Can someone explain how often the A/C cycles, and it is depending on the interior and exterior temperature in any way or only on the pressure in the A/C System? My A/C was low on freon. The Shop check my A/C and put new freon in it (VIN2255 07/81 1250gr. freon R12). Now I have cool air, but the A/C and the both cooling fan cycles on and off every minute. Is this normal!? Those who were here last fall will remember that I took the list off moderation while I went to the Expo in Nashville, and the results were not pretty. Knut "Knasty" Grimsrud has graciously volunteered to maintain the list as "Guest Moderator" in my absence. THERE IS NO CHANGE IN WHERE OR TO WHOM YOU SOULD SEND POSTINGS FOR THE LIST. I have also chosen this time to make some changes to the list and digest. Effective immediately, a digest will be generated every three days or when the content of all the digested(?) messages exceeds 40K, whichever comes first. Subscribers to the "live" version should see the letters "DML" as a prefix for each posted message. Maybe this will help sorting and such for some. Sometime over the weekend I will disable the forms for subscribing and unsubscribing until I get back from Belfast - instructions are there for subbing/unsubbing "the old way". Questions? Chase Clark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 15:57:10 -0400 (EDT) From: GullWinged@aol.com Subject: DML Fall Convention ???? I just recently made up my mind about joining DOA and attending the convention in Colorado late this summer. Actually, it wasn't that hard a decision after looking through the agenda for last year's convention and reviewing the list of 'to do' items on my own '81 DeLorean. In essence I will not be going and it is not meant to be taken as a way of slamming DOA. The organization has been very instrumental in banding together owners and keeping some much-needed technical information in circulation. HOWEVER, I find the convention is more for the upper-class owners to congregrate at expensive hotels, socialize at numerous buffets and sight-see in style. I can find much better uses of $1,200 than going to Colorado. Actually, I am one of the 'newer' breed of DeLorean owners that were fascinated by the car for its own sake, as well as the BTTF movies perhaps, and started to research it. I found it to be very affordable luxury for an 'exotic' car and could not resist buying one. In no way am I rich and wanting to waste lots of money on a club event that is more social than technical related. I would love to see a convention where owners and enthusiasts could get together and socialize, learn more technical info about the car and even participate in a couple of events to promote the DMC. With this in mind, I am posting this to see if there would be any interest in having a cheaper convention this fall in the Midwest. Being from Missouri and having grown up near Lake of the Ozarks, I was thinking that it would not be too difficult for me to arrange a 2-4 day event at the Lake in late September to mid October. The summer heat will be gone, the leaves will be changing to all shades of color and the manic summer tourists will have departed for the most part. I was thinking of setting up a deal with a moderately-priced hotel that would include somewhat-casual breakfast and dinner plans. Naturally, a car show and technicial meetings would be held. I am also interested in setting up a charity golf tourney to benefit the Ronald McDonald House and the Dream Factory (which helps dying children fulfill their dreams). The reason for this would be to help foster a greater respect for us owners and the DeLorean itself. I would have no problems arranging publicity and news coverage since I spent several years as a journalist at numerous publications within a 60 mile radius of the Lake. Cost of the event, to be held Friday through Sunday, is not known yet, but I would want to bring it down below half the cost of the DOA convention. The major expenses would be the hotel, banquests and bringing in Stephen Wynne or Rob Grady as technical experts. I want to keep it cheap enough that more people interested in buying a DeLorean now or in the future will consider attending the event to see the cars and learn more about them. I also want to attract a larger breadth of owners than I believe the DOA event does. Sorry for the length here, but it was necessary to get this all said. Anyone who might be interested in attending this (hopeful) event should contact me via email within the next month. I would need to have at least two full months to organize everything and a sufficient number of commited attendees to turn it into a reality. Thanks! I was impressed by the courteous response from each of the manufactures that I talked to. They were very helpful and had things like flow rates, by pass valve pressures, and fitting sizes at hand. Apparently the lawyers have been around, since each manufacturer, including Purolator, warned me that use of any filter not specifically recommended for the Delorean would be "AT YOUR OWN RISK". Purolator is the only manufacturer that that I found that recommends a filter for the Delorean, the L10018, which is also too large to install easily. A filter recommendation for a Volvo does not count as a recommendation for a Delorean. Oh well, I guess we all have to take a risk once in a while. The filter that appears to match our needs is longer and slimmer than the original, has the same 3/4 inch thread and the same diameter gasket. The bypass valve is set at 8-11 psi, whereas the bypass valve in the recommended filter is 14-16 psi. The bypass valve is built into the filter and opens when there is a differential pressure across the filter element to allow oil flow to the engine if the filter element becomes clogged. If you change your oil every 3000 miles the lower bypass pressure should be of no consequence. The following filters meet the above criteria: AC PF 56 Fram 3600 Lee LF400 Motorcraft FL400A Purolator L20195 Wix 51516 Do not use the following eventhough they will fit: Lee LF 2861 (bypass pressure 27-35) Purolator L20064 (no bypass valve) I hope that this may be of some help. But it is the lowest point in the engine. I'd rather do both. On any car I've had, pulling the block drain(s) after draining the radiator always dumps another gallon or so of coolant. The coolant hoses are connected to the engine relatively high up, so by draining the system only at the radiator you still end up with an engine block full of old coolant. One block drain is located just above the oil pressure sender on the passenger side, but the one on the left is cleverly hidden behind the catalytic converter. Given that all the cars are about the same age, I'd look for a common denominator that may be age related. Warren at DMC had the best idea I've heard yet when I spoke with him. Check the inlet hose on the fuel pump in the tank. Age and/or new gas formulations can cause it to deteriorate and cause loss of suction. I've had cases with mechanical fuel pumps where the layers of a hose seperated internally. The gas under pressure pumped between the layers of rubber causing a restriction in the hose. I'm going to try it this weekend myself. Steve Brodsky #10688 Steve, you may be on the right track with the collapsed fuel pump suction hose. When I was in Monterey, my 1981 just stop running. It turned out that the suction line had collapsed. This hose had been in actual service for approximately 1 year, I purchased it two years ago from DeLorean One, along with a fuel pump ect... The return line hose, which is in the same environment, and which has fuel flowing through it at a much higher velocity was still in perfect condition. I will concede that the fuel we have today will attack some of the more common materials, but it seems to me that if the suction line was reinforced and made from the same material as the return line, there would be no problem. Scott Mueller #2981 OIL PLUG WRENCH Dave Swingle said: >"I've also been unpleasantly surprised about tool requirements. It took me some digging around and a call to Snap-On to get the tool required to drain the oil and anti-freeze." I made my tool, just go to the hardware store and buy a piece of square bar stock slightly larger than the socket head plug. Grind the end to fit, then bend it 90 deg, like an allen wrench. Worked great for me and cost about $0.50 SCOTT MUELLER #2981 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 May 97 22:54:11 -0600 From: David Swingle Subject: DML: Coolant Drain Plugs I changed the coolant today, and contrary to my earlier statement was able to remove both the left and right block drain plugs. The one on the left side is visible only from position near the left tailpipe. Both sides together dumped out over a gallon of coolant AFTER the radiator had been drained. A couple of hints on this - the tool is the same 8mm male square socket you need for the oil drain plug. It must be a socket since you need to use a 10" extension on the left side. This plug also use the same copper o-ring as the oil drain plug, so be prepared (say "82 Volvo" at the parts store - 16mm copper gasket). Get extras. The biggest pain of the job is retrieving the plug on the left side after you drop it behind the catalytic converter-Careful! I also have to agree with whoever it was (Chase?) that posted a while back regarding the capacity - the manuals state 2.9 US gallons, but I was able to put in about four. The manual must have meant Imperial gallons.
