The DeLorean gas cap is shown in Section 2.4.0 of the DMC Parts Book.
According to it, the lockign gas cap was used up to VIN#4128 in 1981.
After
that the non-locking cap was used on the production line. I do have a
lockign gas cap on mine which is VIN#1529, however, I seriously doubt it's
originality as it does not fit snugly and I do not have a key that fits
it.

As far as the two-key system goes for the early '81s in regard to the door
locks and ignition. I have a two-key system. My ignition key will fit in
the door locks, but will not turn to activate the tumblers. My door key
does fit both locks and works fairly well for a 15-year-old car that has
had a lot of tinkering done to it. I have compared the two keys and they
are nothing alike. For the person out there who said his ignition key fits
one of his doors (but not the other) I would hazard to guess that the one
set of tumblers is very worn and can be activated by several different
keys
or that the tumblers were reset to somehow match both of the keys (albeit
an unlikely proposition).

To the DeLorean Fans re youthful enthusiam:

My youngest son (24yrs) and I just finished a refurbishment of an 81
DCM-12 and he was motivated to contribute considerable effort in order
to use it as the "escape" car in his wedding last Saturday. The bride
was "beautiful" and the ceromony was well executed. Her entry into
the DeLorean with her semi-long wedding gown draped gracefully over
the door sill of the DeLorean made a very classy exit from an
otherwise super evening. When picture are available, I'll try to get a
scan made to provide if you're interested. We will title the picture
"On to the Future"!

We really enjoyed working on the car after it sat for about 5yrs. It
was a great way to enjoy time with my son after his college
graduation, and before his wedding and his relocation to Cedar Falls.

Just wanted to share this and what a great hobby auto restoration is.

Josh,

I have a rear wing on my 81, and it does look good on there. I don't
like
the spoiler look on most cars, but it does go well with the DMC look.

Mine had it when I bought the car, so I don't know what was done to
install
it. There is some rust developing on the louvers and wing where they
meet.
There is some additional rust on the joints of the wing itself.

I have seen a car with a 3rd break light mounted on the wing. This is
good
for a car that is lowered (Like mine). I would like to put this on my
car
some time.

I also like the way the car looks lowered. I am told by Rob Grady that
this
was how the car was supposed to be shipped from the factory, but they had
to
raise it for safety reasons. I think the head lights are too low for US
standards when the car is lowered.

The only problem I had was that the drive axle hit the metal shield under
the car. I had to move them out of the way. The car rides and handles
great! Even with the twin turbos, I still want more power!!

Anybody have any idea what an author signed copy of Hard Driving is worth
or
a December 81 Motor Trend with the De lorean vs. the world article that
has
John Z's name and Far Hills NJ address on the subscription? These aren't
for sale but I am interested in prices.

A few more things I've been currios about.

Any body know the year of the stainless steel corvete in the corvete
museum
(I've only heard about this, not seen it) or the two stainless steel
Lincolns that Ford was rumored to make? I'm familiar with the two proto
type 911's that Porsche produced.

As the Wolfman said, my tail light problem
turns out to be bad contact on boards. Not
an exotic wiring snafu after all!

TIP:
A well tuned DeLorean should run perfectly
with 87 octane gas. When I put 89 octane in
mine I hardly ever see a difference. If I do,
it's time for a tune up! A car requiring the
expensive gas would have been against JZD's
philosophy of an "ethical" sports car.

TIP:
As reported a few months ago in DMC News, the
first DeLorean ever made is indeed on display
here in Cleveland. It sits side by side with a
stainless steel Lincoln and a stainless 1936
Ford (both mentioned in SSI). In the same room
are a Pontiac GTO and a Mercedes 300SL gullwing,
both part of the DeLorean Heritage. They are
at the Crawford Auto/Aviation Museum on the east
side of Cleveland at University Circle. If anyone
is coming to Cleveland let me know and I'll make
sure you can find it.

QUESTION:
Unfortunately, the Mercedes gullwing is displayed
with the driver's door open while the DeLorean
has its door closed. This is because the torsion
bar on the DeLorean has come away from the body.
If you try to open the door on the museum's car
you will find out just how much work that torsion
bar does!

I want to volunteer to fix the car, but I have no
idea how to do it. That torsion bar must be powerful
enough to rip my head off if I do something wrong!
Does anyone have any evperience with doing this job
the right way? Can you give me some advice?

At last years expo during the tech seminar, Rob Grady talked about his
clutch linkage modification - has anyone else heard of this or have any
experience with it?
