Date: Fri, 10 Jul 98 23:29:51 -0700 From: James Espey <espey(AT)dmcnews.com> Subject: DML: UPDATE ON DICK RYAN'S (RADDAD) BIKE RIDE
I received this update on Dick Ryan and his cross-country bike ride from his wife Leslie. For those new to the list, Dick Ryan is a longtime DML'er who is on a cross-country bike ride for charity with several hundred other bicyclists. As if doing a cross-country bike ride at age 65 wasn't daunting in istself, DIck also has an artifical leg!
Please note the bit at the bottom about emailing him for his 65th birthday - let's remind Dick that we haven't forgotten about him!!!
*********************
He just crossed the state line into Minnesota today. Minessota folks are so cool; they welcomed the Big Ride with Polka Music and signs that said Uff Da and You Betcha. The ride is approaching the 2,000 mile mark. The riders average 80 miles a day. Dick is doing really well. He has had two falls (which wounded his pride) and has discovered that he has a "50 mile butt." At this point he says it is more mental than physical to keep going. He is very determined and I have no doubt he will complete the ride. The ride ends in Washington DC on August 1st.He sounds wonderful and enthusiastic on the phone. He's had a few very rough days but all in all stays very positive. They have encountered all kinds of weather including snow and funnel clouds.
I hope everyone who can will email him a Happy Birthday wish. He will turn 65 on July 14th. The email address is bigrider(AT)gte.net and in the subject line, type Richard Ryan #1561. Email several days before the 14th as it takes several days for delivery. (It's like a general post office.) He is not able to respond to email but enjoys receiving them.
Many thanks,
Leslie Ryan

Now, I am a little fuzzy on a few things. Since I do not own a d I am not familiar how the engine looks in the rear compartment. Is it a side mounted engine and tranny like in late 80's caddys and delta 88's, or is it a rear facing motor. If it is I need to know roughly what the drive trasin looks like. I am somewhat knowledgeable when it comes to motors, but a few factors have to come in to play for a lets say chevy 350 or big block to be put in the d.
The rotation of the crank has to be the same. The chevy 350 is clockwise from the front the motor in the dmc has to also be the same, clockwise from the front of the motor, not the car. If this is so, you could, space permitting, do anything you want with a good machine shop behind you. The tranny will not bolt up unless you change the bell housing obviously, though I wouldn't recommend using the dmc trans. I had a 6cyl. in my firebird, with a 5-speed, I pulled the motor, dropped in a chevy 350, with a bellhousing from a iroc(which has a v8). It bolted up fine. Here's where the problems start. I have a 10 1/2" flywheel with an 8" clutch disc. The spline on the transmission is metric, and since no v8 motors have a metric splined transmission, I had to use the 8" disc. Needless to say the car flew, no slippage on the clutch, due to a strong pressure plate. After a few hole shots I blew the first clutch disc apart. The little springs around the center, which absorb the initial shock of engagement, literally stretched and wrapped around the shaft. This happened 2 more times, not to mention the fact I went through a nice posi rear. I ended up changing the transmission to a 5-speed from a v8 H.O. camaro, which has an standard spline, and can accept clutch discs up to 12", obviously I used a 10 1/2" since that is the biggest that I could fit. If the crank rotation is the same, and you have the right machine shop to fabricate the mounts, you probably could get a bigger motor in though I would recommend changing the trans.
If someone could e-mail me a copy of the drivetrain I could give it a look over and see what could be done without doing a complete frame-off stock car re-build. I'd like to keep the d looking stock myself, but with a few horses and some nice torque in the back.

You can still run the test as I indicated to determine if your problem is fuel pump related. As I had mentioned before, go back to your electrical compartment and locate the RPM relay (black or green plastic cover with a blue multi pin connector) located near the rear section. Hook up a test light between the any ground wire and the white/blue wire in the multi pin connector. If the lamp lights than you'll know that there's voltage going to your fuel pump. If the light does not come on than you localized the problem. Joe/DeLorean Services

John, Sounds like poor workmanship. The misalignment of your window was due to an "off track condition". The coffee grinder sound is what we call "ratcheting". The gear assembly is not meshing properly and is self destructing. You probably have a factory set up, it would be advisable to replace the unit with the improved version available from the major DeLorean part suppliers. Joe/DeLorean Services

At this point my just quitting while on the open road and running perfectly problem has narrowed some.
The IGN system is fine, timing, spark, and all that appear to work OK and It appears that I have better than half a tank of gas.
The engine fires right up with an once of gas down the pipe! all systems seam to function until that once is used.
My next attack will be on the fuses and then an attempt to see if the fuel pump is running.
Now I can try Joe's test but I have to make a trouble lite I usually use a meter for checking circuits.

In an effort to rid VIN #6344's "curse" (standing water in the floorboard after any A/C use), I am trying to clean out the A/C drain tubes. I have dealt with the hose that is under the passenger-side wheel well (which I believe connects to item # 17 on Section 7-1-2 of the parts catalogue). According to the book, there is also a "plenum drain tube" (item # 36 in the same section). The problem is that I can't seem to find it, though with the 90% humidity outside, I usually give up after about 60 seconds of searching... Where is this tube and how can I get to it?

Good suggestion, I am going to have some time on Sunday to try to track down the problem.
I have a feeling that the failure of the engine to catch using the starting fluid means no spark. I may try a bit of plain ol'e gasoline just to confirm.
Do you happen to know if just a jumper across the Inertia switch is a valid test mode or does something else need to be done?
I am scanning all my back mail looking for the other cut out switches that I can jump one at a time in an effort to find the problem.
Any other suggestions from any one would be great.
And Joe: I wonder if your light test would work just cranking the engine? I was going to pull the access panel and run a lead from the pump to see if the pump was coming on at start up.

Oh' my baby runs fine again!
Yep got her running like a kitten again!
Thanks to every one especially Joe for the support.
The least I can do is out line what I did and the results of each step.
For anyone just crossing this thread:
I drive a very well maintained 81 DeLorean late October build with Most upgrades. About 3 months ago I was marooned 300 miles from home with a hot DMC that would not start. Got towed home. The repair was mostly inertia switch and twisted fuel pump line. The fuel pump was replaced with a full TankZilla along with new sender, all new fuel lines, boot everything.
Two weeks ago while out for the first time, my Delorean just quite in mid stride at speed with just 48 miles on the current gasoline fill up. Towed back home to receive TLC.
Today first I checked the fuses and replaced the #1 10amp &# 2 20amp fuses. and tried starting....no fire!
Next I fed the intake an once of Gasoline and tried again, .....short fire! then dry cranking......
Added a gallon of Gasoline
Next I fed the intake an once of Gasoline and tried again, .....short fire! then dry cranking......
Next I replaced the Temp switch DPN 102125. The old one was missing the '0' ring DPN 102383. and had very chorded contacts.
Dry cranked again....No fire!
Next I replaced the ECU module, Next I fed the intake an once of Gasoline and tried again, .....Fire in the HOLE!, I got a good start then the engine quit but I could hear the fuel pump running as the engine spun down. Tried another start, with a tap on the gas pedal......Fire in the HOLE! ...and running!
I let her idle till worm and then did several restarts. Plenty BIG fire in Hole now.
I still need to go back and check the fuel tank for Pump pick up leaks loose fittings etc.
But Now I am happy again!
Wink< Thanks to all again!

I just replace my fuel filter (what a huge pain!!) and as luck would have it as soon as I turned the key, drip drip drip, it was leaking. So obviously I messed something up, leaking from the banjo bolt on the top. I tefloen taped the bottom fitting and it appears to not be leaking, but that banjo fitting is. While installing I had a tought time getting the banjo bolt tight and keep the holes lined up. So my question is: Do the holes in the banjo bolt and the fuel line have to line up? Is there room in the fitting for the fuel to flow if they aren't? Any other tips for this seemingly simple, but actually quite a pain task of changing the filter? this is for lee w/ the engine that cuts out when he has gas.
i just fixed a similar problem. my 82, that i just recently sot w/ only 2k miles was doin the same thing. my mech. (here in the bay area of San Francisco said that i ran out of gas. but i kno how far i had driven and how much gas i had in the tank. i then proved it to him by taking him to the gas station w/ me when i filled up. i ended up fixing it myself.
i checked to see if the fuel pump(which u get to via the hatch under the spare tire), cuz i figured that the pump probly had a hose going to the bottom of the tank, to access all of the fuel. well, i thot it(if there was one) may have come loose. there was one but it was connected. to make a long story short...the line is attached to a large piece of plastic called a baffle. now that is supposed to be attached, via a bolt which was melted into the bottom of the tank. mine had come undone. i retrieved the washer and reattached the baffle to the tank. now i can drive til i realy run out of fuel. feel free to email me if u have questions on how to get there....its real easy...im no mechanic.
hope this helps.

You know I have only ever seen one other DMC in my life other than my own and then it was at a distance and threw a chain link fence going the other way. As it is with you I only just found out that there was another one just 20 miles away, but we never met! now the owner move away. There are maybe 20 DMC's in the bay area, but I have yet to see one on the road. About the only Time I have any chance at all is when I park in front of a shop window...Wink<

I pulled the pan and checked the filter, looked clean, and changed the oil with new Dexron III.
After the car is warmed up the transmission shifts perfectly and I can drive it all day without any problems. But after it sits all day in the parking lot at work I have to sit waiting for it to warm up to drive it.

There were 1:24 scale models (making the DMC about 19cm or 5 1/2" long), as well as smaller ones (seemed to have a battery motor?!). Made by Aoshima Bunka Kyozai Co.Ltd. in Japan.

Travis, That tube is located on the firewall (or trunk wall) just about in the center of the trunk, underneath the fuel pump panel. You really have to feel around to find the hole. And I'm sure a hole is all you will find - my drain tube was missing, and I expect that it just fell out at some point. I purchased a new one from DMC Houston and installed it, however, I don't expect it to stay there long. There is nothing to hold the tube in place, and the rubber is so flexible that it pulls out easily. I removed the grill from over the plenum chamber and fed it down from the top of the plenum chamber so that it would hold better. I may try to find some type of large clip or spring to use to hold it in place, or possibly a little contact cement on the tube will do it.

Mike,
If you look at the inside of the banjo, you will see that it is grooved. Therefore, the answer is that the holes do not have to line up.
When you replaced the fitting did you have the copper washers? There are usually washers on both sides of a banjo fitting. Teflon tape is something to avoid as little strings of tape can break off & will end up clogging something down stream at the most inopportune time.

Did you change the copper washer. You are not suppose to reuse them, when properly seated the washer will crush slightly. Once crushed, they must be replaced or annealed, which is not practical. Its also possible, that you have a piece of dirt on one of the surfaces.

Hmm... I don't know if the light test is foolproof, but I had the same problem and it was fixed with a new tranny computer...

I looked around on the web to get information about the DeLorean but then I came across a couple websites about a Firestar 500. Does anyone know anything about it?
Thank You,
Alex

The copper washers used with the fittings are what seals the joint. I wouldn't recomend using teflon tape. It won't dissolve and if it's down stream of the filter will find it's way into the injectors. The filter is the same as several European cars use so if you lost or discarde the washers a Volvo or Saab dealer, for example, should have replacements.

Hi All:
I thought I would comment on todays road test of my "D" after chasing down a quit with out warning on the road problem.
My DMC started right up, made it to the gas station for a fill up (2 Gals) with out problem, a trip to the bank and then a quick 6 mile road test. We did some freeway, town, stop and go and then home. Not a hitch!
There may well still be a problem, but for those of you who like doing your own work as I do, I trust that both success and failures posted here will be of help. For my own part I compile all the post dealing with operational problems and print them out adding them to my DMC service manual.
I plan some preventive maintenance this weekend including a check of the fuel tank, fuel pump lines etc..., I will post the results which will tell us something about the initial repair.

I took Lee's suggestion of waxing my DeLorean last month. It sure was a lot of work, but looks fantastic.
I got caught in the rain today, in Mobile Alabama, when it rains, brother it POURS. About two inches in 30 minutes. Oh, it also is 90 degrees out.
My car looks great after the rain, the few water spots that were on it wiped off.
That is the good part of the day.
I was moving my car from the main garage to the small one where I usually store it. I had not driven it in a couple of weeks. It started up and ran great, until I got to the bottom of the drive way, then it died.
Then it started to rain (see above) and the thunder and lightning were spectacular. The real problem was that my car was sitting in the middle of the street and my garage was uphill. So I moved my truck to finish blocking the street, I live on a deadend, and went inside to dry off and cool off. I figured I would review the DMCNEWS archieves to get some ideas. Well, the power went out, for about two hours, so of course no PC or internet.
When it finaly stopped raining, I bypassed the inertia switch and checked my relays. Everything was OK. So I ran a dedicated line from the battery to the fuel pump (hook the wires to the fuel pump first, then to the battery, you will avoid sparks at the fuel pump) The pump just clunked, it would not run. Latter this week, I will swap the fuel pump. I replaced this pump in 1995, I bought it from the DeLorean supplier that claims to be number one.
I ended up towing my car back up the driveway where it now sits at the mercy of the elements. I'm sure glad I invested the time in waxing the stainless, the weather will not affect it as it has in the past.
Thanks Lee, for figuring out how to wax a DeLorean

It cranked fine, so I bypassed the inertia switch. No luck, so I checked my relays, they were fine.

Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 22:16:48 EDT From: CarlIanNew(AT)aol.com Subject: DML: Windshield washer pump solution
I have implemented the following windshield washer pump solution for those who do not need an original replacement.
1. remove pump from bottle 2. carefully separate motor from housing 3. I hack-sawed off the flare from the pump housing to be more flush (do not disturb the nipple 4. Drill out (7/16 I believe) the center of the pump (just far enough to remove the blade which moves the water. 5. carefully tap the drilled hole (i used a 7/16 x 20 tap) 6. purchase a SS 7/16 x 20 bolt (depth will be <1/2 inch) 7. place rubber O-ring around bolt and tighter to pump housing 8. Insert back into bottle 9. Purchase $7 ANCO WW pump 10. mount to side of WW bottle holder 11. Connect hoses and connections
Good luck & use caution. Email if more details are needed.
thanks, carl

I may be mistaken, but didn't DMC at one point offer a luggage set made to fit the D's trunk? If so, anyone know of or have a set?
