As some of you know, Dave Takeuchi's page got nuked by the service

One thing we are missing is the old content as a starting point. We
had some good stuff including a fairly comprehensive FAQ on the old

Subject: Easy Fix for "Moving" Switches
I noticed recently that the three switches for the door locks and rear
defroster, as well as the two dummy switches, continually "move"
themselves
around and refuse to lie in a nice evenly-level pattern all together. Fed
up with always pushing them back down snugly, I removed each and wrapped a
layer of electrical tape around the bottom of each housing. On the left
dummy switch I cut a little bit off the lowest lip as it was rubbing
against one of the main wiring harnesses and wouldn't go down all the way.
Result: Problem solved. None have moved the slightest bit in the last two
weeks.
A simple fix that I recommend for everyone who is annoyed by such a thing
on their own DeLorean.

Subject: New Brass Radiator Has Arrived
OK, my new radiator arrived this morning and rather than tackling the
removal of the old one and installation of the new unit, here I am giving
my first-sight opinions of the newest addition to my most-expensive toy
car.
The brass radiator cost $289.75 and with overnight shipping from New York
to Missouri the total bill came to $343.75. Not cheap, but reasonable
compared to the cost of an original aluminum/plastic radiator that would
just fail one day anyway.
My personal opinion is that the unit looks like a standard core from
something else that was then completed with custom-built end caps. My
brass
unit has been painted a glossy black, which is somewhat of a
disappointment. But in the logn run, I suppose I will appreciate it more
as
the brass color might have shown through the front grill (although I doubt
it). The unit looks like it will do its job adequately, but it won't win
any awards for a sweeping beautiful design. Just a core with two
rectangular end caps welded in place and three outlets for hoses. Oh well,
can't have every piece of the car be sculptured to match the gullwing
doors
I suppose.
Now for the installation of the unit...I'll let you guys know how smooth
or
troublesome it was once I get it done in the next three days.

Subject: DeLorean Motor Center - holding a grudge?
A few months back, I had spoken to Don at DeLorean Motor Center and
metioned that I was interested in locating a set of knobs and a faceplate
for an ASI radio. He said he thoguht he had some and he'd let me know.
Time passed and I never heard from Don, but I too, had forgotten about it
so that was no big deal.
Today I called Don and asked him again about the knob/faceplate set. He
said he was sure he had at least one or more, but he didn't think his
partner "Dee" would let him sell to me based on what I wrote about my
visit to their shop here in the DeLorean Mailing List! Can you believe
it? He agreed that I had a right to my own opinion, but in his opinion I
made him out to sound like a liar, specifically about the "world's
fastest DeLorean" that was in his shop. I told him that I didn't think it
sounded that way, but also said that he was entitled to his opinion.
I was not aware that Don/Dee was a subscriber (and I don't think he/she
is), but I certainly would've wished they had said something at the time
rather than refuse to sell me parts later as a way to "get even". If
someone is taking the time and effort to "feed" them copies of the
DeLorean Mailing List, in the future, please try and get their feedback
(if any) as well.
I had heard other stories about this type of treatment from DeLorean
Motor Center, but after meeting Don and Dee last month, I truly did not
believe it. I guess I SERIOUSLY mis-judged both of their characters.
BTW, Don/Dee, if you're out there lurking, show as much backbone as you
do pettiness and speak up for yourselves!

Many of the screws used on the DeLorean appear to be Phillips head but are
actually Pozidrive. A Phillips screw driver can strip the Pozidrive heads
so
just go to the hardware store and purchase a Pozidrive screwdriver. While
you're there compare the different types of sheetrock (drywall) screws
with
the black screws that hold the rear tail light assemblies in the rear
facia.
I think you'll find them a very close match.

Subject: DMC for sale and other assorted rants
John-Eric, are you still interested in my car? If I don't get a call in a
few weeks I'm going to part it out or decide on a 302 conversion.
Well, my insurance Co. looked at the car this morning, her'rs what the
itiot(sp?) took out: muffler, right mufler support, muffler heat shield,
AC
belt, left radiator hose, left back grill on the deck lid, and a scratched
rear bumper-total parts bill about 700.00 plus another 300.00 labor.
Glad I
only have to pay 200.00.
By the way, my vin # is 5844 and my car has stock wood screws holding in
the
tail light lense pannels, not machine screws. When I talked to D-1 (when
I
was still dealing with them for most of my parts needs) and ordered
replacements for the striped ones a few years back Bernstien said it was
stock, not modified.
Someone posted a querry about Rob Grady's green car a while back. You'll
be
able to see it in Nashvill this year. It looks real good for a painted
car.
It's got repyile green paint on the fashia's and the stainless, the black
trim was left black and there are tan accents on the deck lid where the
screens are. The interior is still stock, I don't remember if it was grey
or black. I's lowered by about an inch to an inch and a half and Rob has
his headers on the car. It only adds about 15-25 bph but it gives the
car a
good throaty sound. I think the stainless headers are about 1000.00 for a
set (I could be high or low), but the car still pass NY inspection
without a
problem.

Subject: Radiator& Window - Updates
OK, for all you do-it-yourself mechanics out there that own DeLoreans,
here's an update on my progress of removing the radiator and replacing it
with a brass unit.
Removing the radiator is not as simple as on most cars. Naturally, the
unit
must be removed from beneath the car, but it is more complicated than
that.
I estimate that there are AT LEAST 25 nuts and bolts that must be loosened
to accomplish the job.
The A/C condenser (another radiator-like device) must be removed with the
radiator as they are connected at the top and bottom. The horns and some
plastic moulding must be removed, as well as the three cooling hoses, four
brackets and two pipes to the condenser. These two pipes are connected
diirectly to the thin, flat tubing that wids around the cooling fins and
GREAT CARE must be taken not to twist and break these when removing the
fittings.
Because of this very warning, I have decided to take the car to my
mechanics on Monday and let them do the work. It will cost me about two
hours labor (my estimate), but compared to the cost of buying some large
open-end wrenches and doing it myself, I figured the cost was minimal,
especially if I were to break the condenser and have to buy another one.
I have resealed the stationary glass on my passenger side door. It has
been
drying for the past 20 hours. I'll let it sit for the rest of the weekend
to make sure the window is sealed tight. Urethane tends to take at least
24
hours to dry, but Rog Grady said to let is sit for 2 to 3 days to be safe.
If anyone wants more info on the process, just say so, and I'll explain
how
easy it was.

through that tiny window) that I might want to check my brake lights.
So, sitting still, I did. Seemingly no problems. Everything worked in

Is there a running problem of loose connections or something that show up

A note to other owners who are missing thier pull straps and have seen

advertised by D-1.
I ordered a pair of grey ones about a week ago (black ones were still
available from Kapak when I called them last september). They came in
friday. I'll be sending them back at the begining of the week. They are
the best knock offs I've ever seen, but at 30.00 each I want the real
thing
or an exact match. My complaints are three, the material is not an exact
match, the stiching is ever so slightly off from the original and the
shade
of grey is a bit to light. They are heavy enough and the right size, a
big
problem in the other knock off's I've seen. If you really want knock
off's
I had some made up for my car once and can get then for 22.00 each. D-1
said I was the first return on them when I called and maintained thier
standard policy of full parts price refund no shipping refund.

Subject: Diagnosing the Air Conditioner, R-12?
The AC on my '81 does not blow cold air. The belt is correctly tensioned
and
all thins seem OK, but no cold air comes out.
In fact, the engine doesn't even labor when I switch it on. The fuse is
OK.
I have not cheked for voltage at the compressor yet.
Is there a commonality with these Delorean AC units that I should be
looking
for?
Do the have a tendency to leak anywhere in specific?
Can I still get R-12? That's the big question? I certaily DON'T want to
convert the car to R-13. I understand the usage of different style
fittings
and hoses, etc. are called for in these cases. With only 21K miles on it
I
don't want to destroy it's resale too much with aftermarket fixes. But...
It gets too darn hot in that black interior.
BTW, my Heater/AC swithch hisses profusely when I turn it. It doesn't
seem
to matter what I select it just hisses and does not change from defrost to
heat, to AC, etc. Any help is much appreciated.

Subject: Re: LOCKING GAS CAP
My VIN is 1387, still have locking gas cap which uses ignition key. Also
car
has flapper door over gas cap, which an ad in DeLorean World refers to as
"rare". I was under the impression that early models all had the door,
until
the gas crunch when thieves would open the non-locking flapper and punch
out
around the locking cap with a screwdriver or other sharp object and siphon
out the petrol. Factory then deleted the flapper door to remedy that
situation. Fact or Fiction? Does anyone know?
Regarding various suppliers/repair facilities: I have in the past called
D1
and purchased things from them. I've always been treated courteously and
with no attempt to "hurry up" my call if info was all that I was after.
Never received any wrong item so had no cause to seek refund. About 7
or 8
years ago I had a horrendous crash with the DeLorean. Sheared off an
electric pole with the left front fender, over a 45' embankment, thru an
8"
alder tree 8' up, over riprap rocks the size of a VW, and into a creek.
No
one here in SW Washington or NW Oregon satisfied me that they could
adequately return WAWAZAT to acceptable condition. Don Steger and Don
Eitleman (before his untimely death) of DeLorean Motor Center talked with
me
and my insurance adjuster via phone, we sent many photos of damage to
them,
they made an estimate based on these photos, and my adjuster approved the
repair. I trailered the car to Garden Grove, repairs were completed on
time
and on budget, plus some extra cosmetics and tune up stuff . I could not
believe the quality of the repair, and my friends that have seen the
before &
after still remark on the quality. The car was shown at the "Concours d'
Elegance" in Forest Grove Oregon the weekend after we got back and the
Oregonian newspaper thought enough of it to do a half-page spread with
pictures. The car has been in numerous auto shows, cruise-ins, parades,
etc
and no one has ever remarked that it appeared to have been crashed! Don
Steger took extra time with my wife & me when we picked up the car and
took
me on an extensive road test and gave many helpful pointers/tips.
So..... I
have a great deal of loyalty to DeLorean Motor Center.
As for stainless steel letters for the bumper, several suppliers used to
advertise them, as well as some for door sills, in DeLorean World, but I
haven't seen any in quite a while. I'd be interested in purchasing a set
if
anyone knows of any for sale.
OBTW, our Delorean's license plate is WAWAZAT - that's what folks asked
when
they'd see us drive by; it sounded like an appropriate plate. I've
adapted
it as my "screen name - WAWAZAT1.

Subject: My grand debut
I guess its about time for my debut letter. Being a subscriber for
about 4 months now every day thinking I'm going to write it tomorrow I've
finally gotten down to business. In that time I have become enlightened
with
knowledge about the car and its history which I owe in great part to the
endless contributions of my fellow subscribers.
I am 16 years old and living in the state of Virginia. The upcoming
end of school has prompted me to get serious about getting my license and
I
plan to do a lot of driving in my fathers early 1981 DeLorean this summer
that we purchased about 2 months ago. My love for the car however, goes
much
further back. Yes, I have had somewhat of an obsession with the DeLorean
for
many years now. I can remember at a birthday party some years ago I
watched
BTTF3 in agony as the huge train barreled down the tracks and plowed into
the
DeLorean, scattering it into a sea of debris. In a seriously distressed
emotional state I ran to the bathroom and I must admit that I cried over
that
car.
Some weeks later, I began construction of my own time machine out of
parts I had around the house. The basis for the car body was a little play
car for youngsters called a "cozy coupe", you probably have seen one of
these
at sometime. The roof is contoured and curved so I tilted the car back so
that the roof was on the floor making a "bucket seat." This configuration
also heightened the realism as the doors now opened upwards. To complete
my
creation I taped various parts and circuit boards from, a disassembled TV
and
VCR to the body and interior of the car. A channel selector knob served
as my
time circuits and the CRT tube doubled as the flux capacitor. To complete
the
illusion and give it that "authentic look" I strung a series of Christmas
lights about the car and turned the lights in my basement low.
I could never have dreamed sitting there in that crude contraption
that
I would ever get the chance to drive much less own the car that had
become my
obsession, the DeLorean.
Anyway, we've had the car for not too long now and have only had a
few
problems with it. First and foremost the air conditioning is not
performing
up to satisfaction as the air is not cold and barely comes out from center
and door vents. I realized that we were getting the classic hissing noise
from the mode control switch and sent that off to be repaired. Should this
fix the problems afore mentioned?
The parking brake is completely non-functional. Will we have to buy a
new one or can it be repaired? Just recently as my father and I were
pulling
out from a tool booth, and put the pedal to the floor the car suddenly
lurched forwards, stopped and then picked up again. It seemed as though
the
gas was cut off for a second before the engine resumed. I've been informed
that this might be a problem with the fuel filter, any ideas?
On the issue of tires, am I correct in assuming that Goodyear does
not
make the Eagle GT's anymore (the ones used in Back to the Future). If they
are still available, they would appear to be an excellent replacement to
the
original tires.
BTW, what ever happened to tinted windows on the DeLorean? In many of
the early articles I've read, this option was mentioned. I'm guessing that
the interior of the early black interior cars was dark enough without the
added tint from the windows.
Also plan on lowering the car. Does anyone know how far the front
suspension can be lowered before it starts interfering with the tires? I'd
like the car to be lowered to the height of the one in Back to the Future
which looks very low.
Please excuse my verbosity in this letter. I realize that this list
was
created with the intent of relaying information about the repair and
maintenance of the DeLorean and I will refrain from pouring my emotions
into
ensuing letters.

The locking gas cap uses the ignition key, huh!?! I may have to spray some
WD-40 in my gas cap and see if I can get the thing working again. I am
unsure why the fuel flap was deleted, but always assumed it had to do with
improving the styling of the car and reducing the number of parts and cost
of producing the car. However, your story about thieves siphoning the fuel
sounds plausible also.
Personally, I prefer the gas flap on my car (VIN#1529) since hearing about
stories of the hoods bending at the corners of cars without the flap.

Subject: New Driver
Scott:
A 16-year-old getting to drive a DeLorean. What luck you have!!!! Just
don't be like most 16-year-old male drivers and wreck a majority of the
family cars. BTW, don't worry about verbosity and emotions in your posts
for the most part. The DeLorean Mailing List is about the conveyance of
information regarding repairs and regular maintenance, yes. But it is also
about most anything else to do with DeLoreans. It is a chance for owners
and enthusiasts across the world to "meet" and discuss their cars and
their
love for the timeless beauty JZD set about creating 20 years ago.
As to some of your technical questions...
1) A lack of adequate ventilation is quite common in the DeLorean. The
hissing you heard was from a vacuum leak around the mode switch. It's not
that hard to repair, but is only one piece of the puzzle to trying to get
anything out of the climate control system. Will it fix your problems -
unlikely. The only air circulation I have in my early '81 DeLorean is from
the floor vents. The dash and door vents are non-functional at this time.
2) Replacing the fuel filter on a regular basis is a good idea as the most
expensive parts of the fuel system are located after the filter -
injectors
and fuel distributor. If the filter is bad, you should check the condition
of the fuel pump and related rubber seals. If stored for long periods with
fuel in the tank, the stale gasoline can disolve the rubber seals and clog
up your fuel system. Water can also enter through a dried out and cracked
upper seal and rust out the fuel pump.
3) Goodyear no longer produces the Eagle NCT Series tires for the front of
the car. They do still make it for the back end, although the tire has
been
upgraded to a VR speed rating over the original HR.
4) The DeLorean windshield and side glass ARE tinted. I am unsure about
the
rear glass sections, but the other panes are 100% tinted with a very
slight
brown color. I didn't believe it myself until I removed a piece of the
door
glass and noticed the tint while it was inside the house being cleaned.
I've never noticed problems with glare from outside sources, so I'm
guessing the tint was more for reducing glare than added darkness and
cooling of the interior.
As to your other questions on the parking brake and ride height, I have no
answers for you. My car is lowered and I suppose I could measure the
height
and inform you of what it is as well as send you photos of it. However, I
am unsure how and where road clearance should be measured. Anyone care to
enlighten me?

air conditioners. Based on that, I no longer am worried that the world's
supply of R-12 will disappear overnight so to say. I am having my A/C
recharged this week. I believe the going rate in Central Missouri right
now
is from $15 to $20 per pound of refrigerant. Not too bad IMHO.

Subject: Back Issues updated & DMC-News T-shirt
Thanks again to all who sent me copies of the missing back issues. The
archives have been updated and the Windows version of the commercial has
been uploaded and is also available.
Recently someone asked me about a DMC-News t-shirt. This person thought
that it would be a neat way to publicize the list and would make the
wearer instantly recognizable to other subscribers at DeLorean
gatherings. Any other support for this out there?

Nice idea if it is done right. The ordinary white t-shirt with one- or
two-colro design doesn't sound too exciting. Now, a full-color DeLorean
with some niooce type would be great and a bit more expensively. But then
since when has price been a concern when compared against better quality
for any DeLorean owner. If a T-shirt is to be done, a sweatshirt would be
an easy thing to do as well.
Are there any subscribers out there that do silk-screening on clothes?
