I had the original alternator burn out on my car about 3 years ago, and
replaced it with a 110 amp GM-Delco unit. I have a high powered stereo and
amp as well as a cell phone hard wired in my DMC, and was tired of seeing
the dashlights go dim at night when the engine ran at idle. The swap was
pretty straight forward; a slight bracket modification was made and the
Delco unit was mounted upside-down from its usual position. The pigtail
from
the regulator was easily spliced to the original wiring harness with no
problems. I have put about 10k miles on this setup since the swap and the
Delco unit has performed flawlessly.
Chase, FYI, a car with 12k on the odometer matched with good looking NCT's
really doesn't give a clue as to the true mileage. After 14 years and
44,000
miles, my original NCT's still look and drive great. Nobody could guess
the
mileage from the tires. Try to find if the car was driven in a cold
climate
in rain or snow; it's possible the angle drive typically froze (and
failed)
in such an environment and was replaced at some point, giving a false
impression of low mileage.

Now James adds his $.02 worth:
Regarding Marv's point #2, cooling fans. Having recently experienced a
cooling fan failure that showed the same symptoms as you describe, I
think that is as good a place as any to start. Check your electrical
relays, the cooling fan relay is unreliable and has shown a tendency to
fail. If your car has not had a jumper installed (as a factory bulletin
recommended), it would be the blue relay in the lower left corner of the
relays. If you need advice on replacing the relay with a fused jumper,
email me at mikasa(AT)goodnet.com.

Does Robert Lamrock have an e-mail address I can write to? I'm trying
to get a copy of the book, and the BBC movie "THE DELOREAN TAPES". I
have a
request in at the BBC, however I just wanted to have a back-up source.
In addition, Do any of you have any thoughts on the DeLorean Motor Co.
refurbished Delorean's? They range from $20,000.00 but are
not"Concourse d'Elegance original condition" They are daily drivers with
all updates etc. If I paid $20,000.00 for one off of the street, I would
have to pay even more for updates etc.

Subject: Book sighting: Elite Cars
For years people have asked me how I got interested in DeLorean's and I
have always answered that I first saw a photo of the DeLorean in a book
that was given to me by my older brother, In the years that have passed,
I lost the book, but recently ran across one at a used bookstore here in
town. It's called "Elite Cars", and it was published in 1979. It features
a number of "exotic" cars and devotes a few pages to each. The DeLorean
shown is one of the early prototypes. The book has its facts right (at
the time of publication) but is more of an "interesting" item than
anythign else now. The bookstore had one other copy, and if anyone is
interested in it, I will buy it and send to you for cost plus shipping.

Subject: Fair Price?
Ok, I know I asked about a fair price for an '83 but I have new info on
the car, and I am curious if the price is fair(or what a fair price would
be, since I havn't ever really looked at another DeLorean that was for
sale) ok here's the scoop:
VIN# 016513 11,914 miles (I am pretty sure it is correct because it
has gone up since that last time I looked at it)
It still has the plastic coolant tank
The drivers side mirror looks like it was repaired, there is some sticky
black glue material between the black arm from the car and the box around
the mirror(what are the correct terms for those peices?)
Drivers side door strut is basically useless and the passenger side looks
as if it is kinda weak (anyone know the price for new ones?)
The body seems to be in excellent shape, I couldn't see any dents or even
scratches... I believe it still has the original tires but the back ones
are kinda worn...
The car started up on first try(and I know they don't start it to often,
so I think that is a good sign) and when I test drove it a few months
back nothing went wrong...oh, yeah it's an Automatic..
they are asking $17,500 (they claim theye want to get rid of it, or
something)
Is that a bit high? any comments would be most appreciated, I really
don't know much about this car(except for what I have read on this
mailing list) but I'm learning.
Thanks much,
Dan Berglund

Dan, I own vin # 16000, rarely drive it but still have about 30K on it and
had to change tires, front and back, at about 25K. If the rear tires are
really bad, and those are the ones least subject to wear, I would
seriously
question the mileage ... the fact that the speedo is now operating doesn't
mean that it hasn't been disconnected for awhile. I wouldn't use the fact
that it started on the first try to be significant since mine starts up,
hot
or cold, on the first try virtually every time. Now! Assuming all else
with
the car is good the $17,500 is not bad for an '83, they are the rarest of
the breed, if I were to sell I would start at about 25K and settle for
22.5
and not a cent less. A replacement mirror assembly would cost you $150
from
P.J. Grady in West Sayville, NY. Are any of the service records available?
You could establish the mileage that way, also what about inspection
records. Oh, bye the way, heavy duty struts should run you about $100 for
a
pair.
Good luck,
Marv Sterling
