS- The MAC version of DMC '95 will be officially under way within days, I don't think I'll update too much on this upcoming theme much more, because most of the work is going on with the volunteers putting it together, I'm only directing it this time, and I need to concentrate on my web-site more.
~DeLorean '95 Patch- A couple weeks ago, right after the release of Delorean '95 I released a patch, this patch adds the DeLorean Desktop Backgrounds , you do not need this patch if you downloaded the theme after 6/8/98, but if you do need it, then download it before 7/4/98 because it is coming down on that day.
All the downloads mentioned in this message are available at my site at http://members.tripod.com/~Phoenix007/index.html
Later,

For those of you with new batteries and decent alternators that still experience battery performance issues, I urge you to check your positive line out of your alternator. If it is still the original, it may be degraded sufficiently to not provide adequate juice to the system. My stock wire consisted of three crimped heavy gauge brown wires. Within the crimped ends, enough corrosion was going on to significantly increase the resistance of this lead, thereby resulting in dead battery syndrome. Once I replaced this with a new cable, and cleaned up my major grounding connections, my problem vanished! Hope this helps. Good luck,

I am lookine for a DMC-12 in fairly good condition. I don't care what year. I don't care if it is a Manual or Automatic Transmission. I don't care if the interior is black or grey. I want it to be the original stainless steel (no paint). I want it to have NO MAJOR BODY DAMAGE. I don't want a perfect car so I don't care if the leather is a little worn or if there are minor blemishes in the body (as long as they are not unmistakably noticable). I will pay cash up to $10,000 if I think that the car is worth it. I can pick the car up from anywhere in the Continental United States. I saw a fellow DeLorean in Palatine, IL, today, Illinois plates "D 292 711". Anyone on the list? It's weird accidently having two DeLoreans in once place together. I tried to get the driver to pull over, but he wasn't too interested, but he had a nice car, black stripe and white bumper letters. I think we actual caused quite a car accident because we were both driving together at one point and I think we caused a driver to not pay attention to the car in front of him. Three car pileup, but I was too busy trying to get his attention, that the accident may have been unrelated.

Finally something in my area of knowledge :-). There has been some talk of upgrading the stereo, and specifically on how to add more bass. I too have been thinking about this for a while and have come up with three options that don't require any modification to the vehicle and preserve cargo space.
The first is to use wedge-shaped subwoofer boxes behind the seats. These boxes are designed for standard-cab pickup trucks where the seats are all the way against the rear bulkhead, like the D, and are slanted on one side to allow the seat to recline. They simply wedge (no pun intended) into place behind the seats, and are easily removed for access to the battery and storage compartment. They can even be finished off using stock carpet so they will look like an integral part of the car. They will, however, require you to add an amp to power the speakers.
The second option is to use Bazooka Bass Tubes. They look just like their name would suggest (a long, cylindrical tube with a speaker on one end and a port on the top), and these also fit behind the seat, or, if you prefer, you can mount them on the rear package shelf. Behind the seats would probably be better, since this hides them from thieves. The best part about the Bazookas is that they're self-amplified, so you don't need a seperate amp. The way that they work is that you buy the amplified tube, and then if you feel that you need more bass, you add on a non-amplified "slave" unit to be driven off the first one. This is probably the best choice.
The final choice is to mount a device called Aura Bass Shakers under each seat. These look like little land mines and are not true subwoofers, but instead give the presence of bass by shaking the seat. They are also self- amplified.
Find a good car stereo store and have them give you a demonstration of each of these, and then decide what will work best.
Peace!
Mike

Date: Fri, 3 Jul 1998 21:01:41 EDT From: KayoOng(AT)aol.com Subject: Re: DML: stereo amps
Under the seat? Some amps will fit some will not.
Some of the problems you will encounter in choosing and installation of the amp or amps.
There will be many wires going in and coming out of the amp. Input "feed" wires are thick. Output wires are many. Wiring may get sloppy. Some amps will run "hot." Under the seat? Have a hot seat? Make sure you get a thin one in height for your under the seat installation. A couple of bounces and your rear end will be amped.
Not too many amps available with good sound and size to match, if you want to keep the Delorean's interior original without "major modifications." Amp size is equated to output. Small amp, low output. Big amp, higher output.
I have made minor modifications and changes to the amp that I have found for my purposes, without changes to the Delorean's interior.
Another important factor is to upgrade the alternator or have a good battery such as an "Optima" installed otherwise you are inviting trouble! High power amps eats up a lot of power.
Speakers choices and placement becomes a financial and engineering job. We will leave this to another time.
Sound choices? Do you like thick or thin sound? Massive overwhelming or transparent polite sound? Loud and dominating, or accurate and clean image? With sound you may like I may not. I may like it you may not. Sound is very subjective. Sound equipment and the environment -- in a car, home, studio, stage, outdoor etc., has a lot to do in reproducing the sound field and imaging.
Just another word of advise about sound. If the sound is not right to your ears, you may get "listening fatigue" from extreme high "top" end and or low "heavy" pitches. A phenomena known in psycho-acoustics, although the sound is considered good to many others.
Listening fatigue and long drives will tired you, it will put you to sleep fast behind the wheel.

As I will be converting an 81 'basket case' to a V8 I will accept bids for the motor in it.
The background on the car is that it speent 2 years in a farmers field in the Nevada desert then the boy am getting it from has just let it sit in his driveway.
I call it a 'basket case' because the interior is thrashed including the dash, the left window is broken, the rear louvers are broken, the body has been 'bondo'd in spots, etc. It is a cosmetic basket case. I do not have the car at my garage yet so I cannot say if the engine runs or not, but the spark plugs are all missing, othewise the engine looks complete.
If anyone is interested in the engine only at thipoint give me a call at 702-258-4799. If I do not use the 5 speed in my conversion, it will also become for sale.

Dave, Illumination of the Lamda warning lamp only means that the O2 sensor is due to be replaced, this should not drastically effect your gas mileage. The 02 sensor can easily be changed by any repair facility. If your idle speed is at 1200 RPM in Park or Neutral it means that your idle speed system is not operating. Finally, your Delorean should be "rock solid", no vibration right up to 126 mph. Your problem is probably tire related. The DeLorean suspension system is a performance (racing) type suspension system and must be precisely aligned. Get your car to an alignment shop that specializes in performance vehicles, ask if they can do "on the car" wheel balancing, not by computer. They will be able to diagnose and fix your "jitter" problem. Be aware that while your car is jittering your causing excessive wear to your tires. If you would like you may call me or e-mail me directly for information on how to correct your idle speed and poor mileage problem. Joe/DeLorean Services

Richard, From your description your idle speed system is not working, here's an easy test. With the ignition switch on and engine not running you should feel the idle speed motor vibrating slightly, if it isn't you may have an open or frozen motor, a bad idle speed ECU, or a wiring problem. The three brass idle speed and idle balance screws should all be closed, they are for Volvo applications only. For details go to D:05:01in your workshop manual for information on how the system operates and M:18:09 for a complete wiring diagram. The circuit breaker that is just to the left of your fuse block (black/orange wires) is for your cooling fans, it is probably an original and needs to be upgraded to a 40 amp unit. I'm a little confused about your A/C fan problem, you said "the fan will not work in defrost or any other position." What position do they operate in? For a complete schematic wiring diagram for your A/C fan see M:18:19 in your workshop manual. Joe, 3M makes several pads of different roughneses. Is "Scotchbrite" the specific name for what we need? Does it have any exact item #? Also, if the car needs to be re-grained professionally, must any of the body panals be taken off? If not, how are all other surfaces protected (if tape is used - what kind)? What is the machine used? I know that there were machines made for DMC specifically. Is this the only one that can be used? If most of the car's body needs re-grained (roughly 90%) is there a ball park price I might expect to pay? Do you or anyone know of someone doing this in the Detroit or surrounding areas? Thank you so much for your input - you are invalueable to this group. Dan vin#7065
