Subject: Bricklin
The Bricklin had some interesting ideas but suffered from poor execution. The
body was color molded plastic (like the Fiero). It did have gullwing doors, but
they were actuated with compressed air driven by a pump. You pressed a button
and the door opened or closed. This was a slow process (9 seconds or so to open
the door - which is *forever* compared to any other car) and problematic if
your pump or battery ever died. There was also a problem with opening one door
and closing the other at the same time. The pump would burn out! Panel fit was
poor, interior finish was particularly bad, and the whole thing had a very kit
car feel. The drivetrain on the other hand was very reliable, particularly
the Ford version.

This is not the first time the DML has discussed the Bricklin, but Mike Griese's
post was the first to describe the Bricklin doors in detail.
We've all heard the horror stories about the Bricklin's pneumatic doors. I would
never trade my cryotwist DeLorean doors for Bricklin doors. What was Bricklin
thinking?
Has everyone seen the Mercedes 300SL gullwing coupe? Those doors have very high
sills, making it difficult to enter the car. Exiting is even worse, you are so
far down into the body that the Mercedes gullwing might as well be and Indy
race car!
Besides, the Mercedes window situation is much worse that the DeLorean. The
300SL had no openable windows, and no air conditioning!
I submit that the only car in the world to truely solve the gullwing door
problem is the DeLorean.

In the Documentary film "Start UP" 1981 WGBH TV Boston, John DeLorean had a film
company come in to the operations in the US, Belfast, and Lotus cars to film the
start up of DMC. During the "Lotus Change" period JZD talks to Collin Spooner
one of the engineers that designed and engineered the prototype - to - production
car. One of the changes were the power windows. JZD makes this statement on
film. The DeLoreans power window also looks like the Pontiac FireBird show car
that Bill Mitchell built with the V-12 Ferrari engine. I think that JZD still
had some good friends when he left GM, and some of those friends gave little
suggestions to the development of DMC, and the car.

Hello All! I am starting the DeLorean buying process. I am interested in finding
locations that will sell top quality DeLoreans. I am located in North carolina,
but will travel anywhere (almost) for the quality. So far, I am
looking at DMC in Texas and have heard that PJ Grady will also sell refurbished
DMC's Anybody else have any other suggestions....or other info on DMC or Grady?
Thanks in advance!

I saw a car a while ago that had delorean-style mini windows. Unfortunately,
I did not have a chance to check out what kind of car it was. It was a small
2-door coupe, kind of ugly and very boxy. Anyone know of any production cars
that used this type of window?

There will definitely be mint DeLoreans in 10 years - there will be more
"restored" DeLoreans in mint condition than there will be "original,
unrestored" mint DeLoreans, but thats true for any car, IMO.
A DeLorean like Tony Ieradi's (advertised in DW and HMN recently for $31,500)
with less than 500 miles on it will be available...for a price. I'll even go
out on a limb and say for the record that a DeLorean in that condition in 2007
will have an asking price in excess of $60,000. Will it sell for that? Maybe.
Just got the current DW magazine and the "Presidents Message" talks about this
very subject. Anyone have any thoughts on it?
I reckon the DeLorean market will be much the same in ten years as it is now,
prices will have risen accordingly, but the DeLorean will still be "unpopular"
as far as collectible autos go.

PS - Those of you that get DW, check out my poster ad on the last page at the
top - is everyones VERY dark like mine is? Working in the pritning industry, I
think this is pretty poor printing.

I was in the library looking up some D articles and I came across a small
picture of a gull wing Porche 911 that was modified by a customizing shop.
It touted "gull wing doors with, John Z. DeLorean eat your heart out, power
windows that went up and down at a touch of a button." Other that that it
used a electro-hydraulic opening system. I guess some people never learn.

Having owned a Bricklin for a few years I learned a few things about them. They
were built from '74 thru 76. Early cars had 390 cid American Motors V-8's and
from '75 on they used 351 cid Ford V-8's. There were aprox 2800 built and
Consolidated ( DeLorean's liquidator ) also liquidated Bricklin. Buddy Byers
Chrysler dealership in Columbus, Ohio played a role similar to Kapac's in that
they ended up with much of the spare parts and actually finished the last few
cars. The club representing the Bricklin is Bricklin International. I don't
have a current address or phone # but they run ads in
Hemmings. They have a national convention every year and move it around the
country in the same way the DOA does.

The Subaru SVX has somewhat similar windows. It's a sedan, with mini-windows in
the front AND the back.
