Well Darn!
I small bit of DeLorean trivia...

The gasoline does come gushing from the bottom of the car
after Marty removes the arrow. However, I don't think they
meant that the arrow caused the leak. I bet if you took
any DeLorean (even one with mid-50's tires) across the
desert like that it'd have all types of damage underneath.
On the issue of Marty and Doc breaking back into the mine
in 1895 to get gas out of the DeLorean, I thought of that
too. A few reasons they might not have:
1. Perhaps doc used all the gas when he was trying to
fix the time circuits in 1895.
2. Perhaps they were afraid of causing a time-space anomoly.
After all, the same Marty had to get in the mine later. Who
knows what would happen if things were arranged differently
now (then, later, whenever).
3. The gas in the DeLorean would have been 8 months old anyway.
I've had gas become unusable in less time than that.
4. Doc Brown, being a subscribing member of DOA, already knew
about the problems with the fuel pump seals and had drained the
gas before putting it in the mine so Marty would not have to
replace the fuel system in 1955 (pretty hard to do).
See? It COULD make sense. Personally, I lean towards number 4.
Maybe he ordered all of the back-issues of DeLorean World and
read up on it while he was in 2015. Maybe he called John
Truscott? Who knows. ;)

Mike,
The doors on the DeLorean, unlike the Bricklin, do NOT use
the battery to open. They are mechanical with your arm being
the primary component. :) The Bricklin uses an air pump
to open the doors but they can still be lifted by hand.
As a matter of fact, the Bricklin uses a pump which runs off
of engine vacuum so it doesn't rely on the batter either.
Anyway, I've looked at a few DeLoreans that didn't even have
batteries in them.
As far as tinkering, I'd avoid a car that's been sitting for
a while with gas in it. That would usually require a complete
overhaul of the fuel system--a little more than tinkering
as far as I'm concerned. I'd watch for a car that needs new
gas struts (doors and bonnette) as that would detract from the
car's salability even though they are extremely easy to fix.

Oooops. I just went back to read some old messages and
noticed that Smokey Yunick's car was rated at 350+ HP,
not the 500 that I mentioned in the last mailing.
It would still be interesting to hear about the status
of this car and what Smokey did to it.
On the same note, I noticed an ad for supercharging
DeLoreans in the last DeLorean World. Any comments?
I know supercharging is becomming very popular on
production vehicles (Bonneville SSEI and T-Bird SC) so
they are probably much more reliable than they were when
my father dealt with them ('60s Avantis). Has anyone
here dealt with that shop at all? I can't remember the
name off hand.

I am going through the same hassle right now. I don't know if this is the
best way, But I know it works:
You need 2 people, (I couldn't do it alone). Use 2 1/2 inch long socket as
a spacer to hold the lower door panel away from the door(place it on one of
the fir tree clips to hold it in place). As the other person keeps pressure
on the door handle, you can use your extension screwdriver to place the
screws. Repeat on the opposite side. The big thing that helps is having 2
people.
Good luck!

Subject: Battery.
The door locks work on a continuous negative charge which is
transmitted to both lock solenoids. The door locks can be operated
manually, however.
The door locks work mechanically when there is no power. Both
doors must be unlocked seperately, however.
The battery is located behind the passenger seat, and jump
terminals are located in the engine compartment.
In regards to a $3000 insurance premium...I'm sure if you are a
16year old, male, unmarried smoker with bad grades and horrible driving
record, you may actually come close to $3000.
Additionally, some people claim their insurance company only allows
them to drive 3000 miles a year. (Classified as an RV, perhaps?)
To these people I can only say...FIND ANOTHER INSURANCE COMPANY!
I carry full coverage on my DeLorean. I pay a premium less then
half that with unlimited mile allowance. I pay my premium through monthly
installments for convenience to me, and I find it barely noticeable.
With as much as I love my DeLorean, I can't imagine only being
allotted a few miles a year.

I know the hell you are going through! My door went for weeks without a
handle until my father figured it out. The handle is attached to a
bracket attached to the door. Remove the bracket and attach the handle
to the bracket. Then reinstall the bracket (along with the handle
attached) back on the door.

I have a fealing my local Toys R Us employees aren't too sure of
themselves. At any rate, after about half an hour of running around the
store looking for the Fast Lane Double / Super Value pack...they came to
the conclusion they would check their books, at which time they told me it
was one of their "X" products and discontinued at all stores...
Is this true??? Can anyone verify this? Do I have to track down
some poor unsuspecting kid and steal it away from him when he's not
looking??? Is there anyone here who happened to stockpile beforehand
willing to part with one?

I just noticed an old ad for a car in which the
seller offers to include "a bottle of DeLorean's
wine" along with the car. What's the story on
that? I hadn't heard of that before.
