I wish to make a comment.. I do not believe that its is necessary to use this
forum to criticize anyones taste in cars, customization, modifications, etc.
This is a place for DeLorean Owners to exchange support ideas.. Please refrain
from using this forum to vent your personal dis-likes. It is not wanted, and
we, (owners) do not care to discuss, or read about it. Thanks.

I'm sorry about confusing several of you with what I thought were
clearly sarcastic remarks regarding the misconceptions people have
regarding the DMC-12.
My comments were on the misconceptions of the people viewing the cars.
People have all kinds of strange misconceptions regarding DeLoreans,
and thinking they are electric is one of those. Thinking that since
the cars were built in Ireland that everyone in Ireland must therefore
drive one is another.
I will try to be careful in providing proper context for my comments
in the future, maybe through the use of proper emoticons ;-)

had the time as of late to read many of the Digests so I was
surprised when I saw the Bricklin name here. The SV-1 was perhaps one of the
worst cars ever to hit the streets running. The quality- much of it directly
related to the Canadian workforce and its almost zero training- was so
horrible that a very high percentage of SV-1s couldn't be sold by dealers
when they were delivered. Missing parts were a large problem with the first
year's production.
Perhaps the worst problem was the terrible fit and finish with particular
emphasis on the seals of the gull-wing doors and windows. Water leaking in
was such a problem that dealers joked that before selling one it was best to
drill holes in the floor wells to allow the water to drain out. A very few
top notch concours exmples do exist today- and I think at their best they can
outshine a DeLorean- but most resemble cheap kit cars. The AMC and later
Ford engine V-8 wasn't much of performance boost as they were for the vast
majority mated to a sloppy 3-speed automatic.
People can say that the DeLorean suffered from being overly developed and
made bland by its creators but I'll take such a car that provide safety,
reliability, and style over a ill-concived, poorly developed, and badly
manufactured sub-par investment sportscar. Malcom didn't go much farther
with his pursuits of quality- as demonstrated by his importation of the Yugo.

I'd be interested in starting a DOA in NYC.I love Deloreans and would do
anything to be around them.

Subject: oil pan replacement, battery charger
A few weekends ago the weather was finally warm enough to tackle the oil
pan replacement on my DeLorean. The oil plug threads were damaged by a
wanna-be machanic (Me) late last fall. The job wasn't as bad as I thought
it was gonna be. The motor mounts had to be loosened and the motor jacked
up to gain access to some of the bolts, but other than that it was pretty
straight forward. After installing the new pan I am proud to report that
there are no leaks and the car has hit the road once again.
In regards to a previous posting about battery chargers. I bought one
from an Interstate Battery distribution facility near my house. Its the
slow type that is about 1 amp. I've had very good results with this by
permanantly wiring the connector (that was included) to my battery and
plugging it in whenever I park the car in the garage. I've seen the same
type offered for sale at many places including J. C. Whitney for around
$40-$50. I highly recommend!
Good Luck,
Dennis

Subject: Power Steering
I've had my DMC since around 1985 and have kept it in a garage
until a few weeks ago. Does anyone know how fast the car does 0-60 in? My
DeLorean also doesn't have power steering or brakes. Is it possible to
upgrade my car to power steering and brakes and will i need special parts to
do so?
My DMC's battery goes dead every time I leave it parked for over 24
hours. Temporarily I put a "battery buddy" on it that cuts off the battery
if the charge drops to low. Does anyone know what the problem may be?
Thanks,
Dave

after Malcolm recovered from his own car I think he also
brought to the USA the Yugo.
I also think he may have had something to do with introducing the Subaru to
us also (I think prior to the SV1).
Would I own a Bricklin? Probably if the $$$ were right. Would I trade my
DMC-12 for a Bricklin? No thanks. However when I was in Scottsdale AZ
around 1976 I saw a black and white Bricklin police car (light bar and
everything). Actually it was blue and white. Bricklin lived in Scottsdale
at the time and gave the car to the police department there. I wouldn't mind
locating that particular car for novelty reasons.
BTW....I haven't recently taken the opportunity to thank James Espey for all
of his work on maintaining the DMC Mail List. I do enjoy receiving this list.
