AMEN ! You haven't lived until you are crossing a bridge in NYC and
suddenly see a cloud of steam behind you along with a rapidly climbing
engine temperature ... embarassed doesn't even come close especially when
a bystander make a derisive comment about JZD.

Use a fine (green) Scotchbrite pad - do not bear down. I have been using
Carbon-X in solution to wash my D, it's the same solution that they use
to wash commercial airliners ... it takes off all dirt, grease, finger
printes etc with no effort ... spray it on and hose it off, then dry the
car.

Subject: Door light diagnosis, Start inhibit relay

A couple of months ago someone on DML complained about
passenger door lights that would not shut off when the door
closed. Well, the same thing happened to my car about the
same time, so I was eagerly awaiting his solution. After
those lights drained my battery the first time I began to
disconnect the power at night. Check out these bizzarre
symptoms:

I inspected the switch carefully. Mechanical and electrical
operation were fine.

Then last week the fuse blew, disabling the marker lights,
dome lights, engine compartment light, and trunk light.
When I put in a new fuse it blew immediately.

Then, with no fuse in the fusebox, the "Door Ajar" light on the
dash began to glow faintly. At 2,000 rpm the light reached
full brightness.

DIAGNOSIS: ENGINE COMPARTMENT LIGHT SWITCH
Yesterday through a bit of serendipity, I decided to check out
the engine compartment light for no particular reason. While
I always keep the compartment fairly clean, I had never
cleaned the INSIDE of the light switch. Low and behold; the
switch was full of engine crud, causing a sneaking short!

I don't like the engine compartment light. When I look at my
engine it is usually daytime, so that thing drains the battery
for no reason. Thus I cleaned the switch, but I did not install
it.

Why would crud in the engine compartment light switch
cause the passenger door marker lights to come on? I have
no idea, but today all those wierd symptoms are gone!

START INHIBIT RELAY:
In the relay compartment there are two rows of relays that go
all the way to the passenger side wall. The start inhibit relay
is in the row that is further back. It is the second relay from
the wall on the passenger side, if memory serves. I'll bet all
the cars have them. Sure, I can put in a Bosch, but the
question remains: what is the function of this device in a
five-speed?

C2,

Try your local Volvo dealer. The engine is a B28F.
