Subject: LOCKING GAS CAP
Following is an excerpt from an answer to my Concours question:
>"My "D" came down the assembly line just before yours. (VIN #1141) When
>I bought it in 1994, it came with a locking gas cap - same key as the
>ignition. I don't know for sure whether this was factory or dealer
>supplied, but I haven't found anything else on the car that was a
>dealer option, so my guess is that it was factory. Also, ran a quick
>check in the parts manual, to see if there were two different styles,
>but was unable to locate the gas cap."
Thanks for the input Henry. Now if we can find someone with Vin #01150,
or just
a bit higher, with a locking gas cap then we have the answer that it was
probably a factory item versus a dealer add-on.
Anybody else out there that might help solve this puzzle?

Subject: Painted Letters on Bumper
This an earlier excerpt from myself to the group:
>"Did any of the factory cars, other than test drive cars, have the
>letters on the rear bumper filled in with silver paint? (I noticed
>this on two separate cars in one of the latest books
>'DeLorean 1977-1993')"
This may be a difficult question to get an answer to and I would
like to keep trying but in the mean time does anyone out there
know of a way of getting paint off of the back bumper in case
this is the way I have to go to make it 'original'?

I was looking thru some of the old DeLorean World magazines (ie. 1984
etc.) I some bunches of really great stuff. Some of the items that caught
my
eye were the posters. Are any of these still available? I especially
liked
the one that has the car partially covered with snow. Any one out there
know
of some sources?

Subject: Unknown Relay in Engine Compartment
Here's another question, who's answer can not be found in the DMC Parts
Book that I have. Along the left side of the firewall in the engine
compartment is a capacitor that is part if the ignition system. Located
just below and left of it is what appears to be a Bosch relay mounted to a
bracket that joins the capacitor bracket. The item definitely looks
factory
original, but doesn't show up anywhere in the DMC Parts Book. I was
wondering if anyone knows what this relays does? And does anyone have a
cross-reference listing for replacement of it? As appears to be quite
common on these relays, the numbers on top wear away completely after a
few
years.
Thanks as always everyone!!

Subject: No. 8 Fuse is ????
The computer reproduction of the '82 DeLorean manual has been a truly
helpful item (Thanks James), but I recently discovered that one item is
not
present in it. When I pulled and then reinstalled all 18 fuses a while
back
due to a won't-stop problem (that has since solved itself!!), I ended up
putting everything from No. 8 on one spot out of order. I discovered this
when I blew the fuse that controls the windows and radio, which wasn't too
bad as I had a 10 amp in the slot instead of a 30 amp as required.
Anyway, the manual does not state the amperage for the No. 8 fuse which is
second from the top in the middle column. I think it is 20 amp, but was
wanting to double check to make sure. Anyone know for sure?
Thanks!
~ Chase
BTW, if anyone would like, I can post the protected-ciircuist and amps for
all 18 fuses. Just let me know if you need the info and I'll do it ASAP.

I run Goodyear Eagle Aquatreads 195/60HR14's front, 225/60HR15's rear.
The 1cm narrower tread translates to a 6mm shorter circumference
(compared to the original 235/60HR15's). So milage isn't affected by
a measurable ammount. (of course, YMMV! :-)

It

Subject: Re: Tires
There's been quite a bit of discussion about tire sizes in the news letter
recently. I may be able to help by sharing my experiences with tires. I've
run 245/60/15's and 245/50/15' with no clearance problems. The 235/60/15
is
aprox. 26.1 inches in diameter. (These figures, by the way, can vary a bit
with different types and brands of tires). It is 7.92 inches wide. The
245/60/15 is aprox. 26.57 inches in dia. and 8,39 inches wide. The
245/50/15
is aprox. 24.69 inches in dia. with a width of 8.98 inches. The 50 series
tire works out to the equivalent of a 12% lower final gear ratio so
there's a
slight increase in acceleration. The biggest problem is matching tire
types.
50 series are performance tires and it's difficult to find 14 tires in
the 50
series configuration. I used 245/50/15 Goodyear Gatorbacks on the rear
and Z
rated Riken 195/60/14 directional tread tires in the front. The Gatorbacks
became extremely noisy as they increased their wear to the point they
sounded
like snow tires. I'm currently running Yokohama AVS intermediates in the
proper size and find them the best alternative to date.

Subject: AC opps possible explanation
Reply to Mike Substelny
If your AC dosn't work now check your fuse to the system. Grab a handfull
of replacement fuses. If it is a burned out fuse replace it and try
running
the AC at all fan speeds. If it tends to blow out at speeds 3 and 4 in
particular than either you did something with the wireing or you have a
bad
interior fan switch. This is assuming that it isn't the compressor
itself.
You might also want to check the interior fan on a few other settings
besides the AC, this will help tell you if it is the interior fan. Keep
in
mind that if you used the three wire quick fix it may be the reason. The
new model with the fuses in it is much safer (I don't know witch one you
did
so excuse me if I'm sounding rude to someone who installed the new one).
You may also have hooked up the wires in the wrong sequence if you used
the
factory quick fix. I really don't know about how that would effect it
though. As I understand it the quick fx was just that and the factory
never
had a chance to come up with somethig better.

Jory Bell recently sent me a copy of his 1981 DeLroean Owners Handbook
(thanks!) and it goes into some detail about the locking gas cap and
which key opens it. I would interpret this to mean that it was a factory
installed item. If memory serves, I believe they did away with the
locking gas cap the same time they switched to the "flapless" hood.

Actually, the lose concant is almost always on the taillight assembly
circuit board itself...Those little contact rattle themselves lose after
a while...
There are several options, if it really bothers bothers you...
1) DeLorean parts places such as DeLorean one will be able to provide
new, original, or redesigned boards to eliminate this problem.
2) Get an anvil and CAREFULLY whack those poor little concacts back
into place.
3) Go and get some washers and install them to bridge gaps, or use
solder.

Most of you all know that I re-created the 1982 DeLorean Owners handbook
in Adobe Acrobat (those who don't can download the file from the mailing

(thanks
Jory!). My question for all the owners of the '83 DeLoreans is, what does
your
manual look like? Is is like the '82 manual or are there differences
that would warrant a recreation of it also?

Considering the DeLorean is a U.K. product and they are notorious for
using
natural rubber wherever possible (like in the brake seals), I would not
recommend using any solvents on the bumpers of the DeLorean. Probably, the
best way to go about returning the bumper and letters to all black, would
be to use some flex paint to redo the entire assembly.
Anyone else have experience with this or other
suggestions/advice/warnings?
~ Chase
P.S. My rear "DeLorean" lettering is painted red and I plan to one day
scrape off as much of the paint as possible and install the stainless
steel
letters on the bumper and door sill plates.

I have an '81 DeLorean VIN#1529 and it does not have the locking gas cap,
but does have the fuel flap. Not that this means anything, as I believe
someone replaced the gas cap at some point with one that doesn't seal very
tight. My Porsche 924 had a pressurized Bosch K-Jetronic fuel system and
whenever I removed the gas cap that was always a hiss as the tank
depressurized. This doesn't happen on my DeLorean. But I was assuming that
it should if the gas cap fit properly. Am I correct?
