I have talked to several tire men who have told me that either nylon or
polyester tires are safe as long as the rubber on the sidewall and between the
tread is not cracked.

My tires are original with 12000 miles also and I drive the the car once a week

Do we have any tire (or tyre) experts on the list?

I have owned my DeLorean for three years and often get asked by both kids

and adults if they can either see the interior or sit in the car. I have

owned several classic and unique sports cars and I expect people, especially
kids, to want to look at and even check out the car.

However, I have the opposite reaction you had. If I want to be left alone, I
don't drive my DeLorean. Most classic car owners I know are very

open to showing off their cars. The ultimate complement to me is someone

wanting to take a picture (of course I'm never in the picture). You're driving
a "Back to the Future Car" that kids love and it will always draw

attention. I have never had anyone damage my car. Most kids talk about this
experience for weeks (at least that's what my kids tell me). I have

never had the experience of anyone sitting in my car without asking me.

I remember what it was like seeing classic sports cars when I was a kid.

I always make time for kids who want to see what a DMC is all about.

James,
How about a HUMOR SECTION on your new web page.

A place for jokes about the DMC.

Like,
The DeLorean is the only car ever to come with an Autopilot as standard
equipment, it just follows the white lines.

CalTrans hates the DeLorean. Caltrans has to replace all of the white dots on
the road when a DeLorean travels down it.

I enjoy hearing them, and people enjoy me telling them, I think?

Hi,
I don't like DMC jokes. When you drop several thousand dollars on
something I don't think jokes are what you'd like to hear.

a user name and password? What's the deal?

There are a couple of tools for converting mail archives to HTML pages with
threaded indices. One of my favorites is MHonArc.
http://www.oac.uci.edu/indiv/ehood/mhonarc.html It's very customizable.

This doesn't directly support searches, however. You'd have to find another
program to set up a search engine.

What I was thinking of is a manually compiled and sorted set of specific how-
to's, so that when something breaks down, you can go to the TOC and click on
it, and see how other people fixed it. I guess a search engine would do the
same thing, it would just lack that repair-manual feel. OTOH, it would be
more flexible.

Subject: Sitting in Cars

I have recently participated in two car shows. The first was the "British Car
Show" in Monterey. The attendees were primarily very polite and respected
the
signs. When someone came up who was obviously very excited about the car,
ask
if they could sit in it, I would ask to see the bottoms of there shoes and
make sure that nothing was in there pockets that would damage the seats. I
found that by asking those questions first, they relized that my DMC was
important to me.

At the Pacific Coast Dream Machines, a very large show in Half Moon Bay last
weekend, there were 1500 cars and thousands of people. Again, the same rules
applied. I only turned one group away, "Punk Rockers/Grunge", the reason
being was the heavy black boots, studs in the leather clothes, ect. They were
not happy, but when you have a bunch of Harley owners across the way that
like
your car, who's gonna screw with you.

I personaly enjoy going to the shows and talking to people about my car.

Most are polite and are just curious. In fact I have meet many interesting
people and have heard some good jokes about the DeLorean.

don't think we have any more obligations than owners of other "interesting"
cars, but at the same time, I do go out of my way to leave a positive
impression with people about the car.

>James

I do understand your position. I know I have one heck of a rush every time I
meet a DeLorean owner, but one time I was with some 'friends' from school
going to my house for a project... I saw the DeLorean and obviously pulled
over as quickly as possible.

I approached and quietly waited for a signal from the owner, who was
standing near the car talking to his passenger, once I was shure he was not in
some type of serious situation I made the famous statement: "Gorgeous
DeLorean." He was happy to talk to me but he was obvoiusly ready to go. I
saw this and made the comment that it was nice to see him and I'll let him
go...

Right then my 'buddy' asks "Can we get a ride?" and gets in his face.

Oy. Embarrassment.

I think it takes a special breed to own a DeLorean, I have never met one who
was not curtious and kind. It's to bad that there are people who take
advantage of this...

DeLorean and Volkswagen Bug owners: both seem to have the right attitude
towards life.

I drive my D through East Brunswick on a regular basis (today, as a matter of

It would be fun to get a few local D's together from central Jersey for one

Wow! You live in the area too! I drive down that way all the time in my D,
ant other cars...

Anyway, I have not had any strangers be so bold as to ask to put his brat in my
car, but it is almost guaranteed that the gas station dude will always ask the
same standard questions.. I have considered printing out the FAQ, and
keeping copies in the car for all of the questions I get asked.

"Check the doors for drugs yet" is on the top ten of most asked questions,
along with "Where is the flux capacitor" I wish I had a dime for every.......

The truth is, I have never been rude, and have always just politely answered
their questions. Unless you have owned such a car that attracts attention, you
don't understand that everyone asks the same questions. To them, they think
they are the first person to show a interest.. I bought a
66 Mustang when I was 16, so I got used to the conversations and questions at
every possible opportunity. On one trip in the mustang, I was asked "What
Year" at almost every red light. Why? Who cares what year it is! And
who cares that you used to have one when they were new, am I supposed to
be
impressed? This is not a competition, I am just out enjoying a drive in my
car!

Competition, that is a whole different thread! Why is it that every dirtbag in a
5.0 mustang, or camaro feels the need to race me?! This morning I had a
Escort "Sport Coupe" try and race me. With the twin turbos, I give the
Mustangs a good race, but little do they know that I am keeping up with 2 less
liters and 2 less cylinders! Besides, it is more fun
to leave them in the dust with my SHO. "Hey! You just got beat by a grandpa
car!!"

allrightiey I'm done..

Subject: 81, 82 and 83 Chronology UPDATE

Well, with 83 cars, or nearly 1 percent of the commonly accepted production
total of 8583 cars, I think we're moving along nicely. There are still MANY
list subscribers that have not sent in their info to me. Remember, if you don't
want your name listed, just let me know and I can include your data but not
your name.

Some thoughts that I had while looking over the list..

1. Still no consecutively numbered cars. 2. Many states still not represented.
3. Any more cars with a VIN under 1000?
4. Any cars after Jan 82 and before Aug 82? 5. Do any of the local DMC clubs
track VIN's of members cars?

Full details of the production chronology with an estimated production graph
(by Knut Grimsrud) can be found at: http://www.dmcnews.com/chrono.html

There is some degree of adjustment in the striker pin itself. If your car still
has the rubber cover on the base if the striker pin remove it to reveal the hex
shaped base. As you close the door try to see which direction
the pin must go. Loosen the pin a bit and tap it to where you've determined
it should be. Don't force the door to latch because it is possible to jam the latch
if you've moved the pin too far out of alignment. With a little care and some
trial and error you can find that happy medium. If the hinges
need to be adjusted it becomes more involved because the front hinge
adjustment requires removing the torsion bar. I'll bet just moving the striker
pin will solve your problem.

Your description sounds like you have a bad master cylinder. It is easy to get
to on the car so any mechanic should be able to handle the job without a
problem. Make sure you get the system flushed out with the proper DOT 4
brake fluid to avoid other future problems. Doug

My right side door lines up very poorly to the front fender, but opens and
closes fine. I am assuming that it was always like that but was wondering if
there is anyway I can adjust it to make it line up. Right now it doesn't look
real good because the black side moulding on the door is a inch or so lower
than the moulding on the front fender. Thanx

Subject: New Owner / De- Lurker

Another Lurker de-lurks! After collecting the DMC News list for over a year,
reading all of the back issues, going to the DOA convention in Nashville, and
having a couple of beers with our esteemed moderator in Phoenix, I finally
took the plunge and purchased (October) 1981 #05429 last week. It is
unpainted stainless, grey interior, hood with grooves/no flap, 5-speed.

This will be a "weekend" car. My daily driver is a '94 Acura Integra GS-R.
Since it absolutely never breaks (50k miles and only a brake job), I could use
something interesting to work on. I've been a fan of, and following the
DeLorean since the beginning, and have many of the original Car&Driver,
R&T etc magazines from 1980-83 covering the rollout and ongoing story.
Having a 12-year old son who is also nuts about the car was the final prod to
get one.

I found the DMC in a local ad paper. The car has been kept in a heated
airplane hangar for the past 6 years and is relatively clean, runs well, with a
few of the common cosmetic flaws that you see mentioned on the mailing
list. It's not perfect, and was priced accordingly. The speedometer works and
mileage shows 27000, but since the angle drive is held on to the backplate
with a piece of wire I'm more than a little suspicious. Also there was a receipt
buried in the owners' manual showing the tires being replaced at 20800 miles
in 1986, even though the title showed the prior owner buying it in 1989 with
20000 miles on the odometer.

The car was originally sold in Anaheim California but was brought to Illinois
between 1986-89. I have the window sticker showing an original total price of
$26175 with no options. Interesting to note that "Rear Mounted Power
Antenna" appears to have been manually typed in at the bottom of the
equipment list.

The car is very original with only a couple of glaring exceptions, including a
modified steering wheel (the top was cut off so it looks like an airplane
wheel!). This was alledgedly done by the original dealer. It's interesting to
look at, but kind of annoying to drive this way. I'm very interested in finding
a "normal" steering wheel. If anybody has one available, email me at the
address below.

Also, there's a droopy center headliner, and the door headliners were
replaced with what looks like mouse fur. The radio is the original Craig with
some of the dial numbers still working (depending on how far you push the
tape door). It still has the plastic water bottle. The rest of the interior appears
perfect except for a crack in the instrument binnacle. Everything seems to
work except the air conditioner (big surprise there).

Although it runs very well, the car does show a few of the beginning signs of
non-driving neglect. I've immediately started into the mechanical clean-up
process. Cosmetics will have to wait a while. I plan to post the progress here
as sort of a diary, feel free to toss in advice where you see fit. That said:

First project was to check out the brakes. Looking into the master cylinder and
seeing a bunch of what looks like green rocks and jello in the reservoir, and
signs of rust on the steel disk, I decided to replace the master cylinder and do a
cleanup of the hydralic system. I don't feel brakes are a good place to
compromise. So far I've taken apart one of the calipers, and it looks like they
should clean up OK. The pistons have very minor surface rust and no sign of
pitting. The pads and rotors are in good shape. I expect to have the brakes
finished this weekend, then it's on to the clutch hydraulics and cooling
system.

Future posting won't be so wordy, but I figured I could get away with it for the
first one after a year of reading. Stay tuned.
