Subject: DML: RE: Fuel pump operation
Brandon Moody asked about the operation of the electric fuel pump.
The fuel pump relay (in the relay compartment mounted near the back
near the door lock control module if memory serves) receives impulses
from the ignition system to indicate whether the motor is running. The
relay energizes the fuel pump when it receives a signal (the frequency
of which is the same as the RPM of the engine and I believe it is the
same signal used to drive the tach) and it cuts power to the pump once
it has not received a signal for a second or two. This is a simple
unit based on a 555 timer chip, a couple transistors, and an
integrated relay. If your fuel pump is not being energized properly, I
would suspect that the fuel pump relay is the culprit (the 555 timer
is a bit fragile, and I had to repair my fuel pump relay some time
back by replacing the chip). I recall that the relay is the same as is
used in the early 80's Volvo and think the price last time I checked
was about $35 from my local mechanic. I don't know the part number off
hand.

Subject: DML: Turbos. Vacuum/Boost
I have the Island Twin Turbo setup on my DMC, and have also considered the
effect of the manifold boost on engine items.
I find that I have a defective spark plug (Bosch HR6DS) every few thousand
miles. I can only guess that this is because of the turbo configuration.
After speaking to a Tech at Bosch about the problem, a few new questions
came to mind about the effects of the boost on other vacuum controlled
items. Specifically, the fuel regulator.
If the boost is having some strange effect on the fuel regulator, it is
possible that the mixture will lean out under boost. This is a bad thing
for performance, and the life of the motor (and spark plugs!).
Are there any experts out there on the Fuel regulator? Any part numbers?
Specifications?
I did purchase my car with the turbos installed already, so it is also
possible that the fuel regulator was replaced when the turbos were
installed. Does any one know if this is normal procedure?
Come to think of it, I am assuming that the regulator is vacuum
controlled!
Is it? If not, how is it controlled?
Also on the subject of turbos, I have experimented with removing the air
cleaner (for only a quick ride around the block) to see if there was a air
restriction being caused by the design of the filter box. I found with
the
filter box removed there was a significant improvement in performance and
lag time. Has anyone come up with a replacement air filter set up for
turbos? If not, I may fool around with it.

I recall having the same impression the first time I drove the one I
bought. In fact, I recall checking underneath to see if it really HAD
power brakes. The car had been sitting for a long time (over a year), and
I suspect that the rotors had rusted slightly, along with the hydraulic
parts. I almost immediatly rebuild the brake hydraulic system but didn't
change the pads, and honestly didn't notice a lot of difference. Over
time I've either gotten more used to them or they are getting better.

Subject: DML: Parts Costs comment
With the recent comments on the supposedly high cost of Delorean parts
from the Delorean vendors, I wondered if the commenters have priced parts
of more conventional vehicles. For example, someone mentioned an OEM
windshield recently at $625 delivered. My neighbor's insurance company
just reimbursed my local Dodge dealer $743 for my Caravan's windshield
after his mower tossed a rock at it. So-called list price on the glass
from the dealer was over $1200. One of the Delorean places charges $65
for a set of front and rear brake pads, the ones for my Integra were $100
from the dealer. A Delorean (Bosch) fuel filter from a Delorean place is
$24. A Fram fuel filter for the Integra was $25 from Trak Auto, about $45
from the dealer.
One of the stranger things I have seen is an Accel racing fuel injection
fuel pump in the Summit Racing Equipment catalog. It is a dead ringer for
the Bosch/DMC pump, at $237 compared to $179 offered by a DMC vendor.
So far I believe I have "overpaid" an a could of small items, but it's
been well worth it for the "free" advice and the convenience of not
having to run around to a bunch of auto parts stores whose personnel then
proceed to look at me like I'm from the moon (or is it from the future?)
when I say "81 Delorean". The prices for the more major pieces seem to
have been in line or even a good deal. I agree that interchange lists are
a good idea, especially stuck in the middle of nowhere on Saturday
afternoon, but give the DMC places a try if you have the time (usually
only a couple of days) - you will often be surprised, and it wouldn't
hurt to keep them around.

I don't know for sure from first hand experience, I was just theorizing.
I had suspected that there may be something wrong with one of both of the
fans that is causing the breaker to heat up, or the breaker itself is
failing. Anyway, Phillip wrote back again directly and noted that jumping
the breaker AND the thermal switch had no effect. Still some
head-scratching going on, I'm afraid.
Interesting note - on mine someone has changed the fans to something
lifted from a Volkswagen (VW# AU-431-959-455B to be exact). The fit in
the round part of the fan frame just fine, but they had to use spacers on
the mounting ears to get the depth correct. I'm not sure I'd
wholeheartedly recommend them, the are not an exact fit and they had to
hack up the wiring a little as well. Both fans are identical and look
like they have been on the car for a very long time. I find it strange
that both fans had failed, especially since that seems to be a part of
the car that I have yet to see anyone on the list complaining about.

The power-assist brakes on a DeLorean should have a light
pedal action. I guarantee that the brakes on the car you
drove needed some work.
If there were no other symptoms, I would guess that the
master cylinder was shot (that's strictly a guess, it might be
the booster or something else). Replacement master
cylinders are reasonably inexpensive.
Before buying any DeLorean with suspicious brake problems
you should make sure that the previous owner used the
proper brake fluid. The differences between standard fluid
(DOT 3) and the correct fluid for the DeLorean was discussed
recently on the DML, so you can find details in the back
issues. If the wrong brake fluid has been used there may be
other damage in the brake system.

Universal created a total of seven (7) time machine-converted DeLoreans
for
use in the three "Back to the Future" films. This number includes a
stripped-down DeLorean gimble used for interior shots in all three films,
but not the mock-up DeLorean "shell" for the DeLorean's final scene on the
railroad tracks in BTTF3. At least 3 of the original 7 cars can be seen
daily at the two Universal Studios themeparks in Hollywood, CA and
Orlando,
FL. In 1993, Universal commissioned the creation of four (4) additional
DeLorean time machines, which at the time seemed to signal that a BTTF4
was
on the way, but we found out later that they were created to promote the
themepark Rides around the country and to be displayed in various Planet
Hollywood restaurants around the world. So not counting the fleet of 48
DeLoreans created for the two BTTF Rides, which aren't real cars, there
was
a total of 12 DeLoreans converted by Universal into time machines.
>From: JSteuben@aol.com
>By-the way, I understand that it took 3 DeLoreans to create the D car in
>Back To The Future. =20
This is correct for the first BTTF film. Universal purchased three (3)
DeLoreans for the first film, and two of those three are at Universal
Studios Hollywood, which you can see each day. The gimble car (mentioned
above) can be seen in the "Back to the Future Movie Magic Show"
attraction,
and the other one is driven daily by "Doc Brown" (actor Andy Hagan) around
the park. The third car, actually referred to by the filmmakers as the
"A"
car, is said to reside in Steven Spielberg's own private museum, where
it's
been since 1985. Another one of the original 7 cars resides at USH on the
backlot -- the one with the wide white-walled tires from BTTF3 -- just
collecting dust and damage from the outdoor elements (just like the time
traveling train from BTTF3 down at the Orlando park).
Anyone who lives near either Universal park could actually get the VINs
from
the cars there if they can get close enough (talk to a park attendant, and
show them your DMC membership card -- they'll surely let you get a closer
look just for a VIN #). I've emailed Andy Hagan ("Doc Brown") to send me
the VIN # of the car he drives, but I haven't heard back from him yet.
And
I was at the Orlando park back in January, and tried to get that VIN
myself.
However, the car they have on display there advertised as an "actual movie
car from BTTF1, II, & III" was NOT one of the original 7 cars, but rather
one of the 4 cars later built in 1993 (extremely obvious from the bogus
"Mr.
Fusion" alone). The VIN in that car is completely covered up by some of
the
time circuit coils in the dashboard, and I couldn't find an attendant
nearby
to open it for me for a closer look inside. So anyone in the Hollywood &
Orlando areas should be able to supply that information for the VIN
history,
but I doubt we'll ever know what the VIN # is to the car hidden in
Spielberg's museum. (Just hope he remembered to remove the gasoline in
the
tank, as it'll likely be there at least 70 years too!)

torque on the passengers door and my curious neighbors stood around, the
ratchet applying the counter torque shattered sending the retaining
bracket into the top of the car. I was fortunate the back window was
spared. So, if I am able to get a shop to work the dent out of the top of
the car by this weekend, stop by.
I have seen a lot of e-mail describing encounters with other DeLorean
shops. I would like to say that I have dealt with DMC in Garden Grove for
the past three years and I recommend them to most D owners I meet.
Anytime I have a technical question, Don is willing to take the time and
walk me through the problem.
If anyone in the San Jose area knows a shop that can straighten stainless
steel, let me know at barnesd@kaisere.com.

I have used Rain Dance's BRIGHT & BLACK ... works great on all of the
black surfaces.

John,
DeLorean One (http://www.deloreanone.com) sells new struts, manufactured
to original specifications, from the original manufacturer. The other
suppliers, PJ Grady, DeLorean Motor Company, and DeLorean Motor Center
all sell struts also. See their ads in DeLorean World Magazine.
Expect to pay in the $250 to $300 range for a set of 6.

Look closely and you will see lots of familiar DeLorean parts
come flying out of the wreck. Because of the way it shatters
into a million pieces I think that this DeLorean was specially
modified to burst in a dramatic fashion.

There was a time when Hollywood put animals, especially
horses, through all sorts of cruel and dangerous stunts.
Activist groups cried foul, and now animal cruelty on a movie
set is illegal.
Are you suggesting that it is time to do the same thing for
cars? Just think, someday movies could end with the tag
line: "No automobiles were injured during the production of
this motion picture." :-)

My experience with one example (ours) suggests that there was a definite
problem with the brakes on the D you test drove. Our brakes work well
- -- plenty of stopping power with fairly low pedal pressure. A real pity
that the electrical system isn't as well competent and reliable.
However, as the old adage goes, Brits drink warm beer because their
refrigerators are made by Lucas!

Hi, all. Sorry to bother everyone again, but I have yet another
query...
I'd like to offer a few days of my time to a DMC owner in the
Portland/Beaverton Oregon area to help with maintenence on his/her
DMC, in return for the experience of watching someone work on it and
perhaps a bit of instruction on the specifics of the car.
I admit I have little knowledge of cars and even less experience, but
I have decent general mechanical and technical skills, a fair amount
of experience repairing bicycles and household stuff, and I am
cautious and reliable.
I'm doubting there's any DMC owners close enough to me (Beaverton) to
make this possible (I don't own a car; bicycle and bus are my modes of
transportation), but if by any chance there are, please mail me.
Thank you,

Subject: DML: Replacement of A/C Pulley Bearings
I know someone posted that they recently had replaced their A/C belt and
pulley bearings, but I am unable to find that post, so this is for the
entire list. What is the process of removing and replacing the pulley
bearings themselves for the A/C belt? Do the old ones just punch out and
the new ones press in fairly easily, or are special tools and techniques
required?
I have decided that one summer without air conditioning is enough, and I
am planning or replacing my belt and pulley bearings later this week.
Just looking for some insight before I tackle the job. TIA!!
