Subject: Tires MIGHT be found here
I don't know if the following two places still have the tires in stock,
but
two ads in the January issue of "european car" magazine had the Pirelli
P600, Yokohama AVS Intermediate and, Yokohama AVS A+4, Yokohama AVS U+4
and
Bridgestone Potenza HP41 listed in sizes that fit both the front and rear
of the DeLorean.
One place is called The Tire Rack in South Bend, Ind. Their phone number
is
1-800-428-8355. Hours are 8am until 8pm Eastern Time M-F and 9am until 5pm
on Saturday.
The other place is Discount Tire Direct at 1-800-483-7555. Hours are 7am
until 6pm Mountain Time M-F and 8am until 1pm on Saturday.
I didn't compare all the tire options, but their prices appear to be
identical.
The Pirelli P600 (VR rated) listed for $103 ea. in front and $159 ea. in
back.
The Bridgestone Potenza HP41 (HR rated) listed for $50 and $90.
The Yokohama AVS Intermediate (VR rated) listed for $85 and $124.
The Yokohama AVS A+4 (VR rated) listed for $79 and $105.
The Yokohama AVS U+4 (HR rated) listed for $76 and $100.
Personally, I want to get the Pirelli P600 is stock is still available at
the end of the summer.

You may try the recomended pressure, 23-29 (F) 30-34(R) but the critical
factor
is even tire wear.. After each month measure thread depth, it should be
even
all across the foot print, Lower on the sides = under-inflation, lower in
the
middle = over-inflation.

Subject: Keys, etc.
I've been a lurker trying to subscribe
for a long time. A firewall keeps me
out, though. Working on it . . .
The information supplied here is wonderful!
As a DeLorean fanatic myself I have plenty
of questions myself, but I promise I will
only ask one when I also have something to
contribute. Thus my contribution:
My early '81 (#1280) has the two key system.
However, I long ago discovered that the ignition
key opens the driver's door perfectly! It does
not open the passenger door. The door key, with
the little DMC flashlight, works on both doors.
I suggest others try this, as it is difficult to
stash a DMC key in your wallet!
And a question:
A a recent DeLorean event here in Ohio, I was
embarrassed (?) when someone pointed out that my
brake lights are intermittent. They told me this
is common; just clean the circuit boards. I took
out both boards but they were sparkling clean.
When the lights work, they ALL work, telling me
it is not crud on the boards.
It must be a connection in the relay compartment
or elsewhere deep in the car. Any suggestions?
Now more info:
I live in Cleveland, home of DeLorean Cadillac.
They service and occasionally sell the cars.
Last year they ran a very exciting TV commercial
featuring the DMC-12. It had classical music and
pictures of Cadillacs and Deloreans; no cheap
"used car" voiceover.
I called Mark Delorean (Nephew of John Delorean, if
I'm not mistaken) to compliment him on the commercial.
He gave me a copy of it, which I will show to anyone
who wants to see it in Nashville.
And another question:
I have the same A/C problem as someone who posted two
weeks ago. Suddenly no juice to the compressor! It
happened just after I messed with the cooling fan bypass
in the relay box. Are these related? My fans work; did
I accidentally sabotage my A/C?
Thank you for this excellent forum.

That is assuming all four wheels are properly aligned and balanced and
remain that way. Something I have never had much luck accomplishing on
Missouri's highways.

I will need to replace my plastic overflow bottle before long. What is
the
current wisdom on this replacement? I have seen both stainless steel and
aluminum versions. Costs are relatively the same. Pros, Cons, any
advice on
which way to go?

One thing to check is if there is pressure to the system. If the freon
leaks out, I believe the pressure sensors on the accumulator (behind the
front right tire) will keep the compressor from turning on. To test this,
you can first just try running 12V right to the wire that goes into the
compressor (the curly one on the top). This will tell you if the
compressor
is working. After that, you can try shorting each of the switches on the
accumulator and see if they are working.

James & Everyone Else
I just joined the group and wanted to say hi. From what I have
read, it doesn't sound like there are many east coaster's here. I am in
SC. I'm 24 and dont currently own a DeLorean. I've been interested in
them for years but never had the resources to investigate them in depth.
Now that the computer age has hit, I have learned more about DeLoreans
in the past month than I have in the past 5 years.
I am going to graduate college (Clemson Univ.) in December and
plan to buy one shortly thereafter. I have been reading past issues and
gaining more and more knowledge daily but I still have a good bit to
learn still before buying.
James, I have a question. I was wondering if there was a way of
downloading past issues in large chunks. Instead of d/l each issue one
by one, I would like to d/l many (or all) of them at once. I want to
compile one big list so I can search for different topics. I feel that a
list like this could be useful for me to search for different
characteristics to look for when buying. It also could serve as a
troubleshooting guide for anybody who is having problems. Please let me
know so I can know if I should keep d/l each issue one by one or not.
Thanks

No answers to your questions but a question of my own. When you open the
driver's door doesn't the relay also open the passenger door? I own an '83
vin 16000 and if you open either door with the key the other door unlocks
at
the same time.

David Olson:
I am in the same situation and plan to replace plastic overflow unit with
the stainless steel version, rather than going with the aluminum one.
Seems
to me they will both work equally well and I think the stainless steel one
would look better.
I'm also purchasing a new brass radiator and redoing all the old cooling
hoses along the entire system. Hopefully, I'll get around to all of this
later this month.
BTW, I'd appreciate you sharing any info you have obtained on pricing of
the stainless steel bottle and who all carries it for resale.

Subject: CONCOURS ISSUES
I have an early 81, #01149, and have some questions on authenticity.
1. Should this car have a locking gas cap? (if 'yes' is it a factory or
dealer
option?)
2. Did any of the factory cars, other than test drive cars, have the
letters on
the rear bumper filled in with silver paint? (I noticed this on two
separate
cars in one of the latest books 'DeLorean 1977-1993')
Best regards, The Silver Fox

Don,
My "D" came down the assembly line just before yours. (VIN #1141) When
I bought it in 1994, it came with a locking gas cap - same key as the
ignition. I don't know for sure whether this was factory or dealer
supplied, but I haven't found anything else on the car that was a
dealer option, so my guess is that it was factory. Also, ran a quick
check in the parts manual, to see if there were two different styles,
but was unable to locate the gas cap.
Also, the letters on my rear bumper were neither filled nor painted. I
have since had DeLorean One install brushed stainless letters. A
number of the cars that I have seen have undergone the same treatment
with letters from D1 or other sources.
Hope this helps a little

Subject: Found tires.
Finally found some tires (by the way thanks Chase, but I found The Rack
in a
car and driver about two hours before I read your reply). I got the
Yokahama's. The sales man at The rack knew the car the moment he heard
the
tire sizes. It seems that they get a few calls a month and that the De
lorean is the only car with these sizes. O.K. matbe not the only car.
They
did get one call from a guy with a modified hot rod. Price for 4 V rated
tires was about $440.00 deliverd. That beat out all the local guys by
about
$200.00 minimum. By the way, I think there are a few whear houses in
north
NJ that have the Pirellis in stock. The rack has enough Yokohamas for
another seven cars. As I understandand it the tires shouldn't be computer
balenced. What is the name of the type of method that should be used? Is
it buble spun balanceing?

before.
I haven't heard from you since.
For those of you who, like myself, will be masochistic enough to drive
thier
DMC more then three hundered miles to the expo this year, I still have
power
lumbar units for sale. Price is still $199.00 per seat.

James,
Just sent you a letter with $15.00 for code to download owners manual.
We have been experiencing an electrical problem, battery discharges
while car is running. Installed new alternator and now car is
overcharging!! Dramatically overcharging!!!
So, getting another new alternator in the hopes that the last new one
was bad. But...can you help me find a wiring diagram anywhere?
(Anybody you know that has had similar problem?)
Please let me know.
Owner of the car is Dan Surrin, I'm just the computer jock trying to
help out a good friend.
Thanks.
