Subject: Bricklin

The Bricklin had some interesting ideas but suffered from poor execution. The
body was color molded plastic (like the Fiero). It did have gullwing doors, but
they were actuated with compressed air driven by a pump. You pressed a button
and the door opened or closed. This was a slow process (9 seconds or so to open
the door - which is *forever* compared to any other car) and problematic if
your pump or battery ever died. There was also a problem with opening one door
and closing the other at the same time. The pump would burn out! Panel fit was
poor, interior finish was particularly bad, and the whole thing had a very kit
car feel. The drivetrain on the other hand was very reliable, particularly
 the Ford version.

This is not the first time the DML has discussed the Bricklin, but Mike Griese's
post was the first to describe the Bricklin doors in detail.

We've all heard the horror stories about the Bricklin's pneumatic doors. I would
never trade my cryotwist DeLorean doors for Bricklin doors. What was Bricklin
thinking?

Has everyone seen the Mercedes 300SL gullwing coupe? Those doors have very high
sills, making it difficult to enter the car. Exiting is even worse, you are so
far down into the body that the Mercedes gullwing might as well be and Indy
race car!

Besides, the Mercedes window situation is much worse that the DeLorean. The
300SL had no openable windows, and no air conditioning!

I submit that the only car in the world to truely solve the gullwing door
problem is the DeLorean.

In the Documentary film "Start UP" 1981 WGBH TV Boston, John DeLorean had a film
company come in to the operations in the US, Belfast, and Lotus cars to film the
start up of DMC. During the "Lotus Change" period JZD talks to Collin Spooner
one of the engineers that designed and engineered the prototype - to - production
car. One of the changes were the power windows. JZD makes this statement on
film. The DeLoreans power window also looks like the Pontiac FireBird show car
that Bill Mitchell built with the V-12 Ferrari engine. I think that JZD still
had some good friends when he left GM, and some of those friends gave little
suggestions to the development of DMC, and the car.

Hello All! I am starting the DeLorean buying process. I am interested in finding
locations that will sell top quality DeLoreans. I am located in North carolina,
but will travel anywhere (almost) for the quality. So far, I am
looking at DMC in Texas and have heard that PJ Grady will also sell refurbished
DMC's Anybody else have any other suggestions....or other info on DMC or Grady?

Thanks in advance!

I saw a car a while ago that had delorean-style mini windows. Unfortunately,
I did not have a chance to check out what kind of car it was. It was a small
2-door coupe, kind of ugly and very boxy. Anyone know of any production cars
that used this type of window?

There will definitely be mint DeLoreans in 10 years - there will be more
"restored" DeLoreans in mint condition than there will be "original,
unrestored" mint DeLoreans, but thats true for any car, IMO.

A DeLorean like Tony Ieradi's (advertised in DW and HMN recently for $31,500)
with less than 500 miles on it will be available...for a price. I'll even go
out on a limb and say for the record that a DeLorean in that condition in 2007
will have an asking price in excess of $60,000. Will it sell for that? Maybe.

Just got the current DW magazine and the "Presidents Message" talks about this
very subject. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

I reckon the DeLorean market will be much the same in ten years as it is now,
prices will have risen accordingly, but the DeLorean will still be "unpopular"
as far as collectible autos go.

Jaes

PS - Those of you that get DW, check out my poster ad on the last page at the
top - is everyones VERY dark like mine is? Working in the pritning industry, I
think this is pretty poor printing.

It touted "gull wing doors with, John Z. DeLorean eat your heart out, power
windows that went up and down at a touch of a button." Other that that it
used a electro-hydraulic opening system. I guess some people never learn.

Having owned a Bricklin for a few years I learned a few things about them. They
were built from '74 thru 76. Early cars had 390 cid American Motors V-8's and
from '75 on they used 351 cid Ford V-8's. There were aprox 2800 built and
Consolidated ( DeLorean's liquidator ) also liquidated Bricklin. Buddy Byers
Chrysler dealership in Columbus, Ohio played a role similar to Kapac's in that
they ended up with much of the spare parts and actually finished the last few
cars. The club representing the Bricklin is Bricklin International. I don't
have a current address or phone # but they run ads in
Hemmings. They have a national convention every year and move it around the
country in the same way the DOA does.

Sorry, but I didn't get my 1200 miles in the last four years entered into the
survey. With those of us who didn't respond and the other 5900+ owners who are
not on the mailing list, the average milage of tail-enders might change a lot.

The one time that I was tailended, I was down to 10 or 15 MPH at arailroad
crossing on a four lane road with no traffic, only one car behind me. The guy
behind me didn't see my pickup, the brake lights or the flashing RR crossing
lights. The impact carried us both accross the tracks, fortunately the train
was still a hundred yards away. Neither of us were hurt and the only damage to
my pickup was a bent back bumper. His front end didn't fare so well. He said
that he just wasn't "paying attention".

I seriously doubt if a string of LEDs on every louvre or five corvette brake
lights would prevent a tailgater, or someone distracted, from hitting you. You
just can't protect yourself from the blind and the stupid.

the upper door panels you just pull up on to take off. You have to watch for
the clip on the back that you can break. Once you get that one off you will
see how to unbolt the bottom half. there is one under the door handle on the
inside and one under the bummy switch that are hard to get to. There are four
after that that you should be able to see.

Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 02:27:05 -0500 (EST) Subject: Delorean Models

Here's an update on the Delorean model body kits for the BTTF models that Rob
Hook was working on. I was able to track down the guy that has the
molds to make these kits. His name is Art Anderson and he owns All American
Models in Indiana. He specializes in custom resin bodys for plastic model kits.
Art explained that he had discussed with Rob the need to make a run of
kits (25 to 30 sets) to make it cost effective (at $35 to $40 a set). He also
said the master for the rear window louvers was destroyed a few years back and
that he would have to make another. He said he told Rob that when he had
confirmed orders (like checks or credit card numbers in hand) for the 25 sets
that he would proceed with the new master and the kits. He explained that
unfortunately the economics of making these kits required the up front money.
Art says he has shelves full of custom kits that people ordered but never paid
for. He now operates on a "paid befor made" basis.
I think this is why Rob said he was going to buy all the kits and then
resell them to us on the order list at no markup. I guess Rob was unable to
finance the project though, because Art says he hasn't heard a word back from
him.
Art says he would still be happy to make these kits for us if we can work out
the details. Does anyone have any ideas (or deep pockets) ? At one
point in time Rob had a list of people who wanted to order kits. Does anyone
else (James?) have this list or can we recreate it ? Do we have any new list
members who are interesred ? Reply to the mailing list or to me directly and
I'll see if we can get this thing going again. Thanks, Marty

Subject: Should I buy it?

Hi everyone,
I have not chimed in here much but now I would like some advice. I have been
searching for a nice DeLorean for over a year now but until recently have not
found exactly what I wanted.
Would you believe after all this hunting and checking I found two in my back
yard! The first one, the owner will not return my calls. I have been by his
house many times but afraid he will turn his Pit Bulls loose if I enter the
place. I think he may be a Howard Hughes type. He is walking distance from my
house.
The second I discovered a couple weeks later purely by accident. It is an
81 auto, gray upholstery and standard stainless body. The VIN is #6656. It
was purchased new right in town here at the Chevrolet Dealership by a local
dentist who owned it 2 years then traded it in on a new brand X car. He put
12K miles on it. The second owner was a young man who purchased it for
12K. He has only put another 2500 miles on it. He said he has not driven
it much and in fact had an old license and kept sticking the license on it
from another car to drive it four or five times a year he said!! Wow. The
total mileage is 14,440. It is all original. Nothing has been done to it.
No alterations, changes or mods. Therein lies the "rub", sort of....everything
in the way of rubber components could be in bad shape..like tires should be
replaced, probably hoses throughout, brake parts....gaskets here and there. I
could only find a couple things wrong with it. The drivers side leather
upholstery was kind of "abraided" I guess
you would call it. I think due to maybe inferior leather at that spot...
certainly not from wear. Also he had taken the door struts off to replace
them but put them back on for my benefit. They were too weak to hold the door
open. I have since run into several people that knew both owners and one even
lived next door to the doctor....said it was kept immaculate at all times.....
the second owners story was confirmed to me by his neighbor whom I talked to
later. Both were always garage stored.
The guy wants $19,500 for it and I offered him $17,500. Neither of us will
budge so far...the owner apparently does not need the money. He is aware that
I will have to pay for new tires, hoses, and other parts and probably that
would come to a minimum of another 2K. In my state (Washington) it will cost
me prox another 2K for state sales tax and license! So you can see the cost
is moving up rapidly. Totaling out to prox 23.5K. OF course the tax/license
is no fault of the cars!! The owner
has never put it up for sale. I just happened to know a friend of his who knew
about the car and gave me his phone number.
A little aside to the story....the guy was formerly into drug peddling and
spent some time up at the State Penitentiary which is in this town. Isn't that
ironic! It has been suggested that might be the reason it has low mileage on
it!! Ho Ho. He just was not available to drive it!
Incidentally he had taken the battery out and brought one from his other home.
He installed it and I turned the key and it started instantly and idled smooth
as silk....seemed to run fine too, but who knows if any sediment in the gas
tank by that time etc. All those things kind of scare me!!
So what do you guys out there think?
