Having a common faults list isn't a lot of help without a source to gets
parts to repair those faults. So, here is a list of DeLorean outfits,
addresses, contact people and phone numbers that I am aware of to date.
I
do not claim this list to be complete or totally accurate. Those with
additions and/or corrections to this list, please let me know and I will
revise and repost it.

Subject: binnacle replacement

it was bound to happen, just when I got my "D" in perfect condition the
binncle cracked. Before I order a replacement I would like to get an
idea of
hard it will be to replace. I have only basic mechanical ability and do
not
want to begin ripping my entire dash apart if it is next to impossible to
put
it back together again. However if it isn't too bad of a job I will
order a
new binnacle. Anybody out there with some good advice?

Subject: Problems already!

Not even a Delorean owner yet and I've already experienced two of
Delorean's notorious faults, but just how serious are they? Today I went
to look at a Delorean that I am very interested in purchasing. I was very
impressed with the condition of the car, however some problems arose while
driving it. First, even though the clutch had plenty of clutch fluid,
sometimes it was hard to get it into gear, especially reverse. The
problem
was lessened, though, once the clutch was pumped up and down several
times.
Then it would slip into gear. Does anybody know the reasons for this?
How serious is this problem? Do you think it may need a new clutch?
Another problem occurred when we pulled up to a stoplight. It was 90+
degrees today in Los Angeles and when we pulled up to a stoplight for
about
three minutes, the coolant in the front radiator began to seriously
overflow on to the street. When I looked down at the thermostat, it was
maxed out. Is this the notorious plastic coolant overflow bottle problem?
The owner doesn't think he has the stainless steel bottle installed, so
that was my first reaction. However it could be something else. Does
anybody know? Is this a serious (expensive) problem? Is there anyway to
drive a Delorean around in 90 degree heat without it overheating? Any
thoughts to these two problems would be greatly appreciated as I am very
interested in purchasing this car soon.
One more thing that I thought my be of interest. The owner told
me
that once the owner of budget rent a car (consolidated industries)
purchased the remaining inventory of Deloreans, the cars produced by KAPAC
sold for considerably less than previous Deloreans (around $8,000). I
thought I remembered reading somewhere that once Delorean entered
receivership, collectors scrambled to purchase the remaining '83's
boosting
the price to around $38,000. Which story is right? A brand new Delorean
for $8,000? I thought this guy might have his facts mixed up but he
insisted on it, saying he vividly remembered being upsent at John Delorean
because he just paid $27,000 two years earlier.

Thanks,

Subject: Problems Explained

Matt:

You've experienced two of the same problems I discovered on my car so
I
should be able to bring you uyp to speed here.

As for the coolant leak, that is being caused by bad radiator not the
coolant bottle. DeLoreans use an aluminum radiator with plastic end
pieces
that are notorious for going bad on Renaults and DeLoreans. If you aren't
picky about concours condition, the best thing to do is replace the
radiator with a brass unit (which actually costs less than replacing it
with an OEM radiator). That is on thelist of things to do to mine as well,
but when I do I also plan to replace the coolant hoses underneath the car
as well as the plastic overflow bottle. Approximate cost of parts to do
all
of this is $500-$600.

The clutch very likely is going bad. At the very least the clutch line is
ballooning under the high heat emitted from the return coolant pipe. The
original teflon line can be replaced and enclosed in a stainless steel
braid that will prevent this problem from reoccurring. If it has been
doing
this for a while, then the clutch may also be wearing out. I had my clutch
replaced with a Centerforce clutch and like it very much. I never drove
my
DeLorean before the clutch weas replaced, so I can not tell you how it
felt
beforehand. The mechanics also replaced the main rear seal in the
transmission and the throttle linkage (crossgate cable) at the same time.
The cost for all this was around $15000 at $55.50 per hour labor rates.

Such is the price you pay for a bargain-priced DeLorean. I have a friend
who was once able to fix a leaking radiator such as these on a Renault
for
several months. He used fiberglass epoxy to do it, however, I don't
recommend trying such a tactic. If the radiator is leaking bad, replace it
with a brand new unit. If you go with an orginal radiator, be sure all the
nearby nuts and bolts are secured, otherwise they could bump into the
radiator and crack it open again.

BTW, whose car are you looking at?

attend the convention and I was wondering if I should hold
off from buying a

cars there fore sale
but about how many?

Subject: Sealing the Windshield

OK, four inches of rain on Sunday here in Missouri and more of it is
falling tonight. My DeLorean is leakin into the interior from both doors
slightly. Although in the case of the passenger side I found standing
water
above the floorboards and noticed that it appears to be leaking from the
window seals and then down the inside of the door and into the interior
from behind the lower panel of the door. I can seal that up easy enough.
Plus I was planning on removing all the old door seals, cleaning and
reinstalling all of them anyway, as well as making more progress on the
DMC
Tech Bulletin regarding water leaks.

However, one area it failed to mention is water leaking in through the
windshield itself. I have "rust" stains down the forward side of the black
vinyl pillars on either side of the windshield. Anyone else have this
problem and been able to remedy it? The parts manual didn't look real
helpful in trying to figure out what all to take apart and seal up around
the windshield.

Subject: ADMIN NOTE/Delorean TV Commercial

For the most part, the web pages have been updated. There are a few
digest that I am missing, but I'm working to get copies of those and
remedy that ASAP (which as most of you know by now, means sometime before
Thanksgiving).

As far as the mailing list goes, I believe the worst is behind us! It
seems to be running pretty well now (knock on stainless) and while the
traffic is good, I still would like to hear from the 240-some lurkers - I
know who you are! ;)

As a special enticement to get you all to come visit the DeLorean Mailing
List home page again, I recently digitized the "short" ten-second version
of the DeLorean television commercial in the QuickTime format. Even at 10
seconds, and 240 x180 frame size, it's still about a 2.3MB file. Bear in
mind that I am most experienced with Macs, not Windows machines, so tech
support from me for the latter will be VERY limited. The full 30-second
commercial will be on the CD that I am trying desperately to have ready
for the expo in Nashville.

Speaking of Nashville, is there ANYONE going to Nashville that would like
to split a hotel room? I don't smell bad, snore or sleepwalk, nor am I
homicidal and they've already got the Unabomber - let me know!
