Wolfie:
It's a nice letter, but it's bound to be met by total indifference from the
folks at Keyport Auto. Since they've managed to bollix up your D pretty
nicely in the two weeks they've had it, what makes you think they can
get it properly repaired in less than *one* week? It seems that, when
given an enlightened hint, these jokers will find a way to break
something more costly than just the wiper switch. [I've known
Oldsmobile dealers to act similarly.] A better idea - contact a towing
company with flatbed rigs to remove your D from Keyport's lot and move
it to a more competent garage. Then, arrange to take the folks at
Keyport to small-claims court to cover the cost of repairs - bring a lawyer
along when your pick up the car, if you like.
Garry:
Capital idea about the ground wire [what y'all call the "earth" wire]!
Hadn't thought about that as a possible cause. Wolfie, have your *new*
mechanic check this out as well.
Chase:
Good idea about the relay - I was personally unaware of the service
bulletin you mentioned. However, from what Wolfie described, he wasn't
even getting the "clicking" sound from the starter solenoid.
Mr. THX:
1) Door locks: already covered by several other members.
2) Insurance: I've no idea where you're from [I'm assuming NJ], but
$3000 is a trifle high for DeLorean insurance - unless you're planning
to use it as an urban commuter into NY, which would be foolhardy.
[Never expose a prized automobile to NYC cabdrivers driving someone
else's Caprices.] One possibility for lowering the rate is to register the
Saturn with your insurer as your "primary" car, with the D as a
"secondary", limited-use car. Also emphasize the fact that you're
married and [I also assume] over 25 - insurers prefer a stable risk, and
marriage does afford some stability [even these days].
If you're planning to have kids, defer the building of the home theater
[little kids would just demolish it anyhow] and make sure you have a
good garage to keep the D in instead. Use some of the leftover funds to
purchase another Saturn for the wife & kids [one car and a DeLorean
just won't cut it for a family with young kids] - perhaps a SW1 wagon.
Also, search out a quality, reliable mechanic to repair the D if anything
major goes wrong - see Wolfie about what problems a poor garage can
impart on your D.
James "Mikasa" Espey:
1) Forward Mr. THX a copy of the Common
Failures List for the DeLorean.
2) How's the CD-ROM coming along? Any ideas on price as of yet?
3) Perhaps the latest maladies scared members into a "wait-and-see"
approach until the system was fixed. I'd hate to see this list decline [as
a Blake's 7 list I once belonged to did], but even I will be forced to leave
the list in about two months - I'll be switching hospital affiliations and
will thus lose my E-mail account.

Please continue as a moderated site. If I had to read one more posting
about toy DeLoreans I was going to be ill ... almost stopped dropping in
because of it. Children should be ... Regards, Marv Sterling vin 16000
