Most of the list "old-timers" probably know this, but for the benefit of
the many new subscribers, the DMC-News digest is distributed Monday,
Wednesday and Friday - unless one of those days is a holiday - like
Memorial Day.
So, that's why there was no digest Monday. We now return you to your
regularly scheduled program.

Subject: Alpine CD Receiver in DeLorean
Jeff:
I've installed an Alpine FM/AM Compact Disc Receiver (Model# CDM-7823) in
my early 1981 DeLorean without any real difficulty. The chasis size of the
unit is width: 170 mm (7"), height: 50mm (2"), and depth 152mm (6"). I did
have to have the opening on the console plate cut to match the new radio,
but that will be true of any CD stereo installed.
The one-year old system works great! It has never skipped or had problems
overheating like it did previously in the Porsche 924 I used to own. And
it
is able to pick up a lot more area radio stations than any other car
stereo
I've ever owned - even with my DeLorean having the original windshield
antenna striping (which was replaced later on in production due to poor
reception).
I hope this helps you in your search for the right system. Let me know if
you want any further details on my unit or help on figuring out how to
install it.

Subject: Delorean Video
I had the pleasure of speaking to John DeLorean On May 22 1996. I'm
researching the Tv movie "DeLorean Tapes". I telephoned and asked him if
had
ever heard of it. He said no, however he has a new interview with John
Kelly
of Ulster Television. It will be marketed through the internet for about
$25.00. Stay Tuned.
The Movie"Delorean Tapes" was produced by Danny Boyle when he worked
for the BBC. He now works for International Creative Management (ICM) in
London England. In 1995 they produced "Shallow Grave". I sent his agent
Sue
Rogers a fax for my (our) request of a copy. His P.A (production
assistant)
"Joe" said that it was not released in the US, but she will ask Mr. Boyle
for a copy. Thanks to the Gentleman for the address of Shallow Grave.
Can anyone help us? A reward is available. (Film students don't get the
respect they deserve)
On my never ending quest to find the right car, I met Rob Grady
of P.J. Grady. He was super nice, and took my father and myself on a
tour of his facilities, and let us drive three possible cars. I didn't
buy a car from him, but he came so see us here in Maryland at the Bowie
British Car Day. This isn't some "Cheesy car show" this is a well
organized event. The area is near the horse racing track that John
Delorean once owned when he worked for GM. Rob came in his Green car, and
I have a picture of it. Very Nice. I've sent invitations to other owners
in PA, NJ, NY, DE, MD, VA, WVA. for this years event.
I had the pleasure of speaking with both Steve Wynn, and Ed
Bernstein when they were partners at Delorean One. They are business men,
and do a wonderful job keeping cars on the road. I sorry if they
were rude to anyone here, I'm sure they didn't mean it. They are real
fanatics, and even produced a short video describing a pick up service
that will transport the owners car to a repair centre. Very impressive
facilities.
With kind regards
Michael R. Pack
p.s. John Delorean requested a copy of my video, and I sent him the
invitation to DOA Nashville expo too.

My question of the week is this: emerging from the front part of the
left (driver's side) rear pontoon is a small black plastic tube. About
1/16" OD. Where does it come from & where does it go???
Any help will be appreciated.

At least on my car (#10570, an '82), the SMALL black tube is a drain tube
off of the power antenna. There should also be a LARGE black tube (1/2"
OD or thereabouts) that comes off the (what's it called) canister that's
also inside the pontoon.

Subject: D1...
Here are my comments regarding Delorean One in Chatsworth, California..
I am a new owner (about a week) of a 1981 Delorean here in Scottsdale,
Arizona.
I picked the car up very cheap (~$9,500) and intend to do many of the
minor
fixups myself. I would like to learn more about the car in the
process. Being an co-owner of a successful business enterprise, I
understand
the need for effective time management. I faxed my order for parts to D1
and
promptly received a return phone call by Ed detailing what would and would
not be
shipped and on what dates. After reading these news threads, I expected
him
to be brisk and short on the phone. My experience was the complete
opposite.
He went well out of his way to talk to me about my car, his car, his
daughter's
car, his facilities, the culture of the Delorean in general, etc... When
requesting what would be necessary to change a part, he freely gave all
the information required to do the job myself. He doesn't oversell his
products and services and has a geniune enthusiasm for the DMC-12. I am
in the
sales and marketing aspect of my business and I can detect a phony in a
second. This gentleman is the real thing. His love for the car and his
promotion
of the Delorean marque are in the best interest of all owners. He seems to
have a first class operation and is a pleasant person overall.
I am sure that I will continue to do business with D1. He runs his
business
on the same principals I run mine.
Enjoy..

Richard:
I believe what you are referring to is a vertical drain hose for the
carbon
canister which is part of the emission control system. If you are
referring
to a horizontal pipe however, you probably see the expansion tube that
runs
from the emission system back to the fuel tank. I haven't looked at my car
to see it myself, but took this info from the DMC parts book.

Subject: A DeLorean-Filled Memorial Day Weekend
I took advantage of the Memorial Day weekend to particpate in a parade
with the DeLorean Owners Association Southern California Chapter (Chapter
12). I drove from Phoenix to LA and after putting a thousand highway
miles on the Yokohama tires, I would recommend to anyone in a dry climate
- - didn't get rained on, so I can't vouch for their wet weather handling.
With 15 DeLoreans participating in the parade, it was quite a show. If
there is a chapter in your area, things like this make it fun. A lot of
the people lining the parade route commented that they had never seen a
DeLorean, much less so many of them all in one place at one time. I
imagine the Chapter 12 page will have some pictures within the next week
or two.
Tuesday I took advantage of my last day in LA to visit DeLorean Motor
Center and DeLorean One. They're practically at opposite ends of LA, so a
visit to Tim at Swedish (RIP) was out of the question. Anyway - DeLorean
Motor Center is in a rather industrial district of Garden Grove, about 4
DeLoreans were parked out front and another 7 or 8 on the side of the
building, some of which looked like they hadn't moved in a while. Don
Steger told me that his company owned 13 DeLoreans, and I got the
impression that some of them are "parts" cars. Don had one mechanic in
the shop at the time that I visited, and he was working on his own
DeLorean at the time. Don showed me around the shop and showed me some
items that his company remanufactures as improvements to the original
equipment. He pointed out what he called a "600HP" DeLorean under a cover
in the corner, but didn't show it to me. A nice clean shop, but it didn't
seem very well organized to me.
My visit to DeLorean One also was on Tuesday, and Ed Bernstein graciously
took an hour out of his morning to give me the grand tour (if you were
one of the 17 - YES, 17! - who called to speak to Ed Tuesday between
10:00am and 11:00, and he didn't take your call, it's my fault). Talk
about Santa's workshop for DeLoreans! DeLorean One is stacked to the
rafters (literally!) with everything from wheels, tires, several doors,
fenders (FIVE left front), several quarters, hoods, glass, louvres,
transmissions, motors, seats, binnacles, 500 (yes, 500) brand new door
struts made by the original manufacturer, you name it. It's all EXTREMELY
well organized, with separate rooms for stainless work, interior work,
shipping and offices - plus a 7 car mechanical bay. In addition to
himself and his wife Millie, I saw three or four other employees doing
everything from test drives (looking for the source of a rattle) to
refurbishing a set of headliners that someone had sent in. One of the
more interesting cars in the shop (out of the 13 - ALL there for service
or restoration) was a car from Wyoming that had literally sat in a ditch
for five years. Complete new interior was in the process of being
installed, much work had already been done on the engine (can you believe
that ANTS were found in side the engine?). In addition to the car from
Wyoming, I saw cars from Maryland, Nevada and California. Ed was also
kind enough to show me the "rolling chassis" and Legend Industries Twin
Turbo motor that DeLorean One owns. All in all, just an incredible place.
I've come to believe that there are two very different kinds of DeLorean
parts/service facilities out there. The two that that I visited are both
established, well-known and reputable. That, IMO, is where the similarity
ends. If your DeLorean is important to you, important enough that you
want it to be "correct" and by that I mean original equipment parts, new
parts made by the original manufacturers or original parts restored to
original condition (i.e. headliners, seats, dashes and door panels),
DeLorean One is the best in the business. If you'll be satisfied with
"make-do" replacements or "close but not quite", the other guys are great
for that.
It was quite eye-opening to actually visit these two shops, and see for
myself what kind of operation each is. I hope to be able to visit
Delorean Motor Company in Texas and PJ Grady in New York someday. Maybe
someone else on the list has and would like to offer their observations?

Just out of curiousity, who is going to the expo in Nashville? Will you
be flying or driving? Will you put your car in the concours?

BTW, look for another DMCNews "meet and greet" during the expo. Details
to follow...

James:
I plan on being at the Expo and taking my early '81 DeLorean there
providing it's temperment is willing. I'm sure you know how British cars
can be upset by the slightest thing and refuse to run or run well. I once
had a MG Midget that wouldn't run smoothly unless it was washed regularly.
Seriously!
>Will you put your car in the concours?
HA Ha HA Ha HA Ha !!!!!! There may not be many original parts left on mine
by the time I get done modifying systems for everyday use.

Subject: Antenna and larger tires
Is it possible to change the front black wire antenna on the early
'81's to the rear automatic antenna that comes through the air intakes?
If
so, how do you cover the hole in the front of the car and how do you
create
room for the power antenna in the rear? If the power one can't be
installed, is there any alternative to the front mounted wire antenna?
Another question: On a previous car I owned, the mechanic told me
that it was possible to put one size larger tires than the recommended on
the car. So I always put on 185's on the recommended 175's and felt a
definate positive change in the handling. Is it possible to do the same
for the Delorean's? Can I put on 205's in front and 245's in back or is
there not enough room in the wheel well (would the tires scrape when
turned
or when cornering)?
Thanks,
Matt Peak
